Lawmakers On Various Threats
AUSTIN — Transnational gangs fueled by Mexican
drug cartels are the biggest threat to security in Texas,
said the state’s homeland security chief at a Feb. 1
hearing at the Capitol.
Steve McCraw, director of
the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, told members of the
House Transportation Committee
and the Senate Transportation
and Homeland Security Committee that his office and partner
agencies are battling the gangs’
multi-billion dollar criminal
enterprise through multi-jurisEd Sterling
dictional “fusion centers.”
These fusion centers are tasked with “connecting the
dots” to prevent acts of terrorism, drug and human trafficking, and serial crimes by pooling the intelligence
efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement
agencies.

Bush School of Government, and author of the book Fair
Play, Jim and wife Meredith will share their experiences of
being former agents of the CIA in the Soviet Union during
the Cold War!
James Olson served in the U.S. Navy (attaining rank of
Lieutenant Commander, USNR).
He is a career officer in the Directorate of Operations of
the Central Intelligence Agency, serving mostly overseas in
clandestine operations. He served as Chief of Counterintelligence at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia and had
overseas assignments in the U.S.S.R., Austria, and Mexico.
Foreign languages: French, German, Russian, and Spanish.
Meredith met her husband Jim at the CIA. Shortly after
their marriage, they were assigned under deep cover to
Paris, France, in December of 1971. Upon their return to
the U.S. in 1976, Meredith and Jim underwent intensive
psychological screening and training for their next assignment to Moscow, USSR. Meredith was fully involved in
operational and support missions for the CIA in the Soviet
Union.

Citizens’ Police Academy
Starts Feb. 23
Woodville Police Department and Tyler County Sheriff’s
Department are conducting a joint Citizens’ Police Academy beginning Tuesday, February 23. The Academy runs
10 weeks and will be held at 7 p.m. Each class runs about
two hours. Jason Borel and Dale Freeman are coordinators.
There is a $15 fee to help defray the cost of materials, drinks
and snacks. You must be 21 years of age and a resident
of Tyler County to apply and must attend at least eight of
the ten classes to graduate.
Here’s an opportunity to learn more about how law enforcement really works. You’ll learn about the job risks,
legal constraints, tactical techniques and much more.
The Academy has been a very popular event each year it

Help Needed To Locate
Missing Christmas Banners
Many of you might have noticed the nice Christmas
Banners that adorned utility poles in Spurger this year.
Four of the eight have now been accounted for.
Spurger Lions Club and Beech Creek Extension Education Agency are asking your help in figuring out what
happened to the banners. The theory is that they simply
blew down from the poles and perhaps someone picked
them up and didn’t know to whom to return them.
The banners are 23” x 82” tall and feature bells and
poinsettias, some red and some green.
If you have seen one of the banners laying in the woods,
or found one yourself, please call Billie Ratcliff at (409)
646-6058.
The Banners really added to the Christmas spirit in Spurger
and will be missed next year if not located before then.

Kimberly Cruse, daughter of Bobby
and Ramona Cruse was crowned “Miss
Tyler County 2010” during the 45th
Annual event held Saturday night at
Woodville Eagles Summit auditorium.
She was selected by the judges from a
field of 6 competitors.
A large crowd turned out for both
sessions Saturday to see the winners

Women’s Study Club High Tea March 6
According to Women’s Study Club High Tea Chairman Phyllis Tubb, the club’s annual High Tea is a
cut above as good as it gets! This event takes second
place to no other.
“The comments we’ve received over the years have
our event receiving praise, placing us even above
the world renowned Empress Hotel High Tea in
Vancouver, B.C.,” Tubb said. “I’ve had High Tea at
the Empress, as well as trying the most coveted Tea
Rooms in England when I’ve been abroad, so I can
make some comparisons.” She added that she thinks
the Women’s Study Club of Woodville could teach
them a few things.
This is the event’s 5th year, and it has grown every
year. So much so that the club has limited the numbers of tickets to this year’s High Tea to just 120.
“We want to be sure that the integrity of the event
and the intimate nature of this special tea time is not
compromised by grand numbers,” Tubb explained.
The High Tea features an extravagant hat contest
that awards beautiful prizes and an opportunity for
the ladies to go back in time for a day. The ornately
presented vintage china tier trays filled with perfectly
delectable and handmade tea foods are presented by
servers dressed in vintage attire as they make a dramatic entrance while 20th century music plays. The
tables are adorned with the crisply starched linens
and the place settings are
works of art, using sterling
silver and unusual serving
pieces.

First Dogwood Princess
Judging Completed
Believe it or not, the 67th Annual Tyler County
Dogwood Festival is closer than you think, and the
Kingsmen’s Committee of the Festival is already at
work picking this year’s Dogwood Queen candidates.
The Kingsmen conduct three judgings, the next will
be February 11. The girls must be seniors enrolled
in a Tyler County High School, and are judged on
the bases of beauty, poise and personality through
individual interviews. During the second judging a
Princess will be selected from each town to represent
her community.
The final judging will be held February 25. It’s at
this judging that the Queen of the 2010 Tyler County
Dogwood Festival will be selected from the five
Princesses.
The identity of the Queen remains a secret until
the coronation activities on April 3 when one of the
Princesses will be crowned Tyler County Dogwood
Festival Queen.
The Tyler County Dogwood Festival has a rich history interrupted only during WWII. It features three
weekends of family fun, including Festival of the
Arts, Western Weekend, and the Queen’s Weekend.

