Cleveland Metroparks opens new exhibits installed
in the ArcelorMittal Steel Heritage Center and the
long-awaited connection trail from Harvard Road
to Steelyard Commons Shopping Center. This link
makes the Towpath Trail continuous from Akron to
the Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland.
The Steel Heritage Center was made possible
through the cooperation of many organizations,
including ArcelorMittal, Cleveland Metroparks,
Western Reserve Historical Society and First
Interstate Properties. The structure is an old-time
clock building and it was moved by First Interstate
Properties and placed next to the Towpath Trail in
Steelyard Commons Shopping Center in 2006.
Inside the 600-square-foot building eight illuminated
photographs frame the space. A special exhibit “How
Steel is Made” is currently on loan to the center from
ArcelorMittal and includes a video presentation.
Visitor information will also be available at the
Center, which will be staffed by volunteers, and
open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the
summer.
The approximately 720-foot section of the Towpath
Trail parallels Old Harvard Road in Cleveland, north
of Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. It provides a safe
and direct connection to Jennings Road, giving
trail users a link to Steelyard Commons Shopping
Center and a trail that continues to the Tremont
neighborhood.
The trail was constructed by R.J. Platten
Contracting Company at a cost of $22,864.
Do you have an interest in Cleveland’s steel
history? We are looking for interested volunteers
to help staff the building on summer weekends.
Please contact Western Reserve Historical
Society, Becky Carlino at [email protected].

Tremont Trek: 2012 Home Tour
The 11th annual Tremont Trek will take place on Saturday,
June 16, 2012 from 4:30 – 10:30 p.m. Offering rare peaks
into six private homes in Cleveland’s historic Tremont
neighborhood, this progressive dinner party provides guests
with a different course at each home. Food will be provided by
Tremont restaurants and will be paired with wines selected by
Wine Trends, Inc.
The Trek was founded 11 years ago by Amo and Margy
Judd as a benefit designed to raise funds for small grants to
improve and enhance the quality of life in Tremont for residents,
business owners and visitors. The Tremont Trek is proud to
support our local community and in the last five years we have
granted over $45,000 to the following organizations: Tremont
History Project, Friends of Tremont Montessori School,
Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival – Children’s Area, TWDC
Safety Committee – Camera Project, Friends of Clark Field
– Replacement of play equipment, Merrick House – Sarah
Morrison Dance Project, Tremont Roundtable – “Maps Around
Tremont”, TWDC Holiday Lighting Project, TWDC Holiday
BrewHaHa, and Merrick House Yoga.
This year’s tour will begin and end at The Lot next to The
SouthSide, an urban eatery right in the heart of Tremont’s
shopping & restaurant district featuring 2012 Scenes Best of
Cleveland musician Brent Kirby accompanied by Nate Jones.
This years opening and closing party will really reflect the
upbeat vibe of the Tremont music scene.
Tickets are $110/person in advance and space is limited
to just 250 guests. Each ticket includes valet parking. Each
home is paired with one of the participating restaurants: Dante/
Ginko, Fat Cats, Parallax, Lago, Lolita and TyFun Thai Bistro.
Opening reception appetizers by Istanbul Grill, Prosperity
Social Club, The SouthSide and Tremont Tap House. Post
party desserts by A Cookie and a Cupcake, Grumpy’s Cafe
and Seballos Pastries with coffee provided by Civilization.
Six homes featured on the tour includes: Tremont’s finest
example of adaptive reuse of a former storefront which
features a combination of living and commercial space; a
fantastic sprawling ranch and one of Tremont’s first green
homes utilizing geothermo heating and solar light tubing, 2
upscale townhomes; an 1867 Victorian on Lincoln Park that
just completed full Historic renovation, and one of the most
architecturally unique and luxurious residences.
Visit www.tremonttrek.org to purchase your tickets.
Abbey Avenue One-Way Configuration
As promised in last month’s issue of Inside Tremont,
crews have begun the major renovation of the Abbey
Avenue Bridge. Crews will widen the Abbey Bridge
slightly to accommodate bike lanes and improved
sidewalks. The existing bridge pavement will be
resurfaced and new fencing and lighting will be
installed. Abbey Avenue has been reduced to a single
lane of westbound traffic – toward Ohio City. The oneway condition will remain in place for about 120 days
– or four months.
The posted detour for eastbound traffic directs
motorists to the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, and then uses
I-90 west to the W 14th Street exit to reach Tremont.
Motorists familiar with Tremont are using a wide variety
of alternative routes to reach their favorite destinations.
The “posted detour” is intended to serve unfamiliar
drivers, so it keeps them on major roadways.
Structural Steel Begins on the Main Bridge
Crews have begun to install the large, steel girders that
will ultimately support the bridge deck on the finished
structure. The earliest girders have been erected near
the Carnegie and Ontario intersection, forming the new
Ontario onramp and a portion of the Main Bridge that
will extend above the relocated Commercial Road. Be
sure to check out the photos of these massive girders
on our Facebook page.
E 9th Street Extension Opens for Traffic
Paving is complete and the E 9th Street Extension is
now available to provide new and improved access
to the Flats-Eastbank area, removing nearly 2,000
trucks each day from the Carnegie/Ontario intersection.
This roadway connects to Canal Road and the 2013
relocation of Commercial Road. The project website,
www.Innerbelt.org, includes a map of the new roadway
and other helpful information about traffic impacts
throughout the project area.
For more information on the Innerbelt Bridge
project,log-on to www.Innerbelt.org, call the project
hotline at 216-344-0069 or e-mail the team at Info@

