uying your dream home or selling your property for a
new investment can be a celebratory time in your life. It’s
important to make sure you have the proper representation
to make your goals a reality.
Rick Rapp of Travers Miran Realty is your best choice to
represent you in all your real estate needs. Rick Rapp is a
licensed Real Estate broker who has been in the business for
many years. He recently opened a new convenient location
for Travers Miran Realty at the Shoppes of Parkland, 5923 W.
Hillsboro Blvd., Parkland FL 33067 (in the BJ’s shopping plaza).
The goal of his company is to offer residents a true
boutique agency with actual client care and satisfaction.
Travers Miran Realty has joined with Supreme Lending and
Assure America Title to offer their clients a full Real Estate
experience from start to finish. “In the days of evolving technology, customer service has
taken a backseat in the real estate arena, TMR intends to
bring that “old school” care back to our clients while also using
technological marketing and advertising to bring sellers top
dollar and immense local and national advertising,” said Rapp.
“Our mission of ‘no lock boxes ever’ is intended to serve
our clientele in the best regard possible. While many firms
leave a key for agents and wait for the home to sell, TMR
agents always accompany on all showings and actually SELL
their listings by educating prospects on property, location,
and all positive aspects of the home. Our motto is “real estate
done right” and we work tirelessly each and every day to
provide that to our customers,”
added Rapp.
Rapp personally works
with each of his clients and
utilizes various means to
market their properties to
a wide range of potential
buyers.
“By advertising in new and

dollar for our sellers. By nixing the ‘cookie cutter’ marketing
that so many local agents use, we stand out, which in
turn, makes our clients and inventory stand out from their
competition,” said Rapp. “Our marketing has been proven
time and time again. We have seen increases of 18% over the
competitions’ sales pricing by following and implementing
these marketing techniques. While others place on the MLS
and wait for the phone to ring, Rick sells... and for more!”
Now is the time to sell, says Rick!
“Another bubble is among us. With an onslaught of
foreign money flooding the market with cash purchases,
appreciation is rising at an alarming rate. It’s a great time to
sell again, but buyers in a lower bracket are having a tough
time acquiring homes. We help these buyers by offering true
market research and insight. Education is vital in real estate
as the market is constantly fluctuating, by jumping to offer
without due diligence you may find yourself in an upside
down situation. Our agents are here to protect you and your
investment!” said Rick.

elcome to Spring! It’s a great time of year in the City of
Parkland. I want to extend a warm welcome to newly
elected City Commissioners Christine Hunschofsky and Stacy
Kagan. Both have a tremendous amount of energy and love for
the City, and I look forward to working with you. Each of the
members of the City Commission brings a unique perspective
to the board and each has and will work hard for the benefit
of our City residents. I look forward to working with the new
Commission and helping to continue in our efforts to make
Parkland the best small City in the State. I would be remiss
if I did not thank Commissioners Rosenof and Weissman for
helping to pick up the slack while we had been shorthanded
for the last few months until a full Commission could be sworn
in. Additionally, thank you to our great City employees for
everything they do. They make our jobs as elected officials
much easier. They make us look good! We are fast approaching our strategic planning sessions. We
do this each year to set budget and policy priorities. As we have
some “new Commission members”, we will this year have full
blown strategic planning sessions to update our priorities and
work flow. We appreciate all the public input and ideas we
gather throughout the year. We use the City survey responses
and the public’s input to come up with plans and ideas. We
try to make the difficult decisions and balance the “wants”
and “needs” of the City as we formulate budgets and policy
initiative well into the future. While we are happy and gratified
that a large percentage of our residents are extremely satisfied
with the services of the City, we are constantly looking to
improve in all areas. These strategic planning sessions over the
years have led to improvements and events that continue to
make Parkland great.
Parkland’s 50th birthday celebration kicked off last month
in style with our Jersey Boys Tribute show. There are other
birthday events in April, including our 50th anniversary
carnival and our City-wide Concert featuring the Little River
Band. I encourage all residents to check the City website often
to keep up to date on upcoming City events. Many of these
events have been sponsored by private entities so it keeps the
costs to the taxpayer to a minimum. I hope you enjoy them as
there truly is something for everyone!
As always, I value your questions or comments. Reach out and
“friend me” if you want to follow me on Facebook, or look me
up on Twitter (www.twitter.com/michaeludine) if you want
to follow my updates. As always, if you have any questions or
concerns, please email me at [email protected].

