partnerships and community collaborations. We make all KL programs
accessible by never turning away any youth or communities with needs that KL
or its collaborative partners can meet.
Vision:
Kuumba Lynx works to liberate the lives of Chicago youth, using art and
performance to instill leadership, collaboration, resiliency, responsibility,
confidence, and a love of learning. Through consistent year-round youth
development, social justice and arts activities, our ultimate aim is to
equip vibrant young minds with the essential tools for enduring success
in life.
Goals:
1. Grow our own collective of grassroots Hip Hop educators. Supporting
these emerging practitioners as art makers and facilitators of Hip Hop art
and culture. Where they are exposed to pathways and provided
performance, teaching & transitional leadership opportunities as well as
resources for creating, branding & promoting new works.
2. Galvanize Chicago youth and their communities around critical literacy
that strengthens their literacy and engages them beyond reading &
writing into knowledge of self and community, as well as the applicable
practice around issues of equity including education, health, arts &
culture, and civic engagement. Meeting youth where they are so as to
encourage active engagement with the discourse each day through
Hip Hop arts.
3. Nurture youth leadership through collaborations with citywide institutions to engage their genuine voice & collective lens; placing leadership
spaces at the center of learning and providing opportunities for youth to
drive programming and decision making processes.

The best advice for me was to just go do it- jump on stage and
express yourself. Going to HPP activities and eventually competing in
the slam, then joining KLPE at Clarendon Park and taking up music
production & recording with Elgin Bokari, DJ Dishwasha and Solar

me about family and how to work through our personalities. When

college or university then sat out for peer to peer learning
and community building. Their daily routine included
critical math and humanities workshops, peace circles,
community building activities, arts making, college and
career readiness, and curriculum inquiry.
Each week participants would spend their mornings,
exploring self care, personal purpose, and community
visions all while strengthening their math and reading
skill sets. In the afternoons, they gained arts making and
technology skills by selecting two intensives that
included dance, mural painting, music production, slam
poetry, videography, theatre, journalism, basketball,
soccer, volleyball and or swimming. Each week ended with
a community outing such as neighborhood mural tours and
theatre performances.

1 Luv Fest
Since 1997 we have been collaborating with various
community partners and business’ to produce a youth
centered Hip Hop arts, culture and resistance festival
featuring live mural painting and performances. This year
emcees included Bella Bahs, FM Supreme, Jahleigh,
Rebel Diaz, and Ethos, an emcee, poetry, and dance
battle. The day began with a traditional healing circle
lead by the American Indian Center Positive Paths youth.
The opening ceremony was followed by a youth panel
coordinated in partnership with Desi youth project,
