e love riding $1 OK wUnderbikes as much as anyone,
and probably more than most. But all that bling can
spoil us. Feeling the need to pull our heads out of the
clouds (some might say out of our asses), we hunted down six
$2,500 full-suspension trail bikes, loaded them into the van,
and headed south from Pittsburgh to the Stokesville Lodge in
Harrisonburg, Virginia, to ride the rowdy trails and reconnect
with bikes that have price tags well below the cost of a new
motorcycle.
There are basic similarities with the six we chose: All have
hydro-formed aluminum frames, tapered forks and air rear
shocks. Not a single piece of carbon fiber anywhere-but lots
of wrs rims and saddles. Almost every bike needed wider bars,
and that is coming from a bunch of tight-woods riding Easterners. And not a single fork had stanchions over 32mm wide-the
Camber only had 30mm stanchions.
Nearly every bike had bars, stems and dropper posts
swapped out for personal preference and comfort. We tried stock
tires, but switched those when the wet, leafy trails demanded
more aggressive knobs. We'd consider this pretty par for the
course for most experienced riders setting up a new bike. As for
the dropper posts, that is just simple math: How many mountain
bikes would be improved by the installation of a dropper post?
All of them.
While there was some bellyaching before the trip, along the
lines of ruining a fall riding retreat with less than top-of-the-line
machinery, everyone stopped complaining from the first ride
onward. For the price, these bikes are a much better deal than
many two to four times the cost.

to stop and ask for advice on where to ride, or where to eat.

as well. Those looking for more down and dirty can check out tile SixPack Downhill series, or try slumming it at the brutal Tour de Burg, an

This is great news because the Massanutten trails are worth

conversational pace easy to maintain. The descents are an incredible hybrid of rocks and flow, rewarded with good lines and full
commitment.
The centerpiece of the system is the 2,000 Hour Trail, named for
the amount of labor used to make it. Approximately a mile long,
this is easily one of the top ten trails in the country. All that labor

So how's all this understated technology actually ride? The Horst-
~
link style suspension pedals amazingly well for something with this
much travel and a downhill-specific shock. Long climbs had me
twisting up the compression damping, and seriously technical climbs
are probably going to result in some walking, as the slack head angle
and long travel suspension combine to make things less than ideal
for scrambling up the steep stuff. But for self-shuttling with fireroad
access and more mellow grades, this gets an A+.
Going down is much the same, with the ride being most rewarding
when speeds are high and moves are big. The suspension is impressively bottomless, with a smooth progression from a supple beginning
stroke, a non-wallowing middle, to a not-harsh end stroke.
After switching to the slackest setting, the 601 proved itself more
than enough bike for my bike park ability. Plenty of wheelbase (47.3'')
to keep things in check and very forgiving suspension. A dual crown
fork is an option, and something I would look into for more regular park
use, the 36 is an awesome fork, but no replacement for a true DH fork
in the park. The upcoming 601 Mk3 will have additional gussets and
built in bumpers for better dual-crown fork compatibility, along with a
redesigned downtube shock mount for a flatter leverage rate.
As a trail bike I was a little less happy, as all that travel felt like overkill
most places. Most of our local gnar is in short bursts, rather than the
sustained beat-down areas with more elevation are able to dish out.