Conditions Bad For Burning
Woodville Fire Marshal Forrest Archer warns that conditions
right now are very bad for burning. Dead grass from the
recent freezes and gusty winds are causing problems. If you
burn, check weather conditions and have a water hose ready.
Archer also reminds Woodville residents that outdoor burning
is banned at anytime in the city.

Woodville. Milton was born
January 31, 1917 to Jesse Neyland & Verna Davison Durham
in Colmesneil, Texas. He was
a 1936 graduate of Kirby High
School in Woodville, Texas. He joined the National Guard
in 1937 while a student at Sam
Houston State Teachers College
where he graduated with a B.S. in
Education in 1940. After WWII,
he attended Texas A&M earning
his MEd in Forestry in 1946. In
1954, he began post-graduate
work toward his doctorate at the
University of Texas. Milton was called to active
duty on November 23, 1940, as
Private 1st Class in the 143rd
Regiment Co. F, 36th Division
at Huntsville, Texas. With the
bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941,
he entered WWII. He completed
Officer’s Candidate School in
1942 and was commissioned
as 2nd Lieutenant after which
he was assigned to Camp San

Obituaries
Luis Obispo, CA. After several
back and forth moves to posts
in Fort Benning, GA and back
to Salinas, CA several times he
was sent from San Francisco
to New Guinea in 1944 also
spending time in the Philippines,
Laiti Island and the South Pacific. Before leaving for active duty in
the war, he married his college
sweetheart, Audrey Benton, on
December 13, 1941 just 6 days
after Pearl Harbor. After 5 combat campaigns, and 7 ½ years
of active duty, Durham retired
from active duty and the Army
Reserves in 1977 having earned
the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Following the war, Milton returned to Woodville in 1946 to
assume the position of Vocational
Agriculture Teacher at Kirby
High School for the next 5 years,
from 1946-1951. During this period he facilitated the acquisition
of land on the Jasper Highway
for the FFA farm for Woodville
Independent School District. He
was also elected to the position of
State Director of the Vocational
Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas during this time. During a recall to active duty in
the Korean Conflict, he served
on the faculty and staff training school at Ft. Benning, GA
for two years. He returned to
Woodville Independent School
District again and taught civics
and history at Kirby High School
from 1953-54. In 1954, he aided
in organizing the first Woodville
Junior High School and served as
its first principal until 1956. In
1956 he was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, to
the position of Postmaster where
he served in Woodville for the
next 21 years until his retirement
in 1977. During this period, a
new Post Office building was
erected, the second class office
was raised to a modern first class
office classification, city delivery
service was established, and rural
delivery service was tripled. In 1946, Milton joined the
Woodville Rotary Club. During his 63 years as an active
member of the Rotary Club
of Woodville, he received the
perfect attendance award for
30 of those years and served as
both Secretary and President of
the club. He received the Four
Avenues of Service Award and
received the distinctive Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary. He received
his 60 year pin for membership
in the Magnolia Masonic Lodge
495 of Woodville having served as
both Secretary and Master of the
Lodge. He served eight years on
the Board of Directors of the Tyler
County Farm Bureau. During this
time, property was secured for
space for an office building and
membership grew from 650 to
2100 members. Five of the eight
years were served as Chairman of
the Board. He served nine years
on the Agriculture Soil Conservation Stabilization Committee for
Tyler County and facilitated the
circulation of a petition for Tyler
County that promoted and lead
to the organization of the Long
Leaf Soil and Water Conservation District receiving the original
charter in 1949. He was named
Outstanding Conservationist in
1986. He was ordained as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of
Woodville in 1949 and served as
Chairman on the Deacon Council. He also served as Chairman of
the Church Trustees from 1975
to 1998. He organized the First
Baptist Church Child Day Care
Center in 1968 and served as its
Chairman until his retirement in
1998. He was named Honorary
Citizen of the Year for the Tyler
County Chamber of Commerce
in 1986 and received the Tyler
County Fair Breeder’s Award
- Breeder of the Year for 1985,
1996 and 1997. For many years
he donated calves for Ag and
4-H Shows. He was a Rancher/
Farmer, raising Registered Black
Angus Cattle until he retired in
1999.
He was preceded in death by
his daughter, Yvette Durham
McManus and his grandson,
Stephen Patrick McManus. He
is survived by his wife of 68
years, Audrey Benton Durham
of Woodville; daughter & sonin-law, Bobbie Roschelle & Dr.
Jerry Springfield of Woodville;
sister, Irene Kelley of Woodville;
grandchildren, Heidi Yvette

James Davis
James O. Davis, 61, of Colmesneil passed away Saturday,
February 6, 2010, at his sister’s
home from a long battle with
cancer.
Born January 21, 1949 in
Woodville, Tx to O. D. and Billie Jean Davis, he was a retired
logger. He attended Colmesneil
High School and was drafted
into the Army where he served
with the 59th Field Service in
Vietnam from 1967-1969. James is preceded in death
by his daughter, Khandi Davis
Sledge and his parents.
He is survived by his brothers,
Charles Van Davis of Nederland and Billy Edgar Davis of
Colmesneil; sisters, Nelda Joy
Burton of Mauriceville, Jolene
Brodnax Teutsch of Lumberton
and Donna Lee of Colmesneil;
grandson, James Wesley Sledge
of Vidor; and a host of nieces
and nephews who he loved very
much.