Bockhold was instrumental in much of the City’s history. He moved to

I
Why I Relay
By Nancy Collot
relay for many reasons. First and
foremost, I relay so that I can do
as much as possible to mitigate the
effects of this insidious disease for
others. I relay so we can get closer
to finding a cure. I relay to give
back to my friends and family for
their support and love while I was
undergoing treatment- not once, but
twice for TWO DIFFERENT cancers. I
relay so fewer and fewer people will have to hear the diagnosis
“You have cancer”. I relay in order to expand the World of
Hope for MORE BIRTHDAYS. I relay because I am inspired
by my fellow committee and team members: their dedication,
their drive, their tireless efforts to help rid the world of cancer.
By Wendy Zipes Hunter
I
t arrived in the form of an email from a good friend inviting
me to attend a Relay For Life meeting. At the time, I had
never heard of Relay For Life, but I was intrigued and we
went. I was immediately engaged and signed on to be the
event co-chair of the 2009 Parkland Relay For Life. That was
three Relay’s ago.
Initially, Relay became a life preserver for me. Something
I could grab hold of, it was a tangible way for me to wrap
my arms around my mother’s recent death and turn the
devastating loss into something positive. I was completely lost
without her.
The original email invitation served as an impetus for me
to get involved in my community and wound up helping me
re-emerge back into life. I had pushed everyone away and
spiraled into a very lonely black hole. Relay became a way
for me to re-connect with my community, to find commonality
with my family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, people I do
business with and people my children know from school who
live in our small town. We all share this unfortunate common
bond of loving or losing someone close to us because of cancer.
Why do I Relay? I relay to honor my mother. I relay for
my children so they can be an active part in always keeping
their beloved grandmother’s memory alive. My Mom,
“Mimi,” loved me and my family so fully, unconditionally
and wholeheartedly. We relay to forever keep her alive in our
hearts and minds.
There isn’t only one reason why I relay, and through the
years, I have found several more– to celebrate so many friends
and loved one’s survivals, to encourage several friends and
loved ones in their own battles with the disease, and to always
remember my mom and all of the loved ones lost to our family
and friends.
I am thankful to Relay for the genuine friendships I’ve
forged and fostered through our common commitment to
finding a cure– hopefully in our children’s lifetimes. I hope
anyone reading my reasons for relaying will find comfort in
knowing they are not alone and that being involved in Relay is
a healthy, positive way to make a difference, not only in your
own life, but in the lives of everyone involved.

Memorial Run Draws
Community Support

he first annual Joseph Schiro Memorial Run brought
together many residents for a day of giving.
The Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent
Association and Church by the Glades hosted the memorial
run to raise money for the family of Coral Springs soldier
Joseph Schiro, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on
October 6, 2012. The 5K, 10K, and half marathon benefitted a
trust set up for the Schiro children.
“Our event for the Schiro family was a great success. We
had over 200 runners and walkers who came out for the event.
We raised $4,800 for the kids trust fund and are definitely
going to make this an annual event,” said Talia J. Hunter,
Vice President for the Coral Springs Professional Firefighter
Benevolent Association.
“We feel that it is important for the Benevolent to be
supportive of the families in our community who are in need
of assistance. When we have a situation like the one with the
Schiro family, a family who has lost so much, we felt that
stars, Iraq Campaign medal with two stars, and several others. Since Joseph was such an athlete, the local firefighters found
it fitting to hold a memorial run in his memory.
“In high school, he participated in JV and Varsity
sports, and as an adult he was a proud member of the US
Army. We felt that an event like a memorial run would
be the best way to honor his memory,” said Talia.
In future years, the goal is
to set up a scholarship in
his name.

