August 2013 Newsletter
School Opens on Monday, August 26, 2013 More information on page 2! Hartford High School Newsletter Vol. 24, No. 1 Parent Advisory Council Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the parent advisory council meetings from 6:30 - 8:00 PM on the following Thursday evenings: October 10 January 9 April 10 Freshmen Orientation Thursday, August 22 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM Report to the Main Entrance at Hartford High School Busing will be provided for Hartford and Hartland students for this event. Hartford buses will run their regular routes, but one hour later; Hartland students will be picked up at 8:00 at Hartland 4 Corners and at 8:05 at Hartland 3 Corners. A pizza lunch will be provided at the end of the session. Parking Permits An application for parking permits is located on page 11. Please read all of the parking information clearly as parking rules and regulations have changed due to impending construction starting in August. All students must show a valid driver's license in order to register a car. White River Junction, Vermont August, 2013 Message from the Principal Ordinarily my preference is to share thoughts on one particular topic with you. However, given the significant changes which are in-store for us in the fall, anticipating some pertinent questions and providing answers upfront might be valuable as the new school year approaches: Does it really matter if a student is late for or never attends the preBlock 1 advisory? Given the intents and purposes of an advisory program, everyone’s participation and contributions are valuable and essential to the overall success of the initiative. The expectation is that all students will be present to lend their thoughts and ideas, as well as experience the camaraderie and teambuilding that will develop over time. Therefore, attendance is given the same level of importance as a regular first block class has been attended in the past. What is the point of the mid-day “H-Block?” For many students— due to the fullness of their existing block-scheduled day and/or a variety of after-school commitments and obligations—the opportunity to get extra assistance with new homework, missed assignments, or difficult material has been hard to find. Now, there are fifty minutes built-in when every student can freely access assistance in all content areas. Why will freshmen be taking a full-year of language arts and mathematics? Block-scheduling was instituted at HHS almost twenty years ago. Much has changed in the world and in education since then. While this teaching format still has much to offer, that is not to argue that changes should not be considered. Given that the ninth grade year is such a fundamental building-block for success in the rest of high school and beyond, it is important that students are as well-grounded in basic skills as possible at the onset. What is the status of AP courses at HHS? Currently students may take AP-level studies in Calculus, Biology, English, Spanish, and French. In a year, we expect chemistry and physics to be available also. What is the status of technology at HHS? From the school board to the superintendent to the faculty, a grasp of the important role which technology needs to play in the educational process in order to prepare students for the world in which they will live and work is understood. Increasing the number of platforms available, enhancing the faculty’s skills to utilize technology in the classroom, and improving the students’ ability to apply technological resources appropriately and effectively are all among our goals. Surely other questions abound about the future of education at HHS. Some may be general and for the good of the order, while some may be more specific and personal. Whichever the case may be, please do not hesitate to call or make an appointment. Communication with Staff Please do not hesitate to call the school to talk to staff members or to make appointments to visit with them. Please communicate to your child's teachers any special circumstances which might affect his or her progress. Event Parking When attending HHS functions, particularly in the auditorium, please leave the "visitor parking" directly in the front of the building open for those whom walking any distance would be challenging. V OLU ME 2 4, I SSU E 1 H A R T F OR D H IG H S C H O O L NEW S LET TE R 2013 Musical This year HHS will be performing the musical "Footloose"! Based on the hit 1984 film of the same name, this high energy show will have you up on your feet dancing along. With familiar musical favorites such as "Almost Paradise" and "Let's Hear It For The Boy" this is an event you surely will not want to miss. The show will run November 14-16, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Auditions will be held on September 4, during the second week of school. The ninety-minute audition slots run from 3:30 until 9:00 PM, with callbacks taking place on September 5. This allows students wanting to audition to be able to work around other commitments. Many students play a fall sport as well as participating in the musical. Don’t hesitate to email Mr. Gattie if you would like more information on how this works. Students should stop by the music office on the first day of school to sign up for an audition time. You will need to bring a signed Student Contract to the audition. Information, contracts and audition materials will be available on the first day of school. Please contact Mr. Gattie with any questions. Email is the best way to make the initial contact: [email protected]. The Honors Program The Honors Program will begin its fourteenth year this fall. Freshmen will meet with Mr. Anton, the new program director, during orientation in September, and sophomores will attend a retreat at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in September as well. Juniors begin the process of selecting a research topic, and seniors will complete their theses in February. Freshmen have until October 1st to apply for admission to the program. Seniors were recognized for their achievements at graduation by wearing red and black stoles and having the title of their theses read as they stood at the podium. Victoria Dandurand received the Phillip DuTremble Award for her excellent thesis project and outstanding participation during her four years in the Honors Program. All Honors Program students are reminded that the summer is a great time to fulfill two of the Program’s requirements: community service and attending lectures. Mr. Anton may be contacted at [email protected] to answer any questions. Orientation for Freshmen Parents The