President's Message
By Simon Forder, Principal Consultant and CEO
Hyde Engineering + Consulting, Inc.
I wanted to send a note of introduction. My name is Simon Forder and I am
your new ISPE San Francisco/Bay Area Chapter President. I will serve you
until August 2015. I am excited about the opportunity to serve the Bay Area
Board and help build our Chapter. A lot of you know me, but for those that
don't, I'll take a minute and answer the question: Who is Simon Forder?
I grew up in the Bay Area after emigrating to the USA from England when I was
two years old. I went to high school in the North Bay and was first introduced to
the biotechnology business during a career day. At the career day, Herb Boyer
(Founder of Genentech) spoke of the "biotechnology revolution" that was coming and how we students
needed to get involved. As a result, I found myself drawn to studies at UC Davis that prepared me for the
Biotechnology industry ( there were no Biotech programs in those days). I then graduated and got my first
job at Cetus. From Cetus, I started with a company called Biosys and we worked with Archer Daniel
Midlands (Supermarket to the World!) on a number of products. From ADM, I worked for Inhale
Therapeutics (Nektar - now Novartis) and then on to Hyde Engineering + Consulting. I have been at Hyde
for 11 years now. Along the way, I have met so many great people. People I call friends, mentors, and
people I have truly enjoyed working with. Many of them are ISPE Members and this was how I became
involved in the local Chapter.
The Chapter will be publishing this newsletter once a month this year. I plan to write a once-a-month
Presidents message. Next month, I will give some updates from the ISPE Annual Meeting as well as some
info on what we will be focusing on this year. Stay tuned!
Regards,
Simon Forder

In September the Board of Directors and the Program Committee met with the Advisory Council to have an
interactive planning session for potential future topics. The Advisory Council is made up of key executives
from the local owner/operating companies. We had an
excellent turnout and very productive evening.
The goal of the session was to have an informal
discussion on topics and issues that owners are
facing in the industry and establish a list of topics from
which ISPE can use as future topics for programs,
commuter conferences or ad hoc committees. We
identified topics both of current concern and interest
and as related to future direction of the industry as
well as for Bay Area technology growth. The program
committee will now take that information and will begin
the planning process for future programs.

Chocolate Factory Update
by Heather Bennett of ACCO Engineered Systems
The school year has started and the ISPE SF
Chocolate Factory is off to a great start. This
program teaches 5th graders about construction and
the pharmaceutical industry by building models of
chocolate factories. DPR and the ISPEstudents at
San Jose State University have already volunteered their time, and there are dates still open for companies
to sign up and help out in 2015: 1/30, 3/6, and 5/8.

With the leadership and support of the San Francisco & Bay Area Chapter, and organized from Japan by
Shigeru Nakamura, Affiliate Vice Chairman, and Michael Lucey, Adjunct Director, closely supported by the
Committee members, the "2014 US Pharmaceutical Plant Tour" group visited multiple plants in the Bay
Area over three days from October 8 to 10. This was followed by a facility visit in Santa Monica and then
participation by all at the ISPE Annual Meeting in Las Vegas. The travelling group from throughout Japan,
all ISPE, comprised a total of 20 members.
The Novartis campus visited, secured with the efforts of Dome as constructor, is conveniently located in
San Carlos just a short drive from San Francisco. It was quickly noted that the facility is unique in that it
functions as a technology research & development (TRD) site as well as a commercial production facility for
the pharmaceutical business, employing more than 250.
The TRD site is focused on the development of pharmaceuticals for respiratory diseases. Prime function is
the production of dry-powder Tobramycin inhalant for the TOBI Podhaler used in the prevention/treatment of
chronic pulmonary diseases.
Although the production suite room was at the commissioning stage, Tour members were permitted to enter
the clean area and were able to closely observe actual equipment and engage in valuable Q&A time.
It was a highly informative visit and all of from Japan wish to express their sincere gratitude to those
responsible at Novartis and Dome for creating s
uch an excellent opportunity. Impressed to the last,
great delight was taken by the visitors at departure in
the large-sized heavyweight "ball" of expired badges-a
fine testament to the many who have been permitted to
share in the facility!