we had a responsibility to support that family in any way
possible,” added Hunter.
Joseph was a 27-year old Coral Springs native who was not
only an athlete but a Mensa alum. He had three small children,
the youngest just 8 months old and the oldest 4 years. He served
in several frontline tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Joseph was
a Green Beret and held numerous certifications including
his most recent of Special Forces Warrant Officer. His many

They say it takes a village to

Coral Springs 8th annual Women’s Wellness 5K Run/Walk and
the City of Coral Springs Half Marathon. The races are part of a list
of signature events to mark the City’s 50th anniversary. Both races
and paved course through the City of Coral Springs. Vendors,
including a Broward Health informational booth on the Lisa
Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, an Our Town News booth, a photo
booth and much more were also available throughout the day.
Our Town News was also a sponsor of the event.
“I’ve been working in race management for over 13 years but
this is the first time I’ve felt such a connection to a cause. The
Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund has saved so many womens’
lives and Lisa Boccard is amazing. The fact that she works so
hard to save other women as she fights breast cancer to save her
own life is inspirational. I look forward to working together for
many more years,” said Kelle Burke of In The Zone Event and
Sports Management and Race Director for the runs.
Lisa Boccard, along with her brother and Coral Springs
Mayor Vincent Boccard, were overjoyed with the turnout from
the community and beyond.
“It was incredible seeing so many people coming out
to support this event. I am especially excited about having
the City of Coral Springs join this event by hosting the Half
Marathon. It was truly a community event. In addition
to local support, we had runners from out of the state,
and even one from out of
the
country
(Ireland), who
participated in the
Half Marathon,”
said Lisa. “It was

North Lauderdale for many years, this restaurant became very
popular among the local crowd but also gained notoriety with
people who hailed from the Midwest.
Besides having the greatest wings around, a popular
specialty is their Pork Tenderloin Sandwich. If you are from the
midwest, then you are very familiar with this huge sandwich
which consists of breaded pork tenderloins made fresh on the
premises, onions, lettuce and tomato topped with a special
sauce. Midwesterners go crazy for it as well as anyone else
once they are introduced to it. This delicious meal is surely
to be the only one like it found in South Florida. Other
midwestern favorites served are Spaghetti topped with
Midwestern Chili, the Italian Beef Sandwich popular in
Chicago and the Philly Cheesesteak.
Recipes for their famous Wings, Burgers and Ribs have
been used since the first day their doors opened, back in 1980.
Through the years, new items have been added to the menu
providing a wide variety of options for the whole family.
From wings and homemade chicken thumbs to homemade
soups, they have all of the best food to satisfy any appetite.
A lighter fare is also offered as well. All menu items are

t seemed like everybody in town came to celebrate the
ribbon cutting at the Grand Opening of the Tampa Bay
Brewery Tap House in Coral Springs! The word was already
out that the local area had recently been blessed with a micro
brewery pouring the best beers you can find in Florida. They
came for the beer of course but also to raise money for Make-AWish. Individually numbered Tampa Bay Brewery Mugs were
auctioned off and Kathryn Burkhart captured #001 for $300 to
Make-A-Wish. Her husband Mike was not going to be left out
and added another $110 for Mug #019. Several thousand was
raised all together – it’ll be a higher number but you can still
get your own mug for a good cause (like having a special glass
to drink the best beer around from).
Hundreds of guests attended the recent ribbon cutting event
for Tampa Bay Brewery in Coral Springs. Coral Springs Mayor
Vincent Boccard, along with Tampa Bay Brewery staff and
local residents cut the ribbon (see a bunch of pictures on our
About Town page). A live radio broadcast started the night off
and shortly before the official ribbon cutting the hosts of the
program stumbled out with big smiles on their faces.

