Welcome!
Dear Friends of NWPF,
Welcome to the Third Annual Celebrate! Auction & Dinner. We’re thrilled
to share with you the wonderful spirit of the Parkinson’s community
and celebrate a few amazing individuals living life to its fullest. Gloria
Gottesman, an NWPF Board member and the chair of tonight’s event,
will share her story of living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) head-on.
Her commitment to the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation and the
PD community is boundless, her energy unmatched and her warm
personality engaging. It’s an honor to spend time with her and I know you
will appreciate her almost as much as I do.
We’re also fortunate to welcome back to Seattle a good friend of the
organization and one of our resident bloggers—Tim Hague, Sr. Tim joined
forces with us at our HOPE Conference in 2014, propelling us all to live
better with an uplifting, moving and thoughtful approach.
Enjoy tonight’s program and thank you for being an integral part of
our mission.
Sincerely,
Steve Wright
NWPF Executive Director
MIKE GASTINEAU, EVENING HOST
Tonight we welcome Mike Gastineau as our Evening Host. Mike has
been a fixture in the Seattle broadcasting community since his arrival in
June of 1991. In a business where loyalty and longevity are rarely used
in the same sentence, his 21-year career at KJR Radio screams of both.
For 19 of those years (1993 to 2012) he anchored KJR’s afternoon drive
time slot working both solo and with partners. That stint included a
memorable 14-year run as half of the wildly popular Groz with Gas show.
In December of 2012 Gas resigned from KJR to pursue other interests.
To date those interests include a book on the launch of the Seattle
Sounders FC in MLS. The book is titled Sounders FC: Authentic
Masterpiece and has received rave reviews, selling thousands of copies.
Since April 2013, Gas has been a regular contributor to Pearl Jam Radio
on Sirius XM Channel 22. He does long form interviews with athletes,
musicians, and other special guests.
TIM HAGUE, SR., SPEAKER
Tim was formally diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease
in February of 2011 after first noticing a tremor in his left foot during the
fall of 2010. The diagnosis came as a shock to an otherwise healthy
individual. After a period of initial struggle, Tim got back on his feet,
continuing to work out and lead a healthy lifestyle. He successfully
trained for and ran his first triathlon in the summer of 2011. Since
that time, Tim has continued to partner with various organizations to
encourage physical activity among people with Parkinson’s.
In 2013 Tim and his son Tim Jr. won the first season of The Amazing
Race Canada. This incredible journey has had an indelible impact on
Tim’s life. Having been the first person with Parkinson’s to ever run and
win The Amazing Race Canada, Tim has been thrust into the spotlight
as an advocate for Parkinson’s. This is a role that he has embraced and
continues to use to educate and raise resources toward the work of
finding a cure and helping individuals live their best with Parkinson’s.
Winning The Amazing Race has also created the opportunity for Tim to
speak to thousands across Canada and the U.S. and encourage them
to ‘Live Your Best’. This message is wrapped in the idea of having the
Strength to do your best, the Courage to be content with what your best
produces, and the will to Persevere.
Tim brings a rich mix of attributes and history to his storytelling.
Born in Texas, Tim was adopted and grew up in Kansas. At the age
of 25, Tim and his young wife Sheryl moved to Winnipeg, Canada,
setting out on what has proven to be a truly amazing journey. Tim
earned his Registered Nurse designation in 1995 and has cared for
many Parkinson’s patients throughout his career. In addition, Tim’s
adopted father also had Parkinson’s disease, which added to the deep
understanding and compassion that Tim holds for people living with
Parkinson’s. Tim is far too well acquainted with this disease; however,
it is this close professional and personal association that brings power
and poignancy to his advocacy.

RIGHT NOW IN THE NORTHWEST
Our mission is simple: improve the quality of life of people in the
Parkinson’s community right now. While we wait for a cure, we know
that everyday in the Northwest someone is diagnosed with PD. Our
goal is to bridge the gap between diagnosis and cure, with the best
evidence-based programming available at no or low cost. We help
people Move, Connect and Engage.
Parkinson’s affects 100,000 people throughout the Northwest. By
moving, connecting and engaging, people with Parkinson’s and their
loved ones experience improvement in physical symptoms, reduction in
anxiety and a clear path forward. Our flagship programs include Dance
for PD, Music Therapy, the PD Link peer support network, our licensed
social worker program, Team Parkinson’s and the HOPE Conference®.
In the vast areas of Montana, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington,
NWPF is leading the country in innovative uses of technology to reach
people in rural and urban areas alike. We provide our very own speech
therapy app on the iPad, weekly expert news and blog postings
and monthly webinars. In September we began live streaming our
educational programs online so people anywhere can learn from our
internationally recognized speakers.
NWPF reaches folks in need through valuable partnerships. Our partners
include the World Parkinson Congress, Parkinson’s Resources of
Oregon, Parkinson’s Action Network, Parkinson Disease Foundation,
Seattle Theatre Group, Mark Morris Dance, Ballet Idaho, Senior
Services, the Washington State Area Agency on Aging, Washington
State Mentors, the Alliance of Independent Regional Parkinson’s
Organizations and many health clinics, hospitals and providers.
Tonight, let’s Celebrate the nation’s best regional Parkinson’s
organization in an effort to keep people moving, connecting and
engaging until the cure is found.

GLORIA GOTTESMAN, SPEAKER
ELLIE GOTTESMAN, VIDEOGRAPHER
Gloria Gottesman, a 4th generation Seattleite, grew up in Magnolia
and then graduated from Sammamish High in Bellevue. After a BA from
UC Berkeley and a MA in Education from San Francisco State, she
followed her husband’s medical training to Los Angeles and Chicago.
The family returned to Seattle permanently in 1978.
Over the next 35 years, she worked as an interior designer, sold real
estate and ran college selection seminars while playing tennis, golf, and
bridge, raising three boys and then seven grandchildren.
Gloria was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease just over two years
ago. She soon told family and friends that she had PD and decided that
she would embrace her disease without letting PD define her. Gloria
joined the NWPF Board and was asked to chair this year’s event.
Ellie Gottesman is a 13 year-old at Mercer Island Middle School.
When her grandmother, Gloria, hoped to create a short video showing
some of the many ways NWPF reaches out to the community, Ellie
quickly volunteered. The video you will see tonight became her summer
project as she accompanied Gloria to many NWPF programs.
