Downtown Alhambra will host its second annual free Hot Spot Summer Night Series from 5
p.m. to 8 p.m. every Saturday in August at the

and Main. The event will celebrate music, fashion, art, and dance. “This year, the Hot Spot is
stepping it up by bringing live bands, art, and
dance,” said Joanna Vargas, president of the sponsoring Downtown Alhambra Business Association. “It’s a free family event with activities, music, local businesses, and fun.”

students receive awards
from Special Dreams
The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation recently awarded six college scholarships
and grants to aspiring and working artists at
Alhambra High School during its first annual
music benefit concert featuring musicians with
disabilities and others who support the special needs community.
Nearly 500 people attended the benefit
concert, which took place at the Alhambra
High School Auditorium in May. Noted film
and television actor Marco Rodriguez served
as master of ceremonies for the concert which
featured musical performances by the
Alhambra High School Jazz Band, James Ruiz,
Rick Perez, Angel Gomez, Galanis, Alissa
Monte, and the Latin alternative music band
Monte Negro. Prior to the concert, attendees
were treated to an art exhibition in front of
the high school auditorium displaying original works of art by Tom Doyle, Martin Vogel,
Jhovana Cecena, Todd Tostado, and Oscar
Cristerna.
This year’s scholarship recipients included
Alhambra High School graduating seniors
Melina Ngo, Javier Alcala, and one of the featured singers, Angel Gomez, in addition to
working artist grants given to Alhambra High
School alumnus Todd Tostado as well as
Jhovana Cecena and Alan Cheng. Each of the
award recipients has been a featured “artist in
residence” whose works of art have been
prominently displayed on the Academy of
Special Dream Foundation’s Web site,

Top ten tips on keeping seniors safe in summer heat

As “June gloom” fades into
summer, we now lose the cooler
mornings and are faced with
the health issues of summer
heat.
And, while older people have
some unique challenges due to
weather, in many respects, the
health concerns of seniors parallel those of young children
when out of doors. It is time
for my annual warnings and
common sense tips for successful summer living.
A number of Web sites focusing on senior health issues
have addressed the senior
population during the summer
months. Here are some of the
suggestions from the Living
Independently Group with my
annotations.
All of us require prudent
provisions for issues of sun exposure and hydration. However, children and seniors are
particularly at risk and vulnerable at this time of year, especially in Southern California.

Keeping Seniors Safe
in Summer Heat
• Drink plenty of liquids—
eight or more eight-ounce
glasses per day and or fruit
juices—every day to stay hydrated. The importance of hydration cannot be overestimated. A number of health
conditions either result or are
aggravated by insufficient fluid
intake.
• Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. As most of
us know from experience, caffeine acts as a diuretic, helping
the body rid itself of water.
Drinking lots of coffee will only
guarantee that you lose lots of
fluid.
• Dress appropriately. This
is not merely the advice we give
to grandchildren. In hotter
weather, it is important for seniors to wear loose-fitting
clothes in natural fabrics like
cotton and dress in light colors
that will reflect the sun and heat
instead of darker colors that will
attract them. Sometimes older
persons overestimate the need
for coats and sweaters which
may work great in drafty, airconditioned rooms, but can be
devastating in the outdoors of
sunny Southern California.
• When outdoors, protect
your skin from damage by
wearing hats, sunglasses, and a
sunscreen of 30 SPF or more.
Doctors have conclusively
shown the dangers of unprotected skin exposure to the sun.

