Luxury is a useful word – but often ill applied. Yet, I have no hesitation
in describing the Aloha Hill Club as “the only affordable luxury serviced
residential apartment development in Marbella”. It is also distinguished
by an interesting history; undergoing a complete transformation from
a basic structure to 5-star opulence, all within the space of two years.
The idea for the magazine is two-fold; we are excited to announce the
completion of the Aloha Hill Club development and to report that the
finished result has exceeded all expectations. Secondly, we would like
to introduce the team of collaborators who worked tirelessly to make
the Aloha Hill Club the success it is today.
Also, it is fair to say that, Marbella itself has played an important role
in the success of the project. Largely unaffected by local economic
conditions, the town has undergone a recent sea change, moving away
from conspicuous consumption towards a greater appreciation for
world-class quality and luxury. With the Aloha Hill Club’s great location,
design and build quality already in place, all it took was a clear vision
and a small leap of faith, for the Aloha Hill Club Resort SL to recognise
the project as the perfect antidote to the lack of affordable, quality
serviced residences on the Costa del Sol.
The Aloha Hill Club Resort SL is extremely proud to be involved with
such a unique enterprise. Furthermore, we are confident that the Aloha
Hill Club will continue to hold the benchmark for luxury residential
property in Marbella, and indeed the Costa del Sol.

A Brief History
of the Aloha Hill Club

The Aloha Hill Club offers everything that you
would expect from a world class luxury serviced development... but the story could have
had a very different ending. The project was
conceived at a time of great optimism and
then lay unoccupied for a number of years,
before it was taken on by Morten Remo and
his partners. Sensing the project’s potential,
he negotiated with the owners, Cajamar, and
reached an agreement to acquire the whole
development in the Spring of 2011.

Hill Club, it only took an instant to recognise
that it could be transformed into a five-star

”At that time the property market was
starting to stabilise although I remember the
majority of ‘experts’ were still very negative
about the prospect of people wanting to
move to the Costa del Sol again. After taking
a look myself and speaking to some key people I decided that the time and conditions
were right and the opportunities were there.”
“For a start, the location was perfect, both
from a visual and a practical point of view,”
he says. “The architecture was imaginative
and the construction high quality, which
made it the ideal project for a five-star
serviced development, which is what we
had decided Marbella needed. In such a
well-established area it is important to offer
something special, preferably something that
is not replicated anywhere else in the area.”
Morten reveals that it has taken just over 24
months to convert the basic structure that
greeted him on acquisition into the luxury
private residential development that it is
today ... and he couldn’t be more delighted
with the result.

The Aloha Hill Club was not a project that
was taken on lightly; Morten had spent a
considerable amount of time looking at
similar projects. What set this complex apart
from the others was its position, nestled in
the heart of Nueva Andalucía’s ’Golf Valley’
and the scope for transformation.
“Having been actively involved in real estate
for almost 25 years and in Marbella for more
than 15 years, we made a thorough study
of the Marbella/Puerto Banús area. Marbella has almost everything except a luxury
private residential development with its
own concierge services desk; facilities like
our shuttle service and owners’ wine cellar,
to name but a few, did not exist. Looking
around and discussing our ideas with friends
and family we knew that a fully serviced
development would be ideal for many people looking to buy in Marbella. One of our
key words is ‘convenience’ and that is what
the AHC is all about.”
It is anticipated that – given its prime location - many residents will be keen golfers,
so AHC will encompass several features
guaranteed to make life easier: “We have

as well as a putting green and the Aloha
Hill Club is only a few minutes’ drive from
the Aloha Golf, Las Brisas and Los Naranjos
courses.”
Throughout the entire process Morten has
been hard at work, overseeing the finishing
touches (“Attention to detail is the key. Maria
Rosa and the team will be on hand to fine
tune the living experience for residents”) and
he is optimistic about the future.
“Others may be put off by the doom and
gloom in the newspapers, but it is actually
good for us. It allows my partners and me
the necessary time to study and identify
other potential real estate opportunities.
“What most people seem to overlook is the
fact that the Costa del Sol, and the Marbella
area in particular, is more affected by what
goes on in the global economy than in the
Spanish economy. I feel it is the same situation as when I first arrived back in 1995. Most
people are negative but under the surface
there is a lot going on. I feel very comfortable about the future prospects of Marbella.”
Morten Remo
was born in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.
He bought and renovated his first property in Denmark
when he was 19.
Since this first project he has transformed many houses,
and been involved in property construction both in Denmark and in Spain.
Morten has a banking background and worked in the
private wealth management business for more than 20
years alongside his real estate ventures.
In his spare time he enjoys playing golf and has been skiing since he could walk both cross country (he completed
the demanding Vasaloppet in 2010) and alpine. He also
plays lawn and padel tennis and loves cycling, both road
racing and mountain biking.

