Note From the Pro
In this issue you will find a copy of the 2013
tournament schedule. Please keep a copy of the
schedule, so that you may stay informed of upcoming
events. The 2013 Tournament Book is also ready
and available on the website and you can pick up a
hard copy in the Proshop, if you prefer. Please read
through the book for updates on all of our
tournament policies and use it to plan your season.
The golf committee has again worked hard to try to
create a comprehensive schedule that incorporates
different formats and events for all skill levels. The
goal is to provide a wide variety of tournament
options so that all members can find the type of
event that they prefer. We also want to recognize
and thank Dick Shaw, Jeff Hemphill and Peggy Beale
for their many years of work as outgoing members
of the golf committee and we welcome Blair
Crawford, Tonya Martin and David Suggs as new
members of the committee.
Also, we have a new Handicap and Tournament
system going into effect this year, which should be up
and running shortly. GHIN (Golf Handicap and
Information Network) is an easy way to post scores,
both home and away at any course on the GHIN
system. GHIN also provides many exciting features
including online handicap look up using your GHIN
number (which you will receive) and Smartphone
Applications that will allow you to post scores from
your handheld device. Please visit the golf shop for
more information or for any questions you may
have.
Cheers, and Happy New Year,

Madison’s Instructional Corner
With the start of a New Year it’s time for a new you
on the golf course. We have all taken time off from
our game for the holidays and cold weather so
before we get back out on the links we need to get
our body golf ready. If you really want to improve
your game this year here are a few things to
consider that will help with your game. Improving
your flexibility, strength, and endurance will help you
improve your game. To improve your endurance on
the course try walking 9 holes once a week or
walking around the neighborhood for 30 minutes a
few times a week. I see a lot of players who start of
the round well but then falter towards the end of
the round because they have lost their stamina.
Another good way to keep up your stamina during
your round is to make sure you are snaking through
out the round. Eating trail mix, granola bars, crackers
or a sandwich are some good ideas of things to eat
during your round. Good flexibility is a key to a
good golf swing it can help you hit longer drives and
shoot lower scores by helping you with your swing
mechanics. I recommend stretching every morning
for 15 to 20 minutes. Anyone who is interested I
will have a stretching routine available for you to
pick up in the Pro Shop. I look forward to seeing
everyone back out on the links and improving their
game.

used on weekends, weather permitting.
This will help maintain the quality of the
turf during the slower growing season.
Also, we would like to remind our members
that range balls and bags are NOT to be
removed from the driving range. If you have
any bags or balls in your cars, golf carts, or
garage, we ask that you please return them

Winter Course Conditions
As we find ourselves in the heart of the winter months there are a few things to be aware of on the golf course. The base Bermuda
grass is now dormant, so we would like to provide some insight and information as to how the course will look and play, as well as
the reason why we have implemented our current agronomical programs.
Greens - In 2011, we had an independent Golf Course Management Company (IGM) evaluate course conditions and make
recommendations for improved course upkeep. While the overall grade of the course was very high, they did have some
recommendations that we have implemented. One was to skip overseeding of our greens in the off-season. Instead, we have applied
Forsome pigment to the greens. This pigment helps maintain the green color in the grass blade during the dormant season.
Overseeding on golf courses is typically performed for one reason, to enhance esthetics. Winter overseed grasses provide a
temporary green grass playing surface during the dormant period, while the Bermuda base grass is not growing. Some courses dye
their greens with artificial color to provide a green surface. The pigment that we are utilizing keeps the grass blade itself green.
This is the second consecutive winter that we have not overseeded greens complexes on the golf course. This provides a much
needed break for the greens. Due to the age of our greens, the Bermuda base Tiff Dwarf grass has progressively formed mutations
and slowed in transition. This transition period applies stress to the plant, which weakens the root system. By once again skipping
overseeding, we expect to see a stronger plant root in the spring season and healthy, full coverage of the Bermuda grass.
