Pastor’s Message ~ Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lk 18:1-8
And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God
grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay
long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet,
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
There is a puzzle here. “I tell you, God will quickly grant justice to them.” So why then
do we have to “pray always and not lose heart?” Why do we have to persevere? If
God is willing, even eager, to give us what we want, why do we have to keep on asking?
It isn’t about God. There is no reluctance on God's side. Even nature gives you everything it is able to give at the time. The trees don’t begrudge you fruit or shelter, the
fields give you crops, the rivers flow willingly for you, the skies don’t shy away. Likewise our Father in heaven: “If you who are evil, know how to give your children what is
good, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask
him!” (Mt 7:11).
It isn’t about God, it is about us. I once knew someone who would never accept an
invitation until he had been asked twice. He said he wanted to make sure that the
invitation wasn’t given out of mere politeness. This probably freed up his diary remarkably, but he was happy to know that he was wanted when he was invited a second time. We wouldn’t want to say that God is being precious when God lets us ask
again and again. But there is a parallel all the same. I'm afraid we do often ask God
for things out of mere politeness and for the sake of good form. In the ‘Prayers of the
Faithful’ at Mass, especially, we slip easily into this. “For the poor, the old, the
lonely….” How could we take in such a vast swath of human misery in one smooth phrase? I imagine God simply unable
to hear smooth phrases. God listens to the heart, and there is often no echo of heart in the things we pray for.
We don’t really want what we pray for. We want half of it. We want the bit that will make us comfortable. Or we want to
be rid of the things that challenge us, the very things we prayed for yesterday, thinking they would make us comfortable. So we have to ask many times before we know what we want, or before we know with our whole being that we want
it. Would I go through fire and water for it? If not, I don’t really want it; I would like it but I don’t want it. It is the difference
between starving and being ready for your supper. If I really wanted it, God would give it immediately, granting that it was
God's providence for me. “Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do
not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you” (Mark 11:23).
We want half of what we ask for, because we want to remain in control. If we threw ourselves fully behind something we
would feel too vulnerable. We don’t want to lose our grip. But faith means losing our grip, entrusting ourselves, not just a

few details of our affairs, to God.
World Mission Sunday
Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Its
theme this year is “Mercy Changes the World.” Pope
Francis invites the entire Church to support the young
mission diocese in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and
parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve some of the
poorest of the poor. Please keep the
Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.

Refugee News Update
GREAT NEWS!!! The Syrian Aldaba’an family that was to receive household donations from St. Henry parishioners in
2015 has FINALLY!!!! been cleared to travel to the U.S. It is bittersweet news for us, since they are being sent first to Connecticut, where they have family who can help them get their bearings in America. They still want to come to Gresham at
some point, however, so we are hoping some day we will get to meet them. In the meantime, all of the donations we collected in 2015 and 2016 are being used to equip refugee households in Gresham/East Portland, most recently a Syrian
family of 7 that was hosted by a St. Henry parishioner while an apartment was being found.
Encouraged by the generosity and interest of St. Henry parishioners and others in our community, John Baskaron (Arabic
Christian Church pastor), Nancy Molina and others have established the Refugee and Immigrant Hospitality Organization
(RIHO). Our primary goal is to ease the transition to American life by continuing to provide needed household items, and
also to open a local Welcome Center where newcomers can socialize and receive referrals to services, and where longtimers can help welcome them into our community. It’s looking hopeful that by mid-winter our dream will become reality!
In the meantime, the Gresham United Methodist Church has generously donated a very large portion of their basement to
RIHO as a space for us to organize our donations and bring families in to choose what they need. Gresham United Methodist and St. Aidan’s Episcopal have started posting our “needs list” and we will soon start doing the same at St. Henry. In
the meantime if you have items (including furniture) you would like to donate, please contact
Nancy
Molina,
503-730-6079,
[email protected]. Please note, we prefer
new or very gently used articles. Our complete
list is available on request - current particular
needs include larger pots, pans and baking
dishes, twin sheet sets, queen and twin mattress
pads, and all kinds of kitchen utensils.
If you are interested in welcoming refugees and
immigrants to our community we can put you to
work. At the present time, we could really use
help moving furniture every couple of weeks, and
also assistance from anyone who has strong skills
in outreach and marketing. Please contact Nancy
Molina (phone and email above) if you can help.

~ Stewardship ~ 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“…be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient...”
2 Timothy 4:2
It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world
get in the way. Now add our own pride and ego into the equation and living a stewardship lifestyle may be downright uncomfortable! Remember, God didn’t call us to be comfortable. He called us to be faithful.

Planning Study
Dear Parishioners,
We need your input!
Beginning Oct. 17 we are conducting a comprehensive survey of the entire parish. This planning
study follows an extensive process that helped produce our master plan. Before we make any final
decisions regarding the long-range plan for St. Henry Catholic Church, we need to hear from you.
You will all be asked to share your thoughts regarding our needs and the possibility of conducting
a major fundraising effort. Your feedback will enable us to determine potential support for the master plan projects. If we, as a faith community, choose to move forward, the planning study will also
provide us with information to identify prospective campaign leaders and to establish a realistic
campaign goal.
The Steier Group, our development firm, will compile this information and present it to our parish
leadership. At that time, we will make an informed decision regarding the implementation of our
master plan.
I believe that this process is extremely important, and I encourage every parish family to participate. Your input is valuable as we plan for the future of St. Henry Catholic Church.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Charles Zach
Comfort the Afflicted
The work of mercy highlighted for October is comfort the afflicted. Pope
Francis echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah, when he writes in
Misericordiae Vultus : “if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy
the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and
your gloom be as the noonday.” (MV 17). The Holy Father reminds us of
this call to be “close to the lonely and afflicted” (MV 15). During the week
of October 15-21, we encourage the faithful to reach out in some way to
those who are suffering. Offer a word of encouragement, write a card, or
spend some time with someone who is struggling. It might be someone who is sick, who has lost a
loved one, who is facing a difficult transition or someone who is simply down. For a list of ideas and
to learn more about comforting the afflicted, please visit http://www.pdxmercy.org/october .
