Welcome to the 2012 Archdiocesan Festival
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our
students, teachers, staff, families and Great Big Events
personnel who are performing in and supporting this
magnificent production. Welcome also to the audiences
of 40,000 students, families, friends and guests, as well
as the thousands of students in our schools we could
not fit into the Sydney Entertainment Centre, but who are
experiencing a live feed of the performances into their
schools.
‘Tell Me a Story’ is not just about witnessing the quality of
the performing arts in our schools. It is also an occasion
for all involved in Sydney Catholic education to come
together and celebrate the achievements of a widely
recognised and outstanding school system.
The quality of performing arts in a school is an indicator
of the vibrancy of the education that takes place there.
What you are seeing here will reassure you that our
schools are in great shape!

CaSPA Comes Of Age!
Who would have imagined that a production of this
magnitude would be staged by CaSPA, given its humble
beginnings with volunteer students and teachers gathering
at McDonald College Strathfield on Sundays following the
success of Jubilee 2000?
With the support of our former Executive Director, Br Kelvin
Canavan and the passion and dedication of many people,
we can now boast a Performing Arts unit that provides
professional, high-quality services and support to every one
of our schools in Sydney.

Our Story...
On 17 March 2000, more than 93,000 students, teachers, support staff, parents,
Religious and clergy assembled at Stadium Australia, the home of the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games, for a 90-minute re-enactment of the Christian story in a production
performed by over 10,000 student musicians, actors and dancers.
This historic gathering was a
celebration by Sydney Catholic
schools to mark 2000 years since
the birth of Christ – Jubilee 2000.
This large-scale production
unearthed an incredible array of
talent among our students and
teachers. And from this group, a
team (CaSPA) evolved to foster
the performing arts in all our
schools.
CaSPA operates with a core team of Artistic Directors and Co-ordinators who
offer student ensemble programs, in-school support and mentoring, and teacher
professional development.
Over the past 12 years, CaSPA has produced many school, Regional and Archdiocesan events and festivals, including ‘Entertaining Angels’ in 2005. It was involved
in World Youth Day celebrations in 2008. And now it’s time for ‘Tell Me A Story’!
Thousands of students have had the opportunity to develop their skills and perform
with their peers through the CaSPA Program.

‘Over the Fence’
- Southern Region On the walls of caves in the Kimberly in Western Australia, amazing drawings have been
discovered. They appear to be images of extra-terrestrials. But who created these images
and why? Do they record the first-ever experiences of mankind? Are they our very first
attempts to communicate our thoughts in documented form? Stories are born from our
everyday close encounters. They grow from casual events, from ordinary people talking,
texting, connecting. From the Aboriginal song lines to the entries on Facebook, we all
have a story to share…

‘A Boy’s Own Adventure’
- Archdiocesan In 1849, two young Aboriginal boys, Conaci and Dirimera, went on an amazing journey
from their home in Western Australia to Rome, via the great capitals of Europe. Their
mentor, a Benedictine monk named Dom Salvado, aimed to educate them as priests and
then return them to Australia in the hope that they would then spread their learning and
religion among their own people. At first, the boys flourished, impressing all who met
them. But as time went on, their story took a different turn…
This dramatic re-enactment is loosely based on the book ‘The Grand Experiment’ by
Anouk Ride, published by Hachette Livre Australia (2007). CaSPA acknowledges the
support given by Aboriginal Elders, Elsie Heiss and Graeme Mundine.

‘Fairytale’
- Eastern Region Once upon a time in a land far, far away, lived a beautiful girl called Cinderella. In the
same town lived a big bad wolf, a wicked stepmother, some ugly sisters, a few fat pigs, a
shy prince, and a village full of happy peasants who filled the town with song, dance and
merriment. Yet Cinders longed for something more. Would she find her destiny by giving in
to a marriage with the wolf? Or would she need to be true to herself and reject the powers
of greed and desire in order to find her true happy-ever-after...?

‘You Are My Brother’
- Inner Western Region Based on research of actual case studies in Sudan, ‘An African Story’ tells of Ben, a
first-year university student, working on an assignment on Australia’s policy on asylum
seekers. He goes to the internet to find out some quick facts, and his eye is caught by
a link which tells of the experiences of Sudanese refugees fleeing the civil war in their
country and ultimately seeking asylum in Australia. Ben is particularly drawn to the story
of a Sudanese youth, Jeremiah, who is his exact contemporary. He reads Jeremiah’s story
with intense interest…

‘Year of Grace’
Stories throughout time have been characterised by the same features: heroes and
heroines; journeys undertaken; obstacles faced and overcome; lessons learned. And,
finally, in this Year of Grace, when we are called on to encounter Christ afresh, to
reflect on the Scriptures, to repent our faults and to listen to the voice of the Spirit, we
celebrate a story which combines these elements in a spiritual way to teach us the
greatest lesson of all: the power of Love, and, specifically, the transforming power Love
has when it sacrifices itself for the good of others.

Special Performances
MARK VINCENT
Mark’s own story remains a remarkable one. This
young man from Sutherland Shire started with
CaSPA and went on to win the third series of
‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2009.
His first album ‘My Dream’ (‘Mio Visione’) captured
the hearts of many, and then he delivered again
(with ‘Compass’) and again (with ‘The Great Tenor
Songbook’). He has appeared on stage alongside
Whitney Houston, Katherine Jenkins, The Priests
and Kate Ceberano. His star continues to rise
– indeed, it seems this is only the start of his
stratospheric ascent!
DANIEL O’CONNELL
Daniel has been involved with CaSPA since he was
in Year 7 and during this time has received many
outstanding opportunities to perform alongside
luminaries in the business. With CaSPA, Daniel
has travelled to America, starred as an angel in
‘Entertaining Angels’, was involved in several
events for World Youth Day, and has done many
performances around town. In 2010 Daniel received
the CaSPA scholarship to the Australian Institute of
Music, where he is currently completing a Bachelor
of Music majoring in Music Theatre.
Festival Musical Director/Arranger
JAMES LONG
James has been involved with CaSPA since Jubilee
2000, and in 2011 was appointed to the position of
Music Adviser. Previously, James was the Director
of Music at schools within the Archdiocese, most
recently at Santa Sabina College. He also worked as a
freelance composer, arranger and music producer.
An award-winning composer, James has written and
arranged music for a variety of events. He has written musicals for both schools and
professional communities and was the Music Adviser engaged by the producers Great
Big Events for the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government
Conference in Perth. James is now working on a new commission for Harp, scheduled
to premiere in September.

• A multi-purpose entertainment space, with theatre-style seating for up to 450 people
• Fully-equipped with lighting, including computer-controlled lights and a NEXP-based
audio system
• Recording studio with multiple acoustic environments capable of recording music
and film post-production
• Video studio with television lighting together with a green screen background for
creating chroma key visual effects, professional-level Sony cameras, complete the
studio, with tie-lines to all areas of the facility
• Mirrored dance studio featureing floating floor and AV presentation equipment
• Make-up and hairdressing facilities
• Media room equipped with 20 iMac computers
The College is planning to introduce a Performing Arts stream for Years 11 and 12 in
the near future.
