SAINTS SHOUT!
FAVORITE FALCONS
2008-2009 Issue 4
Every year since the falcon program‘s inception in 1997, Mrs. Terry
Pinamonti has taught her 1st grade class about the peregrine falcons, their
nesting box in Harrisburg, and how they almost became extinct. Her class
learns about Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring, and how it's important to care
for the birds and the earth or there won't be any birds singing in the spring. The
children in 1B observe the peregrine falcons in their nesting box on the Rachel
Carson Building, via the Internet, from the time they begin to lay their eggs until
the young falcons are ready to take flight. When the eggs hatch the students are
always very excited. It is amazing to see how big the baby birds get in just a
few short weeks. This year, the peregrine falcon had five eggs and, for the first
time ever, all five eggs hatched! Each year, classes are invited to come to the
PA Dept. of Environmental Protection at the Rachel Carson Building to observe
the banding of the birds. Mrs. Pinamonti has sent her name in every year, but
never received a response. This year, for the first time, her class was invited to
attend! The Peregrine Falcon Banding
Event at the end of May is held in the
auditorium of the Rachel Carson Building.
Broadcast live on Channel 49 and on the
worldwide web, this event is a wonderful
opportunity for the students to see the next
generation of Rachel Carson peregrine
falcons prepare for flight. A day to
remember!

Dear Mrs. Pinamonti and Class,
Hearing from you always means two things. One,
we will get a nice donation of eyeglasses and, two,
warm weather will be here soon!
Thank you so much for your donation. I am always
impressed by your hard work to collect these eyeglasses.
Putting your project on the school sign is a very good
idea and it was nice to see your faces in the photos you
sent.
Your donation will make a very big difference to
those who cannot see clearly. Not being able to see
clearly is very uncomfortable and eyeglasses take away
that discomfort to people of all ages especially school
kids.
Everything we do can make a difference to others. I
hope you feel good about giving comfort to others and I
hope you continue to do good works. It does not matter
about the size of the work because I have added your
eyeglass donation to the other donations and now it is
part of something so big it must be moved to the Lion’s
Club.
Mr. Musselman and I are planning to visit one of
the Lions Club’s buildings to see where the eyeglasses
go. I will let you know what we learn.
Thanks again for being part of
something big.

A SPECIAL GIFT FOR MOTHERS
During the first week of May, every year for many years,
Mrs. Vicki Krone visits the students in 1st grade to teach
them how to make rosaries. She provides all of the
materials, as well as pamphlets with prayers and beautiful
cards with Mary's recipe for the rosary. The day after the
rosaries were made this year, Father Michael
McFadden, our Pastor, came in to visit with Mrs.
Jacqueline Lenig’s and Mrs. Terry Pinamonti’s classes
and to bless the rosaries. The children enjoyed his visit
and always enjoy making the rosaries for their mothers
for Mother's Day. It is a beautiful way to honor Mary,
our mother, and all mothers. Thank you, Mrs. Krone, for
your generosity and for making this special gift happen
each year!
HELP WANTED – The PTO is looking for two funloving and highly motivated people to co-Chair the

ONE IN THE LORD
A BIT OF NIGHT MUSIC
In May, the 2nd graders celebrated their First Communion
at St. Theresa Parish. For this very special day, families
chose either the large group mass or one of the Sunday
masses throughout May. All of the students, under the
guidance of Mrs. Janice Costello, Mrs. Susan Moser,
and Miss Angela Roos, did a wonderful job and will
remember this day. Welcome to the Table of the Lord:

On a May evening, the STS Music Department presented
their annual Spring Concert under the direction of Mrs.
BJ Meagher. The concert included the St. Theresa
Band, Jazz Band, 3rd and 4th Grade Choir and the 5th
through 8th Grade Choir. The band started things off
with Superheroes Are Us featuring familiar theme songs
for Superman, Batman, James Bond and Austin Powers.
The full band played two more selections, Affirmation
and Sea to Shinning Sea, and the After Hours Band was
featured playing Amber Moon and Midnight Escape that
were more challenging. The Jazz Band played two
selections, I Bossa You and, an audience favorite, Milo on
the Midway. Students are encouraged to play improvised
solos. Matthew Gregoire, Daniel Delaney, Pauline
Matthew and Erin Meagher all played solos. In
addition to Mrs. Meagher, Mrs. Lisa Delaney is an
instrument instructor and directs the band for selected
songs.

