There are a few tickets remaining for this year’s President’s Dinner
at the Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on
Saturday 9 May. All OWs and wives/partners are welcome to attend.
Tickets
The Mary Rose was built in 1510 and was in service for 34 years
before she sank in 1545. She was rediscovered in 1971, raised in
1982 and is now in the final stages of conservation in a stunning and
unique museum.

The story of the Mary Rose spans almost 500 years. Before dinner,
guests will have the opportunity to explore the Museum at leisure,
finding out about the ship, her crew and the thousands of artefacts
that have been recovered from the wreck site.

Historic Dockyard. From here it is a ten minute,
level walk, through the Dockyard, to the Mary Rose
Museum. Comfortable shoes and a coat/umbrella are

opportunity to tour the Museum, at your leisure. Guides
will be on hand throughout the exhibition. Drinks may be
taken around the Museum.
19:45Four course dinner and coffee in the Admiral’s Gallery.
From the Admiral’s Gallery guests also have access to
the Bridge Balcony, which offers uninterrupted views of
HMS Victory and the Harbour.

Parking
The nearest 24 hour car park is at Gunwharf Quays, which is a five
minute walk from the main entrance to the Dockyard. After 18.00 there
is also limited on-street parking along Queen St.
Coach
Organised minibus travel to and from Warwick School is available. It will
leave Warwick School at 15:00 and expect to return at 01:30. Costs are
likely to be in the region of £25-£52 per person, depending on numbers.

1940s-60s School House Dinner
The Pyne Room (Big School) – Friday 4 September 2015
Over sixty boarders from the 1940s to 1960s have already signed up
for the School House Dinner on Friday 4 September. There are still
places available, so do book soon if you would like to come to this
very special evening.
Relax with old friends. Meet boarders you may not have seen for many
decades. Share anecdotes and memories from those special days.
Former masters Ralph Thornton and Ken Freeborn are among those
invited as special guests.
The evening will begin with a short service in Warwick School Chapel, little
changed since the 1940s.

The event is for OWs only (no wives/partners). Tickets, £28, include predinner drinks and a three course dinner with coffee. There will be a cash

1985 Rugby Tour to Zimbabwe – 30 year reunion
The Pyne Room, Warwick School – Saturday 5 September 2015
All those who went on the Warwick School 1985 Rugby Tour to
Zimbabwe are warmly invited to join Brian Emmerson, back at
School, for a 30 year reunion.
If you would like to sign up, please complete the booking form on page

£12 to cover the lunch. There will also be a cash bar.
The reunion, on Saturday 5 September 2015 at 12:30, will take the
form of an informal drinks reception and lunch in the Pyne Room (the
library in the 1980s), followed by the opportunity to watch the current
1st XV play their first match of the season and have a tour of the
School. Malaria pills and match-fitness no longer required.
The School has no photos from the 1985 tour, just a record in the

Spring Golf Day – Tues 19 May
Join other golfers at the Spring OW Golf Meeting at Tadmarton

OW Cross Country
The Thames Hare and Hounds 62nd Alumni Race was a first for
OW veterans Jack Thornton (WS 1951-58), Dave Phillips (WS 195561) and Martin Garrett (WS 1965-72).
The race, five miles up and over Wimbledon Common in early
December, was across very tough terrain, through woods and
along muddy trails.
Simon Wurr (WS 1988-95) has run the race many times (winning
it in 2007, 2010 and 2013) but this was the first time, as far as
we’re aware, that an OW team had competed. For Jack Thornton
especially, getting fit and taking part was a great personal challenge.
His wrong turn through the woods has made him even more
determined to take part in 2015.
Many congratulations to the OW team, who were placed third in
the Over 60s race (despite the wrong turn!). The chaps are keen
to compete again in 2015 and the anticipated date for the race
is Saturday 12 December. If any OWs would like to join the team
(unlimited numbers of any age can compete), please register your
interest by emailing Anne Douglas on [email protected].
The day will follow the usual format of Edinburgh foursomes
in the morning and an individual stableford in the afternoon, to
allow members who only wish to play 18 holes the chance to
participate in the afternoon.
The charge will be £70 for 36 holes or £60 for 18 holes (includes
lunch, 3 course dinner, green fees and prizes).

