National Library Week
Library Hours
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of
our nation’s libraries. Today libraries are no longer just places for books! Libraries now offer
an assortment of digital programs and services including ebooks, streaming music, and
technology training. We also present programs that entertain as well as educate. We hope
you will stop by and enjoy the special programs we have planned to celebrate! Library Closed

Urban Chickens 101
Sunday, April 10 at 2 pm
Learn how simple and fun it is to raise
chickens in your own backyard. The folks
from Tri-County Stockdale will discuss
your options for breeds, raising chicks,
building a coop, chicken care and
much more.
You’ve always loved
the movie, now come
and sing-a-long as
we kickoff National
Library Week with
The Wizard of Oz.
You will be welcomed
by life-size photorealistic cutouts of Wizard of Oz characters.
Lyrics will appear on screen so everyone can
sing along with Dorothy and the Oz gang.
Boo the Wicked Witch, blow bubbles when
you see a rainbow, click your heels with
Dorothy, sound the kazoo in Munchkinland
and much more! Dress as your favorite
Wizard of Oz character and don’t forget
your camera! We’re off to see the Wizard
and we hope you are too!

Wednesday, April 13 at 7 pm
Mo’ Beat Blues features Samuel Lozada
and his wife Janice. They’ll bring their
high energy style to a wide variety of
music including blues, jazz, R&B, country, rock, swing and rat pack – a little bit
of everything! They deliver soulful vocals
and impressive harmonica solos, sprinkled
with comedic anecdotes. Be sure to come
because a good time will be had by all!

Custom Hoodies
Saturday, March 5 at 1 pm
Swing by the library to add your own
custom design to a hoodie! We’ll provide
everything you need for free, including
the hoodies, but space is extremely
limited so register early.
Divergent Book Discussion
and Movie Trip
Tuesday, March 8 at 6 pm
The new Divergent movie, Allegiant,
releases on March 18th, and here’s your
chance to score some free tickets! Stop
by our Divergent book discussion, let us
know what you think of the series, and
you will be given free passes to the movie!
Henna Tattoos
Thursday, April 21 at 6 pm
Add a little ink to your look with Henna
Tattoos! Using paste made from the
Henna plant, tattoos can be drawn on the
body that appear orange or dark maroon
that eventually fade away in about two
weeks. This is a great chance for you
to add intricate designs to your arms
without fear!
Tabletop Gaming
Splendor. Feel free to bring your own
games as well!
Perler Crafts
Saturday, May 28 at 1 pm
ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS: You’re
invited to learn how to create a variety of
creatures, popular video game characters,
and cartoon characters from Perler beads!
The process is simple and all materials
will be provided.

Swing by the library with your friends

games around! We’ll have a large

and Munchkin to Arcadia Quest and

Do you want to show off your leadership skills? Can’t get
enough volunteering? Or are you simply looking for a way
to be more involved with other teens at the library? There’s
always something new and kids in grades 6 and up can be
a part of it. Join us and share your opinions about what
you’d like to see and do at the library.

