La Vega Pirates Education Foundation
The LEAD program is a business and education partnership sponsored
by the Greater Waco Chamber. The program pairs Waco High School, University High School, Rapoport Academy, La Vega High School, Midway High
School and Harmony Science Academy students with business leaders to
foster mentoring relationships that educate and expose students to various
business fields.
LEAD Mentors are committed to the development of students with leadership potential who need guidance and encouragement towards the pursuit
of higher education and career goals, which in turn ensures greater employability and quality of life.
LEAD mentors are expected to meet with their students at least twice
monthly with at least one of these meetings at a business tour that the
chamber coordinates. Students are mentored by business professionals with
similar aspirations and interests.
Seniors in the program can apply for the Bradley Ray Hulse $20,000 Memorial Scholarship that is awarded at the annual scholarship banquet.
The LEAD program will begin its ninth year in August 2015 and is proud
of its 100 percent graduation rate with all students having gone onto some
form of higher education. Currently 141 students and 71 mentors are in the
program.
“With the addition of La Vega High School this summer our hope is to find
mentors in close proximity to the school,” said LEAD director Rachel Martinez.
For more information about the program, to become a mentor, open the
doors of your business for a tour or become a sponsor, contact Martinez at
[email protected] or (254) 757-5633.

The Caritas Store at 3016
Bellmead Drive hosted a
ribbon cutting and grand
re-opening June 19.
The event was attended
by the Bellmead Chamber
of Commerce and supporters.
The newly renovated
store sells clothing, household goods, Baylor spirit
items and seasonal decor.
Gently used and new
items are donated to be
resold with profits going
to support the mission of
Caritas.
Caritas of Waco is a nonprofit charity organization
founded in 1967 by the
Austin Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church but
has been an independent
ecumenical agency since
1979.
Caritas offers food, clothing, household items and
travel to anyone, regardless
of race, age, sex, ethnicity
or location.
Caritas is supported
through various faith, civic
and service organizations,
charitable foundations, area
businesses and individuals.
Community volunteers
are vital to the making Cartias a fully functioning organization that reaches the
community in several levels.
“The volunteers help us
save money and put money
back into helping others,”
said Don Taylor, retail operations manager at the
Caritas store in Bellmead.
“We’re becoming more

of a variety of store, and we
are gearing ourselves into
more concise categories of
ceramics, furniture, antique,
clothing, artwork and décor,”
he said. “We’re trying to be
more of cross store that a
little bit of everything—electronics, TVs, boom boxes,
VCRs. H-E-B donates some
of this stuff to us.”
The store strives to provide quality merchandise at
a good price, added Taylor.
“We have good deals,
good prices and all of our
items are checked and
cleaned before we put them
out for sale.”
Recent changes to the
store include a new point-ofsale system and new signs
throughout to clearly mark
merchandise for shoppers.
“We repainted the store
and added 40 new display
tables. We revamped the
stock rooms and the bathrooms with new vanities, toilets and floors,” said Taylor.
The ramp for deliveries
was rebuilt, and the all the
light fixtures redone.
The store is part of the
Caritas system by supporting the main warehouse with
clothing.
“We sometimes help people with their electricity bill
and their rent and provide
vouchers for clothing. Everything is funneled back
into the programs,” he said.
“Anything we do in the
thrift stores directly goes
back into everything caritas does in the community.
We’re tyring to help the
community in any way we
can.”
The food pantry at 15th
Street and Mary Avenue
in Waco is a major part of
of the services that Caritas
provices.
“We have a vegetable
program. They actually
have a day where people
can come through and
they just give it away to
them. They don’t have to go
through the system. They
offer this when they have
the stockpiles,” said Taylor.
They main system is
based on the non-perishable foods.
Caritas is also planning a Christmas in July
at the Franklin Avenue and
Bellmead locations and the
warehouse in Robinson.
“We have a lot of Christmas stuff. We’re going to

La Vega ISD Child Nutrition Department
2015 Recipients of the Carrying the Ball award
The Carrying the Ball tradition dates back to 2003 when
Dr. Johnny Miller, convocation speaker at the beginning of
the school year, used a football as a “prop” to make the point
of making a difference and being a ball carrier and not just a
standby observer. At the 2003 Employee Awards Assembly, La
Vega began the practice of awarding the ball to an individual
or group who have made an impact on getting things done
to help move LVISD toward the “goal line.” The LVISD Child
Nutrition Department was selected this year because they
have embraced the federal and state nutritional guideline
changes made during the last couple of years and successfully implemented two new federal programs allowing all of
La Vega students to eat free breakfast and lunch and provide
a free afternoon meal for our after school ACE and tutored
students. Dave Thiel with Aramark is the Director of Child
Nutrition Services.
This year’s accomplishments include:
• Served 649,334 breakfast and lunch meals
• Served 40,162 meals through the first full year of the after
school meal program
• Provided food samples to educate and motivate students to
try different food types
• Awarded a $500 grant from Aramark for having the most
student survey response in Aramark’s south region
• Cafeteria managers participated in leadership book studies the last two year and have shown motivation, grown as
leaders on their campuses and continue to strive to improve

all students to become productive citizens and

Each school year, when we return from

previous school year. The research is clear
that children who do not read during the
summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative,
long-term effect. In an effort to combat reading
loss, we will be supplying books at all levels
for summer reading. This is an opportunity for
our entire community to be part of the solution
to the summer reading loss problem.
The mobile lending library will operate
on the honor system, whereby no penalties
or fines will be assessed for lost or overdue
books. The purpose of the bookmobile is to
keep books in the hands of our students and
to cultivate a culture of literacy in our community. We are hoping that families will come
on board to choose books together. We have
been blessed by donations from community
members, area churches, and LVISD faculty
and staff members to supply our bookmobile
with gently used books. This effort has truly
become a labor of love! We hope you will
join in the fun as we kick off our La Vega ISD
Bookmobile.
