Director’s Note:
Our Fun Photo
Happy spring to all! It’s about time the rain and wind is lessening
so we can get out and enjoy all the May flowers in bloom!
Our Vounteer Luncheon was a lot of fun on April 11th! Members,
please join us in thanking our volunteers for all they do to help
make BSC an attractive place to visit offering many diverse
activities!
This summer, the Fired Arts Studio, again, is holding
Grandchildren’s Day on Thursdays beginning June 23 through
Aug. 25th. This year, however, we will need you to register your
grandchildren as only 8 children will be permitted in the studio at
one time due to limited staff and space.
With interest so high, a Sewing Circle has been initiated and will
meet on Thursdays and Fridays. See Sewing Circle description
under the Special Events/New Programming page for specific
days.
On the third Tuesday of each month, we will now have a “Golden”
Bingo, sponsored by Golden Living Center, during our regularly
scheduled days. Something new and different! Prizes and
refreshments. Come try it out!
I do need to convey a few reminders and notices. 1) Numerous
items are in the “Lost and Found.” Please see Susan if you are
missing something. 2) Anyone wanting to attract and observe
Monarch Butterflies, we have Milkweed seeds you can plant in
your yard. 3) We have one instructor for Geneology/Ancestory,
therefore, scheduled appointments are subject to change.
Please be assured if this happens to you, every effort will be
made to reschedule another appointment at the earliest
convenience. Finally, the Fired Arts Studio closes at 4:00.
Cleanup must begin at 3:45. Instructors need the last 30 minutes
to prepare for the next day.
Hope to see you soon!

Dream Catchers
Burst of Glass (two-part class)
Date: Wednesday, June 15th
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (break for lunch)
Dream catchers are arts and
crafts of the Native American
people. The original web
dream catcher of the Ojibwa
was intended to teach natural
wisdom. Nature is a profound
teacher. Dream catchers of
twigs, sinew, and feathers
have been woven since
ancient times by Ojibwa
people. They were woven by
the
grandfathers
and
grandmothers for newborn
children and hung above the
cradleboard to give the infants peaceful, beautiful
dreams. The night air is filled with dreams. Good dreams
are clear and know the way to the dreamer, descending
through the feathers. The
slightest movement of the
feathers indicated the passage
of yet another beautiful dream.
Bad dreams, however, are
chaotic and confusing. They
cannot find their way through
the web and are trapped there
until the sun rises and
evaporates them like the
morning dew. – DreamCatcher.org
A limited supply of decorations will be available to
decorate your dream catcher. If you would rather not
weave the inside of your project, bring a doily (example
above) to fill the circle. You may also bring any
decorations you have at home to use.
Cost: $7.00

your piece with glass frit,

and then again after the second session creating
beautiful, eye catching pieces of art.

Chicken Foot Dominoes
Dates: Fridays, May 6th and June 3rd Time: 10:00 a.m.
–?
Chicken Foot dominoes is one of the more recent
versions of the Train Domino game. It is also known as
Chicken Dominoes, Chickie Dominoes and Chickie. The
original game is said to have originated in Texas. It is
very popular in the southwest and southern United States
and gaining popularity in the northern states.
The goal of the game is to have the lowest score by the
end of the last round. For each round, the goal is for the
player to empty their
hand of dominoes by
playing them on the
board.
No need to know how
to play. We will go
over the rules with
you. It is a great way
to enjoy friends and
make new ones!

May 26th, 1:30 p.m. – Brooklyn
June 23rd, 1:30 p.m. – Bridge of Spies
In late 1951, Eilis Lacey, a
young Irish girl, emigrates
to Brooklyn. She is
assured to find a full-time
job there. But the early
days
are
tough,
seasickness being soon
replaced by loneliness and
homesickness,
two
feelings all the more
acutely felt by Eilis for
having had to leave behind
her widowed mother and
her dear sister Rose. She
manages to find her
footing by adapting to her
job as a salesgirl, by
studying bookkeeping at Brooklyn College. And not only
does graduation follow but love shows its face in Tony,
an Italian-American plumber, full of adoration and respect
for her. Rose suddenly dies. Which incites Eilis to return
to Enniscorthy, She gradually gets lured by the charms
of her native place and wooed by Jim Farrell, a young
local.
In 1957, lawyer James B.
Donovan is recruited from his
prestigious law firm to defend
accused Soviet spy Rudolf
Abel. It's an unenviable task
in many respects. Donovan
hasn't practiced criminal law
since he was a prosecutor at
the Nuremburg trials after
World War II. Also, the strong
anti-Communist mood at the
time makes him a target from
who think Abel should just be
executed. Abel is convicted
but Donovan convinces the judge to sentence him to
prison, rather than execute him, as they may at some
point in the future want to swap him for an American spy
the Soviets might have in custody. Just such a scenario
comes into play when in 1960 U-2 spy pilot Francis Gary
Powers is shot down over Soviet territory and taken
prisoner. Donovan is again recruited to act as the
intermediary and negotiate swapping Able for the
American requiring him to travel to East Berlin crossing
the newly built Berlin Wall.

Gleeson. Drama/Romance – Rated PG-13, 1 hr. 51

Hand and Foot is a Canasta variant involving four to six
decks rather than two and is played by teams of two
players (usually two teams, but it also works with three or
four teams). The number of decks used is typically one
more than the number of players, though this can vary.
Due to the larger pool of available cards, it is much easier
to form canastas in Hand and Foot than in standard
Canasta, which changes the strategy considerably.
Some players feel this version is more enjoyable for
beginners.

Adult Coloring
Dates: Thursdays, May 12th and
June 9th
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children.
However, it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults - namely for its de-stressing power. The practice generates
wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to
motor skills, the senses and creativity. Coloring has a destressing effect because when we focus on a particular activity,
we tend to not focus on our worries. It also "brings out our
imagination and takes us back to our childhood, a period in
which we most certainly had a lot less stress."

Yoga is literally translated as “yoke,” meaning to “join
together” or “to unite”. It is an ancient practice that
connects or unites the mind, body and spirit through body
poses, controlled breathing and meditation. Health
benefits include lower blood pressure, improved
circulation and oxygenation, decreased pain, balanced
metabolism, more energy and strength.

Fired Arts Studio
Fired Arts Studio
Fired Arts Program
Open Studio
Because our studio now offers much more than ceramics,
we have renamed it “Fired Arts.” Fired Arts will continue
to offer all of our past options, ceramics and pottery
(earthenware clay, bisque, stoneware, porcelain, glass,
paints, glazes and decals), however, we have expanded
our glass options to include glass fusing.
Hand Building with Clay
Hand building is working with clay by hand using only
simple tools, not the pottery wheel. Before potters had
the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots and clay
forms using their hands, fingers and basic tools. Most
common forms of hand building is pinch, coiling and slab
techniques. Most do not realize the infinite world of hand
building and the artistic possibilities it opens. Watch the
new DVD on hand building with slab techniques! See
Donna or Linda to schedule a viewing.
Monday – Thursday
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (3:45 clean up)