where you can view your favorite team on one of many flat

“What Are Dental Implants And How Are They Used To Replace
Missing Teeth With Crowns?” Part2
Frequently Asked Questions
Are implants always successful?
Modern implant techniques have been in use since 1965
when Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark placed the first
titanium implant in Sweden. Improvements in procedures and
materials have given implants a very high success rate which
is now over 95%. Implants are an accepted treatment by the
American Dental Association.
Is everyone a candidate for implant treatment?
In general, anyone healthy enough to undergo routine tooth
extraction or oral surgery is able to receive an implant. There
are some health conditions that warrant special consideration.
Age is only a factor for teenagers. If there is insufficient bone,
there are techniques to graft additional bone.
Will others know I have dental implants?
Today’s implant treatment enables you to have your new
teeth look, feel and function like your own. Even though others
will be unaware you have dental implants, many patients are so
pleased they tell everyone they know! Dental implants offer some
of the finest restorative results possible in modern dentistry.

How long does complete treatment take?
Depending on the type of implant and replacement teeth
selected, the total time can be as little as a few weeks to several
months. Sometimes if a tooth has to be extracted, the implant
can be placed at the same time. If adding bone for the implant
is necessary, further time may be needed.
Is there pain or discomfort?
Many patients report implant surgery less troublesome
than having teeth removed. With modern anesthesia and
close attention to post operative care you can expect minimal
discomfort.
Will I need to be hospitalized?
The vast majority of implant procedures are performed in
the dental office with local anesthesia. Hospitalization or use
of a Surgi Center may be necessary for very complex surgical
procedures or general health reasons.
For my front teeth, will I be without replacement teeth at any
time?
Usually you will have temporary teeth on the same day
the implant is placed. At most it may take a day or so for the
temporary teeth to be made.
How much does implant treatment cost?
The cost of implant treatment depends upon the number
of implants placed and the type of replacement teeth needed.
More complex treatment, such as bone grafting, will add to
the cost. Implants are cost effective when taking into account
the functioning life of the implant. The improvement in your
self confidence, comfort, eating habits and appearance will
make dental implant treatment one of the best investments
you’ve ever made!
Are implant supported teeth as strong as my natural teeth?
Yes. Research shows that in many cases implants actually
have a stronger attachment to bone than natural teeth. Dental
implants will never decay, but you still have to clean them to
keep the gums healthy.

Midas Helps You Protect Your Investment
B
By Nicol Jenkins, Editor
esides a home, your vehicle is probably the single largest
investment you’ll ever make. Proper maintenance can help
keep your vehicle safe and reliable, avoid roadside breakdowns,
prevent large unexpected bills, and improve fuel efficiency. Unlike repairs resulting from a roadside breakdown,
preventive maintenance can be scheduled at your convenience,
performed by mechanics you know and trust, and priced and
budgeted for in advance.
Midas Complete Auto Service and Tires gives you a
maintenance schedule specific to your vehicle and helps you
keep up with all the recommended services, including regular
oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, fluid changes and
general vehicle inspections.
While there are many decent auto maintenance operations
in the local area, there are only a handful with a nationwide
network of locations like Midas Complete Auto Service and
Tires. All of the work done for you at Midas comes with a
warrantee that will be honored by hundreds of locations and
backed by an international company. No matter where your
car travels from coast to coast or Canada, you can get help if
anything goes wrong. You can also get factory recommended
maintenance service at a considerable savings over what you
would pay for most work done at a major car dealership shop.
With over 25 years of business experience, Bob Miller
purchased the local Coral Springs Midas outlet because of his

