2nd European Language Day – Saturday, October 27th at the Goethe-­‐Institut Hanoi Guten Tag – Hello – Bonjour -­‐ Buenos días -­‐ Jó napot -­‐ Buongiorno: European languages introduce themselves and encourage to learn more about Europe's linguistic diversity. Good news for all present and future polyglots: On October 27th the “2nd European language Day ” will be once more organized by the EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) members: British Council, the Embassy of Hungary, Goethe-­‐Institut, Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy of Spain, the Embassy of Italy and Wallonia-­‐Brussels Delegation, at Goethe-­‐Institut, to introduce the diversity of their national languages, promote multilingualism and address the benefits of Early Foreign Language Learning. 9:00am -­‐ 1:00pm : Conference on Early Foreign Language Learning – Chances and Challenges in Vietnam Target group of the conference are linguists and experts on language teaching. Four speakers will give presentations followed by a question and answer session. Professor Hung Nguyen from the MoET will talk about The Foreign Languages 2020 Project in Vietnam. Mr. John O'Rourke, representative of the British Council will present a short lecture on Motivating Learners, Ms. Widlok, Goethe-­‐Institute Munich, Germany, will speak on Early Foreign Language Learning – Current Tendencies and Ms. Mariage representative of Wallonie-­‐Bruxelles, Belgium, will discuss The case of Vietnamese students studying French at the Hanoi University and give some reflections on teaching of French to Vietnamese learners. The lectures shall be simultaneously translated into Vietnamese. 2:00pm – 6:00pm: Festival of European Languages The second half of the Day of European Languages is targeting children and parents interested in languages and culture. At the Festival of European Languages representatives of the participating institutions will present their respective languages and countries. 30-­‐minute sessions in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Hungarian will be offered to everybody interested. Posters, books and brochures will not only excite curiosity for European languages but also for the different countries and cultures. Additionally short films from the participating countries shall be screened at Goethe-­‐Institut´s exhibition hall. Visitors thus have the opportunity to get a sample of several language courses, to learn their first words in a new language and to gain an impression of the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe. Apart from representing the diversity of European languages and cultures this event will address the challenges and chances in the context of early foreign languages learning. More than this there will be a special focus on motivation and teaching skills. Early foreign languages learning is a topic which gained importance in the last years when communication became more global and easier than ever before. Those who learn to speak a second and third language in addition to their mother tongue will definitly benefit from this advantage in economic and business relations with Europeans. This might well be an important factor, especially for an exporting nation like Vietnam. There will be special events in all languages, for example, language sampler courses, songs and games. Simultaneously short films shall be screened at Goethe-­‐Institut´s exhibition hall. *All lectures will be simultaneously translated into Vietnamese.
