Calvary Baptist Church is a body of believers whose purpose is …
To glorify God by becoming disciples
who know and live God’s will.
July 2015 Events
Well, it’s June once
more which means
Father’s Day is upon
us. It’s that time of the
year where we take a
day to say “Thanks” to
the Dads who have
provided for us, counseled us, coached us,
protected us, encouraged us and loved us.
It’s fitting that we
pause for one day to
acknowledge our gratitude for these men
with cards, small gifts, and words of appreciation.
Imagine, however, that for the other 364 days
of the year we ignored, blamed, criticized, and
rarely even acknowledged our Dads. What would
Father’s Day mean to them then? Probably very
little. Though not to this extent, too often our
society treats our Heavenly Father in somewhat
similar ways. We talk to Him only in times of crisis
or need and when we do utter His name out loud,
it is as an expletive. We ignore the counsel He
has given us in His Word, believing in essence
that “we know better.” Yet, when we experience
the consequences of ignoring His counsel, He is
the first one we blame. Rather than just one day a
year, we may acknowledge Him on more Sundays
than not, but once we’re out of the doors of the
church, He is relegated to the distant corners of
our hearts and minds until the next Sunday morning.
Like an earthly Dad, God grieves when our
affection and affirmation of Him seems sporadic,
limited or conditional, perhaps even rejecting
Him outright (Genesis 6: 5 - 6). Fortunately, despite our dishonoring behavior, God continues to
love us and waits patiently for that day when our
hearts turn back to Him and we love Him as He
has loved us (John 3:16).
This Father’s Day, remember that what
means the most to Dads is not what we do on
this one special day, but how we treat him the
rest of the year. May we also remember the
same is true of our Heavenly Father and may we
show Him the honor and respect He deserves
not just on Sundays, but every day of our lives.
Dads - Happy Father’s Day and “Thank You”
for all that you’ve done for us throughout our
lives!

We are using a Sunday morning teaching ministry called “Napkin Theology.” We will be

Arrah Wanna Summer Camp Theme:
“DON’T STOP BELIEVING”
Dates: High School: July 6 – 10
Middle School: July 20 – 24
Register by June 22nd to take advantage of the Arrah Wanna Early Registration.
Cost: $260 before June 22nd.
This summer we will be looking at the life of Job - someone in the bible who worked hard
at living a righteous life and still had lots of bad things happen to him. Everyone faces
hardships, and it’s important for us to understand that God is faithfully loving us through
all circumstances - the good and the bad. We may not be able to control what happens
to us, but we can always choose how we respond. Believing and trusting in Gods promise to love, comfort and provide during times of struggle is a foundational part of a strong
faith. Come to summer camp and explore with us what it looks like to “Don’t Stop Believing”
The following groups will be taking a summer break.
The College/Career Study group is on break until September. For more
information contact April Tate.
The Afternoon Bible Study is taking a summer break and will resume
September 9th. For more information contact Lydia Gilman.
Women’s Fellowship is on Summer break. Meetings will resume in August. For more information, contact Nancy Grabow.
The Van Goers are on Summer break. There will be a summer picnic in
August. Please contact Lorrine Walker, Nancy Gookin, or Joan Massey
for more information.

This Gold Medallion-winning book
is for those who may be feeling
attracted to Jesus but who struggle
with difficult questions standing
squarely in their path. For Christians, this book will deepen your
convictions and give you fresh confidence in discussing Christianity
with even your most skeptical
friends.
Early Risers meet on Tuesdays
from 6:30 - 7:30 am at Calvary.
Men, if you’re not plugged into another LifeGroup, come check us
out!
Our campsite is a short walk to the beach on the beautiful Oregon coast! We have
enough space for 25 people. We can have up to a 20 ft. RV and six vehicles (extra vehicles cost $6.00 apiece).

We are studying from Lee Strobel’s
book, “The Case for Faith.” In an
age where there is increasing skepticism shown towards Christianity,
Strobel addresses the most persistent emotional objections to belief the eight “heart barriers” to faith
(e.g. Why is there evil? Isn’t there
more than one way to God? What
about evolution? etc.).

Another Exceptional
Volunteer
This month we want to offer a
special “Thanks” to Ken Hetsel
for all the time and effort he graciously contributes setting up
our coffee time each Sunday
morning. Every week Ken arrives early in order to prepare
the coffee and snacks and then
remains late to ensure things
are cleaned up. Thank you, Ken,
for your servant’s heart and for
making sure there’s a cup of hot
coffee (or hot chocolate) to welcome us on Sundays!
Calvalog Collators
We Need More Help!
The Calvalog Collators are a volunteer group
whose purpose is a fundamental part of producing
& mailing our Calvalog newsletter. Each month
they faithfully come to the church to label and prepare the Calvalog for mailing. There are approximately 280 Calvalog newsletters mailed out per month. It is essential
that this group maintain enough volunteers to complete their duties
in a manner that is efficient, timely and as easy on our volunteers as
possible. Please consider becoming a volunteer member of this
group. For more information, please contact the church office at 503363-9246.
All Church Work Day
Our next “All Church Work Day” is scheduled for August 15th at 9
am. This will be a day we dedicate to beautifying the
outside of our church. There will be something for
everyone and many hands will help us to get the
work done quickly. Everyone is encouraged and
invited to participate. Please mark this date on your
calendar and plan to attend.
Faith & Family Night - Volcanos’ Stadium
On Friday, July 17th, Corban
University is sponsoring the
Volcanoes “Faith & Family
Night,” which includes a pregame faith-based concert,
words from a Major League
Baseball chaplain, and a fantastic post-game fireworks show. On the
field, the Volcanoes take on the Boise Hawks, affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. This will be a great family-friendly evening but seating
is limited so please reserve your personal or group tickets soon.
Contact the Voice of the Volcanoes, Rob Schreier, at
<[email protected]> or 503-390-2225. Tickets for groups of
25+ start at just $7. This could also be a great LifeGroup event!
