Art Gems supports Creative Works Studio, an arts based occupational therapy studio program
in the community, offering healing and recovery through creative art for people living with serious
and persistent mental illness. Creative Works Studio is a non-denominational initiative of
the Inner City Health Program of St Michael’s Hospital and operates in partnership with
Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes Inc. It was founded in 1998 and is led by its pioneer,
Isabel Fryszberg, an occupational therapist and practicing artist. Open throughout the week,
the Studio receives clients from mental health agencies across the city and, through over 2,500
client visits a year, helps them make a comfortable return to active life in the larger community.

St. Michael’s Hospital provides compassionate care to all who walk through its doors. The Hospital
also provides outstanding medical education to future health care professionals in more than 23
academic disciplines. Critical care and trauma, heart disease, neurosurgery, diabetes, cancer care,
and care of the homeless are among the Hospital’s recognized areas of expertise. Through the
Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, research at St. Michael’s Hospital
is recognized and put into practice around the world. Founded in 1892, the Hospital is fully affiliated
with the University of Toronto.

The Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd have been providing service in Toronto, to people who are
homeless, since 1963. Good Shepherd Non-Profit Homes Inc. was founded in 1989 to develop
supportive housing and services in Hamilton and Toronto for persons who experience mental illness
and addictions and are homeless. Several of its facilities, including the Liberty Building which houses
Creative Works Studio, provide subsidized housing and support for adults living with mental illness and
addictions who are on the road to recovery.
