Jurors’ Statements
It was a pleasure to serve as a juror for this year’s Kewpee Exhibition at Art Space/
Lima. Director Bill Sullivan, and the ArtSpace organization are due considerable
admiration and thanks for the monumental effort of receiving and handling many
entries, and mounting this major exhibition of art by area high school students. A
generous supply of energy surrounds this annual show, a positive venture for the
community and for young area artists
Entries in this show were numerous, and gallery space limitations required the acceptance of only 25% of the total. The submissions were strong overall, and it was
not difficult to find work worthy of inclusion in the exhibition and work that was
deserving of award recognition. I approached the jury process in an inclusive
frame of mind, as there are young artists at various levels of experience and development represented here.
Congratulations to those who are included in this show, and to all who entered, as
the work on the whole shows very positive effort and thoughtful involvement on
the part of students and teachers. Works which stood out from the rest, and those
which received awards, showed mastery of the artist’s chosen medium, along with
refreshing composition and individual style. These artists also selected subject
matter and techniques that posed personal challenges.
Thank you for this opportunity to view and enjoy the recent efforts of area art students and teachers.
Gregg Luginbuhl
Emeritus Professor of Art
Bluffton University
Judging an art exhibition is a mentally and physically grueling process, albeit a
highly rewarding one. When there is more than one juror, the process becomes an
exercise in enlightenment, debate and negotiation.
As a juror, craftsmanship and presentation is what catches my eye and draws me
in; a well-organized and provocative concept is what holds me there. This combination is what I was looking for when selecting work for the Kewpee Invitational. I
would like to thank ArtSpace for allowing me this opportunity and Gregg Luginbuhl for making the process an enjoyable one.
Melissa Eddings Mancuso
Associate Professor of Art
Ohio Northern University
A special Thank You to
Harry Shutt of The Kewpee
for his continued support
of this exhibition.