Senior Outings scheduled for August,

• Stay indoors during extreme heat.
• If you do not have air conditioning
in your apartment, go somewhere that
does. A movie theater, the mall, a friend
or relative’s home or a community senior center are all good options. The
emergency plans of continuing care retirement communities in Alhambra are
all required to have contingency plans
for accommodating residents and others in times of extreme heat emergencies.
• If you need to get out of the house
and don’t drive a car, call a taxi, a friend,
or a transportation service. Do NOT
wait outside for the bus in extreme heat.
I know of one nearly blind 89-year-old
who insisted on walking to the grocery
store in 105 degree heat. She almost
ended up in the hospital.
• If you are absolutely unable to leave
the house and do not have air conditioning, take a cool bath or shower to
lower your body temperature on extremely hot days.
• Temperatures inside the home
should not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit for prolonged periods of time. Even
a common inexpensive fan can be of
great help in moving the air around.
And, a wet washcloth will help maximize the effects of it.
• Know the signs of heat stroke (e.g.,
flushed face, high body temperature,
headache, nausea, rapid pulse, dizziness,
and confusion) and take immediate action if you feel them coming on.
If you are a younger person with a
senior living in your neighborhood, recognize that they are at special risk in high
heat situations.
Care-givers, and good neighbors,
need to check with the elderly to see how
they are doing.
The following suggestion by one senior advocacy group bears quoting:
“Does an elderly person live in your
neighborhood? Go knock on the door
and ask how things are going. Do NOT
accept the first answer. We all want to
say, ‘Oh, I’m ok, don’t worry.’ The person may not realize they are suffering
from heat exhaustion.
Invite them into air conditioning,
offer to take them to an air conditioned
mall or other building. Sit in a hospital
waiting room, anything to get out of the
heat for a while. Ask a senior to become
an overnight guest.”
The Joslyn Adult Recreation Center

new wall covering, new flooring, new
lights, new windows, and new paint.
But beyond the improved aesthetics,
the Joslyn Center, on reopening this
summer, will also feature improvements
that will enhance access and movement
of the disabled, thanks to many Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades, and
save energy through the installation of a
new “cool” roof, energy-efficient HVAC
units, energy-saving lighting, and more.

program is regularly transporting
Alhambra’s seniors to some of the choicest scenic sites in Southern California

studying jaw problems and
skull development, I learned
breast feeding is very different
from bottle feeding.
The mechanics of breast
feeding, for the child, require
more lower jaw movement, like
a drawer going out and in,
which provides active strengthening of muscles in the face.
The mother’s nipple also
flattens and gets reshaped so

the baby can express milk out
of the breast. It has a broader,
flatter appearance than what
we see with the typical bottle
nipple, which is round and bulbous. The nipple fills the baby’s
upper palate, and the sucking
action provides an upward
pressure to help shape the face.
This affects the formation of
the bite, possibly the eye
socket, and pressures in the
head, face, and mouth.
I recalled this information
while attending a recent lecture
by Dr. Richard Gorris, DDS.
He also gave additional information concerning the development of a baby’s skull.
He said the skull develops
in three areas: upper third,
middle third, and lower third
of the head. Refined sugar can
alter the rate of growth of these
different segments, particularly
the upper and middle thirds,
so they don’t grow evenly.
This can affect vision, as the
six muscles controlling eyeball
movement attach on both segments.
He also stated lauric acid, an
amino acid essential for growth
and development of the brain,
is highest in human milk.

during pregnancy affect the developing fetus. These include
alcohol, prescription medications, caffeine, and over-thecounter drugs.
Dr. Gorris said combining
certain foods can also produce
narcotic-like drugs in the body,
which can equally damage the
fetus. One example was ingesting gluten, a non-soluble protein found in grains, with
casein, another non-soluble
protein found in dairy.
He was describing pizza,
which is made with a high gluten wheat flour and cheese.
Providing a healthful environment before and after birth will
help give the baby the best start
in life. Perhaps it could even
maximize brain development,
create an appetite for healthful
foods, optimize healthy vision,
prevent jaw problems, improve
digestive tract function, and
maintain a healthy immune
system.
So consider eating fresh
fruits and vegetables; drinking
adequate amounts of water;
getting enough sleep; exercising regularly for good circulation, strength and flexibility;
and engaging in happy social
activities for a lifelong habit
leading to good health.