strong belief in the quality of their service.
“After being snow birds since 2004, my wife Jeanne and I
decided to make it permanent. We chose the great community
of Coral Springs and a strong brand in Midas, which has
been serving the area for more than 20 years,” said Miller. “In
addition to the strong reputation of Midas, I have a great staff
at the store that’s not only very competent but also cares about
the quality of the service they provide and the customers they
serve.” Manager Yoel Victores offers auto industry knowledge.
Lifelong resident of Coral Springs Ken Bergmann, a former
certified technician, is the service advisor.
Midas, which has over 50 years of experience, truly lives up
to its motto- Trust the Midas Touch! As a total car care provider,
Midas believes that auto care should be a hassle-free experience.
“We are your one stop auto maintenance and auto repair shop.
The secret to our success is providing reliable repair service for
customers at an affordable price,” said new owner Bob Miller.
They don’t rush you in and out the door! Their experienced
mechanics spend those couple more minutes evaluating the
repairs needed for your vehicle. Don›t forget, your car is one
of your biggest investments.
Midas always has new programs and promotions to look
out for on their website at www.midas.com.
Midas Coral Springs is located at 8080 Wiles Road Coral

CRUISEONE, Scavron,
Shatz & Associates have
relocated their business
to make it more convenient for their vacationing
customers. Cheryl and Ron Scavron, longtime residents
of Parkland and Coral Springs have been serving our
area’s traveling public for the past 15 years. Previously
located at 7600 Wiles Rd. in Coral Springs, Cheryl
and Ron have moved their business to the Festival
Market Place on Sample Road just east of the Turnpike.
CRUISEONE is an independently owned and operated
franchise of World Travel Holdings. There are over 750
franchises located all over the country. Back in 2003,
after only five years in business, Cheryl, Ron, their
associates and their client base, mostly made up of folks
from our town, reached a milestone. This organization
of experienced travel professionals became the highest
producing CRUISEONE franchise in the US. As Ron
always says, “We owe our success to our local, loyal client
base.” Cheryl and Ron book travel for clients from all over
the world but the loyalty shown to them from our local
residents is what has afforded them the pride and success
they enjoy today.
Cheryl and Ron have remained on top since they initially
reached this milestone. They have received numerous
awards from all of the suppliers they do business with. In
2007, Royal Caribbean International awarded CruiseOne,
Scavron, Shatz & Associates their US Southeast Region
Travel Agency of the Year. Cheryl and Ron met over 40
years ago in a hospital in N.J. Cheryl was a nurse and
Ron was a pharmacist. Cheryl says their second life, as
she refers to her life today, is really just an extension of
their first. Basically, we are doing the same thing. We help
people and enjoy doing it. Sometimes we slip back and
refer to our clients as patients. Anyone who has ever used
the services of CruiseOne will tell you that these people
really do care and they care not just about their client’s
vacations but also the families and overall well-being of
their clients.

DVDs To Put Kids At Ease
Westglades Middle School
By Ophir Rotem and Tiffany Thompson
W
e, the students of the STRIVE Student Council of Coral
Springs Charter School, recently coordinated a drive to
collect new and used children’s DVDs– G and PG rated.
This activity, which we titled “DVDs to put Kids at Ease,”
came after quite a lot of discussion and research, and combined
the idea of service to the community, and highlighting the
character traits of caring, generosity, and empathy.
We originally planned to visit
sick kids in hospital,

to spend
time and read to them but learned
that it would not be possible. We did not allow that small
setback to stop us, and asked in what other way we could
offer some comfort to the sick kids. After discussions with
staff in the Broward Department of Health, we learned that the
children’s wards in some hospitals needed additional children’s
DVDs. Our plan of action included a competition between the
different grades at Coral Springs Charter to see which grade
could collect the largest number of DVDs. We put out labeled
boxes in the morning before school, and placed them in the
front office during the day, to collect donations of DVDs. The
students of 8th grade surpassed expectations, and donated the
largest number of DVD’s.
The STRIVE Student Council boxed and donated well over
300 DVDs to the Broward Department of Health for children’s
wards throughout the county. This activity showed us that
anything is possible, reminded us to always think of others,
and to continually strive for success!
To give you a little background, the Coral Springs Charter
STRIVE Student Council’s initiative is based upon the
principles of community service and leadership. Every year,
we conduct several projects to help those in need in our
community, in whatever ways possible, collecting products,
food, and/or money, and donating our time and effort.

