PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Ah.... summer time in the Kawarthas.
What could be better? Well, we hope
that your Chamber can be better...
and we are working to make it so!
We have now completed our
Strategic Planning process. The
Strategic Plan is the key document
which will guide your Board’s
activities through the next three
years. And we don’t intend to let it
gather dust on our shelves either. As
President, I am committed to
ensuring that the findings of this soul
-searching exercise remain front and
centre at each of our monthly Board
meetings.
We have identified five Strategic
Directions for our Board:
PROUD MEMBER LOGO
We’ve created a logo just for
you, our Proud Members! Allow
other members of the
community to recognize and
support your involvement with
the chamber.





A membership to value
A proud regional focus
A destination with appeal
A strong financial future
An organization with capacity
Our Mission is to strengthen
business, regional recognition and
pride of place, by serving our
members and communities.
And our newly minted Vision is EKCC
As a member in good standing,
we invite you to use our logo
on all of your marketing and
communication materials your website, your business
cards, a company brochure,
etc. (Use by non-members is
strictly prohibited.) If using the
logo on your website we
encourage you to link it back
to the chamber website
KawarthaChamber.ca
as a trusted voice for business and a
champion of prosperity and vitality in
our region.
Thank you so much to all who
participated in the Strat Plan
process... we will be posting it on our
website in the Fall and we encourage
you to have a look. For those who
haven’t been involved...it’s never too
late. We are always looking for
volunteers to serve on our
Committees. Those of you with a
focus on destinations/tourism/
seasonal visitors will be encouraged
to bring your expertise to the table,
come the fall and winter.
We will begin work immediately on
an implementation plan for the nittygritty details on how to achieve our
goals and objectives. These individual
steps will be measurable, so we can
be clear at all times about how we
are doing.
For now, enjoy your “Kawarthas
Summer”, take time to visit our local
shops and businesses, eat local
whenever you can and have fun!
All the best,
Heather Sadler
President
“Our mission is to strengthen business, regional recognition and
pride of place, by serving our members and communities.”

MEMBER NEWS
SELWYN AND HABITAT
TOGETHER AGAIN
The Township of Selwyn is
supporting another Habitat for
Humanity build in the
municipality by selling a lot
that it owns on Fitzgerald
Street in Lakefield.
“Finding affordable housing
can be challenging and it is
exciting that we can once
again work with Habitat for
Humanity Peterborough and
District to support the creation
of an affordable home for a
family in our Township” said
Mayor Mary Smith.
“Habitat Peterborough and
District is excited about our
partnering once again with
the Township of Selwyn.
Providing a ‘hand up’ is what
this project is all about. We
recognized that our first build
in Lakefield changed the lives
of not only the new
homeowners but also for the
sponsors and volunteers. We
know that this will happen
again with this second build.”
states Steve Smith, Habitat for
Humanity Peterborough &
District Board Chair.
For more information on
Habitat visit their website.

GRAND CHAMPION
REWIND TIME
On June 15 and 16, Joe and Hazel
Cook of Blossom Hill Nursery
attended the Canadian Peony Society
annual convention at Rosemere, a
suburb of Montreal, Quebec. The
highlight of the convention was the
floral competition of over 600 stems
of peonies entered in more than 100
categories. From the first prize
winners, the best 12 were chosen for
the Court of Honor and the Grand
Champion chosen from these. Six
blooms from the Cook's entries were
placed on the Court of Honor and
their entry of a large yellow
intersectional peony, Garden
Treasure, was declared the Grand
Champion! Other entries were from
The Ottawa Experimental Farm,
Montreal Botanical Gardens and
numerous businesses and individuals.
Let's Get Digital has embarked on
another exciting adventure by
opening up "Rewind Museum" and
the support and reception received
already has been outstanding. If you
have any old electronics, computers
or video games they would certainly
love to add them to their collection,
either by donation or on loan.
Congratulations!

EASTERN ONTARIO AND THE WORLD
The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) created the Eastern Ontario
Regional Network (EORN) to spearhead and manage building Ontario’s largest
rural broadband project. The project aims to improve access to the Internet
with higher speeds and bandwidth to at least 95 per cent of homes and
businesses in Eastern Ontario. The network covers an area of more than
50,000 square kilometres and will reach nearly one million people in 11
counties and two single tier cities.
The $170-million project is being built through the support of federal,
provincial, municipal and private sector funding. Including private sector in-kind
contributions, the total value of the project has risen to more than $260
million.
To date, the network has made substantial progress and released a Project
Update in June which includes notable milestones thus far.
For more information on EORN and to read the full report, click here.
“Creating a Couple status for Health & Dental rates is just one of many reasons
why the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan is the largest insurer of
group benefits for small businesses in Canada.”
COUPLE RATES: SMART WAY TO SAVE MONEY
The Chambers of Commerce Group
Insurance Plan has, in addition, to
the ‘Single’ & ‘Family’ rates, which are
the industry standard, introduced a
third martial status to their benefit
program. They have created a
‘Couple’ rate for a number of their
Health & Dental options.
The Couple rate is available to
employees who require coverage for
themselves and an adult partner and
also to employees who are single
parents with a child.
When you consider that Baby
Boomers make up approximately
30% of the work force and many of
them are now empty nesters, the
introduction of Couple rates is
perfectly timed. The number of single
parent families are also significant
today.
Not only is this a more equitable way
of providing benefits to insured firms,
it is also current with the times and
can save considerable money for
them and their employees.. When
comparing the premium costs
between the two statuses within the
Chambers Plan, the Couple Health
rates are a little better than 23% less
than the Family Health rates. The
Couple Dental rates are even better
at close to 30% less.
Family Health & Dental rates are
priced for families with three or more
members. Take a moment and
consider how many of your present
employees would qualify for Couple
rates. For each one of them, your
firm could save between $800 to
$1000 per year on average for their
combined Health & Dental coverage.
Creating a Couple status for Health &
Dental rates is just one of many
reasons why the Chambers of
Commerce Group Insurance Plan is
the largest insurer of group benefits
for small businesses in Canada.
If you wish to know more about the
many benefits of the Chambers of
Commerce Group Insurance Plan,
please call Brian, The Life Insurance
Guy at 705.741.1400. You can also