Don’t Let Your Eyes Get Sunburned & Other Summer Eye Warnings

When we spend time at the beach or
out in the sun, everyone knows you need
to wear sunblock to protect our skin. But
did you realize that one of the reasons
you need to wear sunglasses that have
the proper UV protection is because
your eyes can get sunburned too?
Yes, your eyes can actually get sunburned. Too much UV radiation without the proper sun protection and your
eyes will burn similar to getting sunburned on your skin. And, believe me,
it hurts!
The eyes get red and irritated. The
long term result can lead to cataracts and
macular degeneration. Both of these may
cause vision loss or even blindness.
Summer also brings increased opportunities for possible eye injuries since
most of us are outside more. When
should you seek emergency treatment,
and what can you treat by yourself?
Eye emergencies basically fall into the
following categories:
• Blunt impacts to the eye
• Scratches, cuts
• Foreign objects in the eye
• Chemical exposures and burns, including sunburn
• Infections
All of these require immediate attention from your eye doctor. You should
seek emergency room treatment if the
injury is an open wound involving the
eye or bone fractures around the eye.
Otherwise, an optometrist is highly
trained to treat eye injuries and may
even be able to take care of you faster if
the ER doesn’t have an eye care professional immediately available. Following
are some first-aid steps you can take to
minimize pain and injury.
Blunt impacts to the eye: If there is
any pain or swelling, seek medical attention right away. Black eyes are often

compress over the eye or under the eye.
But you still want an eye doctor to ensure there was no additional damage.

Recently, new guidelines were introduced for suntan lotions and tanning beds.
Although the sun may make us feel happy and encourages outdoor living, we have to be careful. We now
know that the sun emits two different rays: UVA and
UVB. Your sunscreen should include coverage for both
of these.
The new guidelines state that SPF 50 is the highest
recommended strength required. The sunscreen must
also state that it protects from both rays. Gone are the
days when just applying sunscreen in the morning
worked. You should apply your sunscreen evenly prior
to putting on your clothing, and again if you go into
the water.
Be sure to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours,
or if you sweat excessively, more often. In the past, we
were told that the alternate to unhealthful tans was to
use a tanning salon and tanning beds. We know that is
not the case.
Excessive tanning using a tanning bed is just as harmful. Studies have shown an increase in the skin cancer

tanning beds.
If you spend a lot of time in your car, you may notice that the left side of your face and arms show significantly more sun damage that the right. The car
window does not protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Most windshields effectively block UV and UVB;
however, the side windows do not protect you from
UV or UVB. The UV rays are cumulative, and studies
show that exposure to sun through glass leads to skin
damage. Protect yourself from the sun while driving

driving, using at least a 15 SPF and reapply
after two hours. If you can apply a UV-protective window coating to your car windows,
that has shown to be effective in cutting down
the skin damage by at least 93%.
Be sure to check local guidelines as some
states regulate window tinting and you don’t
want to get a ticket for trying to protect your-
self. It is also recommended that you use at least a teaspoon of sunscreen on your face alone.
Protecting your child against the sun is so important. Studies have shown an increase in skin cancers in
children who were sunburned at least twice during their
childhood. Unfortunately, our public schools deem sunscreen to be a drug and therefore they are not able to
use it without a doctor’s prescription. As this would be
pretty much impossible, schools in all probability are
not going to apply sunscreen to your kids. Dress your
child appropriately, and ask that they be allowed to
stay in during recess, especially if you feel they may be
at risk. Children with very fair skin should not be outside playing without full sunscreen protection.
The pale and passionate look of the Victorian era is
back. Gone are the days when models all looked as
though they had been baked. The new slogan for the
Skin Cancer Foundation is “Go With Your Own Glow.”
As long ago as 2,580 BC, early Egyptians were aware
that pale meant beauty. Nofret’s (her name means “the
beauty”) skin was pure white. Her pale complexion was
admired by many and reflects that she was of the highest rank. Of course, to maintain that look, she used