e’re getting our hands dirty for the environment on
Saturday, April 13th when we host our 4rd Annual
Earth Day Celebration. Let us show you how creating an
environmentally friendly landscape can be easy, inexpensive
and fun. Tour our hydroponic garden, visit educational
booths, help us plant a butterfly garden, even see an alligator,
a crocodile, a snake and other critters. We’re also still accepting
vendors that sell products that are from the earth or recycled.

Coconut Creek High School
oconut Creek High School has much to be proud of as
many of their students have recently received accolades
for their academics, athletic achievements and beyond!
Seven of Coconut Creek High’s student athletes were
recognized as being the best of the best in both their sport
and the classroom. Those students include: Meghan Dallas,
Meagan Delre, Michelle Floyd, Lashondra Jarrett, Junior
Jeannot, T’sahai Lee, and Nicholas Nunes.
Schiley Vertusca, a sophomore who left Haiti only about
18 months ago in search of better opportunities in the United
States, participated in the Broward County Science Fair.
Since August 2011, he has been carrying out research in the
Department of Biology at the University of Miami in the
laboratory of Dr. Julia Dallman. His research is focused on
the process of tissue regeneration in zebra fish. This overall
area of research is relevant to human beings because it may
one day decrease the extent to which we rely on obtaining
transplantable organs and tissues from donors. Dr. Dallman
has recently informed Schiley that he may continue his
research for the next year!
Many more of Coconut Creek High School’s students have
been in the spotlight for their hard work and dedication!

Beginners’ Reading Workshop
T
his summer the Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral
Springs, Inc. will be offering a program dedicated to
beginning readers, entitled “Kids Who Read Succeed.”
Educators agree that early success at reading acquisition
is one of the keys that unlocks a lifetime of reading habits.
The program will include reading instruction containing a
balance of activities designed to improve word recognition,
including phonics instruction, and reading meaningful text.
Phonics will be taught as part of the text because it can help
children attain automatic visual recognition of spelling
patterns within words for word recognition.
Writing activities will also be included because they affect
overall reading ability in a positive way.
Comprehension strategies will focus on material that is
relevant to children as well as the material the children read
themselves. Children entering kindergarten and first grade
in the fall will benefit from the program. Two classes will
be offered. The first session will run from June 17-28, and
session three will be held from July 29 through August 9.
Each class will meet Monday through Friday from 1:30- 3:30
PM. Class enrollment is limited to ten students. To find
out more information about this program, please call The
Clinic at (954) 755-0299.

Help For Struggling Readers
ould you like to see your child pick up a book and
read for enjoyment? If so, an inspiring and exciting
summer reading program offered at the Reading
and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs, Inc. will make
this possible.
The emphasis on the class will be on teaching reading
through strong literature based books. Students will choose
reading materials that foster motivation to read. They will
explore reading strategies through discussions and oral
book reading done in the context of sharing.
Encouraging students personal responses to literature will
improve their ability to construct meaning and strengthen
their comprehension abilities.
Reading rates will be taught through an explicit speedreading program utilizing computers for visual eye
movements. Ultimately, the program will teach students
the value of reading. Then they can recognize their own
potential as learners.
Three sessions are offered. Session 1 runs from June 17
through June 29, Session 2 meets from July 15 - July 19, and
Session 3 meets from July 29 - August 9. Classes will be held
Monday through Friday.
Grades (3-8) will benefit from this program. Enrollment is
limited to 10 students.

