News From Andy’s
On Thursday, October 24, 2013, St. Andrew’s Health Center hosted
its Third Annual Women’s Wellness Expo. The event was made possible through the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
Digital Mammography Grant. St. Andrew’s Health Center accepted
the grant in January 2011, and fully implemented the digital mammography equipment by March 2011. The event was held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month to heighten awareness of the disease. Women in the United States get breast cancer
more than any other type of cancer, except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women. The
Woman’s Wellness Event went from 4:30 p.m.— 8:00 p.m. and
hosted around 100 women from the area.
For the event, the Bottineau Volunteer Ambulance graciously let us
use their beautiful facility. We offered many door prizes, including two designer COACH purses, along with free appetizers
and refreshments to all those in attendance. We also invited vendors to join us by showcasing their products for the public
to buy. Our vendors included; Cookie Lee, Signature HomeStyles, Thirty-One, Mary Kay, Accents by Janie, Clear Path
Wellness, LLC, Norwex, Pink Zebra, Bodies in Knead and Rugs by Hazel Romsos.
We also had two presenters for the evening,
Cheryl Sartain, CNS, who represented the Rural
Mental Health Consortium presented on stress
and depression in women. Dr. Jessica Skjolden,
medical provider at St. Andrew’s Health Center,
concluded the presentations. She talked about the
changes in pap smear screening guidelines and
the rationale behind them. She also provide information and insight on the Human Papillomavirus
(HPV) vaccine.
St. Andrew’s Health Center uses the Women’s
Wellness Expo to promote and educate women
on how to lead a healthy lifestyle through different preventative screenings/programs.
St. Andrew’s Health Center would like to thank Dr.
Amit Kulkarni for his 6+ years of providing medical
service to the Bottineau Community! We wish him and
his family the very best in their future endeavors. A
farewell open house will be held December 20th from
2:00 p.m.—3:30 p.m. at the Health Center.

“100 Years Caring Hands Healing Generations” was the theme of our 100th celebration of St. Andrew’s Health Center. For the past 100 years, the Sisters of Mary of the
Presentation have been serving the healthcare needs in Bottineau and the surrounding
areas. To work in the various areas of healthcare is truly a noble profession and many
caring hands have reached out in healing compassion over these generations.
Throughout the past 100 years, many changes have taken place in the world, in
healthcare, technology, etc., the list goes on, but in spite of these rapid and sometimes
drastic changes, the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation have remained dedicated to
serving the healthcare needs of the people. However, we cannot do this alone and we
are grateful to all who have devoted their energies to helping the sick and vulnerable
find comfort by your loving and skilled care.
It is an honor to celebrate this 100th anniversary, as we remember those who began
this good work. They believed that “nothing is impossible with God.” Many times
there was lack of funds, no business plan, no strategic planning, but there was faith.
That same faith exists today in those who serve in this ministry, as we face the many
challenges of being a Catholic healthcare facility.
We, the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, are grateful for your past support and cooperation. As we move into the next 100 years may we continue to serve with “caring
hands healing future generations.”
Sincerely in Christ,
Sr. Carol Jean Kuntz

ER Expansion Project!
News From Andy’s
We are asking for your assistance in helping St. Andrew’s Health Center renovate
our Emergency Room!
We received approval from the ND Department of Health to renovate our ER. The
renovations include updating our current ER from 2-beds to 4-beds. We have seen a 33%
increase in ER use, since 2010. Oil activity in Bottineau county is slated to reach 2,000 - 2,500
wells being drilled beginning in 2014. We are already seeing patient spillover due to oil
impact, which is referenced on an oil impact map provided in a study completed by Himle,
Rapp and Company titled “Pushing the Limits, The Impact of the Oil Boom in Healthcare in
Western North Dakota.”
By increasing our current bed capacity, we will be able to accommodate patients who utilize
our services. On multiple occasions, our medical staff has had to manage three to five patients
by utilizing space in our extended ER. Having increased space, will improve the health of our
patients by providing them easier access to an available bed in emergency situations. Having
increased access for patients to be seen on an available bed will positively affect patients
presenting to the ER, as we will ultimately have the capacity to accommodate patients seeking
emergency services.
After the ER renovation is complete, St. Andrew’s will be able to offer services in a state-ofthe-art ER. We have received personal donations and grant funding, with the intent to apply
for more funding. We are asking for your generosity and support to help raise $100,000 needed
to complete the $300,000 renovation project!

A Note From the Administrator:
Greetings from St. Andrew’s Health Center! Fall is a season of change. We have many changes taking place at
St. Andrew’s Health Center and Clinic.
Emergency Room (ER) renovation! We will be moving forward with the renovation of our emergency room.
We currently have a 2-bed ER with around 500 square feet. We will be expanding to a 4-bed ER with around
900 square feet. Since 2010, we have had substantial growth in ER utilization with roughly 450 more visits per
year.
The cost of the project is approximately $300,000. We will be conducting a capital campaign to help offset the
cost associated with the project and appreciate your support!
We have been working on migrating to a new version of our electronic medical record (EMR). The team at St. Andrew’s has been
working and training tirelessly on the build. We are currently in the middle of Stage 2 for meeting the guidelines as a meaningful user in
order to qualify for reimbursement incentives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
We also continue to work on meeting the needs that were identified through the community needs assessment that was conducted in July
2012. Education was one area we have focused on during the past year. We have provided education to service groups on cardiac care,
stroke prevention, ergonomic techniques, infection control, decontamination procedures and women’s wellness topics. We are available
to provide education for any group. We also utilize Healthbeat articles to provide additional education. Please contact (701)228-9319 for
an educational speaker request.
We are recruiting a physician, as Dr. Amit Kulkarni will be leaving St. Andrew’s and our community at the end of December. We wish
him and his family the very best. Our current providers are Dr. Jessica Skjolden, Brenda Koch, NP and Tracy Larson, NP who work fulltime in the clinic. Dr. Ken Kihle works one day per week, with Dr. Hamilton filling in periodically for the clinic too.
Our Foundation is preparing for the Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 2 p.m.
Consider making a donation in honor or memory of a loved one.
Thank you for your continued support and we wish you all a Happy Holiday Season!
