Rem-UMC-1911-1927
1 2 REMINGTON .22 BOXES 1911 TO 1928 Richard Rains The history of Remington .22 boxes can be traced back to when two companies, C. D. Leet and the Crittenden & Tibbals Manufacturing Company were purchased by Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham in 1866. The Union Metallic Cartridge & Cap Company was formed. A year later, in August 1867, the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC) was incorporated in Bridgeport Connecticut. UMC grew to be one of the largest producers of metallic cartridges and shotshells in the world. In 1911 the UMC and Remington Arms Company were merged into the Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Company. This catalog is an attempt to list the .22 boxes produced by Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Company, also known as Rem-UMC, from 1911 to 1920 and Remington Arms Company Inc. from 1920 to until the introduction of non-corrosive Kleanbore priming in 1927. There are six chapters based on different company logos and changes in company addresses. A description of the range of dates is given in each chapter. Many of these dates overlap by several years with other boxes. For example box lot numbers for REM-2 boxes start in 1911 and go to 1922 even though other styles of boxes were introduced earlier than 1922. Dates on REM3 boxes are from 1917 to 1924. Dates on REM-4 boxes start in 1920 and go to 1922. Boxes in the REM-5 series go from 1920 to1926, and boxes from the REM-6 series go from 1922 to 1928. There is overlap on all of these series and these dates could change some with study of additional boxes. (Note: A description of the differences between REM-1, REM-2, REM-3, REM-4, REM-5, and REM-6 is given on the following pages.) There are a couple of reasons for the overlap of the dates. First, Remington did not throw anything away that they may be able to use at a later date. Second many of these dates that overlap are on boxes like BB Caps and Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) boxes that are low production boxes. Cartridges like .22 Short or .22 Long Rifle which are high production would use many more labels or boxes so they would be printed more often and would reflect changes in company name or box style quicker than the low production boxes. The chapters in this catalog are labeled Rem-1 to Rem-6. Each box in a chapter has an unique label such as S-1a. This numbering system was developed by Tony Dunn in A CATALOG OF THE .22 BOXES OF THE U.S.A.. This numbering system has proven to be very useful over the year in describing .22 boxes. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This checklist is the work of several people. Bob Mancini did much of the original work by cataloging Russ Heath’s collection as well as his own. He also assembled many of the boxes from the Richard Rains and Rodney Earle collections. In addition Dave Clemence contributed numerous examples from his collection. Rodney Earle spent countless hours formatting this checklist. Without their contributions the checklist would not be possible. 3 Section one pictures the split logo boxes. These pages are labeled REM-1. A split logo box is defined as a box that has UMC on one side and Remington on the other side of the top label. Date codes on these boxes show that they were made from 1911 to 1913. All boxes are two-piece half-split construction with paste on labels. Section two lists the combined logo boxes. These pages are labeled REM-2. A combined logo box has REMINGTON over UMC in a red ball on the top label on the box. The early combined logo boxes have the UMC letters much larger than the REMINGTON. The boxes with the large UMC letters have date codes from 1911 to late 1914. The 1913 REM-UMC calendar has this style of logo. Date codes have been found on the later REM-2 boxes from 1914 to 1922. The REM-2 boxes outnumber all of the other Remington boxes in the checklist combined. All the REM-2 boxes are two-piece half-split construction with paste on labels. Large UMC Small UMC 4 Section three lists boxes with the company address of THE REMINGTONARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY and has INCOPORATED under the company name. THE REMINGTONARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY was incorporated January 15, 1916. Boxes with this address have date codes ranging from 1917 to 1924. Again notice the dates overlapping with REM-2 and REM-4, 5, & 6 boxes. It should be said that REM1, 2, and 3 boxes are two-piece half-split construction with paste on labels. Note INCOPORATED under name Section four lists boxes that are similar to REM -3 boxes except REM-4 boxes are one-piece endflap box construction. The REM-4 boxes have the same company address as REM-3 boxes. Date codes on these boxes range from 1920 to 1922. Note there are six boxes on pages 4A. These boxes have top-hinged endflap boxes that are glued to the tray inside the box. The endflaps do not have the part of the endflap that slides into the box. These may be prototype endflap boxes. There are no lot numbers on any of these boxes, so the exact date of manufacture is not known but are probably from the late teens. 5 Section five lists boxes with the company address of REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY Inc. and has SUCCESSORS TO REMINGTON ARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY INC. under the company name. In 1920 Remington incorporated in Delaware. These boxes reflect the name change and date codes range from 1920 to 1926. Like REM-4 all REM-5 boxes are one-piece endflap construction. Section six lists boxes with the company address of REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY Inc. Date codes on these boxes range from 1922 to 1928. All of these REM-6 boxes are one-piece endflap boxes. With the introduction of KLEANBORE priming, Remington changed their box color to green. The word REMINGTON is red and is printed on a white dogbone shaped area, hence the name “DOGBONE.” Lesmok powder was dropped from the product line shortly after the introduction of KLEANBORE priming in 1927 except in PALMA MATCH boxes, which are red.
