Highlights
With an awesome array of new releases
spanning drama, animation and action
along with award-winning television and
classic films, there’s simply not enough
time to enjoy all the entertainment on offer
on board SAA flights.
Having done very well at the box-office and earning
several Academy Award nominations, a sequel to the
3D animation feature Rio was always in the offing.
Featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx
and Anne Hathaway, the film told the tale of a blue
macaw shipped off to mate in Rio de Janiero. This
time around, parents Blu and Jewel along with their
kids trek to the Amazon in order to assist Blu’s former
owner Linda Gunderson is finding a spix macaw. The
second the series as is entertaining as its predecessor
as evidenced by another strong box-office performance
– entertaining viewing for kids and adults alike.
In the fast lane, Need for Speed is a gearhead funfest.
Directed by Scott Waugh and featuring Aaron Paul and
Dominic Cooper, the real “stars” of the film may well be
the Koenigsegg Agera R, Mercedes Benz SLR Mclaren
and most especially the Ford Shelby Mustang. Paul
plays Tobey Marshall, a former race-car driver making
a living tuning performance cars. A former rival Dino
Brewster (Cooper) offers Marshall a job restoring a
rare Ford Mustang. Marshall will earn a percentage of
the sale price for his efforts. Against his crew’s advice,
he agrees to the project. Post completion, Brewster
proposes another wager based around a street race
between the two adversaries. During the challenge,
another racer is killed and Marshall is incarcerated for
manslaughter. Released on parole, he aims to avenge
the death and put matters to right.

Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier
More than fifty years ago, cinemagoers were first
introduced to the suave British secret service agent
007. The year was 1962, the film was Dr. No, the actor
was Sean Connery and the secret agent was Bond,
James Bond. And it would be misplaced not to mention
the wonderful Ursula Andress who in the role of Honey
Ryder embodied the unattainable “Bond girl.” The
franchise has been recently updated with Daniel Craig
in the role of Bond, but some of the charm of the early
movie versions of the Ian Fleming novels has been
lost. Connery’s dapper swagger and his strong Scottish
accent are possibly as close as a movie actor will get
to the real essence of Bond. Suspend disbelief, cast
a blind eye to the dated special effects, and simply
imagine yourself as 007.
With the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil gripping
football fans around the globe, How Much Is Enough
provides a fascinating insight into the shenanigans that
fill the off-season as managers and agents seek the best
deals for their footballing charges. Rod Hay’s excellent
documentary charts the course of the modern game and
its transfer system that offers massive financial rewards
for sportsmen and manipulative managers alike.
Debuting in 2011, Suits’ Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel
Macht as lawyers at New York firm Pearson Hardman.
Macht’s character Harvey Specter has to hire a Harvard
educated associate, but instead opts for a brilliant college
dropout. He has to keep the secret from an arch-rival at
the firm who smells a scam and is highly suspicious. The
series is far removed from stiff courtroom television ala
L.A. Law and offers an intriguing mix of legal mischiefs
and demanding personalities.
This is the briefest tour of SAA’s broad assortment of
on-board entertainment. Press the menu button and

Divergent
Divergent
Grand Piano
Adventure, Action– 139 min
Based on the novel by Veronica Roth, Divergent is another successful film
franchise aimed at the young adult market. The Hunger Games and the
rockstar performance of Jennifer Lawrence have already set the benchmark
in this particular genre. Divergent seeks to explore similar themes including
the search for one’s identity and the difficulties that come with not fitting in.
These issues resonate strongly with teenagers at whom this film is ultimately aimed, but strong performances by Shailene Woodley, Theo James and
Kate Winslet make it worthwhile viewing for any moviegoer.
Set in Chicago a hundred years from the present day, society is divided
into five distinct groups. A serum-based aptitude test administered to 16
year-olds decides whether an individual will be a member of Abnegation
(the selfless folk who run the government), Amity, Candor, Dauntless and
Erudite. Beatrice Prior (Woodley) has grown up as a member of the Abnegation group, but the test finds elements of various groups in her make up.
She is warned never to reveal the results of the test as they would mark her
“Divergent” – these individuals are seen as worrisome for the government
as they are able to express individual thought rather than following pre-determined sets of social rules.
Having always been fascinated by Dauntless, Beatrice decides to choose
this group. In order to assist her with the transition, an instructor by the
name of Four (James) is assigned. During her training, various assessments
are performed. Having changed her name to Tris, Woodley’s character
achieves success even in tasks not usually associated with the Dauntless
group. Four guesses that she has multiple personality elements and having
developed a fondness for her, he also warns her to conceal
her “divergence.”
The story moves swiftly towards a showdown, and Woodley and James
morph into believable action heroes. However, much of the book’s slowburn is missing as the screenwriters attempt to streamline the story and
create memorable movie “moments.” And while the film has performed
admirably at US and worldwide box-offices, it’s questionable as to whether
a slightly more nuanced and probing version of the book would have attracted more converts along with those new to the Divergent series. At the very
least, this enjoyable feature may have viewers downloading the book to their
Kindle in an instant.

South Africa’s official entry for the foreign
language category at the 2014 Oscars,
Four Corners plays out in the badlands
just outside of Cape Town. We spoke with
director Ian Gabriel and actor Irshaad Ally.
Airscape: Four Corners is an earnest look at the mean-streets
of the Cape Flats. How was the story conceived?
Ian:
We wanted to tell a story that took us on a journey,
introduced the idea of a young boy facing the
challenge of coming of age in a situation where
he’d be put to the test by the circumstances
around him. We also wanted to look at the
question of youth and absentee fathers, telling a
story about a man who has been released from
prison and is looking for his son seemed a good,
fresh way to approach this story.

to deliver their roles?
Irshaad: Ian Gabriel is a very insightful guy so he cast
people whom he knew had some relationship
with whatever character they had to play - in my
opinion. Ian is also the easiest director I’ve ever
worked with. He has a very charismatic way
about him so he gets you to do things for him
effortlessly - he also allows for a lot of your own input. He constantly wanted to know what I thought
or how I feel about something. So he listened to
me more...which is strange because he was the
director - but also effective because it made me
feel comfortable.
