The Geauga County
Maple Festival was the idea of
Art Carlson, a local merchant
on Chardon Square. Carlson
wanted to increase awareness
of maple syrup production
as well as the price, which
at that time, was sold for 50
cents a gallon. When Carlson
told some friends about his
idea they started planning the
first Geauga County Maple
Festival.
The
Maple
Festival
was founded in 1926 in an
attempt to market Ohio
syrup in competition with
Vermont syrup. The Geauga
County News announced that
Chardon was “Going to treat
the general public to a good
old fashioned maple sugar
eat.” They featured free dishes
of maple syrup, a sugar camp,
tapped trees, and ox team
gathering sap, and a maple
products display. Festival
Planners expected 5,000
vistors and worried over the
April ice storm. Over 15,000
people attended, and now the
festival is an annual tradition.
The Geauga County
Maple Festival hosts the
largest maple contest in the
state of Ohio.

The Stor y of The Hills
from the beginning . .
By Vicki Wilson, Director of Marketing – The Hills
It was over fifty years ago that George Ohman, Sr.
and his wife Joan met with very unexpected and tragic
news. Joyfully expecting their second son Andy, they
were visiting their doctor for a check-up, accompanied
by George’s brother Bill. Bill had a check-up scheduled
with the same doctor. Unfortunately, Bill received the
devastating diagnosis of multiple sclerosis that day. Bill
soon went to live with George Sr. and Joan. As with
many great businesses and ideas, invention was born
of necessity.
Through an array of circumstances, and the events
transpiring in the Ohman family’s life, a deep calling
began to foster in their hearts and minds. Joan Ohman
expressed it by saying, “The Lord warmed our hearts.
He lit a fire. There has to be a real fire in your heart
to do something.” That “something” was a calling to
serve others who would be entrusted to them for their
healthcare needs.
George and Joan wanted to provide more than
healthcare to the elderly in their care. They understood
that the healthcare must be accompanied by love,
respect and compassion. Further, they envisioned
creating a real home, one tastefully decorated, clean
and welcoming. Joan eloquently said, “I have always
thought I would never want to take a loved one to a
place where I myself would not live, or a place that I
would not love for my parents.”
In the beginning, George was often asked, “What do
you know about nursing homes?” He would respond
that he knows how people deserve to be treated. He
believes people deserve the very best that he and his
family can give. These sentiments are mirrored in the
family’s unyielding belief that each life has value and
meaning.
In 1964, George and Joan purchased a
simple, ranch-style home on top of a hill covered
in holly bushes, with a gorgeous view of the East
Branch Reservoir and Grandview Country Club in
Middlefield. That was the beginning of Holly Hill,
the first nursing home. They and their first three
children lived in that house, in the converted
garage, and cared for Uncle Bill and the other
residents entrusted to their care. This ninebed facility on Old State Road in Middlefield
expanded to a lovely property on Fairmount Road
in Newbury. Partner Don Gray, a longtime friend
George had met through his church, joined the
COUNTRY SAVINGS MAGAZINE ISSUE 2 – 2016
Ohmans in their venture
in 1971. Over time, they
nurtured a community
of family-owned and managed skilled nursing facilities
in Geauga County: Holly Hill Health Care Residence
in Newbury, Briar Hill Health Care Residence in
Middlefield, and Blossom Hill Health Care Residence in
Huntsburg.
With a powerful sense of empathy and earnest
Christian values, the tradition of compassionate care
begun by George and Joan is carried forward by the
family’s second and third generations. Remarkably, the
three children that shared the garage apartment with
their parents on Old State Road, George Jr., Anderson
and Nancy, are now the owners and Administrators of
the three skilled nursing facilities. Daughter Amy assists
in the leadership of Holly Hill. The third generation,
comprised of Christian, Joshua, Kurt and many other
grandchildren, have joined their family in the business.
The Ohmans are dedicated to what they believe
is their mission, a belief that is instilled in their family
members and the dedicated staff in their employ.
“We are called to serve those who are entrusted to
us.” They believe in doing business guided by four
essential principles ~ The Supremacy of Love, Striving
for Excellence, Creating a Home and the Celebration
of Life.
In harmony with Joan Ohman’s sentiments from
the beginning, The Hills offers what I most want for
my family. My family deserves a “home”, where they
are loved, respected, accepted and safe. That, coupled
with exemplary healthcare, is what everyone deserves.
