Greetings!
After you take time to smell the flowers, go out and sculpt something! We look forward to
seeing you at our upcoming meeting(s); please feel free to bring guests and attend as a guest
if you are not a current member. Please join us at our May 3rd, 10 am meeting at the Douglas
Van Howd Studio, located at 13333 New Airport Road, Auburn, Ca. This studio tour hosts our
own internationally acclaimed artist and sculptor, creating large public art statues in front of the
world's most visited cities by the world's most influential leaders. As newsletter editor, I look forward to including all pertinent information about your shows,

Douglas Van Howd Studio Tour, May 3rd, 10 am
Join us with Douglas Van Howd, May 3rd at 10am, at 13333
New Airport Road, Auburn, Ca. Nevada born sculptor and
painter, has become well­known worldwide for his wildlife and
western creations. He received his advanced art education at
the highly acclaimed Art Center School in Southern California,
where he began to develop his exquisite lifelike detailed style
that enhances the grace and movement he captures in his
work. This trademark has brought him to a place of honor in
his field and his works are found in collections worldwide.
Doug Van Howd has been commissioned to do work for heads
of countries. His oil painting of Yellowstone Falls was presented to the Queen of the
Netherlands during the Netherlands­American Bicentennial celebrations in Washington DC. He
has twice been received as a guest of the government of Taiwan to present his works to
President Chiang Ching­Kuo and President Lee Teng­hui. His bald eagle "Masters of the Wind"
is displayed in the office of the Secretary of the Interior, Washington DC, his portrait of Attorney
General Edwin Meece hangs in the Hall of Justice, and his well­known "Friends of Freedom"
bronze sculpture, after many years in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, has a new
home in the Reagan Library.
The United Auburn Indian Community and Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, CA, have many of
Doug's sculptures to be seen on their grounds, maybe you have already seen them. To find

Johans Stafford, PAL artist, will be on display at Pescatore Winery, 7055 Ridge Rd, Newcastle, April 5th ­ December 31st, and a
Featured Artist at St Luke's Episcopal Church, 124 Orange St, Auburn, on June 11th. Please stop by and see her latest celebrated
work.
Auburn Art Walk is currently taking applications to participate in their 1st Friday Art Walk happening in downtown Auburn every two
months from April, June, August, & October. This is a great opportunity for public exposure and to support our local merchants, and it's

Spring Exhibitions Near and Far
Andy Warhol: Portraits on display at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. The exhibit hosts over
168 portraits from Andy Warhol, now through June 19, 2016. The exhibit was organized by the Andy
Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. It is the first exhibit of Andy Warhol's for the museum and not to be

4th Annual America's ClayFest competition, in partnership with the Art League of Lincoln and the Blue
Line Arts, the exhibit will kick off its fourth annual with entries expected from all over the United States,
Canada, Europe, Mexico and Asia. 80 pieces will be on display. We have a height limit of 94 inches
and weight limit, please see website for more info. This year we are honored to have as jurors
internationally known ceramic artist Sergei Isupov and New York ceramic arts dealer Leslie Ferrin.

Aqua Vistas 2016, The second annual Aqua Vistas at the General Gomaz Art Center, is an art show which celebrates the life of water.
The show intends to exhibit the spirit and essence of water and the activities surrounding water through art. The show will run

2016 Open Studios Exhibition
at ARTspace, 240 Fifth St. in Hollister, held by the San Benito County Arts Council. The exhibition features the work of 21 Open Studios
artists, including works in painting, pottery, photography, glasswork and more. The 2­day event is from 10 am­ 4 pm, Saturday
& Sunday, April 23rd & 24th, which takes place at artists' studios throughout San Benito County. A map of the artists' studios & the artist

2016 North Auburn Art Studios Tour, continues the Mother's Day tour up the hill with another group of talented artists in Auburn, Ca.

Patina Finishing Class will be held at the Clay Arts Studio, Saturday, June 11th, 9:AM to 2:00PM. The cost is $25.00 per student
(materials extra). Jim Lee will be giving instructions on how to fill and fix cracks and applying patinas (paint and wax) to your sculptures.
It will take a couple of hours to complete your project. Please RSVP directly for a complete list of supplies needed for the class. One

Calls to Artists
North America Clay Challenge, This international event is scheduled for September 1 ­ October 2 at the General Gomez Arts and
Event Center in the historic California Sierra Nevada foothills city of Auburn. This juried clay show celebrates visionary artists from
around the world with only 100 entries allowed in the Exposition. Competition categories include: Figurative Sculpture, Sculpture,
Functional (Thrown), and Tile (wall hanging). Online applications will be accepted beginning April 1, 2016. More than $25,000 in cash

Light Play, Today, light is being used in more experimental and inspiring ways. Light Play asks artists to create work that lets the light be
the main point of interest. Painting, drawing, photography, installation, and sculpture will all be considered for this exhibit. Deadline for

Cordova Community Council, MURAL PROPOSALS WANTED! The City of Rancho Cordova is requesting proposals from talented
artists to add a mural to a new wall in the City of Rancho Cordova. The new mural will add beauty and a sense of place along the busy
Folsom Boulevard corridor and would be seen by thousands of people that walk or drive by. We are looking for a visionary artist to
create a piece that will become a part of Rancho Cordova history. Complete proposal must be received by Travis Evans at the City of

