GEMS
is a one-day learning conference aimed to help middle-school girls explore careers in math and science.
Hundreds of girls gather at the University of South Alabama and attend fun hands-on workshops to engage themselves in
various fields of science, engineering, and medicine. Girls who spend a day at the GEMS Conference leave with:
 Increased interest in mathematics and science through positive hands-on experiences!
 Awareness of career opportunities for women in math and science related fields!
 Mentorship from female role-models with technical careers!
GEMS Girls pick their favorite math and science subjects, then we assigned them to workshops specially designed to
showcase how much fun it is to work in associated fields. Workshops are directed by professionals and students and
include activities such as making perfume with aromatic hydrocarbons, diagnosing simulated patients using specialty
medical equipment, hunting for gems and minerals to make jewelry, conducting environmental testing…and many many
more! Each workshop includes time for GEMS Girls to learn about technical careers and network with professionals and
students in various fields.