Walking mile a day keeps the dentist away

It is well accepted that regular physical exercise reduces the risk of getting
heart disease, colon cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, high cholesterol, and
a range of other disorders. Now Dentistry News has published a study by researchers from Case Western Reserve
University showing that physical activity may also reduce the risk of getting
periodontitis, an inflammatory gum
condition that afflicts over one-third of
the population in the U.S. and is con-
sidered to be the chief cause of adult
tooth loss.
Data from 12,110 individuals found
that individuals who exercised, had
healthful eating habits, and maintained
a normal weight were 40% less likely to
develop periodontitis. Another similar
study reported in the
Journal of Dentistry, showed that nonsmokers who exercise regularly have
54% less risk of having periodontitis
than those who smoke and don’t exercise.

of the following: walking a mile without
stopping, jogging or running, bike
riding, aerobic dancing or exercise, danc-
ing, swimming, calisthenics, garden or
yard work, and weight lifting. If individuals reported five or more moderate
physical activities or three intensive activity sessions a week, it was considered
a healthful regimen.
Researchers concluded that such exercise programs offer such a wide range
of benefits because, at least in part, it
reduces C-reactive protein which is associated with inflammatory processes
that lead to periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the gums.
Regular brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist reduce the bacterial burden that spreads inflammation
of the gums. Regular, healthful exercise
apparently reduces the degree of inflammatory response in the gums in the presence of bacterial activity and thus reduces the risk of periodontitis.
The appropriate exercise for an individual should be determined in consultation with a health professional.
Walking a mile a day just might keep
the dentist away, at least between regular check-ups.

apply a sterile dressing or a clean cloth
to both eyes (so you don’t move your
eyes a lot), and then get immediate emergency room help.
Foreign object in the eye: If it’s a
small object, do not rub your eye. Try to
locate the object (dirt, eyelash, etc.) and
then try to flush it out with water. If
you cannot find it or remove it, seek help
from your eye doctor.
If the object is embedded in the eye,
you need to seek medical help immediately. Leave the object in place and do
not touch it or try to remove it. Do
not apply any pressure to it. You
should also bandage both eyes, as this
will keep the eyes from moving. Use a
sterile dressing or clean cloth. If the object is large, put a paper cup or cone
over it and cover the unaffected eye with
the dressing or cloth. Seek emergency
room treatment.
Chemical injuries: Immediately
flush the eye with water for 10 minutes
before you do anything else, no matter
what the chemical is, i.e., battery acid,
detergent, bleach, aerosols, fumes, etc.
Use either clear water or salt water.
Those 10 minutes can make all the difference in preserving your precious gift
of sight.
Once you have finished flushing, call
your eye doctor to be seen immediately.
Pink Eye: Call your eye care professional right away. There are different
forms of pink eye – one of which is very
contagious. The treatment will vary depending on what is causing the pink eye.
Prevention
Prevention is always your best bet.

Here are some common sense things you
can do to prevent injury or damage to
your eyes:
• Always wear protective gear when
working with chemicals, power tools,
hammers, and other tools used in a striking manner.
• Always wear goggles made specifically for sports that could involve the
likelihood of eye injury, such as baseball, racquetball, etc.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
has been used to treat infertility since
ancient times in China and other Asian
countries. Acupuncture and herbs are the
two major modalities in TCM. Today
TCM has been widely accepted in Western countries.

most recent research studies on TCM for
treating infertility.
Ear acupuncture for fertility
The German doctor, Dr.Gerhard,
used auricular acupuncture for 45
women with infertility. Twenty-two
women got pregnant. Compared with a
hormone treatment group, the acupuncture group had no side-effects observed.
In addition, various disorders, such as
insomnia, headache, and anxiety were
resolved during the acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture can reduce stress and
increase pregnancy rates among IVF patients
A recent report on acupuncture for
IVF (in vitro fertilization) patients was
published in 2010 in the journal
Complementary Therapies in Clinical
Practice. This study was done by Dr.
Wakim, et al, at the Magee-Womens
Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh.
Fifty-seven infertile patients undergoing
IVF or IVF/ICSI (intracytoplasmic
sperm injection) were divided into an
acupuncture group and a non-acupuncture group.
The researchers concluded that the
acupuncture regimen was associated
with less stress both before and after
embryo transfer and it possibly improved pregnancy rates. Lower perceived
stress at the time of embryo transfer may
play a role in an improved pregnancy
rate.
Herbs with acupuncture for fertility
Published in 2010 in the Journal of
Alternative and Complementary Medicine, a co-joined study between the
United States and Korea, 23 women
with unexplained infertility were treated
with acupuncture and herbal medicine
in Korea for six months; 14 women got
pregnant, yielding a pregnancy rate of
60.9%.