Ramona Dean, 89, of Magnolia,

Woodville. Officiating was

was a lifelong resident of Tyler
County and was a retired math
teacher from Vidor Independent
School District, where she served
as chairman of the Math Department. She was a 1941 graduate of
Baylor University and received
her Masters Degree from McNeese University in 1973.

Theo Parsons
Theo Kincaid Parsons of Woodville passed away February 1,
2010 at the Woodville Health and
Rehab Center in Woodville.
Theo was born January 31, 1914
in Louisiana to James Kenneth
Shipp and Fannie Anthony Shipp. She lived in Warren most of her
adult life and moved to Woodville after her marriage to Bill
Parsons. A graduate of Warren
High School, she graduated from
the Chenier Business College in
Beaumont. She worked for the
Warren School District as secretary and for the Tax office before
retiring from the Tyler County
Treasurer’s office as the secretary
after many years of service. Theo
was a member of the Woodville
Church of Christ, Warren Chapter
of the Eastern Star and a member
of the Woodville Business and
Professional Club.
Known by many of her friends
as “Chickie”, she loved to fish and
camp on the lake at Toledo Bend. She enjoyed traveling and taking
cruises with friends and family. Some of her hobbies and interest included sewing, crocheting,
reading, crossword puzzles, card
playing with friends and telling
jokes.

Texas is home to several of the 70
fusion centers that report to the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security.
McCraw said roving wiretaps would
help law enforcement track gangs that
use throwaway cell phones.
McCraw also addressed security
in the Capitol complex. He said the
Department of Public Safety has a
plan that includes X-ray machines and
metal detectors to increase protections
and does not turn the Capitol into an
armed fortress.
And, McCraw addressed the estimated 3,000 Texas highway traffic
deaths in 2009. About 15 percent of
those deaths involved commercial
trucks and tractor trailers.
Regarding the new federal law banning commercial truck operators from
typing and sending text messages
while driving, Sen. Florence Shapiro,
R-Dallas, pointed out the difficulty
in enforcing the ban. She brought
up the line-of-sight issue: drivers in
truck cabs are hard for troopers in
sedans to catch in the act of texting.
Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, said
enforcement would be after the fact,
by comparing the time of the accident
with cell phone records.
The House and Senate committees
also had questions about “Real ID”
— the authentication system that ties
together a Texas driver’s license, voter
registration and citizenship. McCraw
said the state is getting better at detecting fake licenses and other forms
of false identification.
Ag chief calls for Haiti help
State Agriculture Commissioner
Todd Staples on Feb. 1 asked farmers
and ranchers to help Haiti, with more
than 2 million people in need of food
and water after the Jan. 12 earthquake.
“Texas is a state large in geography
and even larger in heart and compassion,” Staples said. “Texans have
always responded to those in crisis,
and right now, the Haitian people
desperately need our assistance.
“Whether it’s a surplus food commodity, a volunteer service or a
monetary donation, I know the Texas
agriculture community and citizens
of Texas can find ways to mobilize
resources and offer assistance.”
The Texas Peanut Producers Board
already has responded and is working
to deliver peanut butter.
Shelly Nutt, executive director of the
Texas Peanut Producers Board, said
Texas peanut farmers have combined
efforts with the entire U.S. peanut
industry to raise more than $75,000
to purchase peanut butter for Haiti.
Work program features incentives
“Texas Back to Work,” a two-year,
$15 million employment program
promoted by Lt. Gov. Dewhurst
and funded by the state Legislature
last session, will offer employers
incentives such as subsidized-wage

Grants under the program are available to employers through the 28
Texas local workforce development
boards, which also provide employers with workforce recruitment
assistance, pre-screening of qualified
applicants and training programs.
More than 1.8 million customers
were served in more than 240 workforce centers across Texas last year,
according to the Texas Workforce
Commission.
Computer recycling figures in
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in late January
announced first-year results in its
computer recycling program.
The agency reported manufacturers
collected for reuse or recycling 12.4
million pounds of computer equipment in Texas from Jan. 1 through
Dec. 31, 2009.
The program, which helps conserve
reusable materials including copper,
lead and steel, requires computer
manufacturers that sell in Texas to
offer consumers convenient, free recycling for their brands of computer
equipment.
Currently, 81 manufacturers representing 116 brands are participating
in the program.
This past week was a sad one for

