THE PASTOR’S WEEKLY LETTER – March 27th 2016
~ Easter Sunday ~
Dear Parishioners:
WELCOME: Welcome to all our visitor s on this glor ious Easter Sunday! Thank you for gr acing our community with your presence today. We hope you feel the warmth, welcome, hospitality and spirit of our wonderful parish
family! May the ever-new hope of Easter enable you to embrace the life-giving resurrection message of the Christian
faith through the Gospel of Life and the body of Christ here at St. Martha’s! Happy Easter and welcome to all!
SAVE THE DATE: Please plan to join the Papal Or der s of Long Island for the 5:00 PM Mass next Satur day
(Divine Mercy Weekend). Archbishop Bernardito Auza will be the celebrant and preacher. Archbishop Auza is the
Apostolic (Papal) Nuncio to the United Nations.
WEBSITE: Finally we have a new, updated website which I encour age you to visit. The electr onic addr ess is:
www.saintmartha.org
PLEASE NOTICE: The pr oject to upgr ade the chur ch lights has been completed. We will now have lighting
many times better than we’ve had – and we will save 70% on energy costs! … Also, please notice our new “Y ear of
Mercy” banners and the refurbished statues of Mary and Joseph.
COMING SOON: We will soon have pew cushions, new kneeler s and new bookr acks for the chur ch. In the
meantime to save space, we will not be using the missalettes and music issues. Instead, we’ll use a single page worship-aid with the lyrics of the hymns and the citation of the readings. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.
Once the new bookracks are in (about nine weeks from now) the books will be back for regular use. Please pass the
music programs down the pew row at the beginning and end of the Mass for neat storage. Thanks!
NEW PASTOR: I am happy to infor m you that Father Chr istopher Costigan will be the next (sixth) pastor of
St. Martha’s beginning on June 29th 2016. Father Costigan is presently serving as Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s,
Manhasset! He will be extremely blessed to be here – as I have been for 16 years (1981-1985 and twelve as pastor).
Father Costigan is a fine young priest who grew up nearby in Oceanside. Please see his bio in this bulletin.
YOURS TRULY: I have been appointed as pastor of Cure of A rs Par ish in Mer r ick which is also a ver y beautiful parish community (about 6 miles southeast). None of this is official until the notarized appointment letters from
the bishop are received. As I mentioned last Sunday, I ran into Bishop Murphy at a St. Patrick’s event last week. He
asked me if I wanted to be the pastor of Melville as well as Merrick. I told him Merrick and Melville are a bit far
apart. I did say that if he needed me to pastor two parishes, I would be extremely happy to “do” both Merrick and
Uniondale. He said “no, you have to leave Uniondale.” Oh well! … However, if the beloved Pope Francis (The
Great) appoints a new bishop (“soon and very soon,” as the Advent hymn goes) then maybe all this might be altered,
as it were. Who knows? Nevertheless, whatever happens the Holy Spirit will make sure all things work for the good
of the church in Uniondale, Merrick and beyond!

