BELGIUM:
THE SMALL COUNTRY
THAT IS OPEN TO THE WORLD
By Etienne Bours
Now, more than ever, Belgium – despite its small size – is alive with sound,
song and music from every horizon. It’s as if the world’s cultures enjoy
meeting at this northern crossroads, readily hopping across political borders
to transform the landscape into the home of music without frontiers.
This is not a recent phenomenon. Belgium is not interested in music from
different cultures simply because it's fashionable or politically correct to be
open to multiculturalism. The country has, for a long time, been like a sponge,
eagerly absorbing assorted forms of expression with an enthusiasm,
so typical of those who take the time to share.
Nowadays, the result of all these years of openness is tangible
and can be split into a few major trends.
Local traditions
The country has not forgotten its own traditions though. In the 1970s, as in many
other countries, a revival was in full swing and inquisitive musicians and singers
were snooping around into anything and everything that made each region’s older
generations tick. We were soon hearing instruments, repertoires, almost forgotten
languages and seeing dances we thought obsolete. Memory was reactivated.
From the North to the South, festivals sprang up, groups and singers suddenly broke
out of the sedate routine of the variety show style. Needless to say, these pioneers
of folk music have moved out of the spotlight somewhat. But the younger generation
of musicians have not forgotten them and the work continues. Particularly as the
revival generation has not completely disappeared. Many are still active, some in
production, others in broadcasting while others still continue to sing and perform.
Traditional instruments, such as the Flemish bagpipe, are still being produced for
musicians on the other side of the globe. A lot of music is still being played, danced,
sung or enthusiastically taught to others. And labels such as Fonti Musicali and Eufoda
have released imperative record collections of local traditions.
So the overall consensus in the early 21st century is a positive one.
There are still lots of bands able to pick up a violin, accordion, bagpipe or hurdygurdy and play the tunes and dances of yesteryear in a dynamic atmosphere rather
than a stuffy museum showcase. With Kadril, Göze, Embrun, Urban Trad, Naragonia,
Ishtar or Transpiradanza, Belgium’s traditional scene is alive, even kicking. Multiple
generations slide into place and there is always some place in the country where you
can hear an instrument that reminds you of the years gone by. We haven't forgotten
our regional vocalists who sang and still sing to us in our own dialects, from the late
Wannes Van de Velde to Julos Beaucarne. We still have our own wandering minstrels,
who are passionately dedicated to creatively moving this craft forward, from Laïs and
Kadril to Luc Pilartz and Trivelin… This is so true that each region has its own sound:
the sound of the common people, which is inevitably told in music.
Foreign traditions
Belgium has been breathing the rhythms of the world for ages. Long before the term
‘World Music’ was coined, our country echoed with the sounds of the songs and
dances from Turkey, Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain and Greece, North Africa, of course,
but also the Lebanon, Sardinia and beyond.
through their music, a comfort which helped them get through the rough patches.
Whenever a saz, tambura, mandolin or oud were heard at dusk, it was often in the
almost anonymous confines of someone’s back kitchen or at a small community
gathering. But little by little, we began noticing that each neighbourhood prided itself
on its very own little immigrant cultural centre, or a meeting hall run by Greeks,
Spaniards or Moroccans.