Seems that Elizabeth Toliver’s goal
of getting the Nature Trail ready for
use is being handled by Leslie Smith
and Blake Goss. Leslie has been
clearing the big trees and Blake has
been working on removing the smaller
debris from the actual trails. By the
time the trees bloom out the trails will
be cleared and we will be able to put
trail markers and tree identification
signs out. Thank you so much guys.
They haven’t asked for any help but
if getting out in the open and helping
with a project like this is something
you are interested in, please call the
Village at 283-2272 and offer to help.
The annual Black History exhibit
is now up in the Exhibit Room at
Heritage Village. Mayme Brown has
done an outstanding job, as usual, in
profiling the Frasier family. Dr. Freddie Frasier was the fourth of seven
children of Fred and Sadie Frasier.
They lived in the Dies Community.
Dr. Frasier attended Woodville High
School and received his Ph.D. from
the University of Houston in mathematics. He retired as a mathematics
professor from Prairie View A & M.
He and his wife, Frances, have one
daughter, Francine. Take time to
visit this exhibit that will be open
throughout the month. Thank you,
Ms. Mayme for introducing us to this
Tyler County family.
The Warren Church of Christ will
have their Valentine Party at the
Pickett House on February 11th. The
Hocheim Insurance Group will hold
their annual meeting on February 16th
at the Pickett House. If you are looking for a great place to have a meeting,
give the Village a call at 283-2272.
In addition to the Pickett House we
have the Hamm House now available;
since the storm damage was repaired,
the building was enlarged to include a
restroom, kitchen, and covered porch
with access to the backyard from the
porch.
Don’t ever think that all the visitors we have at Heritage Village
just stumble in off the highway! In
addition to advertising in various
magazines and trade publications, we
have brochures available at the Visitors’ Center in Beaumont and at the
state visitor’s center in Orange. In
addition, we have ambassadors who
visit festivals throughout the state to
publicize not only Heritage Village
but other attractions in Tyler County.
Jesse and Georgia Collins and Alva
Adkins are among our ambassadors.
As they spin wool and weave they tell
the story of our pioneer ancestors as
portrayed at the Village.
Our director, Ofeira Gazzaway, represented the Village at the Longview
RV, Boat, and Travel Show. On the
12th of February she will be in Houston at the Home and Garden Show
held at the Reliant Center.
We know that our best advertisement
is word of mouth. Please help us
spread the word about the hands-on
museum located in Woodville that
seeks to preserve the past for future

Femtoseconds: Who Needs Them?
Chaplain Maness called my attention to a scientific article in which
units of time called femtoseconds
appeared. What on earth is a femtosecond? It is one second times ten
to the minus fifteenth, or in more familiar notation, 0.000000000000001
seconds. That is quick! To give you
some idea how quick, light travels just
three ten thousandths of a millimeter
in one femtosecond.
Maybe you are wondering who in the
world needs units that small, so out of
touch with reality. Most folks don’t, of
course. But the ivory tower types who
speculate about microcosms – and
macrocosms – sometimes have use
for these strange-sounding numeric
prefixes. There are a flock of them.
The larger ones are not that unfamiliar: deci, centi, milli, and micro mean
tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and
millionths. Conversely, deka, hecto,
kilo, and mega mean multiples of ten,
a hundred, a thousand, or a million.
Thanks to our computer whizzes, we
are beginning to hear a lot about giga
and tera: billions and trillions. How
long can it be before our esteemed
politicos in Washington catch on to
those terms? After all, a six-teradollar
debt doesn’t sound nearly as scary as
six trillion.
Those prefixes carry us about as
far as we have any need to go on a
practical scale, but there are many
others. I think theoretical physicists
have a tendency to get carried away
with mathematics after a while. The
concepts they speculate about are
just beyond our ability to visualize
in anything like physical terms. Once
past those limits, it’s easy to go on
and on with nothing but numbers.
The femtosecond is by no means the
end of the line: below that are atto-,
zepto-, and yoctoseconds, meaning
ten to the minus 18, 21, and 24. At
the other end of the scale we have
peta-, exa-, zetta-, and yotta, going
to the 24th power of ten but in the
plus direction.
All this brings to mind the googol,
a word coined by Edward Kasner
to mean ten to the 100th power.
You could go on and on; but why
bother? The story goes that Kasner
was playing with numbers, and asked
his six-year-old daughter for a word
to mean a really big one. Quick as a
flash, she came back with “googol”.
Just to convince you that such numbers are far beyond ever representing
real things, it has been estimated
that the total number of atoms in the
universe is something like ten to the
250th power. So let us not fret over
googols – or femtoseconds!
People who think up names for scientific concepts must be a breed apart.
I don’t know where those numeric
prefixes came from, though I’m guessing they were part of the standardized
metric system that was approved
by Congress in 1960. A number of
other units were given formal names
along the way,
many chosen
to honor scientists who
made original
discoveries in
that area of
knowledge.

The basic
units of electric current are the volt,
ampere, and ohm, measuring voltage,
current, and resistance. All are named
for pioneering scientists. The watt
is related to them, but is a bit of an
anomaly; James Watt had little to do
with electricity. What he did was to
build the first practical steam engine,
and quantify its output in “horsepower”. But horsepower units were
incompatible with the metric system,
so they were converted to electric
power units and called “watt hours”,
or more familiarly “kilowatt hours”.
In my work making electrical measurements in oil wells, I got introduced
to composite units called “ohms per
meter per meter squared”, or ohmmeters for short. They relate to the
specific resistance of any material,
called its resistivity. To clarify, any
sample of matter has a measurable
resistance in ohms. But that measurement is affected not only by the nature
of the sample, but also by its physical dimensions. Resistivity is not so
affected; any sample of that material
will have a characteristic resistivity,
no matter what its size and shape.
Measurement of resistance in ohms
gave rise to a concept called conductance, the reciprocal of resistivity. For
once a new unit was not named for
anybody; they just reversed “ohms”
into “mhos”! I just knew you’d want
to know about that.
Another old familiar measurement
has been renamed by the metricals:
“cycles per second” has long been
a unit of electromagnetic wave frequency. It is now called the Hertz,
not from the rental agency but after
Heinrich Hertz, a German physicist.
Confusing? You ought to check out
the whole realm of metrication! It’ll
drive you right back to furlongs per
fortnight!

