The Art of Healing:
On display at GFH every hour of every day
A newborn’s healthy cry brings tears of joy
to her parent’s eyes.
A cardiologist’s skilled and steady hands
open a clogged artery and calm the fears of a waiting family.
A surgeon removes a life-threatening
blood clot through a tiny incision in the back
of a knee.
A mother of three learns the cancer is
gone, and clutches her doctor’s hand.
In the corridor connecting the West Lobby
and the Northwest Tower there is a new exhibit,
“The Art of Healing.” Striking photographs
taken by photographer Sarah Smith illustrating
our staff using the tools of the trade with their
patients are positioned next to three screens
created from the artwork of local elementary
school students. The Glens Falls Hospital
Foundation has chosen “The Art of Healing”
as the theme for the 2015 Annual Fund
Campaign because it is what the hospital
does every hour of every day.

GFH Investing $25 Million in Patient Care & Comfort
Everywhere I go, people ask: How are things
at the hospital?
I love that question. It shows that there is a
real understanding about the challenges faced
by not-for-profit hospitals today, and that there’s
genuine interest in ensuring that Glens Falls
Hospital continues to provide high-quality care and
thousands of good-paying jobs for years to come.
I’m pleased to tell you that things are going
quite well.
Over the past two years, employees from
across the hospital have implemented a threepart strategy to: continuously improve the quality
of patient care and comfort; build stronger, more
collaborative relationships with area physicians
and other community partners; and strengthen
the hospital’s financial performance. All three
prongs of this strategy are inextricably linked.
You cannot achieve one without the others. We
are achieving all three.
As a result of our improved performance,
our Board of Governors had the confidence this
year to approve $25 million in investments that
will advance patient care and improve the overall
patient and visitor experience.
Most recently we added a nextgeneration Interventional Radiology System.
Interventional Radiology is a medical specialty
in which doctors view live X-ray images to
guide tiny instruments through the body for
procedures that would otherwise require surgery.

We also recently added a second new linear
accelerator at The C. R. Wood Cancer Center.
Radiation Oncologist Dr. Frazier Taylor is shown with
the new linear accelerator at The C. R. Wood Cancer
Center at Glens Falls Hospital.
This new technology delivers cancer-destroying
radiation to tumors more precisely than ever,
improving treatments in hard-to-reach areas of
the body, reducing radiation exposure to healthy
tissue and organs, and allowing for greater
doses and reduced treatment times.

Community Events Play Critical Role
in Raising Funds for Cancer Center Programs
Throughout the year individuals and
community organizations hold events that
benefit the C. R. Wood Cancer Center support
programs. The following are just a few
examples of wonderful community fund raisers.
Last summer the Glens Falls Tae Kwon
Do studio’s 25th Annual Board Break-a-thon
raised $21,234 for Cindy’s Comfort Camp, an
overnight camp for youth who have experienced
the death or serious illness of a parent or sibling.
When winter has its tightest grip on our
region, cancer survivor Donna Brockway and
her friend, Karen LaRose bring upwards of
90 snowmobile enthusiasts together for the
Purple Ribbon Cancer Ride. This year’s ride
raised $19,500 for Randy’s Patient Assistance
Fund which helps patients and families with
unexpected cancer treatment expenses.
The 38th annual South High Marathon
Dance donated $20,000 to Randy’s Patient
Assistance Fund and Cindy’s Comfort Camp.

$3,800 for Cindy’s Retreats, which enables
women who are living with – and beyond –
cancer to set aside their stresses and focus on

The Snuggery: 30 Years of Special Deliveries
Glens Falls Hospital is celebrating a special
BIRTHday. The Snuggery, the hospital’s familycentered birthing center, is turning 30.
When The Snuggery opened in 1985, it
was one of the nation’s first single-room LaborDelivery-Recovery-Postpartum birthing centers.
Today, families continue to experience all phases
of the natural birthing process in one private
room, with one nurse assigned to care for both
mom and baby.
More than 40,000 families have welcomed new arrivals
at The Snuggery. Shown here are Eric and Chelsea

The Snuggery is a family-centered birthing
center, where the entire birthing process is
personalized as much as possible. Staff work
with expectant parents and their doctor or
midwife months in advance of the special day to
develop a Birth Plan that meets their individual
needs and desires. Parents are also able to
participate in a wide variety of educational
programs before and after the birth.
Three area obstetrical practices deliver
at The Snuggery: Women’s Care, Glens Falls
OB/GYN and North Country Obstetrics &
Gynecology. Women wishing to give birth at
The Snuggery are encouraged to develop a
relationship with one of these practices prior to
or at the time of her pregnancy. n
President’s Corner continued
Earlier this year, we made a major investment
in patient comfort and safety with the installation
of 132 new in-patient beds. Still to come is a
major renovation of the West Entrance and Lobby
that will improve the flow of patients registering
for outpatient laboratory and medical imaging
services, and provide an overall more welcoming
experience.

Our successes in the areas of patient safety
and satisfaction are also noteworthy.
We have made significant progress in
reducing the number of patient falls and the
incidences of patients acquiring infections while
hospitalized. We have also made strong gains in
— and continue to focus on — improved patient
satisfaction in our Emergency Department, one
of the busiest areas of the hospital.
At the same time, we continue to build
stronger partnerships with other area healthcare
providers. These include closer collaboration
with Hudson Headwaters Health Network,
and partnerships with physicians to form new
comprehensive Urology and Ear, Nose and
Throat specialty practices.

