Telling Champaign
County’s Story
Telling our story to potential visitors is the key to
bringing them to our community. We have to have
a hook, something that catches someone’s interest
enough for them to spend the money to travel here.
But what is our story?

It’s often asked what brings visitors to our community.
We don’t have oceanfront attractions, mountains to
climb or major theme parks. Yet where Champaign
County lacks in natural wonders, it overflows with
unique experiences.

Agriculture; art; music; technology; sports; cuisine; shopping;
outdoors; festivals—these are our experiences. These are the stories we
have to tell.
Each August, we print and distribute 70,000 Official Champaign County Visitors
Guides. The guide serves as our primary marketing piece, getting into the hands
of leisure travelers, conference attendees, sports families, group motorcoach
travelers and international professionals. Telling these stories becomes more
important when you understand the diversity of individuals we are reaching.

In previous versions of our guide, we grouped attractions and events
by broad interests—arts & culture, family-friendly, sports & outdoors,
dining and shopping. It provided excellent information, but it did not
comprehensively tell our story.
As the production of the new guide loomed ahead, the staff took time
to identify those things in our community that truly make us unique. It
became clear that there are many stories that needed to be told.
Discover local flavors at our small working farms or explore our bountiful
gardens. Learn from our impressive technology and search out plentiful
public art. Attend world-class festivals and dine in our abundant locallyowned establishments.
Agricultural Adventures
6 » AGRICULTURAL ADVENTURES
More than ever, our Visitors Guide explores these experiences that on their
own make Champaign County exciting, but combined make our community a
sensational destination.
The exercise of reinvigorating our Visitors Guide re-energized the staff and board
members on what makes Champaign County an ideal place to visit so we can
collectively tell our story.

THE MORROW PLOTS
NOTE FROM OUR CEO
We start FY15 with the work plan
theme “plant new seeds.” I’m pumped
about this theme for two reasons. One,
it playfully references our move into
marketing Agricultural Adventures.
More important, it indicates that we
never stop growing and embracing
new opportunities to showcase
Champaign County.
We’ve worked hard to create a solid foundation with many successes
and challenges along the way. As we near the end of the 2012-15
strategic plan, we will work this fiscal year to make fundamental
decisions and actions that shape and guide Visit Champaign
County over the next few years. We will talk with our partners
and stakeholders to make sure our actions indicate progress with
performance feedback along the way.
To implement this process, we’ve established a Strategic Planning
Committee, along with our other board committees: Board
Development, Finance & Operations, and Human Resources &
Bylaws. Our board members also serve as liaisons to the Sales,
Sports & Tourism Councils.
CELEBRATING
ECONOMIC IMPACT
IN CHAMPAIGN
COUNTY
Each year, the Illinois Office of
Tourism (IOT) travels the state to
unveil the latest statewide economic
impact numbers in addition to upcoming marketing initiatives. The
caravan stopped in Champaign County, July 28, at Prairie Fruits Farm
& Creamery, where it was announced that Champaign County had
exceeded $300 million in direct spending for the first time. Board
members, city council and state representatives, area attractions, IOT
and staff celebrated the significant increases with tastings of Prairie
Fruits Farm & Creamery’s goat cheese and gelato. In addition to the
2.7% increase in direct spending to $306.6 million, Champaign County
saw local tax receipts grow by 2.1% to $5.07 million, payroll increase by
2.4% with jobs growing 0.8% to 2,520. State and local tax receipts also
saw significant increases with a 4.2% increase from $18.67 million to
$19.44 million.

NEW STAFF
This summer, Visit Champaign
County participated in Unit 4’s
and the City of Champaign’s Summer
Youth Employment Program. We welcomed
Centennial junior Darien Adams for six weeks.
He helped the staff prepare for the Bloomington
Gold Corvette show, assisted with social media,
and researched potential sporting events and area
conferences. We wish Darien the best of luck
in his next few years of high school!
We also welcomed Leah Stover on the
staff as a part-time Customer Service
Assistant. Leah comes to Champaign
County after working for
Carbondale Tourism
in Southern Illinois
and is assisting
in many marketing
activities including social
media, the e-newsletter,
website updates, blogs
and much more. We’re
excited to have her in our
community!