There are a couple things to keep in mind when playing on dormant greens:
• Ball marks will be more prevalent. So, please help repair them when you see them.
• The greens will putt faster than non-overseeded greens, so remember to take that into account when reading putts,
especially when putting downhill.
• Pin positions will be rotated less frequently. Green speed, player traffic and weather will dictate how frequently we will be
able to locate new holes on the course. Please excuse us as we are trying to protect the greens through the winter.
Tees – Due to the high concentration of divots and volume of shots made from our tee boxes, all tee areas on the golf course have
been overseeded with Rye grass. This will help cover divots throughout the off-season and provide an esthetically pleasing teeing area
for our golfers. The tee boxes will appear greener in color for the winter than the fairways and rough, which is expected. We will see
green grass on the tee boxes especially during colder temperatures as the Rye grass grows and the Bermuda base is dormant.
Fairways – All fairways have also not been overseeded this off-season, which is a continuation of our current practice over the past
three years. Not overseeding fairways has proven to enhance turf health and condition of the fairways during the growing season, as
evident over the past summers. Fairways can be harder to maintain than greens and tees due to the “gumbo” based soil that the
fairway turf lies on, which keeps the root system shallow. The sand based soil found in the greens complexes is more conducive to
growing deep roots. In preparation for the dormant season, the fairway heights were raised from ½” to ¾”, to provide a thicker base
on the fairways, which is the highest height recommended by the USGA. When Bermuda grass is mowed higher than ¾”, the golf ball
will tend to nestle down into the grass, rather than sit up on the grass. As a comparison, our roughs are mowed at a height of 1 ¼”and
we know what kind of lies you can find in our rough. We have heard some comments that areas of the fairways appear to be mowed
shorter than ¾”, but this is caused by two things:
• First is dormancy. When the Bermuda grass plant is not growing, the grass blades tend to lay down, rather than stand up as
they typically would during warm weather growing periods. This “laying down” makes the fairway appear to be mown shorter.
• Second is compaction. Golf car, foot and machine traffic will “mat down” the grass blades. Without warm weather, the
Bermuda grass does not grow and will not be able to stand back up, causing the appearance of being closely mown.
Compaction is more evident in the high traffic areas of the golf course, such as cart entry/exit areas and natural path areas
between mounds.
Remember that divots will be more visible on dormant turf, as well. Please help refill divots with sand whenever possible. We hope
that these changes will result in marked improvement in future course conditions. As usual, we look forward to your comments
regarding playability of the course. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Coosaw Creek
Country Club
“IMPORTANT NOTICE”
To: All Coosaw Creek Country Club Members
This note is being distributed to address serious issues concerning the unauthorized access to golf course property and cart paths by
non-golfing individuals, plus the illegal use of Personal Golf Carts.
We have recently received two reports of drivers nearly hitting children driving personal golf carts on the streets of the community at
night. One driver said he was not sure how he missed the cart that was driving down the middle of the street in the dark. We have also
received many other complaints of Children driving Personal Carts illegally in the Community. We have reminded the Police to ticket
any driver without a driver’s license that is caught driving a Personal Golf Cart inside the gate.
We remind all members that the Country Club’s Rules and Regulations prohibit the use of the golf course and the cart paths during
certain times of the day. The Rules and Regulations (Rev. May 2010), specifically, Paragraph 16 on Page 14 under General Golf Rules is
quoted below:
“Personal golf carts, motorized vehicles, bicycling, skateboarding and
rollerblading are not permitted on the golf course or golf cart paths.
Jogging, recreational walking and pet walking is allowed on Golf Cart
Paths only during non-business hours (before 7:00a.m. and after dusk).”
If you are on the Golf Course, as a non-golfer, it is your responsibility to avoid golfers. If you are injured for any reason on the golf course
or if you cause damage while on the golf course it is your responsibility and you are liable. This also applies to your children. We are
especially concerned that some are allowing their children to play and walk on the course. We are seeing costly damage to the course
by children playing on the course and in the sand traps. Again, the Club will not be responsible if a child is harmed or injured on the
course.
