Balancing Developments & Sustainability
WATER SITUATION IN
ISKANDAR
IN ORDER TO PROMOTE FOR INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE INFRA AND
UTILITIES AS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES:
Iskandar Will Ensure A Reliable Source Of High Quality Water And Preserve
Existing Water Catchment Areas That Serve Iskandar
Water Resources
Syarikat Air Johor Holdings Berhad (SAJH) is responsible for the
supply and distribution of treated water
There are six treatment plants, which can supply 858 million liters of
treated water per day to consumers in ISKANDAR
Raw water is sourced from three rivers namely
Sungai Layang,
Sungai Johor and
Sungai Pulai.
11
WATER SOLUTION FOR
ISKANDAR
ISKANDAR will utilize sustainable use of water resources i.e. implementing
measures for more efficient use of water and by encouraging water recycling
and rainwater harvesting
ISKANDAR will adopt an
integrated water management
system : water supply and use will
be viewed as an integrated cycle.
Two sources of water:
Conservation of underground
water sources, rivers, water
catchment areas, lakes and
rainwater; and
Harvest water from rain and
recycle for suitable purposes.

12
DRAINAGE SYSTEM
ISKANDAR will advocate sustainable drainage systems which will offer more
cost-effective solutions that are easy to manage, attractive and resilient to use.
Sustainable drainage systems are currently used in both urban
and rural areas based on ‘The Manual Saliran Mesra Alam’ or
MASMA ( by Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS)). The
manual contains detailed guide to sustainable drainage.
Concept of MASMA includes
but not limited to:
Swales are used
instead of lined
drains
Un-line/earth drains to allow
water permeability and slow
water velocity
Build retention ponds to
ensure net zero discharge of
additional water after
development.
13
WATER-RELATED
DEVELOPMENT
ISKANDAR is committed to utilize water within existing coastal and rivers not
only for water consumption but also as a means of transportation, for tourism ,
recreation and development
The Straits of Johor divides
Iskandar with Singapore.
Rivers and coastal areas are the
natural assets for Iskandar.
10 rivers run through the region, 5
being the most important are
• Sg Johor
• Sg Layang
• Sg Tebrau
• Sg Skudai
• Sg Pulai

WATER-RELATED
DEVELOPMENT
ISKANDAR is committed to ensure all rivers are clean by embarking on an
Integrated River Basin Management that coordinates, conserves and manages
development of water within a river basin
Goals:
To have Clean, Living
and Vibrant River
To ensure the quality of
water is cleaner than

WATER
TRANSPORTATION
ISKANDAR is committed
to utilize water not only for water consumption but also
as a means of transportation, for tourism, recreation and development
• Iskandar Malaysia is looking
at opportunity of promoting
river taxi as a means of
transportation.
16
TOURISM
• Water activities asATTRACTIONS
well as
waterfront parks and
development have emerged
as some of the key attractions
to Iskandar.
Danga Bay
• Waterfront destinations:
Danga Bay, Pantai Lido and
Stulang.
• Waterfront sports and
activities: Danga Bay
International Games.
• Coastal Conservation:
RAMSAR Mangrove Park.

RECREATIONAL
ISKANDAR is committed to manage water run off by constructing more retention
pond which also act as recreational park
• Using MASMA as guidelines
for retention areas, many
ponds are created for
drainage purposes as well as
for recreation activities.

18
NEW TOWNSHIP
• These ponds have become natural features to many new townships.
Other than providing visual settings to developments, they act as
recreational sites for local residents as well as providing water base
activities and lifestyle.
Retention ponds as feature to
development:
Glenmarie Cove,
Selangor
19
WATER AND LAKE-FRONT
DEVELOPMENT
• Land located near the coast and rivers
are being seen as potential locations for
waterfront developments. Examples of
developments being implemented:
The Puteri Harbour development would
have its marina complete with a clubhouse
and promenade. Puteri is ready to receive
its first boats in August 2008.

PROTECTION OF THE
NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
ISKANDAR is to protect its natural resources and environment
• Whilst coastal and riverside developments are
encouraged, Iskandar considers it crucial that such
developments do not bring a negative impact on
the natural environment.
• Iskandar is considering the preparation of a
Shoreline Management Plan to guide
developments along the Iskandar Malaysia’s
coastline
• Steer developments away from areas of high
conservation value and Environmentally
Sensitive Areas (ESAs) such as the RAMSAR
sites, and mangrove forests.
• Promote sustainable aquaculture activities