administrative and guidance teams will sponsor an evening orientation session for the parents of freshmen on Thursday, September 19 at 6:00, immediately prior to the open house at 7:00. The purpose of this informal gettogether is to answer questions and/or address concerns that parents may have regarding procedures, expectations or opportunities for their child. While a few brief presentations will be made on specific topics germane to ninth graders, the overall intent of the evening is to be as wide-ranging and open-ended as parents want it to be to meet their needs. PAGE 3 Important Yearbook Announcement for Seniors and Parents Individual senior pictures and senior sayings for the yearbook are due by Friday, October 25. Make appointments early at picture studios as they often take months to deliver these photos. In addition to senior pictures and student sayings, students should turn in one baby picture to be used in the "Younger Years" section. Parents also have the choice to purchase personalized ads to show recognition of their accomplishments. They can include words of encouragement, congratulations, and pictures. Parent ads are also due on Friday, October 25. All pictures, sayings, and ads should be labeled with the student’s first and last name, and turned in along with payment to Robin Martin in the Main Office. If you have any questions call 295-8610. Project Graduation Hartford’s Project Graduation is an all-night, drug and alcohol-free graduation celebration that takes place at Hartford High the night of graduation. Parents and community members start planning for this party in the fall and meet once a month to coordinate the entertainment, prizes and activities for the graduating seniors. The Class of 2014 will mark the 26th year of this annual event. Parents of ALL grades are invited and encouraged to join us in our fun, year-long planning and fundraising efforts, not just when your child is a senior. If you do not recall your password protected accounts, or never activated your account, please email our registrar, Rena Burnett at [email protected]. Counseling Staff If you are a senior who has exhausted the curriculum offerings in a certain discipline at Hartford High School, you may be eligible to take a course at Dartmouth College this year....at no charge. Dartmouth's fall term begins September 16, 2013 and all registration forms are due no later than Friday, August 23 in the Dean's Office at the College. Please email Mr. Farnsworth ([email protected]) this summer or see your counselor after August 15 for more information. Your school counselor and department chair here at Hartford High School need to approve and sign the application form before it is accepted at Dartmouth. Do not delay! Dartmouth does not take kindly to missed deadlines and there are many steps to this process. This “looping counselor” position, now entering its sixth year, effectively allows the current eighth grade counselor at HMMS to join our freshmen for their first high school year in our building. Aside from our Hartland, Cornish and other tuitioning students, all other incoming ninth graders will see a familiar face in Mr. Eberhardt as they journey through the 2013-2014 school year. Welcome, Mr. Eberhardt! (His email at the high school will remain as it was: ([email protected].) Over the past month, many agencies have met together in an effort to understand the tragedies that occurred at the end of our school year. On July 1st, community members joined agency representatives for a discussion relative to adolescent suicide, depression, how to ask for help and how to provide hope in the midst of traumatic events. Those in attendance were appreciative of what was said, and courageous in what they shared as the first of several such meetings took place. Together, these agencies will partner with the school district to have additional evenings on topics that are of instrumental value to both our youth and their parents. Free Course at the Community College of Vermont Sophomores, juniors and seniors are encouraged to enroll in the “Introduction to College Studies” (ICS) course that meets at the Wilder campus of CCV one evening per week for thirteen weeks this fall: September 17 through December 10, 2013 from 3:45 - 5:45 pm.. Students who successfully complete ICS may apply for a voucher to take a free college course at CCV, any of the other state colleges, or any partnering school while they are still in high school or the summer immediately following their senior year. Find out more at www.gotocollegevt.org. Registration takes place entirely through CCV, but we encourage you to speak to your school counselor for assistance and completion of the course. HHS offers a half credit for completion of this course and the rising potential for “dual enrollment” courses during high school are enormous. From Kate Hughes Coordinator of Academic Services Community College of Vermont - Upper Valley Hartford Agencies create evenings of support for students and families The first of such meetings will be Monday September 16th and it will explore, amongst other things: Emotional Health & Well-Being. This community presentation and dialogue will begin at 6:30. Please mark your calendar for other evenings in our series which are tentatively scheduled for Monday October 16, Monday November 18, and Monday December 16th. At this printing, we are planning on all evenings taking place at the Hartford High School Auditorium from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. We welcome parents and community members throughout the district; childcare will be provided. As appropriate, students in our middle and high schools are welcome to come as well. We will advertise this on our town’s list serve, on our district website and our high school announcements. Topics for each evening came as a result of our July evening as well as those discussed throughout our network of professionals who support families and youth on a daily basis. These events are sponsored by MACC (multi-agency community council) whose mission as a group of community providers is to support area youth and their families. The extent to which spaces will be lost is at this time uncertain. It is there highly recommended that students obtain a parking sticker to insure a space. Tuesday, August 20, will be the time when seniors may sign up. Seniors should be aware that the number of spaces lost on campus may necessitate their parking temporarily in the BOR until the construction is completed. At the end of each day, an assessment will be made as to the number of spaces remaining. Sophomores should plan on arranging alternate transportation to school.