Tremont History Project
CLEVELAND METRO HOSPITAL
The hospital was originally founded in
a poorhouse as City Hospital in 1837, in
Cleveland’s village-like downtown region. It
moved to Brooklyn Township’s Poorfarm on
it’s current site at the southern end of Scranton
Road in 1855. This move allowed the hospital
to take advantage of growth and expansion
opportunities.
A new, modern facility opened in 1889 to
better care for the sick and indigent and in 1922
City Hospital broke ground on an extensive
construction plan to expand the campus and
update facilities.
City Hospital was a leader in tuberculosis
research and treatment and in the late 1940s
and into the 1950s polio research, which led
the way for Dr. Jonas Salk’s development of the
polio vaccine.
Cuyahoga County took over the management
of the hospital, Metropolitan General Hospital
in 1958. And, in 1989 it and various satellites
became known as MetroHealth System.
If you have any questions or are interested
in volunteering with the Tremont History Project,
please contact Eileen Sotak at 440-785-6315.

Richard Hlaudy and Jeanette Rosas are excited to
become part of the Tremont neighborhood with their
new gallery, Chard. Located at the corner of Tremont
and Jefferson Avenues across from La Bodega, they
are specializing in nature and wilderness photography
and authentic alpaca ware from Peru.
Richard is a big game hunter of the Rocky Mountain
region, documenting his excursions of hunting elk, deer,
mountain lion, antelope and bear with photography and
HD film. All of the prints sold at Chard are printed on
Kodak Endura Metallic paper, which give the images
a chrome like finish as the colors shine and snap off
the paper.
Jeanette Rosas, a native of Lima, Peru has brought
some beautiful clothing, hats, scarves, shawls and
other handmade alpaca clothing to offer for sale in the
gallery. This Andean clothing really is beautiful and
stylish, and it is handmade in Peru.
Joe Kahn, longtime manager of Edison’s Pub, has opened

Inside Tremont
The City of Cleveland has successfully
implemented sustainable practices via the
NEW Cleveland Energy $aver program
The Cleveland Energy $aver program is receiving the highest level of attention
from Cleveland homeowners by reducing energy consumption. City of Cleveland
homeowners can save from 30 to 50% off the cost of qualified home energy
efficiency improvements through the Cleveland Energy $aver program brought to
you by the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Housing Network, and CASH Cleveland.
It is the first program of its kind to offer utility company rebates from Dominion
East Ohio and FirstEnergy in addition a 20% discount off of the cost of the work.
About half of home energy consumption is used for heating and cooling.
Many of today’s homes are drafty, leaky, hot in the summer, and uncomfortable
throughout the year. Many of them also suffer from a multitude of other problems
-- mold and moisture, high energy bills, and poor indoor air quality. Home
performance upgrades through the Cleveland Energy $aver program are solving
many of these problems, all while contributing to greater energy efficiency and
lower utility bills.
One of the program’s greatest attributes is its pool of highly qualified contractors
that have years of experience in energy efficiency. One such contractor, Martin
Berry of Berry Insulation, urges homeowners to act now.”The Cleveland Energy
$aver program is an unprecedented way for Cleveland residents to improve
the efficiency and safety of their homes. As a BPI certified Weatherization
contractor, we are proud to be a participating contractor in the Cleveland Energy
$aver program. We pledge to provide participating homeowners with the highest
quality service and installation.”
Suggested improvements might include attic insulation, furnace replacements,
programmable thermostats, and most importantly, the air sealing of thermal
bypasses that allow outside air into your home. And while the initial investment
may be significant, this program has made financing available to homeowners
through its lending partner, Cleveland Action to Support Housing (CASH).. As
Marcia Nolan, the executive director of CASH, recently noted, “The Cleveland
Energy $aver program is the perfect strategy for Cleveland property owners. For
the first time we are able to provide options to decrease their long term energy
expenses. Homeowners will see their energy bills immediately decrease and
they will receive the rebates as well. It is a great opportunity that people should
be very excited about.”
This is the most attractive rebate or incentive package ever offered to Cleveland’s
homeowners, but it won’t last long! You must act now to lock in savings that will
expire this Fall! Only 100 Clevelanders will benefit from this program, so act now
before it’s too late!
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Call Call 216.672.3535 to learn more about the program and find
out if you qualify for huge energy savings! You will receive a letter about the
program explaining your next steps.
Step 2: Schedule Schedule your low-cost energy assessment with a qualified home assessor. Receive a detailed home energy report with recommended
upgrades to achieve maximum energy and cost savings. Qualified personnel will help maximize discounts & rebates. You enjoy reduced energy bills!
Up-front cost to homeowners for energy assessment is $50. This cost will be
reimbursed to homeowners that complete the Energy $aver Program.
Step 3: Upgrade
Select the energy efficient improvements that are right for your home and budget. 2.3% interest rate financing is available through CASH Cleveland to fund
upgrade work. Select a contractor from our approved list and schedule your
energy efficient upgrades.
Step 4: Save
Sit back and enjoy your energy and cost savings. Receive a final savings report
6-12 months after your upgrades.
It’s as simple as that!