You Can Brew It!
Wednesday, March 9 at 7 pm
Americans have been brewing beer in their homes since
colonial times. Join Scott Pointon as he explains what you
need to know to brew your own beer. He will discuss the styles
of beer that can be brewed at home, as well as the equipment,
ingredients and the basic steps of the brewing process.
Knit & Crochet Class
3rd Wednesday of each month at 6 pm
March 16, April 20, May 18
Adults and teens interested in knitting and crochet are
invited to join Blanca Delgado at the library each month to
learn and share ideas. Bring a skein of yarn and needles and
get ready to stitch! All skill levels are welcome.
Lantern Craft
Wednesday, March 23 at 7 pm
Kristina Morgan will show you how to make your very own
twine-wrapped-vase lantern. Registration is limited so be
sure to sign up early.
White Sox & Cubs Baseball
Wednesday, April 27 at 7 pm
and conversation. No art experience required, supplies will
be provided. Be sure to register early, space is limited.
Mariachi Band
Wednesday, May 4 at 7 pm
Celebrate Mexican heritage on the eve of the Cinco de
Mayo with Mariachi Potosino. Under the direction of Cesar
Villalobos, they will present authentic traditional music that
your family with enjoy. Refreshments provided by Navarro’s
Bakery in Alsip and El Ranchito Market in Blue Island.
Nice Work If You Can Get It
Thursday, May 12 at 12 pm
Join us on a trip to the Theater at the Center in Munster to
see this new Gershwin Broadway musical comedy. Set in
the Roaring Twenties, this sparkling musical is filled with
exciting dance numbers, glittering costumes and a wonderful
love story. Bus transportation from the library to and
from the theater will be provided. Limited to 36 AlsipMerrionette Park Library cardholders.
June’s Got the Cash Tribute Show
Tuesday, May 17 at 1:30 pm
Heritage II Clubhouse, 3715 W. 123rd Place
Play ball! Join author and sports historian Charles Billington as
he discusses the history of Chicago’s two professional baseball
teams. Whether you’re a North Side or South Side fan, you are
sure to enjoy this entertaining and educational presentation.
Enjoy an afternoon filled with the music of the late and great
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. This traveling musical
theater show features bits of comedy along with vintage costume changes, stage props and all of Johnny and June’s favorite
hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Light refreshments provided.

Get ready to sing, clap, bounce, and
listen to nursery rhymes and simple
stories with your baby.

for books, rhymes, parachute play, and
activities that are centered on different
letters of the alphabet.

Toddlers will explore activities that
engage the senses and help them
understand the world around them.

Independent 3 to 5 year olds, not yet
in Kindergarten. Join us for a half hour
of stories, songs, and more to build
early literacy skills and explore the
great things at the library.

caregivers and little ones. Limited to the first 24 children and their caregivers.

Grades 2 to 5. This program will put the Fizz, Boom,
Bang into exploring the fun side of science in this
hands-on program. Get ready to go green!
Saturday Specials
Checkmate
Saturdays from 10-11 am
Grades 1 and up. Learn new moves and test your skills! Our
instructor will teach a new move each week to develop your
competitive edge. Chess teaches concentration, focus, logic, and
outcome, while promoting the STEM initiative. For all levels –
beginners through experienced.
Garden Sprouts
Tuesdays from 4-4:30 pm
Grades K to 5. Excited about dirt or curious about
gardening? Then this is for you! Enjoy five weeks of
stories and projects! Spark an interest in gardening,
nutrition, and the environment with our creative
hands-on learning experiences (this program supports
the principles of STEM).
Play-Doh Adventures
Saturdays from 2-2:30 pm
All ages. Use your imagination and create a masterpiece with
Play-Doh. We will provide the Play-Doh.

Grades 1 and up. Do you love Minecraft? Want to
meet others who love it just as much as you? Join us
as we use the Minecraft server to create a safe and

circuit board
that can be
plugged into
a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Attend
this fun demonstration, and watch as a
simple motherboard is used to make
circuits, turn on LED lights, create
games and support DIY projects.

allows Gmail users to create files,
store them online, and access them

Library card expiring soon? Each month our Patron Services
Department will mail postcards reminders. When it’s time to
renew your library card, we’ll send one to you. Bring the
postcard back to the library when you renew your library card
and receive a prize!
Isn’t It Romantic?
The library has a new romance book club. We’ll cover the
genre in all its aspects – historical, contemporary, paranormal,
military, and romantic suspense. The group’s first meeting will
be Wednesday, April 6 at 7 pm. We’ll discuss the historical
romance Devil’s Cub by the author considered by many to be
the creator of the Regency romance, Georgette Heyer.
Be sure to register so we’ll be sure to have enough light refreshments for all. Copies of the book will be available for checkout
the second week in March. You can pick it up at the Patron
Services Desk. Don’t miss our first meeting so you can help
choose the titles for our future discussions.

Book Discussion Group
This book group meets the first Thursday of each month
at 7 p.m. We are always open to new members; book
group is a great way to meet fellow bibliophiles. Also,
we cover varying genres so it provides an opportunity to
read outside your usual preferences. The library provides
the book to check out, refreshments and a moderator.