recently that there is so much
greed in our world. And they
were commenting as to how
that seems to be the driving
force behind everything. Are we
ready for the real super Bowl?
When people will pay thousands of dollars for a ticket
to a Super Bowl, something is
wrong. (My wife and I went to
Super Bowl VII when we paid
$15.00 for choice seats.) When
people will almost freeze to
death to watch an athletic contest isn’t something wrong?
Don Cain made the following observation on January 27,
2008. “How easy would it be to
get a crowd to a service to worship
God if we had to sit outdoors in
sub-zero weather? I am not saying
we should. Their attendance does
show one thing, though, and that is
they really love football. People do
what they love most. The next time
it is a little warm or a little cool in
the church auditorium, I am going
to think about those poor people
suffering in frigid temperatures in
Green Bay. But freezing is still better than burning. (A little subliminal message there.) When you get
to thinking you have it rough, just
think of those first century Christians. In the arena, Nero watched
them play the Lions.”

fingertip cathedral veil. In honor of
her deceased grandmother,Agatha
Hebert Badeaux, Mrs. Badeaux’s
rosary was attached to the bride’s
bouquet.

Mentors needed for ‘At Risk’
school kids
Adult mentors are needed for Woodville ISD students that are “at
risk” of dropping out of school.
The Restorative Justice Ministry Family Service Center is seeking
individuals who would, after being trained by the school district,
consider being placed with a child to encourage him/her while in
school for one class period a week.
According to John Morrison, Executive Director of the RJMFSC,
“The Mentoring responsibility is very rewarding for the student and
the mentor. And, if you would like to help a child by encouraging

Gospel Singing School To Begin
February 16
Josserand Independent Baptist Church will host a southern gospel singing school
beginning February 16th. The school will run for 9 weeknights. There is no cost to
the public for attending this school.
If you are interested, please bring a pencil and a notebook for taking notes. Mrs.
Pauline Thompson, will be the teacher. Because of the donkey basketball game, the
first night of the school will be the 16th at 6 PM. Class will run until 8 PM, Tuesday
through Friday and repeat Monday through Friday of the next week.
Mrs. Pauline is a remarkable musician. She has dedicated her life to promoting gospel
music sung the old-fashioned way, four-part harmony. Those who wish to attend her
class will learn music theory, improve their singing and see a glimpse into the world
of song writing and music composition. It will be a great two weeks. Adults and young folks alike are all invited to attend.

In the text, Isaiah 6:1-13, we have a three part
portion of scripture. In verses 1-4 we have the
vision Isaiah saw of God on the throne and his
angelic attendants. The description is fantastic,
complete with the Holy One sitting on the throne
in glory, and the six-winged seraphim flying
around and praising Him. Isaiah’s first reaction
is natural enough—he says, “I am a man of unclean lips living among a people of unclean lips.”
Wow, is that ever descriptive of us today? As if
in answer to Isaiah’s feelings of unworthiness, a
seraph flies to him with a burning coal and purifies the mouth of Isaiah. Then, when God calls
for someone to send to Israel to prophesy in the
second part of the passage, Isaiah feels worthy
to say “Here am I, send me!”
This passage of the verses 1-8 has been used in
ordination services in many denominations for
a long time. But, the last section—verses 9-13
is never included in ordination services because
of the unexpected and unusual content. Isaiah
is sent to prophesy and preach to the Israelites,
but he is to stop up their ears, to prevent them
from hearing and blind them to stop them from
seeing, to harden their hearts. In other words,
Isaiah is being sent with God’s full intention for
the mission to fail. It seems kind of odd, doesn’t
it?
Well, if we study the history and background,
we see that this scripture about Isaiah’s vision
is part of a bitter memory of the Israelite nation.
They were taken away in the Babylonian exile
and then returned and had to rebuild everything
from scratch.
Isaiah asked the Lord, “how long?” and God
responded “until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people and the land is
utterly desolate, until the Lord sends everyone
far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst
of the land.”
This explains the Babylonian exile as punishment from God aimed at the Israelites for their
apostasy and sin.
What does this passage have to say to us in Tyler
County in 2010? I believe it is a reminder that
God is holy and we are not. His complete and
total “otherness” is underlined in the first few
verses of this passage. Yet, as Isaiah is cleansed
and prepared for ministry, and enabled to say,
“Here am I, send me!” we are able to serve the
same Holy and eternal God in the same way that
Isaiah did centuries ago.

It’s a new year of fishing, and it is
only appropriate to talk about all
of the newest and hottest fishing
gear on the market in this week’s
column. It is always helpful to
know which products will work
and which are just hype.
First on the list is Cabela’s brand
new for 2010 fillet station table.
The 37 by 22 inch table is portable
and comes in a carrying case that
will fit in most boats without taking up too much space. It also has
detachable steel legs for quick
and easy assembly on the water.
It’s perfect for cleaning fish while
on the lake or as soon as you get
to a pier or dock. The best thing
about the table in my opinion is
the two stainless steel bowls that
are built into the table. You can
easily throw fillets into the bowls
while making sure they won’t
fall on the ground or get cross
contaminated with anything
else on the table. The table also
comes with a high quality stainless steel knife and sheath. The
knife is made to fit into a special
box in the table so that it is never
far away from reach. To keep
everything together, the table
comes with a waterproof storage
bag that keeps all of your supplies
clean, dry and organized. This
portable filleting table is brand
new and will be a great addition
to anyone’s boat or lake house.
The only downside to Cabelas’
table is that it cost almost $70,
and most fisherman have a free