T
he Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs is
offering a class designed to give problem readers
a whole new chance. The program is called Reading
Mastery, and it is offered for students in grades 2-5 who
are struggling readers.
Students in the program learn basic decoding and
comprehension skills. Decoding is taught through an
explicit phonics method that stresses letter sounds, and
blending. Students practice decoding by reading word lists
and stories, both aloud and silently.
Comprehension activities include a variety of literal and
interpretive questions. Students also learn basic reasoning
skills, such as making inferences and drawing conclusions.
The daily reading selections include realistic fiction, fantasy
and factual articles.
The Reading Mastery program is designed so that students
are given directed reading lessons and are constantly tested
as they progress through each level. This is accomplished
by constant application and review.
Two classes are offered. The first session runs from June
17 - June 28 and the second session runs from July 29 August 9. Each class meets Monday through Friday from
3:30 - 5:30 pm.
Enrollment is limited to ten students.

Parkland Honors Heron Heights Elementary
By Nicol Jenkins, Editor
T
he Parkland City Commission recently honored Heron
Heights Elementary School for many accomplishments.
Heron Heights Elementary School was officially opened
in August 2009. The school has been an “A” rated school for
the last 4 years and their Math team has been in the top three
among all elementary schools for three years.
Heron Heights has also been labeled a “green school”. A
portion of the power they use is provided through on-site
solar panels, their communications are predominately done
through social media to be paperless, and the school recycles.
Heron Heights has a dedicated principal, Ken King, and a
wonderful staff that enjoys teaching. The parent groups are
highly involved and together with school staff they provide
a positive learning atmosphere.
The City congratulates Heron Heights Elementary School
on its success!

Riverglades Elementary School
By Pam Ofstein
A
pril is full of exciting events at Riverglades Elementary.
We are looking towards another great month of
involvement with our Riverglades superstars (our kids)
and families.
The PTA continues to be busy with fun-filled activities
planned for the month and remainder of the year. It’s always
a good time to get involved as we welcome your support.
We love our Teachers at Riverglades. Teacher Treats week
will begin on April 8th to recognize all those who support
us throughout the year. We can’t express how much you
are appreciated.
On April 10th through April 11th, Riverglades will once
again be providing school-wide lice checks to help prevent
the spread of lice. This is an important service provided
school-wide to our students throughout the year by the team
from Louse Calls.
Get ready on April 18th for Report Card Day and our
favorite Yogurt Craze Fundraiser. It’s time to pick your
favorite flavor and celebrate all their hard work and at the
same time support our school.
Original Works Program Art Fundraiser is back! We love
the arts and what better way than to showcase your child’s
masterpiece. Now is your chance. This year, we are excited
to bring back Original Works Program Art Fundraiser with
the help of our fantastic Art Department at Riverglades. Each
student can turn their drawing into a piece of art – pictures,
coasters, magnets, water bottles, phone cases…. you name
it. Look for your packets that will be sent home along with
order information this month.
And to round out the month, we know our kids love to
read and what better way to bring books to life than the
author himself, Harvey Oyer. Author Harvey Oyer will be
visiting our 4th and 5th graders on April 30th to present his
work. Here’s to reading!
There is always more information heading your
way. If you need more PTA information, don’t
forget to log on to the Riverglades PTA website at
www.rivergladeselementarypta.org. We are always
adding new and exciting information to keep our
families informed.

