President’s Message
Hello Parkland members;
It looks like spring is trying to break through
but there is still a chill in the air. I know a lot
of us are looking forward to gardening, golfing
and generally enjoying the warmer weather of
summer, as short as it is in this part of the
world. I hope this finds you all in good health
although we know as we get older that this is
not always the case.
I would like to welcome the many new members
who have signed up to join the Heritage Club
this past year, I am certain you will enjoy the
benefits that come with membership. Without
new members the Heritage Club could not
continue.
Once again I have the sad task of
acknowledging the passing of one of our
original Heritage Club members. Mr. Ed Kieller
was the original secretary of Parkland Chapter
and served on the executive until he stepped
down a few years ago. Ed dedicated many
hours to this organization and was an avid
volunteer especially with the Literacy program.
He, along with his wife Mary, were always
available and willing to help in any way they
could for the betterment of the club. Ed will
be missed by all who knew him.

Post Offices of Central and Northern Alberta.
This issue will start a series of historical
looks at post offices in Central and
Northern Alberta. Over the years more
than two thirds of the original post offices
in Alberta have closed. Many of them have
very interesting histories. For this issue, I
have taken at random 3 post offices that
have now closed, and 3 that remain open,
and provide a bit of history for each.
Much of this history is taken from a book
titled “Post Offices of Alberta 1876 –
1986”, written by Neil Hughes of Edmonton.
Sadly Mr. Hughes passed away in 2013. Mr.
Hughes was an avid stamp and postmark
collector. He spent 3 summers in the 1980’s
travelling Alberta stopping at all the
current and former post offices, collecting
information about the office origin and
history. I have also used the Government of
Canada Library and Archives, and in some
cases municipal websites and Wikipedia to
verify and complete the information.
If you are aware of any errors or omissions
in the histories presented here, please let
us know. Also if there is a post office you
would like to see featured in these articles,
please let us know. We can be contacted by
email at [email protected], or
by mail at Heritage Club, 12135 – 149 St.

Closed Post Offices
Hercules AB.
Opened 1913
Closed 1969.
–
A small hamlet in Strathcona County a little
south-east of the present day Anthony
Henday and Highway 14 interchange. Was
also the post office for the hamlet of
Bretona. The hamlet was named after the
first postmaster E. Hercules Murphy.
Other postmasters were Michael Murphy,
Sep Savage, Joe Weismantel, and the last
Postmaster Daniel Teske (1956 – 1969)
Mapova AB.
Opened 1930
Closed 1968
–
A small farming area 10 miles west south
west of Newbrook AB. The post office name
was derived from the first letter of the
names of the first 3 settlers in the area,
Musklak, Alho and Povawick.
The first
postmaster was George MacGregor. Other
postmasters were Charles Schick, Leo
Hemming, Joan Alho, and the last
postmaster Violet Turner (1965 – 1968)
Venice AB
Opened 1916
Closed 1970
–
A small hamlet on the rail line south west of
Lac La Biche near Lake Missawawi. The post
office was named by the first Postmaster
Olive Jos Peter Biollo who came from Italy
in 1902. Other postmasters were Miss
Regina Biollo, Mrs. Annie Biollo, Mrs. Della
Piquette, Mrs. Elizabeth Fornari, and the
last Postmaster was Mrs. Fleurange
Lefebvre (1963 – 1970).
Current Post Offices
New Sarepta AB.
Opened 1905
A village south east of Edmonton on Highway
21. The village is named after the biblical town
of Sarepta, a Phoenician city on the
Mediterranean coast between Sidon and Tyre,
mentioned several times in the bible including
The Book of Kings, and Luke’s Gospel. Many
may recall the Edmonton Journal cartoonist
Yardley Jones often featured New Sarepta,
often asking where is Old Sarepta? – so now
you know. The first postmaster was P.Elliott
from 1905 to 1913. The post office was
temporarily closed in 1913, and then reopened
in the same year with Rev R. Reimer as the
postmaster. Other postmasters were Gustave
Henkleman, Alice Knopp, John Knopp and
Myrtle Lehman.
Altario AB.
Opened 1911
A small community on Highway 12 near the
Alberta Saskatchewan border about 50km
east of Consort AB. Originally on the railway
line that served that area. The post office
name was derived by a combination of the
names Alberta and Ontario. The community
had previously been called Wilhelmina, after
the daughter of the first postmaster. The
name was deemed too hard to spell, so the
village was renamed in 1914 first to Bideford,
then Saskalta, and finally to Altario. The first
postmaster
was
P.
Robinson.
Other
postmasters were Duncan McLeod, David
Thomas, Palmer Swanson, Frank Formanek,
Agnes Kreiser, James Donovan, Audrey Coates,
Rolf Mandseth and Clifford Long
Innisfree AB.
Opened 1905
A small community on Highway 16 (Yellowhead)
about midway between Vegreville and
Vermillion. The Post Office was originally
opened as Delnorte, but the town was renamed
in 1907 to Innisfree.
After the Canadian Northern Railway was
completed, Sir Edmund Walker, then President
of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, made a
cross Canada tour of the area on the newly
completed railway. Upon stopping in Delnorte,
he was taken on a tour by James Hunter,
mayor of the village. They walked to the top of
the hill to the south of the village where a
considerable area could be viewed, and the
story goes that Sir Edmund was very
impressed with the beautiful view and Birch
Lake. He stated that it reminded him very
much of the Scottish town of Innisfree.
Mayor Hunter is reported to have stated that
the town would welcome a branch of the
Canadian Bank of Commerce.
Sir Edmund
assured him this could be arranged, if the
name of the village would be changed from
Delnorte to Innisfree. The bank was
subsequently built and is currently being used
as the Innisfree Prairie Bank of Commerce
Museum
The first postmaster was John Norris. Other
postmasters were Bruce Gibbons, Rand
Gibbons, Percy Thompson, Bill Taylor, Lessia
Napora and Henry Stasiuk
Did you Know ?
If a worker ant has found a good source of food, it leaves a scented trail that other
ants can follow. Sweeping or mopping is not enough to eliminate the scent. Instead
mix one part vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle, then spritz whenever
you see ants.
The Cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. In a mere 2.5 seconds it can
accelerate to a speed of 70 kilometers per hour, and it can reach a top speed of 100
kilometers an hour, but cannot sustain this speed for long.

Words to Live by:

Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

Don't take yourself too seriously. No one else does.

No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
You know your children are growing up when they stop asking you where they came from, and
start refusing to tell you where they’re going.