Gradually, a multicultural society grew based on the awareness that all these cultural
riches had to learn to coexist. Organizations were created providing opportunities and
allowing these forms of expression to grow and spread. Belgian musicians quickly
understood that they could learn a lot by interacting with this other music. Jazz, rock,
traditional music… whatever; musicians began exchanging ideas, collaborating and
experimenting. But also, on simpler terms, it meant letting the music that lives here
express itself openly. Indeed, some have become so well-known that they record for
the most prestigious labels and travel the world to share their know-how. We could
mention N’Faly Kouyate, Abdelli, Zap Mama, Think of One, Mousta Largo, Mamady
Keïta, Malick Pathé Sow… to name but a few. We are, in effect, largely talking about
know-how. The world’s traditions come to Belgium to blossom, at the same time
teaching us how the feelings of their music, songs and repertoires are translated. And
many others follow, sometimes discretely but always sincerely. They include, notably,
Marlène Dorcena, Imitari, Manou Gallo, Obereg, Ghalia Benali, Mahmoud Barkou,
Melike Tarhan, Cheiro de choro, Grafiti, Marwan Zoueini, Ialma. They originate from
Haiti, Central and North Africa, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, the Lebanon and Spain…
Not satisfied with just expressing themselves using their own codes, they willingly
hook up with Belgian musicians, occasionally or on a regular basis, for projects that
transcend differences and break down the boundaries between musical genres.
A good example of this is Olla Vogala, a group that blends traditional and classical
music, as well as jazz, teaming up with guests from every continent. Another example
is Aka Moon and their recent work with Black Machine, Maline Baba Sissoko's group.
World Traditions
The many immigrant communities living on our soil certainly didn't leave their
memories behind! Quite to the contrary, the memories were kept alive and expressed
Once a country’s windows are open, the wind can carry in tunes from anywhere, at
any time. Being steeped in a multi-cultural environment, our ears are well accustomed
to being open, so this music that comes from afar draws musicians and producers
towards new adventures. Like everywhere else in the world, the song of the mermaid
is plainly heard by those who dare to listen. And Belgians are no exception; they had

INTRODUCTION
the audacity and intelligence to play the role of talent scout or builders of global
projects. Some have been responsible for the world’s biggest festival network
(EFWMF), while others have managed to produce the Gypsies of Taraf de Haïdouks,
the Tartit Touaregs, the Gangbé Brass Band or the singing of Habib Koité and bring it
to the five continents.
Production, promotion and management are professions in which these Belgians,
thrilled by the prospect of discovery, seem to excel. They reach out to people,
build projects and produce records, so extending the life of musical and personal
adventures, yet always managing to keep that passionate and affable appetite that
is so typical of Belgium. Crammed Discs, the home of Komono N°1, Bebel Gilberto,
Cibelle, Balkan Beat Box, Think of One, Taraf De Haidouks and Koçani Orkestar,
has grown into a globally respected highly adventurous label. Crammed received
the Womex Award 2004 and the Womex Top Label Award 2009.
Fonti Musicali continues to offer Mamady Keïta the best working conditions so
that he can dig his roots even deeper into his native African soil. The label is
also the main record keeper of traditional Congolese music.
Contre-Jour travels the globe with Habib Koité, Afel Bocoum, Dobet Gnahoré and
many other talented artists. Many, many others also emanate the same conviction.
Musicians from every musical horizon are approaching things in the same way,
meeting the guardians of traditions near and far. This leads to innovative music, where
traditional elements are blended into an original recipe, which also often borrows from
jazz or rock. The group Think of One is only one interesting example; its musicians
regularly work with Brazilian, Moroccan and even Inuit artists. Mec Yek does equally
amazing stuff with gypsy vocalists.
There’s no room for boredom in Belgium. Between singers such as Paul Rans
or Tom Theuns and the accordionists Didier Laloy or Wim Claeys, the word juggler
Julos Beaucarne and the musical acrobats Olla Vogala, the Walloon blues of Elmore
D. and the vocal rapture of Galicia’s Ialma, the popular violin of Luc Pilartz, Wouter
Vandenabeele and the Irish reels of Kieran Fahy, the delicate vocals of Laïs, the
boldness of Aurelia, the global mix of Jaune Toujours and the surprising acoustic
compositions of DAAU/Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung… the musical
landscape of this tiny country is infinitely rich and disarmingly sincere.
Also when it comes to organizing concerts, size doesn’t matter! Clubs, venues and
festivals... Belgium offers them in all shapes and sizes, from comfy clubs to festivals
that can be counted among the best in the world. Don’t forget to check them out!