Parkland Celebrates 50th Birthday
By Nicol Jenkins, Editor
T
he City of Parkland has kicked off its 50th Birthday
Celebrations.
The City of Parkland will turn 50 on July 13th, 2013.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, the City has put
together multiple entertainment activities for residents to
enjoy. Each event that the City is offering will provide an
opportunity for residents of all ages to celebrate together
with their Parkland friends and neighbors. The events
will take place throughout the year at various locations
throughout the City in order to showcase the diverse
variety of parks and facilities available to residents.
On March 10, the City of Parkland presented the first
of a series of events to celebrate the City’s 50th Birthday.
Let’s Hang On!– America’s #1 Frankie Valli Tribute
Show, was performed live on stage. At the event, there
were also bounce houses and children’s activities and,
of course, birthday cake was served for everyone. It was a fun
affair for all!
The next event will be a three-day carnival held at Pine
Trails Park from April 19th to April 21st. There will be rides,
games and food for children of all ages. On Saturday, April
20th at 7 pm, the Caribbean Chillers will take the stage for a
free concert.
On April 27th, residents are invited to a concert and fireworks
featuring “The Little River Band” from 7 pm to 9 pm at Pine
Trails Park. The Little River Band has sold more than 25 million
records and achieved 13 U.S. Top 40 hits, and will perform
a free concert to celebrate Parkland’s 50th Anniversary
beginning at 7pm at the Parkland Amphitheater located in
Pine Trails Park. This amazing evening will culminate with
a dazzling fireworks display.
If you like classic cars, you won’t want to miss the Tri-City
Classic Car Show and Car Ride on April 28th from 10 am
to 3 pm at the Parkland Equestrian Center. In conjunction
with the Parkland Historical Society, the City of Tamarac
and City of Coral Springs- whom are also celebrating their
50th anniversary- a Tri-City Car Ride featuring the elected
officials from all three municipalities will take place. The
Car ride will begin in Tamarac, travel through Coral Springs
and culminate at the Parkland Equestrian Center, where a
classic car show will take place from 10 am to 3 pm. The community is invited to come out to one or all of
these great celebratory events!

ome out and enjoy a celebration of the coconut- for
which the City of Coconut Creek is named after- with
the residents of Coconut Creek.
On Sunday April 21st, from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M., there will
be culinary and cultural tributes to the coconut at the City’s
third annual “CocoFest.”
This event will be held at the SW Corner of Wiles and
Lyons Road at the Promenade at Coconut Creek. There will
be tropical music, exotic birds, dancers, vendors, a Green
Expo, and arts & crafts for the kids. Attendees can even climb
a coconut tree and play coconut games.
The City is looking for vendors to be a part of the Green
Expo. Being a part of the expo will include: a booth at the
Green Expo (10’ x 10’ tent, 8’ table and two folding chairs), a
business logo sent in the Promenade shoppers club e-blasts
to over 3,000 members, inclusion on Promenade’s social
media sites, permission to distribute marketing items such as
flyers to attendees of the event, and advertising leading up to
the event.
The event is sure to be a fun time for all!

Book Review
The Aqua-Phi
Author: Joel Salomon
S
By Fred Karr, Staff Writer
elf-publishing is a welcome trend
in the area of books. I heartily
welcome such a trend, and The AquaPhi, by Joel Salomon is a great example.
Just because a book is not published by one of the major
firms, does not automatically mean that it is not worth reading.
Further, the fact that an author is self-publishing his or her
volume may mean that this person has the courage of his or
her convictions. So let’s give Mr. Salomon a chance.
The plotline moves quickly. For the most part, the sentences
and paragraphs of The Aqua-Phi are short. That is fine by me;
I’m not a fan of sentences which can easily run (and ramble).
The size of the dramatis personae is moderate. I’m not a happy
camper with burgeoning dramatis personae, with swarms
of individuals flitting in and out of the verbal landscape,
appearing briefly, and then just as quickly disappearing, never
to be seen or heard from again.
In addition, the author very conveniently lists “The AquaPhi Cast” at the beginning of the book. This is an action which
I have never seen before and which I find most welcome. Let’s
hope it becomes a trend.
Further on, the author gives us some graphic word-pictures.
Thus, the boat was “coasting in steam”… a bit later.. “into
the darkness filled with steam that floated by the glass on a
constant creep.” Again, bravo Mr. Salomon.
And who knows--- maybe The Aqua-Phi will become such a
success that the major publishing houses will be begging Mr.
Salomon for his future services. Let’s see what happens.
The Aqua-Phi is now available at Apple iTunes, Barnes & Noble
Nook, Amazon Kindle, Lulu, and Kobo. For more information or
for a hard copy of the book, call 561-252-7818.