2016 Lily Tomlin Art Call For National Artists, Fe Gallery's Unauthorized/Unofficial Lily Tomlin Art Show. Fe Gallery invites all
local, and national artists, professional and amateur and multiple art mediums for this call for art. THEME: An original interpretation of

14th annual Sierra Art Trails Open Studio Tour is underway, May 1, 2016 is the deadline! The application can be downloaded from
our website at http://www.sierraarttrails.org/submission_guidelines.htm. The exhibit is the largest art event in our area, showcasing over
100 artists working in a wide range of media,encompassing more than a dozen communities in Madera and Mariposa counties. Cost of
participation is $135, with a $25 non­refundable jury fee and $110 participation fee due upon acceptance into the exhibit.
Fire Station Public Art Projects (2), Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Committee (SMAC) invites artists and artist teams to apply for one
or both of the following public art projects: Fire Station 14 located at 1400 N. B Street and Fire Station 15 located at 1640 W. El Camino
Avenue. Project budget is $62,900 for each fire station, including design, fabrication and installation. Deadline to apply is May 2, 2016. Click here for more information and to apply.

4th Annual 2016 Open Fine Art Competition, hosted by the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center. The public is invited to the free reception

23rd Annual Placer Arts Studio Tour, Calling all members of PlacerArts. Artists must complete the Online Application, deadline is May
8, 2016, tour dates are November 11th, 12th & 13th, 2016. PlacerArts staff is available to help with the online submission process if
needed, and artists will be asked to supply three digital images of their studio and three to five digital images of their work in the

Blooming II Art Show, the second annual show which was highly popular with both artists and collectors last year. Blooming celebrates
flowers, the garden, and all things that bloom. The show intends to exhibit the spirit and beauty of the plant kingdom. The show will run
from May 20 through June 18th, 2016 at the General Gomez Arts & Events Center. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 20,
2016 from 5 ­ 7 pm. Artists are invited to submit their work for inclusion in this juried show. All media ­­ both 2D and 3D ­­ are acceptable

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the fourth round of proposals for visual artists from
the Leff­Davis Fund for Visual Artists will open on April 4th! This fund, the only one of its kind in the greater Sacramento region, will
offer professional artists the opportunity to explore, create, and enhance their work in a variety of artistic media. Visual artists serve a
unique role by contributing to our community's civic and cultural life. The Leff­Davis Fund was created to help support professional artists
financially, so that they might have the opportunity to devote their time to creating art and developing their work. An award of up to
$10,000 will be made over a period of one year to professional artists in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer and Nevada counties. For more

Utility Box Wrap Public Art Project, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) invites artists and artist teams to apply for an
ongoing utility box wrap public art project. Over the next two years dozens of artists will be paid for the use of their artwork on utility
boxes throughout Sacramento County. Must be 21 years or older to apply. Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium for their
designs. Deadline to apply is May 16, 2016. Click here for more information and to apply. 11TH National Juried Exhibition for National Artists. Axis Gallery is pleased to have Gregory Volk as juror for the 11th National
Juried Exhibition. Gregory Volk is a New York­based art writer, independent curator, and frequent lecturer. He writes regularly for Art in
America, where he is a contributing editor, and his articles and reviews have also appeared in many other publications,
including Parkett and Sculpture. Gregory Volk received his BA from Colgate University and his MA from Columbia University. He is also
an associate professor in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. All artist working in contemporary original 2D and
3D work in any media are encouraged to apply. Along with the exhibition of all the accepted work there will be cash awards, an exhibition

Art at the Classic, a top­ranked equine and western art show held at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, a world­class art
show featuring more than 120 works by painters, sculptors, photographers, and other fine artists. The juried show is open to all artists
over 18 years of age whose work reflects a western way of life and includes any equine subject, western landscape or wildlife. Entries
must be artist's original design, produced in the last three years, and not previously shown in Art at the Classic. Classes include oil,
acrylic, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink, graphic and charcoal, colored pencil, photography, sculpture, miniatures, and anything goes.

3rd Incline Village Fine Art Festival will be held at Preston Field on August 13­14, 2016, in Incline Village NV (also known by the locals
as 'Income Village') at the North side of the Lake Tahoe area. A great location for an art festival! Great visibility from the road, and lots of
customer parking! The Incline Village Fine Art Festival will feature artists presenting their original work in all mediums of two and three
dimensional fine art, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolors, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and
wood. Each artist will be present to meet with the public and discuss their work. All work is available for purchase. In addition to fine art,
fine crafts will also be presented. Festival attendees will find blown glass, turned wood, semi­precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass, and

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is conducting a competition to select a design for the 2016/2017 California
Duck Stamp. Entries for the California Duck Stamp contest will be accepted from 9 a.m., May 13, 2016 through 4 p.m., June 13, 2016. Entries may be mailed, shipped or delivered in person to: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, 1416 Ninth Street, Room 1280,
Sacramento, CA 95814. The art should be protectively packaged, and the exterior of the package and all protective materials should be
clearly labeled with the artist's name to ensure proper repackaging. The primary subject of this California Duck Stamp will be the lesser

mark your calendar for these dates! Please consider attending the steering committee meetings as well­ we need your input and would
welcome you on the leadership team. Steering committee meetings are held the 3rd Monday of the month, at 1pm, at the Newcastle Packing Shed Artists Studio, at 455 Main