The choir portion of the evening began with the 3rd and
4th Grade Choir singing I Love the Music. The 5th
through 8th grade choir sang a memory evoking Aquarius
and a beautiful rendition of Friends. Mr. Ed Smith
accompanied the choirs. Claire McCarthy was the
student accompanist. The Choirs combined for two final
selections, The Little Mermaid Medley and
Tuimbe. Tuimbe, an African song that is sung in two
different languages, had the students sing of their love for
music. That love for music was evident in the students
and shared by all who attended the program. Thank you
to all the parents and friends who support music in our
school. Thank you, Mrs. Meagher, for inspiring our love
for STS music.
GREAT YEAR…BROWNIE TROOP 690
By Mrs. Pam Zemaitis
The STS Brownie Troop 690 had quite a productive year. Since our troop is made up of all 3rd graders, we decided to do
some projects that would benefit others. At the end of 2008, our troop wrote a letter to STS about ways to improve a
couple of things the girls thought needed to be changed. One suggestion was to label the condiments since some of them
had used hot sauce instead of ketchup one day. Another idea was to put signs by the water fountains asking people not
to put their mouths on the fountain which will help to keep germs from spreading. Mr. Michael Tracy, STS Principal,
liked the idea and even allowed the troop to make the yellow signs that you now see in the school. We also created a
larger sign for the Lost and Found which is now posted by the lost and found. To finish out the year, our troop put together a skit about nutrition and the importance of eating right and exercising. The girls were healthy foods, with the
exception of one who was a brownie, and dressed like their parts. We acted out the skit one day for the STS Daycare
and they loved it. The girls had also prepared a game, a craft and some healthy snacks. Not only was it fun but it was
educational too. We are very proud of what they have accomplished this year.

CIVIL WAR LESSONS
Project time in 5A--Mrs. Rhonda Houseman passed out
her traditional Civil War project, prompting students to
make time lines, produce power points, write historical
fiction stories, and create newspapers. The students and
their families were urged to work together to research and
design the projects. Mrs. Houseman was very impressed
with many of the completed projects. She said, "The
students and parents did an incredible job. The best way
for our children to learn how to research is to watch
others do it. When parents model these habits, the
students learn by leaps and bounds." However, did Mrs.
Houseman learn anything new this year? You bet; she
learns something new every year. This year she found out
the names of the horses that some of the generals rode
during the war and that some of the slang in use today
was developed during this time period.
AND THE WINNER IS?
GRYFFINDOR! Mrs. Rhonda Houseman’s 5A read
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The class was
divided into the four houses--Gryffindor, Ravenclaw,
Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. Each house earned points for
behavior, complete work, little acts of kindness, helpfulness, and competitions. It was a close race this year and
it wasn't decided until the last day. The Gryffindor
House of Alan Andrezeski, Morgan Beatty, Nick Fanning, Anna Rose Smith, and Cole Zimmerman finished as the winners. Everyone had to admit that they
had a great time reading and working in groups. On May
21, the class celebrated Gryffindor's victory with a House
Cup Party. The students chose their own chocolate
magic wand, feasted on Peter Pettigrew Fingers, swallowed a slimy octopus, tasted Snape's Dragon Snot, tried
Butterbeer, and many other "deliciously spooky" treats.
STATIONS BRING NEW PERSPECTIVE
Lent is a time of fasting and sacrifice. The students in 5A
learned about the sacrifice of Jesus by twice presenting
the Stations of the Cross for the school during the Lenten
season. Mrs. Rhonda Houseman wrote both of the Stations that were presented. For the first one, the students
watched as 5A presented posters as Jesus stood at the
altar. The second Stations were acted out. Students
couldn't understand how Jesus carried his heavy
cross. The one that they used wasn't nearly as heavy but
it was difficult to carry. Mrs. Houseman believes that her
students learn a great deal about Jesus' suffering and
death by experiencing just a little of what He went
through.
On May 20, Matt Bates, STS alumnus, presented a Civil
War lesson to the 5th grade students. Mrs. Rhonda
Houseman is always delighted when Matt comes dressed
in his Civil War uniform. The students were treated to
information given by an "actual" Union soldier, a tour of
an encampment, and the opportunity to see articles that
were used during the Civil War. This is a terrific prelude
to the Gettysburg field trip and a super culmination to the
Civil War unit.
In May, the 5th grade took their annual field trip to
Gettysburg. Mrs. Rhonda Houseman, Mrs. Vikki
DeBastiani, and Mrs. Lynn Kaufold planned an exciting
day starting at the Visitor Center, then taking a doubledecker bus tour of the battlefield. From there it was off to
lunch at General Pickett's Buffet, yummy! The day
culminated with the Civil War National Museum where
the students learned about the times before, during, and
after the Civil War. The tour ended with the reenactment
of the Battle of Gettysburg. Everyone had a great time
being with friends and learning about our past.

CHECKERS ANYONE?
At press time, 5A was holding their annual 5A Checker's
Tournament and the field had narrowed down to Derek
Ford, Caroline Hills, Zach Sowa, and Hannah Deppen.
Each player brings something special to their play. Who
will win . . . the adventurer, the thinker, the strategizer,
or the calm, cool player? It's anyone's guess!