Auburn
At the May meeting, Tremont resident, Jim Kavanaugh presented
his plans for proposed development of a brewery and restaurant
that serves primarily brick oven pizza at 1205 Starkweather Avenue
(AKA American Legion Post 577/Theatre Building). The building is
owned by St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, and
has been extensively renovated by Tom Leneghan. After much
spirited discussion, a vote on block club support on the project was
postponed until the June meeting to allow for continued discussion
among the various parties involved. Beginning May 1st the Tremont
Farmers Market returned weekly to Lincoln Park on Tuesdays
from 4pm – 7pm through October 30th. The Market brings you the
finest in locally grown produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, tea, coffee,
and more. Thanks to Auburn member Yvonne Bruce, around 30
students of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, and
Ohio Canal Corridor for their clean-up efforts along Jefferson during
RiverSweep. Thanks to all Auburn residents who participated in
RiverSweep! Many thanks as well to Mark Smith and the residents
of the Lincoln Park Baths Condos for hosting us for a potluck
viewing/cheering party and “unofficial” water station on the tree
lawn of the Condos for the May 20th Cleveland Marathon. We
were joined by Condo residents, members of the North of Literary
Block Club, and Sherman DeLozier and a booth from the South
Side, who provided some beverages and breakfast items. Many
thanks to all! Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.

Dunham Tavern Museum, their Greenspace Initiative, and their
work with youth. MCC Co-Chair, Stephen Duirk, represented
HBR-MCC at the TWDC safety committee, and reported back
to the block club on safety developments. Our participation in
the May 12th RiverSweep was planned (we worked in Holmden
Community Garden and along Holmden Hill), and the block club
discussed plans to gather for a Marathon viewing party/unofficial
water station and potluck on W. 11th Street by Lincoln Park on
Sunday, May 20th - 7am - 10am. There was also a good discussion
on new member outreach including a “bring a neighbor” campaign,
outreach to Spanish speaking residents, and support for nonEnglish speaking attendees. Members voted to reschedule the July

Many thanks to NOL Team Coordinator, Jason McMinn, and NOL
block club volunteers for their great work with the RiverSweep
Clean-up along University Ridge. Your time, efforts and dedication
are deeply appreciated! At the May meeting Architect Barry
Smith of Novus Architects proposed a new construction single
family home for 2083 W 10th Street on the triangular site at the
intersection of W 10th Street and Thurman (across from Fat
Cats). Following the presentation, there was a Q & A time, and
the block club voted its support contingent that the house plans,
if changed, must return to the block club for review. There is a
proposal for development of a City land bank lot on the first
lot south of 2174 West 6th St (south of University Ave and just
north of Literary Ave ). The developer proposing to build a new
construction home on the lot is Trevor Hunt, a current Tremont
resident, and an employee of the City of Cleveland’s Planning
Department. Also at this meeting, the membership heard plans
for the City of Cleveland rollout of recycling carts to households
between W. 5th & W. 10 and between University and I-490 the
week of June 11th. Members finalized their plans for the upcoming
Cleveland Marathon viewing party/cheering section, potluck party,
and “unofficial” water station scheduled for Sunday, May 20th on
the tree lawn of the Lincoln Park Baths Condos. Our thanks to
the Mark Smith and the residents of the Condos for hosting us

GRACE OPENS FRI, June 29th
AT THE LIMINIS THEATER
TREMONTERS GET IN FREE FOR THURSDAY SHOWS.
Tremont’s resident professional theatre company,
convergence-continuum, continues its 2012 Season with
Grace by Craig Wright on Friday, June 29 at the Liminis
theater, 2438 Scranton Rd. An empty Florida condo.
Three dead bodies. Is this a shady crime scene or God’s
fateful hand at work? Perceptions keep changing as Grace
deconstructs the marriage of an intensely Christian couple,
their not-so-religious disfigured neighbor, a shaky business
deal – and the way religious ideas make sense, and
sometimes nonsense, of life’s events. This is a darkly funny,
sometimes hilarious, eerily tragic and provocative play.
Grace opens Fri, June 29, and runs Thu-Sat at 8 pm
through July 21. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12
for seniors (65+) and $10 for students. Reservations at
www.convergence-continuum.org
or 216-687-0074.
Tremonters are admitted free for Thursday shows (July 5,
12 and 19). Call ahead to reserve your seats.

Celebrate with Free Ice Cream Cake
On Saturday, June 30, come and celebrate as Tremont Scoops
begins its 12th year with free ice cream cake, slices all day,
while supplies last. (Our actual opening day in 2001 was on a
Saturday, too!) We will also have vegan ice cream cake for our
“dairy free” fans. We hope you can stop by and help us party at
Tremont Scoops, 2362 Professor, from noon to 11pm.