Mandarin Baptist, Salvation Army aid
low-income students with school supplies
The Mandarin Baptist Church of Los
Angeles (MBCLA) and the Salvation
Army San Gabriel Corp are partnering
together to distribute a free set of school
uniforms and a backpack filled with
school supplies to elementary school
students from low-income families in
the San Gabriel Valley. The Mandarin
Baptist Church of Los Angeles, located
in Alhambra, will host the distribution
event on Saturday, Aug. 6. A children’s
program, as well as parenting workshops, will be provided for the 300
qualifying students and their families.
“Many families are struggling to get
by because of the recession, and parents
should not have to choose between paying rent and buying school supplies,”
said Mandarin Baptist’s English Congregation Pastor Francis Chung. “We
hope this program will ease the financial burden and allow parents to focus
on what is really important—getting
their kids ready to learn.”
To participate, low-income families
must register at the Salvation Army, 125
E. Valley Blvd, San Gabriel 91776 by
July 8. Registration times are 2 p.m.–
4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays. Applicants must provide:
• Picture ID of parent or legal guardian
• Proof of residence or attendance at
a school in Alhambra, San Gabriel,
Rosemead, Monrovia, or Temple City
• Student ID, birth certificate, or
court papers showing legal guardianship
for child applicant who is between kindergarten to eighth grade
• Proof of low-income (i.e., household paystubs, welfare, SSI, etc)

Summer SEA campers learning about exotic fish.
Summer SEA visits STAR Eco-Station
Summer SEA Daycamp visited the
STAR Eco-Station in Culver City, a rescue station for exotic pets, last month.
During the visit, the campers met many
animals and learned about the difficulties that may occur from purchasing
exotic pets.
The campers learned that exotic pets
need far more care than a cat or dog.
They got to pet Elvis, the blue-tongued
skink, who is missing the toes on all his
feet because the previous owner was
unaware of the help Elvis would need
during his shedding process each month.
When they met Pico, the chinchilla,
they learned that chinchillas are nocturnal and very timid.
They met many more animals, in-
cluding a 73-year-old parrot named
Guacamole and a baby American alligator, illegally shipped via Fed-Ex from
Texas to California, named Baby Rex.
“Summer SEA had a wonderful time
at the STAR Eco-Station, and it is still
not too late for your own child to come
and experience the same fun!” said director Miriam Hamby.

Alhambra High School students receive awards
from Academy of Special Dreams Foundation
“One way we achieve our mission to
increase public awareness of the creative
talents of people with disabilities is to
arrange for scholarships, cash grants, and
other financial support for disabled artists to promote their further participation in the arts,” said Michael Dergar,
president and CEO of the Pasadenabased Academy of Special Dreams
Foundation.
One award recipient Alan Cheng was
born with a severe diaphragmatic hernia that required numerous surgeries
during his early childhood before doctors were successful in their efforts to
implant an artificial diaphragm. While
still physically fragile, Alan, 24 years old,
has persevered despite these obstacles
and presently attends Pasadena City
College where his studies include poetry.
Under the auspices of the Academy of
Special Dreams Foundation, Alan was
the Special Guest of Honor at the 2011
Poetry Slam sponsored by Alhambra
High School.
“I want to thank the Academy of Special Dreams Foundation for welcoming
me and allowing my poetry to be read
by a wider audience,” said Alan. “I really appreciate the encouragement and
support of my poetry from Michael