WE HONOR MARY, OUR
MOTHER
On May 1, all the schools of the
diocese honored our Blessed
Mother with a dedication that
included a May Crowning and
Living
Rosary
in
the
Church. This ceremony is one
of the highlights of the 8th grade
year. The 8th grade boys and
girls offered a sunflower, their
class flower, to Mary. The
boys then formed an honor
guard for the girls to walk
down the aisle to crown Mary Queen of Heaven and
Earth. Kaitlyn Anderson crowned Mary and Kaitlin
Laman served as her attendant. Eighth grade students
led school students and the adults present in the Litany of
the Blessed Mother and read several readings about
Mary's life on Earth.
STS NHD MILESTONE
Christina Williams, placed 2nd in the National History
Day State Competition at Millersville University in May
and will go to the National Competition in June as one of
two representatives for the Junior Historical Paper
Division. Christina, the first STS student to reach the
national level, devoted much time and effort to
researching and revising her paper on Rosa Parks through
all stages of NHD competition. The faculty, staff and
students are proud to have her represent STS and
Pennsylvania. Congratulations and good luck, Christina!
STEM WORKSHOP
After Mary was crowned Queen, students representing
grades 3 through 7 formed a living rosary around the altar
and led the school in a rosary dedicated to Peace, a
tradition at STS for over 30 years. After each prayer, the
student reciting the prayer was given a rose. With St.
Theresa of the Little Flower as STS patroness, the
prayers and roses provided a meaningful and beautiful
service. Mrs. Rhonda Houseman and Mrs. Lynn
Kaufold coordinated this awesome way to honor Jesus'
Mother and to ask her to bring peace to our suffering
world. The fact that diocesan schools are all doing the
same thing on this day makes it even more beautiful.
The 7th grade girls were invited to attend Pathways to
Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers hosted by Penn
State York. The 7th grade girls were asked to write an
essay if they wanted to be considered to attend the STEM
Workshop which encourages girls to pursue a career in
Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics
(STEM). Women who work in the STEM field presented
hands-on workshops about their field. The students,
Daniella Bosak, Kasey Dare, Reagan Devine, Indra
Jimenez, Taylor Montefour, Elizabeth Mueller,
Megan Reuscher, and Natalie Weaver, were
accompanied by Mrs. Michelle Banks and Ms. Rachel
Allen. The sessions were interesting and the girls learned
while exploring career options and interacting with
professionals from STEM and related fields.
STUDENT COUNCIL FINAL UPDATE
FOOD FOR THE COURSE
Mrs. Lucy Chubb reports that 7th grade Social Studies
students are winding up their study of Latin America by
exploring interesting foods from Central and South
America. The students have been reporting on the
country from which they have chosen their foods and
sharing information about the governments, culture and
topography. The final unit of the year will cover Asia
and will include mapping, discussing the differences in
cultures, and creating some new Asian dishes to enhance
learning. The last project of the year will discuss family
heritage. The students will create favorite family dishes,
identify the country of origin, and report on that country
to further the exchange of cultural knowledge.
By Jack Shelly and Colin Laubach
The 2008-09 school year has come to an end and Student
Council has been active up to the very last days. We held
an end-of-year social for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. We
are giving a gift to the school, though it is a surprise as to
what it is going to be. New Student Council officers
were elected on May 21st. This year‘s officers and
representatives will miss organizing the dances and the
three-on-three basketball tournament, running the
recycling program, working to improve our school, and
the many other things we were involved in. We would
like to thank Mrs. Michelle Banks for her continuous
guidance. We wish everyone a safe and happy summer
and a great 2009-10 school year. Thank you for a
wonderful year!

The 8th grade is working on the Cold War, the Korean
Conflict and the Vietnam War. They are creating lessons
and trying their hand at teaching. They are incorporating
music, personal stories and American culture into their
lessons. They will also be researching the 1950s in
America. Music, movies, home life and, of course,
casseroles are playing a big part in the classroom to
answer the question, "What was it like to live in the 50s?"

3-ON-3 TOURNAMENT
THE 8TH GRADE SAYS GOODBYE
By Mrs. Michelle Banks
The Student Council hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for
the 7th and 8th grade students. The teams competed in two
divisions. A big thank you to Mr. Mark Cicak, Olivia Alford,
Erica Rowe, and Trevor Alford for volunteering to referee the
games and to Mrs. Ann Spishock for running the concession
stand. Thank you to all the student helpers: Jack Shelly, Kelly
Leisenring, Kelsey Pianka, Jacki Winieski, and Alex
Failla. We could not have had this event without your help!
By A.J. Sowa
It‘s the end of the year again and the 8th grade will be leaving.
As they all say good-bye for the last time to their teachers and
friends at STS, they are looking forward to high school and
beyond. Although some may be relieved that the school year is
finally over, myself included, others like the 8 th grade will be
sad, for this will be the last time they will see STS as students.
We will lose friends but gain new ones because as the 8 th grade
leaves, we will get new preschoolers, and all the students will
move to the next grade and will get new teachers. I doubt the
8th grade will miss
everything, but I am sure
they will miss most.

