YOUR CONTRIBUTION COUNTS
CHANGING LIVES
DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS
Our students become leading members of communities returning the positive influence they received as members of the
Jenks Trojan Pride Marching Band. Our music programs give students experience and practice in life skills that reach far
beyond musical notes and instruments. Participation in the Jenks Trojan Marching Band requires:
DISCIPLINE
The discipline students experience and practice in band is a foundation for later
in college, in the workplace and in life. Teaching moments like long rehearsals,
memorized drills and music, the philosophy that ‘early is on time; on time is late’,
build into a student’s character.
TEAMWORK
What greater opportunity to learn teamwork than with over 236 fellow team
members! Every student in the marching band must contribute, work hard, and
inspire each other to perform a show with excellence. The students learn that
conflicts and personal differences must be set aside if they are to be successful.
SACRIFICE
Our band students spend countless hours working together. They give up a month of
their summer to practice and train. They are at school early in the mornings and late
in the evenings. They understand what it is like to sacrifice their free time in order to
find personal satisfaction and success for their band.
GIVING BACK TO OKLAHOMA
Our students donate their time and talents to Oklahoma communities through countless hours of volunteer service. Band
members helped children at risk, participated in the walk to end Alzheimer’s, gave free music lessons, played at grand
openings and special events.
“Thanks again
Jenks Band and
Color Guard for coming to
work with New Hope’s
children enduring
parental incarceration
last month!
We had so much fun
and truly appreciate you”!
New Hope Oklahoma.
Your participation in the Jenks Trojan Pride Marching Band sponsorship program helps the students by reducing their
personal expenses and helps support the needs of a growing band program. This is especially important in the coming
year as we face the challenges of funding our marching band trip to the 2016 Tournament of Roses® Parade.
THE 2016 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES® PARADE
It’s Official - the Jenks Trojan Pride Marching Band has been selected to perform in
the 2016 Tournament of Roses® Parade in Pasadena, California!
January 1, 2016 will be the 127th Rose Parade, one of our nations’ most iconic New Year traditions
and one of the highest honors a high school marching band can receive. Well over 50 musical
groups compete for as few as 12 openings every year. Selection includes an extensive application
process that was started a year ago. Videos, pictures, and national letters of recommendation are
required for consideration.
The Rose Parade now draws a live audience along the parade route
of one million people, 39 million Americans watching on television and
hundreds of millions more watching in 220 countries around the world.
“This event began as a promotional effort by Pasadena’s distinguished Valley Hunt Club. In the winter of 1890,
the club members brainstormed ways to promote the “Mediterranean of the West.” They invited their former
East Coast neighbors to a mid-winter holiday, where they could watch games such as chariot races, jousting,
foot races, polo and tug-of-war under the warm California sun. The abundance of fresh flowers, even in the
midst of winter, prompted the club to add another showcase for Pasadena’s charm: a parade would precede
the competition, where entrants would decorate their carriages with hundreds of blooms. The Tournament of
Roses was born.
During the next few years, the festival expanded to include marching
bands and motorized floats. The games on the town lot (which was
re-named Tournament Park in 1900) included ostrich races, bronco
busting demonstrations and a race between a camel and an
elephant (the elephant won). Reviewing stands were built along the
Parade route, and Eastern newspapers began to take notice of the
event. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed
to take charge of the festival, which had grown too large for the
Valley Hunt Club to handle.
The Tournament of Roses has come a long way since its early days.
The Rose Parade’s elaborate floats now feature high-tech computerized
animation and exotic natural materials from around the world. Although
a few floats are still built exclusively by volunteers from their sponsoring
communities, most are built by professional float building companies and take nearly
a year to construct. The year-long effort pays off on New Year’s morning, when millions of viewers around the
world enjoy the Rose Parade.” www.tournamentofroses.com
“A Tradition of Excellence with a Vision for Tomorrow”
The Jenks instrumental music department and the Jenks Trojan Pride has a long tradition of excellence. The
Trojan Pride Marching Band is the most visible part of the music program. It combines music, the Color Guard,
the Front Ensemble and special effects to create stunning musical performances. JENKS TROJAN PRIDE MARCHING BAND • JAZZ BANDS • ORCHESTRAS