Easter 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Christ,
This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia! Alleluia!
Saint Paul tells us that In Christ Jesus you are a new creation! Today we know with the mind of faith and feel in our
hearts filled with joy how true that is and whence comes this wondrous and unique gift. It is God’s gift that shows the
boundless love He has for us when in the fullness of time He sent His Son, born of a woman. Without the obedient love
of the Son who became one like us in all things but sin, we could never have been saved in the extraordinary way that in
fact we are saved. We have been saved by one like us. That means that all we are and all that we experience on this
earth has been embraced by Jesus, the God-Man. He alone could save us as Son of God. He alone, as fully human as we
all are, could transform us, with whom He shares our humanity, by offering us the way to share in His divinity.
Nailed to the cross, He overcame that ancient curse of universal death. For His death became the passage way that destroys death and opens the path to eternal life for us and for all humankind. Now He breaks the bonds of death by breaking forth from the tomb in His glorified state. Now the angels can say to the first apostles, W hy look among the dead for
one who is living? He is not here among the dead! He has risen as He said!
Nicodemus once asked Jesus How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s
womb and be born again, can he? No, Nicodemus, that is true. But Jesus has made the Holy Sepulchre His tomb to be
the womb from which He comes forth to the glorified state that He shares with us. We who have entered into the font of
Baptism and emerged from the waters of Baptism are His new creation sharing the life of the One Who today we truly
proclaim God’s Son, the Victor over sin and death, the Savior of all humankind.
As His new creation, Paul rightly calls us A mbassadors of Christ. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, on this Easter Day as
we rejoice, I would like to call us all to re-commit ourselves to being Ministers of Reconciliation in our families and our
communities but especially in our Church and in our nation. Too many members of our Church engage in polemic and
seek to divide us as if bishops are persecutors of the laity or consecrated women and men are at odds with priests and pastors. These attitudes and these divisions deny the new creation the Risen Christ has given us. Our nation has sunk into a
new low in public discourse when political leaders and pressure groups ridicule and label one another or accuse those
who disagree with the prevailing forces as being “haters” and “phobic”.
May all of us on Easter Sunday, in the presence of the Risen Christ, at Mass, in our homes and in our hearts, put aside
those attitudes and commit ourselves to the ministry of reconciliation, eschewing the tawdry and the degrading, and reaffirming the respect and dignity of all, for HE came to be the Savior of all Humankind and today in our hearts and in our
world, we proclaim
JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN AND HE IS LORD FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN!

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my
medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an
unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover
my household bills from missed work, as well as
smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of
paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only
one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I
will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent.
That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those
of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to,
please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for
my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new
link is www.gofundme.com/lishanson. You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped.
God bless and thank you so much. St. Martha’s has been incredible with your generosity.
Sixth Pastor of St. Martha’s….
FATHER CHRISTOPHER COSTIGAN grew
up in nearby Oceanside, NY and attended Saint Christopher's Parish and School.
He entered Chaminade High School and after graduation
attended the University of Notre Dame. He graduated in
2002 with a degree in Government and International
Studies, Philosophy, and Theology. Following college he
worked for one year as an Emergency Medical Technician for a local fire department. In 2003 he entered the
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington to
study for the priesthood for the Diocese of Rockville
Centre. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 14,
2008 and was assigned to the parish of Saint Bernard in
Levittown. In 2013 he was assigned to Saint Mary in
Manhasset, and in June 2016 will become pastor of Saint
Martha in Uniondale. Father Chris has also been a member of the Oceanside Fire Department since 1998 and was
appointed Department Chaplain in 2008. In 2015, Fr.
Chris was appointed as a diocesan chaplain to the Nassau
County Fire Service. In addition to the Fighting Irish, he
is also a fan of the New York Yankees, New York Jets,
and the New York Islanders. Father Costigan has pursued
advanced studies in liturgy at Notre Dame and for several
years was an instructor in Liturgical Studies.

USCCB President Urges Support For Petition To Stop Christian Genocide
March 16, 2016
WASHINGTON—The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB)
Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, issued an urgent call, March 14, to support a petition to
stop genocide in the Middle East and convince the U.S. Department of State to include Christians in any formal
declaration of genocide.
The call to action was issued days before the U.S. Department of State is expected to make a decision on the
issue, and as a congressional resolution gains support in Congress.
"For months, the Catholic Church has been a voice for Christians and other religious minorities facing the evil
of deadly persecution," Archbishop Kurtz said. "Please, make sure your name is added to the witness. The very
future of the ancient Christian presence in the Middle East is at stake."
The petition is available at: www.stopthechristiangenocide.org
ARCHBISHOP KURTZ' full statement follows:
Join Me in the Pledge to Stop Christian Genocide
A Statement from Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville,
President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Today, the people of God must speak up for our brothers and sisters facing genocide in the Middle East. I urge
every Catholic to sign the petition at www.stopthechristiangenocide.org. As a people of faith, we must convince the United States Department of State to include Christians in any formal declaration of genocide.
For months, the Catholic Church has been a voice for Christians and other religious minorities facing the evil
of deadly persecution. Now, the State Department is expected to make a decision within days. A resolution, H.
Con. Res. 75, is also gaining bipartisan support in Congress. Please, make sure your name is added to the witness. The very future of the ancient Christian presence in the Middle East is at stake.
I am grateful to my brother bishops, the Knights of Columbus and all the faithful who have struggled to keep a
focus on suffering Christians in the national debate. Rest assured of my continued prayers and support.
With each passing day, the roll of modern martyrs grows. While we rejoice in their ultimate victory over death
through the power of Jesus' love, we must also help our fellow Christians carry the Cross of persecution and, as
much as possible, help relieve their suffering. By doing so, the Middle East and the world will be made safer
for people of every faith to live in peace.

