THE COSMOS
ADLER PLANETARIUM AND
ASTRONOMY MUSEUM
Adler was the first public planetarium in the
Western Hemisphere. Today, the planetarium
features many permanent exhibits as well as sky
shows presented in the newly renovated Definiti
Space Theater, which provides virtual reality tours
through space.
NICOLAUS COPERNICUS
MONUMENT
This monument, installed in
1973, commemorates the 500th
birthday of Copernicus, the
Father of Modern Astronomy. It
is a replica of an early nineteenth
century sculpture that once sat
in front of the Polish Academy of
Sciences.

Polish Revolutionary War hero
Kosciuszko played a pivotal
role in the Battle of Saratoga,
a turning point of the war.

Completed in 1929, Shedd became the first inland
aquarium with a permanent salt-water collection.
Today Shedd is Chicago’s premier cultural
attraction, housing more than 32,000 marine
animals from the world’s fresh and salt waters.

Charter One Pavilion, built in 2005, is a state-ofthe art, 7,500-seat venue, hosting concerts and family
matinee events. The view of the Chicago skyline from
the Pavilion is outstanding.

In 1927, women’s groups suggested a public
beach at this location, and park commissioners
agreed. The Chicago Park District replaced the
dilapidated beach house with a new facility in the
late 1990s.
SPIRAL GALAXY
The 14-foot-tall Spiral
Galaxy was installed south of
Adler Planetarium in 2005 in
celebration of the Adler’s 75th
anniversary. Created by John
David Mooney in 1994, the
piece was inspired by research
on Galileo’s drawings and
early images of our closest
galaxies.

Sixty stone pieces, each from a different quarry,
were selected to represent
the diverse peoples of the
Americas. Creators Denise
Milan and Ary Perez also
intended the stones to evoke ancient monuments.
Arranged in the shape of a spiral galaxy, the stones are
oriented to the points of the compass so that they can
be used to follow the progression of the seasons. This
unique feature was installed here in 2000.
This sundial, installed
near the planetarium in
1980, was created by
British sculptor Henry
Moore.

This memorial is dedicated to
the families of the officers of
the Chicago Police Department
who have fallen in the line
of duty. One monument
poignantly reads in part, “It is
not how these officers died
that made them heroes, it is
how they lived.”

GARDEN
Enter this hidden
garden by crawling
through “Cultural
Earth” and attempt
to solve the riddle
of the 25 world
cities shown on the
spiraling pathway
and “Geography Earth.” More play options relate
to the three nearby museums. Landscape architect
Peter Lindsay Schaudt designed this garden.

SOLDIER FIELD/TRIBUTE TO FREEDOM
Designed by Chicago architects Holabird and
Roche in 1919, Soldier Field was dedicated to soldiers
of World War I and completed in 1926. A major 2003
renovation, designed by architects Wood and Zapata,
included a large glassy addition and added 17 acres.
At Soldier Field’s north entrance, visitors are greeted by
a 15-foot tall bas-relief monument designed by artists
Anna Koh Varilla and Jeffrey Hanson
Varilla. The monument depicts men
and women of the Armed Services and
their families relaxing along Chicago’s
lakefront with the Chicago skyline in
the background. The figures represent
Chicago’s broad ethnic and racial
diversity as well as a range of historical
periods.

CHICAGO FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC
MEMORIAL
This park was dedicated
by Mayor Richard M.
Daley on September 11,
2002, to pay tribute to
firefighters and paramedics who have died
in the line of duty as far
back as 1857, when the
city still had a volunteer
fire department. The
sculptor of the boots and
helmet is a firefighter/
paramedic named John Alaniz. The memorial is
sponsored by the Gold Badge Society of families of
fallen firefighters and paramedics.

BALBO MONUMENT
This monument is the most
ancient outdoor artifact
in Chicago. Its breccia
shaft came from a Roman
structure located on the
shores of Ostia, Italy,
from the time of Julius
Caesar. A gift of the Italian
government, the monument
was dedicated on Italian
Day in 1934 at A Century of
Progress to commemorate
the one-year anniversary
of General Balbo’s squadron’s famous 1933
transatlantic flight in amphibious airplanes from
Ortobello to Chicago.

The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.
McCormick Place, the nation’s largest convention
complex, includes many restaurants among its
amenities. The original McCormick Place, built in
1960, was destroyed by fire in 1967 and rebuilt in
1971. Failed efforts to relocate the center outside
the park led to the Chicago and Lakefront Protection
Ordinance of 1973.
This new 6-acre prairie

provides habitat for migratory birds. It includes an
observation platform,

In 1928, the South Park Commissioners built this

SKATE PARK
The park honors African American Harold
E. Washington (1922–1987), who served as Chicago
mayor, Illinois legislator, and U.S. Congressman.
Features include an elaborate soft surface
playground and tennis courts. A large flock of
parakeets, former pets that became wild, are now
year-round residents of the park. A pedestrian tunnel
beneath Lake Shore Drive connects this area to
Promontory Point.

MODEL YACHT BASIN
AND ECSTASTY
Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline
and Lake Michigan from this location. The South
Park Commission and the Chicago Park District
created the peninsula from fill between the 1920s
and the late 1930s. Prairie-style landscape architect
Alfred Caldwell designed the grounds, and architect
Emanuel V. Buchsbaum, the site’s castle-like
pavilion. The building and
site were fully restored in
the early 1990s, including
the stone council rings.
Promontory Point is
available for weddings

stations located at piers at the 31st and 41st Street

trout, rock bass, yellow perch, large- and smallmouth bass, coho and king salmon, bluegills, and
smelt can all be caught from Burnham Harbor.
Please observe the posted fishing guidelines.