“The Alhambra crowd will have an
hour break to enjoy the many vendors
offering clothes, activities, food, and more
before the amazing Spazmatics take the
stage,” said Ms. Vargas.“The Spazmatics,
an ‘80s New Wave and Pop Tribute band,
is known as “Nerds That Rock” and have
a kooky and off-the-wall style of performance. They’re sure to entertain all
night.”
Aug. 13 will offer a fashion show that
will highlight the businesses of Downtown Alhambra. Each of the five walks
will convey a different look and a different attitude. “Sporty to sassy will be showcased on the runway,” said Ms. Vargas.
“All vendors will be open for the entire
show. The show will be accompanied by
a DJ who will provide the strut songs and
finish out the night with some dance hits
to keep the party going.”
It’s all about art for the third Hot Spot
taking place on Aug. 20. “This event will
provide a platform for up-and-coming
artists and display many of the local businesses that enjoy spreading their love of
art,” said Ms. Vargas. There will be live
art, body art, children’s drawing, poetry,
tattoos, chalk art, and more. There will
also be crafts for children.
“Wrapping up the 2011 Hot Spot is
the extraordinary dance week, where the
focus is all on the blood-pumping dance
styles. Jam-packed with a Crew competition and a Break-dance Battle, this competition will explode on the stage and will
crown just one team as Alhambra’s Best
Dance Crew,” said Ms. Vargas. There will
be music, free dance classes, and guest
dance surprises.

Jayvee Dance Center offers week-long Summer Dance Intensive
Dance Center, 216 E. Main
St., is offering a week-long dance
extravaganza bringing together
various professional choreographers in the dance industry and
throughout the community all
under one roof. The choreographers will provide Master dance
classes for dancers of all levels
and ages in various styles such
as ballet, jazz, breaking, popping,
locking, hip hop, krump house,
modern, and more.
“The intensive trains not only
competition dancers to prepare
for the upcoming season, but is
open to everyone wanting to
improve their technique,” said

The Summer Dance Intensive will be offered from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Monday, July 11 – Friday, July 15 for dancers ages 4
and up.
Jayvee has three different class

Iceberg Ahead! continues in July
at Mosaic Lizard Theater

Jay Parker’s hit comedy’Iceberg Ahead! will

The Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus

Gallery Nucleus to feature Harry
Potter Tribute Art Exhibition
Gallery Nucleus, 210 E. Main St., will present the Harry Potter Tribute Art
Exhibition Saturday, July 9 through Aug. 1.
The Harry Potter Tribute Art Exhibition features art from more than 50 artists
and fans from around the world.
Among the featured artists is Mary Grandpre, cover illustrator of the American
editions of the Harry Potter book series.
The exhibit opens a week before the final Harry Potter film hits the local theaters. The opening reception is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 9.
Admission is $2 per person except for those who come in costume and/or when
one Facebooks, Twitters, or blogs about the event before July 2 at http://

During the opening reception, a Hogwarts-themed
photo booth opens at 7:15 p.m., a Harry Potter Trivia

Double Dip? Not So Fast

There is a lot of talk in the media about
a double dip in the real estate market these
days. This may be true nationally, but there
is an old adage that states, “All real estate is
local,” and I know all my clients aren’t concerned with what is going on nationally as
much as what is going on locally.
Sub markets don’t always move with the
overall market. California doesn’t move with
Florida, and Alhambra doesn’t move with
Riverside. I understand how some markets
have started down again, but view it as
highly unlikely that local property values will
go much lower, or reach previous lows.
The local values seem to be bouncing
along in a range that is basically flat. Sometimes a look at the supply of homes for sale
and the rate of homes selling will give you
an indication of which direction the market is headed. A six-month supply at the
current rate of sale is considered normal.
Anything less would be a sellers’ market
(trending higher) and anything more would
be a buyers’ market (trending lower).
Alhambra is currently right at six, a normal market. A look at median prices shows
that while prices bounce a bit, they look to
be staying in a fairly flat range. In the last
six months, the median number of days it
took to sell a home was 53.
San Gabriel and Monterey Park came in
with similar numbers with days to sell at 57
and 56. Inventories were both on the low
side of six, again a normal market.
The only local markets that showed an
increase in inventory were South Pasadena