Worcester Warriors
Ben Howard (WS 2001-11) has been enjoying
a good season with Worcester Warriors, playing
regularly for the first team at full back and wing.
The Club continues its plans to work with young
rugby players across the West Midlands and has
launched its fifth Junior Academy Centre – this time
based at Warwick School.

enjoyed by many at St Mary’s Church in March.

The Warwick School Hall Campaign
The Pyne Room at full capacity, 1966.
Warwick School’s story is one of growth, aspiration and the pursuit
of excellence. It has developed from a small school of 300 boys
in the 1920s to a bustling community of over 1,200 students
and 150 staff today. We consistently achieve high standards in a
variety of areas, from academic results to dramatic and musical
accomplishment, and sporting success. Our buildings and facilities
offer boys tremendous opportunities and need to continually improve
and evolve in order to match the growth and high standards of the
School.

Big School, now the Pyne Room, served as the original Assembly
Hall for the School until the Guy Nelson Hall was built in 1970. The
Guy Nelson Hall has been the focal point of School life and heart
of the community for five decades. Sadly, the hall is no longer fit
for purpose and, quite simply, we can no longer accommodate the
School in one place.
Work has begun on an exciting new Hall to serve current and future
generations of boys. The new Warwick School Hall will be a 1,000
seat auditorium with the finest acoustics, facilities and adaptable
space. It will be able to host whole Senior School assemblies,
examinations, concerts, dinners and special events.
The new Warwick School Hall will cost £7.5 million, of which the
School has committed £6.4 million. Our goal is to raise the additional
£1.1 million to make the Hall the best it can be.

Dan Dalton MEP
Law and Finance Networking Dinner
Twelve OW professionals, who work in Law or Finance, returned to School in early February for
a new networking initiative run by the Careers and Development and Alumni Departments. The
Dinner gave forty boys, considering a career in Law or Finance, an ideal opportunity to gather
information, discuss options and make some great contacts. A huge thank you to OWs who
gave their valuable time and shared their knowledge and expertise with these young men.
Dan Dalton (OW 1987-92) became an MEP
for the West Midlands in January 2015. Prior
to entering politics, Dan was a professional
cricketer for Warwickshire and a cricket coach.
He was a policy adviser for the ECR group in the
European Parliament before becoming an MEP.

Chris Guyver (WS 1969-80) has
been elected by the Club membership
to the MCC Committee for a three
year term from 1 October 2015.
Chris took four wickets playing for

series after a 20 year career spent
as a political lobbyist.

Spotlight on…
Mark Evans (WS 1974-81)
Despite school reports which spoke of a boy who “organises himself
well and keeps several balls in the air at the same time”, Mark may well
have disappointed and infuriated his A level teachers. Having been a
model O Level student, he spent much of the Sixth Form restoring cars,
including a Triumph Herald 1360 Convertible. His initial failure to get into
vet school made him even more determined and he spent a solitary
year studying and working in Warwick town library, retaking his A Levels
and earning a place at the Royal Veterinary College in London.

Mark Evans (WS 1974-81) is easy to like but not an easy man to
describe… at once enthusiastic animal lover, passionate engineer,
trusted vet and scientist, prolific author and popular broadcaster. He is
the well-known face of Channel 4’s science and animal programmes,
the presenter of the BAFTA-winning Inside Nature’s Giants and
Discovery’s record-breaking Is Born series. He has made over 1,000
films, from horse biology to the human genome and from the Big Foot
Files in Russia to Everest Base Camp, interspersed with a myriad
of DIY, gardening, lifestyle and wildlife programmes.
Mark Evans is even less easy to pin down. His filming now takes him
all over the world and his current commitments range from work on
the behaviour and psychology of dogs, filming behind the scenes at
Jaguar Land Rover, Coventry and a trip to the Himalayas with the
world’s greatest living climber. He promises to return to Warwick
School when his schedule allows, to share his amazing and inspiring
story with today’s boys.