home. But if you want to spend

great addition to any fishing trip.
Another new Cabela product
for 2010 is the Hawk Eye portable sonar. This system is small,
handheld, and light. Better yet,
it will give you the instant depth
reading of water up to 200 feet
with the push of a button. It can
also show real time temperature
of water or air, up to 122 degrees
farenheit. On top of all that, this
incredibly small device also has
fish readings. It is equipped with
a side scan fish sonar, algorithmic
programming, and instant depth
updates. All of the features of a
larger sonar, in a small 7 inch long
and 2 inch wide device. The sonar
takes batteries so no charging
is required to keep it working.
The battery case is dry-sealed,
ensuring the batteries will never
get wet and ruined, and won’t
need to be changed every time
you use it. The sonar only takes
four AA batteries and can be used
continuously for 30 hours, even
in extreme conditions.
There are also an abundance
of new reels, such as the new
Abu Garcia Soron and Orra SX,
both of which many fishermen
are already talking about. There
are also many new fish finders
from Hummingbird and other
popular manufacturers that are
faster, smarter and more compact
than last years models. There is
also new technology in fishing
tackle and tackle boxes. The list
of new scents, colors and types
of lures for 2010 is much too
long to try to cover. My advice
is for you to go shopping and try
out some of the newest gadgets
and stuff to give even the most
novice of fishermen an enjoyable
experience on the water. There
are some though who just want
to go fishing the old fashioned
way with a cane pole and red and
white bobber. Whatever your
preference you can never really
go wrong whether you are on the
lake, on the pier or on the bank.
The fact of the matter is that
warmer weather is coming and
now is the time to prepare for that
first exciting spring expedition on
the waterways of southeast Texas

CELEBRATE 29TH WIN
The Lady Eagles did not play their best brand of basketball on senior
night against the Hemphill Lady Hornets but it was good enough
to seize their ninth consecutive district win and clinch the District
22-2A championship outright. The Lady Eagles looked like they
were on their way to an easy 56-43 win but their 29th consecutive
win was anything but easy. It was a tale of two halves. In the first
half, the Lady Eagles led the turnover battle by a nearly 5:1 ratio.
The Eagles gave Hemphill a brand new look in this game. Most
fans and opponents are used to watching the Eagles will their way
to victory with the full court press.
This time though the Lady Eagles came out with a new wrinkle.
They threw a 1-3-1 defense at the Lady Hornets and in the first half
Brooke Taylor caused a lot of confusion for Hemphill as time and
again she would jump the passing lane. Taylor scored seven of her
game high 20 points in the opening eight minutes of play.
The Eagles dropped in fourteen points in the opening quarter
including 4 points from Meisha McNeal and a basket by Quadrena
Moye. In the second quarter, Moye continued to have the upper
hand as she led the Lady Eagles offense with 7 points, part of a 29
point first half explosion that saw Woodville comfortably ahead
by 14 points at the intermission.In the second half, the,tables were
reversed as Hemphill had a decided advantage thanks to the uncharacteristically sloppy play by Woodville.
The Lady Eagles managed only nine points in the period while
their turnovers helped Hemphill cut a fourteen point halftime deficit
to six with only 2:45 to play. Taylor then turned up her defensive
game a notch which resulted in easy baskets for the Lady Eagles as
they would outscore the Lady Hornets 10-3 over the final minutes
of play. Samantha Gilder who scored 10 points had four points in
the crucial fourth quarter.
McNeal was the third Lady Eagle to finish with double digits as
she added 10 points to the winning cause. Kayla Humphrey who
also had four timely points in the fourth quarter finished the game
with six points. Quadrena Moye was nearly the fourth Lady Eagle
in double digits finishing the game with nine points, all in the first
half.
The Colmesneil Lady Bulldogs had their senior night spoiled as
they fell to the Lady Pirates of West Sabine. Before the game, Bulldogs honored their senior players Kaylee Hughes, Kalyn Ramsey,
Nikki Worthey and Alyssa Segrest. In an unusual move, the Lady
Bulldogs also recognized their coach Reagan Sewell when they
presented him a photo of the ladies. The presentation recognized
the effort Coach Sewell has given to the team to help them become
a winning program. After the presentation it was time for some
basketball. The Lady Bulldogs led 16-13 after one quarter but
trailed 30-22 at the half. It was a deficit the Lady Bulldogs were
unable to make up as they fell to West Sabine. Shelby Duhon (11
points) and Jaymee Broussard (7 points) led the Bulldog attack.

meeting of these two teams
on January 19, 2010, the Lady
Pirates started slowly and could
not make up the deficit despite
a strong second half. It took a
minute and a half before the Lady
Pirates got their first points off
a Bryttne Means three pointer to
cut the early Hull-Daisetta lead to
4-3. Means would add another
point later and Mindi Moore and
Haley Hardy cashed in points
to keep the lead at 13-7 as the
quarter drew to a close. In the
second half, the Pirates shooters
continued their cold streak while
it seemed Hull-Daisetta could not
miss. Spurger could only manage
four points in the quarter. Two
of those points came from
senior point guard (#21) pictured
above ). Moore led all Spurger
scorers in the contest with nine
points. In the second half, the
Pirates came to life once again
on both ends of the courrt. Ashley Hollier got the Lady Pirates
rolling with a short jumper. The
teams would trade baskets most
of the third quarter. With ten seconds to play in the third quarter,
Moore scored to cut the lead to
eight points and then Haley
Hardy grabbed a defensive board
as time expired. The Lady Pirates
wasted little time continuing their
hot shooting. Kelsey Sheffield
sank a close range jumpshot to
get the Lady Pirates on the board.

