Maps of AOD seasonal averages for 1997-2010 retrieved from SeaWIFS present the overall distributions of dust and
anthropogenic pollution aerosols over source regions. Evident are distinct intra- and inter-seasonal variability patterns.

 In early July 2002, ~85 wildfires in province of Quebec destroyed ~1,000
km2 of forest land, at locations ~1000 km northwest Boston. In late May
2010, ~50 wildfires burned ~880 km2 of forest land, at locations ~700 km
northwest Boston.
 Backward air trajectories indicate that the smoke plumes originated from
wildfire areas in Quebec, Canada passed through the US upper states in
both 2002 and 2010
Impact on O3 in Northeastern US
Smoke days
Adjacent days
 O3 measurement: 153 U.S. EPA sites and 112 Canada NAPS sites
 Increase of at least 10 ppbv O3 8hr max in Northeastern US.
 Significant enhancements observed in rural (North Toronto) and urban
areas (NYC, Philadelphia)
Impact on PM species in Boston
Wildfire
2010 Episode
 PM2.5 and PM10 increased to 151
and 165 μg/m3, respectively
 Most species. except for SO42-,
were enhanced: PM2.5, PM10,
PM2.5/PM10 , OC, EC, BC,
Some elements (K, Cl, Zn Br,
and Mn).
 Of species, OC enhancement was
the most dominant; in particular,
OC3, pyrolysis carbon, and EC1,
which are likely related with
pyrolysis of structural
components of wood.