Mark qualified as a vet in 1987 and loved working in private practice.
In 1990, his career took an unexpected turn. Late for work one day,
he glimpsed an appeal to find the fattest cat in Britain on TV-am.
Angry with what he saw as highly irresponsible broadcasting, Mark
tracked down and tackled the programme’s producer. He was
invited onto the show and this camera-shy man, who provided stage
lighting behind the scenes in the Guy Nelson Hall, found himself in the
spotlight on prime time TV. Surprisingly to Mark, the programme was
incredibly well received. His integrity and talent were recognised and
TV offers began to come in.
Mark juggled broadcasting with practising as a vet for many years
but, for most of the last two decades, producing and presenting TV
documentaries has been his main focus. Although, from 2007 to 2010
he was also the RSPCA’s Chief Vet. His passion and enthusiasm for
animals and how things work have been matched with fantastic filming
and travel opportunities. One of his proudest achievements was the
18 films made for Inside Nature’s Giants.
Mark Evans is easy to admire. He is pursuing an amazing career with
hard work, passion, an inquisitive nature and a bit of luck. Forty years ago
his form master Barry Young summed up his start at Warwick School
with “Full of enthusiasm, works hard… a good all-rounder”. Mark Evans
may well have infuriated his A Level teachers, but he did not disappoint.

College, Oxford were reunited at the College
Classics’ Dinner, late 2014.
Psychotherapist Jonathan James (WS 1966-74) has published an e-book, Mel Pepper
and the Meaning of Wife, a novel about a young woman married to a man she
doesn’t love and her efforts to break free. Downloadable from Amazon or through
www.melpepper.com. Listen out, too, for Jonathan who is a newsreader on the
BBC World Service. Jonathan goes under the professional name of Jonathan Izard.

Tim Coombs (WS 1967-77), Managing Director
of Aviation Economics, made a welcome return to
School recently. Tim spoke with boys about the
economic issues surrounding the debate over a new
runway in the South East.
James Day (WS 2002-11) has teamed up with
two ex-colleagues to launch an iPhone case
business with a twist – it holds and retracts
headphones!
James launched his product on Kickstarter, the
online crowdsourcing platform, and raised over
£12,000 by selling over 800 units. The focus is
now on the streets as James is in the process
of finalizing orders with retailers – including a
huge Australian retailer who wants cases for

New Headship for Hanson
Chance meeting at Qutub Minar
James Hanson (WS 1985-95 and WS Staff 2001-03) has been appointed
Headmaster of Aldro School, Godalming, from September 2015. James is
currently Head of the Royal Boys’ Senior School in Haslemere.
Chemistry teacher Gervald Frykman was astounded to
bump into former pupil David Wolf (WS 1990-99) when
visiting Qutub Minar in Delhi with a group of Warwick School
boys over the half term holiday.

Three brothers
In the early 1900s three brothers, William, Thomas
and Richard Nichols, all attended Warwick School
before entering military service in the First World
War. All three survived.
The School is looking forward to welcoming their
nephew, Tim Nichols, who is kindly donating some
treasured memorabilia to the School archives.
They include William and Thomas’s war medals,
a collection of copy documents from the Public
Records Office regarding Tom’s military service
which make interesting reading, a football cap from
1909-10, and two silver plated trophies, one for
the 100 yards flat race in 1908 and one for the
Old Boys’ race in 1914.

Marathon Men
Good luck to all OWs running in the Virgin London Marathon on 26 April. Dave Phillips
(WS 1955-61) runs again with the Daily Telegraph’s Brain and Spine Foundation team.
Dave is hoping the London Marathon will bring his fundraising total to £86,000. It will