In an attempt to avoid possible injury to a resident, liability issues for the Club, damage to the golf course and possible loss of Security
to the community this is considered “written” notice to all residents that unauthorized entry on golf course property or cart paths by
non-golfers during business hours is considered trespassing. Other prohibited actions on the golf course include the unauthorized play
and/or practice on the course, as well as children playing in sand traps, on the putting greens or on other areas of the course. All golfers
must check in with the Pro Shop prior to play. Please also remember that pet owners must dispose of all pet waste, must keep pets on
leashes and must not use course water coolers or trash cans for pet use. Instances of trespassing could be reported to the North
Charleston Police Department and will be dealt with accordingly. The Club Board has posted several notices of the Golf Course
prohibited actions, but continues to have reported sightings of violations. We are asking all members to report these sightings to the
pro shop so action can be taken. If unauthorized entry on the golf course continues, it could lead to a fine. We really do not want to
resort to fines and other actions but we do insist the community remain secure, prevent costly damage to the course and prevent
someone from being seriously injured and will do what is necessary.
The Club and POA remind everyone that all Personal Golf Carts must have POA identification and be registered with the POA to be
driven inside the gate of Coosaw Creek Country Club. See the Coosaw Creek Property Owners’ Association Rules and Regulations
(Rev. Sept 1, 2012) Below:
6. PRIVATE GOLF CARTS: There shall be no operating of a golf cart on the streets without a valid state driver's license and a special
use permit issued by the C.C.O.A. (POA). This permit is conditioned on the owner's quiet and safe use of the vehicle on the property.
Under South Carolina Motor Vehicle Law, only drivers with valid state driver's licenses are allowed to operate golf carts. Any violation
of this condition will result in a revocation of the special use permit. Local laws and regulations must be obeyed. (Section 3.15 and 3.18)
(Revised 9/1/12)
Violations for not following the above regulations can result in being ticketed by the police, plus other penalties by the C.C.O.A. (POA)
and the Club. Personal Carts must always conform to the laws of South Carolina when driven in the community. It is also important to
note the use of Personal Carts on the Cart Paths after hours is a Security Concern that we ask everyone to report to the police
department.
We ask everyone to please observe both the C.C.O.A and the Club Rules and report anyone you see violating the rules. Please call the
Club: 676-9000 ext 204, POA: 676-9000 ext 223/224 during hours or Police: 745-1015 after 7:00 PM.
We sincerely appreciate you assistance and cooperation,

POOL ACCESS CARDS NOW AVAILABLE
The Club has now completed the project of providing a state-of-the-art
security/access system for the pool area. The project included replacement of the
three old dilapidated wood gates with sturdy attractive aluminum gates, electronic
access control boxes and proximity card readers. The new system will provide the
club with:
- A device to allow only dues-paying members access to the pool.
- Adequate security to ensure compliance with DHEC requirements.
- The ability to limit access to younger children as required by insurance
underwriters.
- Report generating information to track pool usage.
Currently the two gates leading from the playground to the pool and from the
clubhouse to the pool are fully operational. To gain entry to the pool through these
two gates members must be in possession of a proximity card. The main gate to the
pool is currently on a timer which is set to disengage the security system and allow
entry during a specific time. This will remain in effect until the new proximity cards
are distributed at which time the main gate will also be set to only open with the use
of a card. Exiting the pool only requires the patron to press an “exit” button
located at all three gates. This disengages the gate for a short period of time to allow
exiting.
Members in good standing may NOW pick up their proximity cards at the
Administrative Office. Hours for distribution are Monday through Friday 9 am to 4
pm. Each family will be issued ONE proximity card. This card will be
Member-specific. Cards are not to be shared with others.
