Use a short cable to connect the Mic to Input Number 1 Select MIC on the input MIC –LINE switch Connect the headphones and camera cable to the output of the mixer. •

Connect the mixer OUT to the LINE input of the Camera. Select LINE on the mixer MIC-­‐LINE switch. Use the longest cable as it lets you move away from the camera closer to the source of sound. Connect the Beyer headphones to the mixer, these provide the best quality for monitoring sound. Camera and mixer headphone monitoring Use the lightweight headphones for audio monitoring on the camera. The headphone socket for the PMW-­‐300 is at the back of the handle. Use the good Beyer headphones for mixer audio monitoring. But remember mixer headphones will not monitor audio playback from the camera. Switch to LINE input Camera audio inputs, 3 pin AUDIO IN socket (Check the details for the camera you are using) •

There will be a 3 pin input socket and a MIC-­‐LINE switch Be sure to select LINE to match the LINE output of the mixer Use input CH 1 on the camera The VU meter (Volume Units meter) The level for voice should average up to 0 VU, Do not exceeded +3 or you will over load the mixer and distort the sound. This equates to -­‐18dB in the digital camera. Switch on the Power. Set the MASTER level dial to “0” you can calibrate it exactly later. Turn up the MIC level to around 7. Turn up the headphone volume to around the middle, you should be able to hear the microphone working, and set the headphones to a suitable listening volume. Use the grey Beyer headphones for quality sound monitoring. Select L+R for headphone monitoring. Speak into the microphone in a normal voice and set the MIC level so your voice peaks at 0VU on the meter. Set the levels for average loudness spoken word and listen carefully to check the sound quality. Check the microphone and boom pole for rattles and handling noise, wrap the microphone cable around the boom pole so it won’t rattle or tangle. Check the cable from the mixer into the camera, use input 1 in the camera. Check mixer output and camera input are both set to LINE level. Set-­‐up and test the sound system with the camera operator, each confirm the setup. Listen for quality sound in the camera and check the volume of the camera headphones. Check the mixer and the camera mic are recording on separate channels. Test the mixer battery with the battery test button and meter display, new batteries should last about 10 hours Next we will calibrate the camera and mixer with a test tone signal camera level settings. Turn down the microphone level, Switch on the 1Khz tone switch. Adjust the MASTER level to display exactly 0 VU on the meter. Check the long cable from the mixer LINE OUT to the camera INPUT 1 (CH-­‐1) Check the audio switch on the camera, make sure to select LINE on the MIC/LINE switch. Adjust the AUDIO LEVEL dial on the camera side to calibrate the level to -­‐18 on the display. On the Sony PMW-­‐300 camera: Press the Status button and scroll (Up or Down) to the view large audio meter in the viewfinder, as shown above. For convenience we can consider the “4 dots” to be a guide to -­‐18 as shown by the arrow. CH-­‐2 can be set to record “atmos” from the attached camera microphone. Set to EXT and adjust the AUDIO LEVEL as required. Check the camera instructions Channel 3 and 4 will record from the built in microphones on the camera. Test record the 1khz tone and play it back to check sound quality. Listen with the headphones on the camera. Other cameras may have a LCD display on the side. Calibrate the mixer tone to -­‐18 Set any spare Channels to record “atmos” from in camera microphones. Now that audio levels are tested and calibrated, do not adjust the MASTER level on the mixer, or the audio levels on the camera, you will just mess up the levels you calibrated.