The proper understanding of mold issues increasingly shows up in real estate
transactions. Realtors like me will present
clients with no less than five documents

instruct or at least have a section telling
the buyer/seller of the potential hazards of
mold in the home and reminding buyers
of their rights in conducting mold inspections.
Recently before a cabinet meeting at my
church, the First Baptist Church of
Alhambra, I was lamenting the growing attention given to mold in the world of real
estate and what appears to be a New Frontier of litigation. Our Pastor, Dr. Lee
Hamby, looked over at me and suggested
that I take a look at the 14th chapter of
the book of Leviticus in the Bible. It turns
out that mold in the home has been a topic
of discussion for a long time.
Leviticus is a book of Old Testament
law and was written in the 16th century
B.C. It covers an array of divine laws and
addresses the treatment of mildew/mold
in homes in chapter 14 verses 35-55. Here
the high priest (a term used prior to the
destruction of the holy temple in Jerusalem) is designated as the central person responsible for examining homes which are
thought to have mold.
This passage starts to establish a process by saying that “the owner of the house
must go and tell the priest, ‘I have seen
something that looks like mildew (mold)
in my house’ (v. 35, New International Version). The priest is to then “order the house
to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mildew” (v.36).
The process first attempts to remove the
mold from the home. If mold has “greenish or reddish depressions that appear

deeper than the surface of the wall, the priest
shall go out the doorway of the house and
close it up for seven days” (v.37, 38). The
priest is then to go back and inspect the
house. If mold has spread on the walls, the
priest is to “order that the contaminated
stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town” (v. 39). The
section of the wall is then to be repaired with
“new clay and plaster” (v. 42).
However, if the mold continues to exist
and spread in the house, ramifications are
more severe. The house is designated as unclean and “it (the house) must be torn
down“– its stones, timbers and all the plaster–– taken out of the town to an unclean
place” (v. 45).
The means of addressing the situation
may not have totaled multi-million dollar
settlements, but in their time, these courses
of action had ramifications of a very high
order.
Currently, some of the things you can
do to limit mold in your home are eliminate damp areas in your house (i.e., fix leaks
and areas where water congregates), keep
your basement dry, apply undiluted bleach
to areas of mold, avoid damp potting soil in
the house, keep damp fire wood outside,
clean flooring and shower pans/tile frequently, and allow air to circulate with either an air conditioning system or by opening windows.
So the topic of mold in a home is not
new. Historically, mold has commanded attention for nearly 4,000 years. And I am now
continuing to read Leviticus for the chapter
that covers liquidated damages.

Financial challenges of parenthood
As our children travel this long
and never-dull road from infancy
to adulthood, we nurture them,
worry about them, scold them,
love them. Most of all, we try to
protect them. We want them to
grow up in a stable world, one in
which they are physically safe,
emotionally nurtured, and financially secure. Still, meeting expenses can be a challenge.
How expensive is raising a
child?
The United States Department
of Agriculture estimates that the
average nationwide cost of raising
one child from cradle to college
entrance at age 18 ranges from
$205,960 to $475,680, depending
on income. (Source: Expenditures
on Children by Families, 2009)
Then, when they turn 18, add in
college expenses, and your financial outlay can get even worse.
How much worse? According to
the College Board, for the 2010/
2011 school year, the average cost
of one year at a four-year public
college is $20,339 (for in-state students), while the average cost for
one year at a four-year private college is $40,476. That would come
to $81,356 for a four-year degree
at a public college and $161,904
at a private university.
The bottom line: Children are
expensive. Between raising them
and educating them and making
sure they get a good, strong start
in life, one thing is obvious when
it comes to children—they are a
major responsibility. Fortunately,
as long as we remain alive and
healthy, we manage to somehow
meet these expenses. It’s part of
what parenthood is all about.

children grow up. And remember,
just as they are important to you,
you are important to them. Make