8TH GRADE FIELD TRIP
MY MAREVELOUS MEMORIES
Forty-eight 8th grade students and teachers travelled to
Pittsburgh on April 24 for their field trip. This has proven to be
an awesome trip for past classes and chaperones. To share in
this last field trip with their child, there were 28 parents joining
the class. The students visited Heinz Field, the home of the
Steelers. At the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of
Learning, they enjoyed several rooms decorated in the fashion
of different nations of the world. They were amazed at the
beautiful stained glass windows and other architecture of Heinz
Chapel. Duquesne Incline demonstrated the method of
transportation for the people of Pittsburgh to travel between the
upper level of the city and the business section. The Carnegie
Science Center offered many hands-on exhibits where the 8th
graders learned about different facets of science and were able
to tour a World War II submarine, the USS Requin. The party
dined on delicious Italian fare at The Spaghetti Warehouse in
the Strip District and finished their day with an IMAX film,
Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk at the Science
Center. The students left STS at 5 a.m. and returned home at
around 11:45 p.m. Everyone was exhausted and ready for
bed. But the day was beautiful and filled with fun and learning
for all.

Ah, the time has come. All of us 8th graders are moving on to
Trinity, Cedar Cliff, Red Land, East Pennsboro, Cumberland
Valley or another high school. We are expected to not only
meet new friends, but also, more importantly, continue the
education which we have started at our very own Saint
Theresa‘s. I, myself, have spent over 1,600 days at STS; that‘s
a lot of my life‘s education so far. And, although I have not
been alive long, I find it hard to believe that you can just forget
all your Saint Theresa‘s memories, whether it is Jack Shelly
finding a worm in his hair this year, or longer ago, the 5 th grade
Valentine‘s Day Dance in Mrs. Rhonda Houseman’s
classroom. Yes, I even remember the good old days with Mrs.
Marie Carr and Mrs. Marisa Wegrzyniak in afternoon
kindergarten; that‘s where I started my STS career, and where I
met my best friend, Josh Musselman. I could go on about
Saint Theresa‘s and how it‘s sad to leave or tell more of my
marvelous memories, but I‘d rather leave some advice to the
younger Saints like, ―Don‘t get the teachers angry,‖ from
Michael Wilson and ―Try your best,‖ from Colin Laubach,
both going to Trinity next year. And to all the 7 th grade Saints,
soon to become 8th graders, it‘s your time to rule the school!

TRACK TEAM ENDS SEASON IN TOP FORM
2009 SGE SUCCESS
The Saints Track & Field team closed out the season with a
great showing at the All League meet on May 17th that
included three record-setting performances, a haul of 38
medals, and performances from all four squads that literally
turned heads. With the smallest squad (four girls) in the field
of ten schools, Varsity Girls placed highly in many events, and
took 9th place. Varsity Boys took 8th with many great
performances. The JV Girls took 3 rd overall and the JV Boys
came in 4th in a close field.
By Mr. Mark Reilly
On behalf of the Simply Grand Event Committee, thank you
for your contribution to this year‘s Event. Together, we raised
over $40,000, exceeding our budget by more than $5,000! We
hope everyone had a wonderful time. We appreciate your
support and look forward to making next year‘s event even
better. We are truly blessed to have so many committed
parents, teachers and friends. Please remember those who
sponsored this year‘s event. Make an effort to support those
who support you!

PTO NEWS YOU CAN USE
By Ms. Danielle Tedesco
Thank you for a great year! The PTO is looking forward to the
2009-2010 school year with our first meeting to be held in midAugust. Also note that our Fall Uniform Exchange will be held
in August. Look for announcements in the Parish Bulletin and
School website for the times and dates. Two recent decisions
by the PTO were to use the points earned from the Campbell‘s
Labels for Education (labelsforeducation.com/program) to
fund equipment for the physical education classes and to use
the Karns receipts earnings to support the swimming program
for STS students. Have a relaxing summer!
At least one rival coach was impressed with the team‘s
performance, noting after the meet that St. Theresa is a ‗…
program on the rise.‘ The All League meet capped a great
season for all four squads. The JV Boys lost just one meet and
finished in 2nd place in their division. The Varsity Girls
finished in 2nd place for the season in their division. The JV
Girls finished in 3rd place and the Varsity Boys finished in 4 th
place with a winning 5 and 3 record.