HERE, THERE & EVERYWHERE
Historic Farm Days
Every summer, thousands of tractor enthusiasts flock to
Penfield for the annual Historic Farm Days. Held July 10–14,
Visit Champaign County welcomed visitors from around the
Midwest, directing many to the antique show at Gordyville.
The show had hundreds of antique tractors, with a special
exhibit from Ford.
Sister Singers Network
After several years of planning, the Sister Singers
Network National Women’s Choral Festival took over Krannert
Center for the Performing Arts, July 23–27. Hundreds of women
from choirs spanning the country attended workshops and
participated in numerous performances. Visit Champaign
County hosted a welcome table during registration and
welcomed these talented ladies to our community.
New Faculty & Staff Orientation
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE
The streets of Downtown Champaign came
alive May 30–August 22 as 40 North presented
their third annual Friday Night Live series. Held
every Friday from 6:00–8:00 p.m., local artists and
entertainers from hula hoopers, jazz musicians,
live Juke Boxes and caricaturists drew crowds
on three corners in the area. This year’s cycle
continued to grow, significantly bringing more
patrons to Downtown restaurants, bars and shops,
while also showcasing the incredible talent in
Champaign County.
As the University of Illinois prepares to start their new academic year,
many new faculty and staff are welcomed at the orientation fair, held August 19.
Angie and Terri set up an informational table for new faculty and staff where they
answered many questions about our community, from where to buy winter clothing
to the best places for organic foods. This is an excellent opportunity to educate
new residents on the many offerings in our community. Jayne
addressed the group as keynote speaker during the closing
session, stressing the importance of discovering your own
backyard.
CU Pride Fest
The fifth annual CU Pride Fest moved to Downtown
Champaign, September 6, bringing with it the state’s only
Pride parade outside of Chicago. Thousands of people
attended the vendor area where Visit Champaign County
welcomed residents and visitors. Kids activities, the parade and
after-hours drag shows brought an impressive range of ages and demographics to
Downtown, where all celebrated our diverse community.
RST 101
In an effort to help young students understand the exciting profession of tourism,
Jayne, Angela and Terri spoke with a Recreation, Sports and Tourism class at the
Univerisity of Illinois on September 24. We highlighted the many ways that tourism
intersects with the potential professions they are exploring. This is a great opportunity
to share our efforts locally, and meet potential interns or volunteers.
Illinois American Water Tour
The VCC staff had the opportunity to tour Illinois American Water’s state-of-the-art
water plant, September 22. This behind-the-scenes tour offered the staff an excellent
education on the many steps our water takes before it’s delivered in our pipes. Thank
you to our Tourism Industry Partner for all your work to keep our water supply safe!
Sales Council
Sales Council met at Jupiter’s at the Crossing,
September 9, to discuss the tradeshows
we attended and the leads/contacts
generated. We also discussed planning our
annual celebration event in Springfield for
planners and contacts who bring business to
Champaign County.

GETTING TO KNOW HOMER
In ongoing efforts to discover our own backyard,
Visit Champaign County staff and board members
visited the sites in Homer, September 25. The
morning was spent exploring our county’s hidden
gem, Homer Lake, learning in the Interpretive
Center and playing on the Natural Playscape. The
team then visited the Homer Historical Museum,
filled with information and artifacts on the town’s
storied past. A visit to Homer Soda Company was
in order to taste a variety of the glass-bottled
sodas followed by a shopping visit to Ms. Becky’s
Country Store. Lastly, the group enjoyed a
delicious hearty meal at the Philo Tavern, featured
on our Triple D Galore Along I-74 brochure.
Sports Council, held September 3, educated
everyone about the new sport of Foot Golf.
As it quickly spread across the country,
Lake of the Woods Golf Course has added a
course. Illinois has the second most courses
in the United States.
Tourism Council
The Tourism Council met at the Visit
Champaign County Welcome Center,
July 23 to discuss the upcoming Hidden
Treasures and Flavors of Champaign County
on October 11 as well as discussed ways to

added or updated showcasing our new maps as well as the many ways to
get around the community, whether it’s by bike, bus, Zip Car or Amtrak.
A new page featuring annual festivals and events was created, as well as