Hatton’s basket to close the gap
to 33-29. Moments later, Hardy
gathered in another defensive
board and threw a perfect outlet
to Hollier who outran the Bob-
cats for the easy lay-up and
suddenly the deficit was just a
basket at 33-31 with 4:17 to play.
As quick as a wink though the
Bobcat defense woke up limiting the Pirates to just one more
basket the rest of the way. The
loss forces the Pirates into a do
or die situation in the final two
games of the season. They will
have their work cut out for them
as they face the Evadale Lady
Rebels Friday night.

Team Competition Set For March 27, 2010
I-CareNation President David S. Cotton recently
announced that I-CareNation.org has completed
the process of finalizing all insurance requirements
and establishing the date and location of the next
National High Scool Bass Open Team Contest. The
contest will be held on Saturday March 27, 2010
on Toldeo Bend Lake. Last year’s contest raised
enough money to award scholarships to Tyler Berry
and Jacob Homan, both of whom are attending
Lousiana Tech University. Promotional items have
already been sent to high schools across the nation
however if you have not received anything concerning this tournament please go to I-CareNation.org
where not only can you get information about the
location, maps, tournament rules, and entry forms
but find out how your students can apply for the
scholarships. All bass clubs and fishermen are
encouraged to not only recruit but sponsor teams
for this national tournament. This is an opportunity for the outdoorsman in your life to make an
investment in the future of bass fishing but more
importantly to make a significant difference in a
young person’s life. This is also an opportunity
to give something that money cannot buy; time
and experience. The scholarships can be used for
college, trade schools, or towards law enforcement

2009-2010 Re-Districting At-A-Glance
The 2009-2010 annual re-districting plan is complete. This seemingly annual rite of passage has
a few surprises and a few newcomers to the districts. I for one am glad to see this happen. It will
provide new opportunities to see other parts of Southeast Texas making new friends along the way
and reacquainting ourselves with some old ones. On the gridiron, the face of District 22-2A is gone
as once we knew it. Kirbyville, San Augustine, Shelbyville, and Hemphill have all departed while
the teams from 23-2A minus Deweyville have joined forces with Newton, Warren and Woodville
to create the new District 10-2A. Meanwhile another school on the move is Colmesneil along with
Hull-Daisetta. They leave District 23-1A to join with Lovelady, Pineland West Sabine and Saratoga
West Hardin to make up District 11-1A. Fans in Chester will still have to compete with perennial
power Evadale and High Island and former 2A powerhouse Burkeville despite moving down to 1A
Division 2.
The basketball reshuffle brings Corrigan-Camden back to be a district nemesis for Woodville. No
longer will Woodville play the likes of Hemphill and Shelbyville instead they will meet Woden and
Nacogdoches Central Heights. Warren’s competition remains unchanged. Spurger and Chester both
drop to 1A Division 2 basketball where their whole landscape of foes has changed. Gone are teams
like Evadale, Sabine Pass, and West Hardin and in come teams like Leggett, LaMarque Shekinah
Radiance, and Goodrich not to mention old district foe High Island. Colmesneil leaves the confines
of the old District 23-1A and becomes a part of the new District 24-1A featuring none other than
current rival Zavalla along with Brookeland and Broaddus.

then the Woodville Eagles? The Eagles stretched their win streak
to eleven games with a 68-46 win over the Hemphill Hornets. The
Eagles are now 7-0 in district play and 19-6 overall. Jarrod Barclay
(23 points) and Jarvis Barlow (19 points) combined for nearly half
of the Eagles offense. Calib Hadnot took control of cleaning the
glass on both ends of the floor with 12 rebounds including five
offensive boards. Tommy Arline who has started to make a mark
on this team pulled down 9 more boards. Korbin Pate and Barclay

Youth Baseball Association and he, along
with board members Neil Hennigan, Debbie
Hennigan, Trey Allison, Todd Dinger, Marty
Thompson, Wyatt Walsh, Jimmy MacInnis,
Kevin Faircloth, Richard “Kooter” Shaw
and Brad Hassig, is gearing up to implement
several positive changes for the league and
Hennigan Park.
“After Gary Hennigan passed away,
Clint Sturrock had to take on the entire
system and work through two hurricanes. He
was able to keep it going up to this point,”
Hensarling said. “After years of dedication

According to Hensarling, bringing
Hennigan Park back to its glorified status
as a well-known, first class playing field
in East Texas is going to take some good
old-fashioned hard work and volunteerism.
“It will have to include real donations of
time, talent and resources,” said Hensarling.
We can raise serious money to take care of
overdue upgrades on the field just by hosting
Dixie tournaments. But, the bidding for a
tournament starts at $4000 and goes up from
there…as much as $12,000. The good news
is, if we host one, we will make back all the
money plus double or triple the investment”.
In most communities, a ballpark
like Hennigan Park services only one town,
but Tyler County is unique in the fact that
it services an entire county. “We are able
to produce real all star teams, made up of
the entire county and that is good for the
players,” Hensarling said.