Dear Lord,
As my life declines and my energies decrease,
more than ever hold me by
Your Power, that I may not offend You,
but daily increase in Your Love.
Give me strength to work in Your Service
till the last day of my life.
Help me to ever have an increasing
dread of venial sin,
or whatever would cause the
slightest withdrawal of Your Love;
all day long,
and at night keep me close to Your Heart;
and should I die, ere the morning breaks,
may I go rejoicing
in that vision of Your entrancing beauty,
never to be separated from You. Amen.
Scripture Readings
March 28—April 2
Right after 911, I had this vision; a man dressed in white told
me, “You see what happened?” I said yes. He said “You
know why this is happening? It’s because they don't have
love for one another like we have.” He said “Go and tell the
whole world to recite Psalm 25. I asked him how was I to do
that? He said “Go tell Oprah.” I know myself as a shy and
timid person; I could never tell Oprah or tell anyone. But after
what happened in Boston, I felt such guilt and disobedience
in not doing what I was told. The same way that the Lord
loves us, so we must love one
another. Please help me to tell the
world to recite Psalm 25 and maybe
the world will be a better place.

Easter
Entering the tomb…. That is why we are here: to
enter, to enter into the mystery which God has
accomplished with his vigil of love.
misa.
We cannot live Easter without entering into the
mystery. It is not something intellectual, something we only know or read about…. It is more,
much more!
INTENCION DE LA MISA: J uan Rober to Fuentes.
GRUPO DE ORACION: Miér coles, 7:00 PM, en el gimnasio de la Escuela.
To enter into the mystery means the ability to
wonder, to contemplate; the ability to listen to
the silence and to hear the tiny whisper amid
great silence by which God speaks to us (cf. 1
Kgs 19:12).
ULTREYA: Domingo, 11:00 AM en la Capilla.
ESCUELA DE DIRIGENTES: Cada lunes, 7 a 10 PM en la
Escuela Marianista.
MOVIMIENTO FAMILIAR CRISTIANO CATÓLICOS:
Se reúne cada 15 días.
Para información llamar al 516-554-4503 o al 516-965-7311.
To enter into the mystery demands that we not be
afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not flee from what we fail to
understand, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our questions….
To enter into the mystery means going beyond
our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and
indifference which hold us back, and going out
in search of truth, beauty, and love. It is seeking
a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy
one, to the questions which challenge our faith,
our fidelity, and our very existence.
CENACULO DE LA DIVINA MISERICORDIA: Pr imer
martes, 7:00 PM en la Capilla.
ESCUELA DE LA PALABRA: Mar tes, 7:30 PM en la Iglesia de San Ladislaus.
MISA DE NIÑOS Y JOVENES: Segundo domingo del mes.
To enter into the mystery we need humility, the
lowliness to abase ourselves, to come down from
the pedestal of our “I” which is so proud, of our
presumption; the humility not to take ourselves
so seriously, recognizing who we really are:
creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners
in need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery
we need the lowliness that is powerlessness, the
renunciation of our idols...in a word, we need to
adore. Without adoration, we cannot enter into
the mystery.
LOS NIÑOS: Se r eúnen cada domingo en el Salón Betania
para compartir las lecturas dominicales.
MINISTERIO SOCIAL: Lunes, mar tes, jueves, vier nes,