Department of Surgery expanded its focus on
minimally invasive procedures with the purchase
of a daVinci robot. The new technology has
many patient benefits including minimal pain and
scarring, lower blood loss and faster recovery.

For physicians, robotically assisted
surgery provides increased dexterity, precision
and greater visibility, plus the ability to do
more complicated procedures. This type of
technology is a mainstay in today’s surgical
training and is a necessary tool for recruiting
new physicians to replace retiring doctors.
Fast forward to June 2015 and to date over
200 procedures have been done using the daVinci
robot in gynecology, urology and general surgery.

Since our founding in 1897, through the investment and involvement of local people,
the history of Glens Falls Hospital is testament to what our community can accomplish.
The Hospital could not have become the comprehensive institution it is today without
private philanthropic support. Since our inception, people have contributed to our growth
and therefore, the growth and health of the community.
For more than a decade we have acknowledged those who have shared their intentions to
include Glens Falls Hospital in their estate plans. This group is an integral part of our community. They look to advance the

It Takes a Community to
Renovate a Loving Home
February 2015 marked the re-opening of
Amanda’s House! Last fall thirty Great Escape
staff members painted, replaced the furnace
and hot water heater, and tackled yard work. In
addition, the Adirondack Regional Chamber of
Commerce’s Leadership Class raised a total of
$50,476 for the project.
Leadership Adirondack worked closely with
community partners. The Adirondack Flames,
Ronald McDonald House Charities, Glens Falls
Foundation, Barton International and many
other organizations and individuals generously
supported the effort. In-kind donations were
garnered from businesses like Bare Bones
Furniture, LaFlamme’s, Telescope Casual
Furniture and Northeast Promotions Group.
The house is named in memory of Amanda
Cafaro, who died of leukemia in 1998, and
modeled after the nationally recognized Ronald

McDonald House. The home includes three
bedrooms for guests, a large kitchen, and
a common area and landscaped backyard
for socializing. Amanda’s House serves
as a home away from home for family
members needing lodging while assisting
with a loved one’s care and for patients
who require multiple-day outpatient
treatments. House manager, Kevin Baxter
is happy to report over 200 guest nights
have been provided already in 2015. n
2015 Golf Tournament Raises $119,500
A record $119,500 was raised for The
C. R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls
Hospital at the 7th annual Cindy & Skeets Glens
Falls Hospital Cancer Day Golf Tournament, held
July 10 at the Glens Falls Country Club.
More than 200 golfers and 130 sponsors
and donors supported the tournament, which
has raised nearly $700,000 for support programs
for cancer patients and family members since its
inception in 2009.
Major sponsorship for this year’s tournament
was provided by Stuart Ginsburg and Glens Falls
Challenge Grant
The Charles R. Wood Foundation made
a $125,000 gift to the expansion of the
oncology pharmacy at The C. R. Wood Cancer
Center, and has committed a second $125,000
Matching Grant if the community gives an equal
amount to the project.
Pharmacists will be able to safely increase
the amount of chemotherapy drugs they prepare,
providing improved service to patients at a time
when patient volume at the Cancer Center is
increasing, and also ensure that the pharmacy is
able to comply with changing federal regulations.
“More than 1,000 new cases of cancer are
treated at Glens Falls Hospital each year, and
the oncology pharmacy is an invaluable part of
the care those patients receive,” said President
& CEO Dianne Shugrue. “We are thrilled that the
Wood Foundation has chosen to support this
important project, and we look forward to our
community’s help in meeting the challenge.” n

Woodbury who supported the Cancer Center in

Community Events Play Critical Role
in Raising Funds for Cancer Center Programs
When winter has its tightest grip on our
region cancer survivor Donna Brockway and
her friend, Karen LaRose bring upwards of
90 snowmobile enthusiasts together for the
Purple Ribbon Cancer Ride. This year’s ride
raised $19,500 for Randy’s Patient Assistance
Fund which helps patients and families with
unexpected cancer treatment expenses. Donna
and Karen’s enthusiasm is shared by many
other individuals and organizations who help
raise critical funds for the C. R. Wood Cancer
Center’s patient programs.
Last summer the Glens Falls Tae Kwon
Do studio 25th Annual Board Break-a-thon
raised $21,234 for Cindy’s Comfort Camp, an
overnight camp for youth who have experienced
the death or serious illness of a parent or
sibling. The 38th annual South High Marathon
Dance donated $20,000 to Randy’s Patient
Assistance Fund and Cindy’s Comfort Camp.

The Snuggery: 30 Years of Special Deliveries
Glens Falls Hospital is celebrating a special
BIRTHday.
The Snuggery, the hospital’s family-centered
birthing center, is turning 30.
When The Snuggery opened in 1985, it
was one of the nation’s first single-room LaborDelivery-Recovery-Postpartum birthing centers.
Today, families continue to experience all phases
of the natural birthing process in one private
room, with one nurse assigned to care for both
mom and baby.
The Snuggery is a family-centered birthing
center, where the entire birthing process is

personalized as much as possible. Staff work
with expectant parents and their doctor or
midwife months in advance of the special day to
develop a Birth Plan that meets their individual
needs and desires. Parents are also able to
participate in a wide variety of educational
programs before and after the birth.
Three area obstetrical practices deliver
at The Snuggery: Women’s Care, Glens Falls
OB/GYN and North Country Obstetrics &
Gynecology. Women wishing to give birth at
The Snuggery are encouraged to develop a
relationship with one of these practices prior to
or at the time of her pregnancy. n