be the first item on the agenda for the new

Woodville High School
currently leases a portion of the facilities for
their baseball program and these proceeds
cover the electric bill for the park during
baseball season. Each child participating in
Dixie baseball will pay $85 to cover the cost
of uniforms, insurance and a few overhead
expenses. Each team will provide a sponsor.
For $300 the sponsor will be included on the
group sponsor sign. It is $500 if a sponsor
wants their own banner or $750 if a sponsor
wants their own color metallic sign. This
money goes straight to the general fund

checks for all volunteers to gasoline for the
lawnmowers and everything in between. “This operation is not a money-maker for the league
or for any one individual and it never has been. It takes a lot of money to keep the park and
the organization operational,” Hensarling said. “It takes everything we make and then some.”
“We need a big donor or a grant writer to help with the current lighting system at
Hennigan Park,” Hensarling said. Herald Allison Jr., along with Gulf States Utilities and
Southwestern Bell, generously donated and installed the system back in 1972…37 years ago.
Its life expectancy was 35 years. To repair it will take $500,000 and is a real need for the park.
If we get a crew together to do the labor, we can get it done for approximately $380,000. The
land was donated by International Paper to the county for the express purpose of building a
county ballpark we could all be proud of and the entire county would benefit from.
“Our most aggressive fundraising efforts this year will be selling big 4x8 lighted
highway signs in front of Hennigan Park,” Hensarling said. “The highway sign advertising
will be $2500 each and good for two years. Only 20 spots are available and all proceeds
for this project will go directly for bidding on Dixie tournaments coming to Tyler County.
We have to have money to make money and hosting Dixie tournaments will make money for
Hennigan Park and our youth baseball program as well as stimulate the economy in Tyler
County.”
Other changes everyone can be watching for include revising the operation of the
concession stand, providing designated smoking areas and the creation of committees to take
on various responsibilities. “My vision is to create the following committees: Building and
Grounds, Finance, Tournament, Concessions and Improvements,” Hensarling said. “I would
like volunteers besides coaches and board members to take on these responsibilities. Retired
businessmen, grandparents, etc. who want to make contributions to the league.”
If anyone is interested in taking on a project, immediate needs are mowing, marking
fields, concessions, trash clean up, roofing, fencing, painting, etc. “Clay Rawls and Brett
Hanks spent time at the park this weekend repairing a field and plan to continue doing field
repairs,” Hensarling said. ‘This is the kind of individual effort it is going to take. We are
currently working with the county to solve the trustee program for the best interest of the
youth of Tyler County and the future of Hennigan Park. In the mean time, parents, coaches
and volunteers are going to have to step up to the plate and deliver some real hands-on help in
these areas. Again, thanks so much to Clint Sturrock for 12 years of service to the league.”
Sign-ups for the upcoming season are: Chester and Spurger to be announced;
Colmesneil – Saturday, February 13 from 9-12 at the old gym; Warren – Saturday, February
13 from 9-12 at the jr. high cafeteria and tryouts March 6; Woodville – Saturday Feb. 20 and
27 from 9-12 at Hennigan Park and tryouts March 13. Anyone who misses sign-ups in their
own town can come to Woodville on these dates and they will be signed up for a team in
their own hometown. “I will be planning a Town Hall meeting at Hennigan Park very soon,
to answer questions anyone may have about the Dixie Youth Baseball program,” Hensarling

Thursday fire guts Sawyer Cafe here
Fire of undetermined origin gutted the inside of Tom Sawyer’s Cafe here about 10 p.m. last
Thursday. Mr. Sawyer said that the blaze apparently started at or near a water heater. The cafe
had closed about 9 p.m. he said. He estimated the loss at $7000 and said he had some insurance. Mr. Sawyer expressed his thanks to members of the Woodville volunteer fire department
and also to several persons who helped carry out some of the businesses furnishings which were
saved. Lost in the blaze was a number of hunting and fishing trophies owned by former owner
of the cafe, Joe E. Smith of Woodville.

ran into the back bumper of a
black 2008 Dodge 4-door truck
I was transporting just on the
north side of Woodville. We
were northbound. A lady, who
said she lived in Colmesneil,
stopped and gave me her name
and phone number, saying the
other person, driving a small car,
was following too close, and if
I needed a witness to call her. I
gave her name and number to the
Woodville policeman, but he did
not include it in his report of the
accident. If you were the person
who witnessed this accident, or

Today TWENTY ONE kittens under the age of one year traveled to
safety and the promise of adoptive homes with a San Antonio No KIll
Shelter. Nearly a dozen people helped make this rescue possible. The
kittens came from four area shelters. Most of them would certainly
have been euthanized without our help.
This is the second Kitten Rescue of its kind. Just weeks ago, Peggy
Jones of Pilots N Paws flew NINETEEN kittens to the same San Antonio
Shelter. Every last one was adopted within days of arrival. We expect
the same happy ending for the 21 kittens we transferred today.

The Woodville Independent School District will receive Competitive Sealed Proposals

local time on February 17, 2010.
This project consists of demolition work, carthwork, concrete and asphalt work, installing storm drain pipe, modifying an existing irrigation system, construction track

Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted on weekdays which

On August 18, 2008, a lady
ran into the back bumper of a
black 2008 Dodge 4-door truck
I was transporting just on the
north side of Woodville. We
were northbound. A lady, who
other person, driving a small car,
was following too close, and if
I needed a witness to call her. I
gave her name and number to the
Woodville policeman, but he did
not include it in his report of the
accident. If you were the person
who witnessed this accident, or
you know who did, please, call
me. I am being sued wrongfully,