The popularity of the magnificent show flat proves

AHC: How did you get involved in the Aloha
Hill Club project? Have you ever been to the
Costa del Sol before, or know some of the
many Danes living here?
GJ: Of course both Morten and I are Danish,
but I know the reason he has chosen us
was because he knew we have the perfect
background and experience for this project.
My company has been here before, looking
at some projects, but the Aloha Hill Club is
the first project that we have undertaken
on the Costa del Sol. We´ve been involved
in projects elsewhere in Spain though, last
year we designed 95 apartments in Alcudia,
Mallorca, and we’ve also been busy in Gran
Canaria and Tenerife – all furnished apartments.
AHC: Do you normally visit all the construction sites yourself?
GJ: Yes, I close all the deals, but I have
some great on-site project managers. After
finishing a project, we check the state of the
apartment and hand it over to the owners.
Then we come back and carry out the
installation before the final handover. This
can be repeated if there is still anything that
needs to be taken care of.
AHC: So there is strict quality control in all
your projects?
GJ: Yes, this is our business. We do the design, we do the purchasing – that is
something we are particularly strong in
– and then our excellent project managers
make sure that all the installation is taken
care of.
AHC: Interior Direct collaborates with a
strong network of international business
partners and manufacturers. How does that
help you with the realization of the Aloha
Hill Club project?
GJ: It is true that we have an extremely
strong supply chain. One of our owners,
Lars Larsen, is a famous figure in Denmark. The other owner has been one of his
trusted suppliers for 25 years, and provides
us with furniture that we sell with a five
year guarantee. Our second big advantage
is our experience. We deal mostly with
the hospitality market, which consists of

furnished apartments and hotels. We can
outfit entire hotels and resorts; we can do
apartments, rooms and common areas,
restaurants, lobbies, receptions, bars,
etc. Our designers know exactly how to
maximise the functionality of this type of
apartment, whether it is meant for rental or
private use.
AHC: Did you do anything to adapt the
Aloha Hill Club apartments for the Costa
del Sol climate and lifestyle?
GJ: Every project has its own soul. We did
the design in close cooperation with the
on-site interior design department at AHC.
The design of the Aloha Hill Club is unique
and many of the pieces of furniture are
made exclusively for this project. But of
course we build on our experience of having completed many projects in Southern
Europe: in Bulgaria, Montenegro, Malta. We
know that the products we use are perfect
for a summer lifestyle because they are easy
to maintain and very durable.
AHC: Scandinavian design is famous around
the world. With so many Scandinavians involved in the development of the AHC and the
amount of interest from potential Northern
European investors, will the AHC interiors be
visibly Scandinavian in style?
GJ: I think the clients will appreciate that it
is a Northern European design, but with a
Mediterranean touch. For example, I don´t
think we would be using this colour scheme
in a Nordic country. I think the show flat can
really appeal to anyone who appreciates
modern style and quality.
AHC: Would you like to live here yourself?
GJ: Yes, absolutely! It´s a fantastic project,
built and decorated to the highest standards.
The Aloha Hill Club Design concept
The design of the Aloha Hill Club originated from a desire to
create luxurious, modern and yet homely interiors, a place fit
for a relaxing holiday in the peaceful surroundings of Nueva
Andalucía’s Golf Valley.
The emphasis is on creating bright, warm, high spec interiors
combining minimalism and contemporary design, with some
striking details such as graphic wall décor, accent colours, bed
canopies and outdoor furniture with integrated light.
The main colour scheme is based on warm shades of beige and
off-white, combined with darker browns in the wooden surfaces
and upholsteries. Stronger colours are added in pictures and
cushions as a contrast to the basic shades.
Various furniture packs have been created - along with the
optional add-ons - which enable the customer to make individual choices while purchasing a complete holiday home interior.
Every package is designed to cover all the essential needs of a
holiday home – such as lamps, curtains, carpets, towels, bedspreads, duvets, pillows and bathroom equipment - as well as a
complete kitchen hardware set for six people.

The Aloha Hill Club is situated in Nueva Andalucía’s
Golf Valley, within walking distance of three worldrenowned golf courses.
Aloha Golf Club
Aloha Golf Club was designed by Spain´s most acclaimed golf
architect, Javier Araña, and is considered one of the best in
the country. Both the Andalucían Open Tournament and PGA
European Tour competitions were held here. Since its opening
in 1975, its sweeping fairways and testing greens have been
enjoyed by professionals and amateurs alike, including several
international royals and actor Sean Connery. The club´s facilities
include a driving range, a swimming pool, a restaurant and a
well-equipped golf shop.

Los Naranjos
Designed by golf course guru Sir Robert Trent Jones, Los
Naranjos has hosted various important golfing competitions,
including the Spanish Open and has twice been voted the
Costa del Sol´s Course of the Year. The club´s history reaches
back to 1977, but the course and clubhouse were extensively
revamped in 2009 to offer members new playing opportunities and an exclusive leisure experience. The club hosts its
own restaurant, wellness studio, beauty salon and conference
facilities.

Las Brisas
Considered one of Robert Trent Jones´s finest creations, Real
Club de Golf Las Brisas has been enjoyed by golfers from
around the world since its opening in 1968. Its beautiful course
with challenging water hazards, bunkers and dog-legs was
host to the World Cup, Spanish Open and Mediterranean Open
competitions. Las Brisas is known to be one of the Spanish
royal family’s favourite courses.

In 2000, the Aloha Hill Club won an architectural prize for the “best
development design in Marbella”; the imagination behind it is
leading architect Ismael Mérida, of Mérida y Asociados. Founded
in 1996, this Costa del Sol based practice has been responsible for
projects in locations such as Lisbon, Casablanca, Tangier and the Dominican Republic. His portfolio includes private villas and housing
complexes, hotels, commercial centres and sports, leisure and golf
resorts.

If Mérida y Asociados can be said to be
guided by a central philosophy, then it is the
primacy of the individual requirements of
each project. “We do not have a pre-set style,”
reveals Ismael Mérida. “For Mérida y Asociados, the project is not an excuse to unleash
our egos. Our task is to create buildings that

are totally integrated with the surrounding
environment, which we were able to do with
the Aloha Hill Club.”
Ismael is influenced by the ancient Chinese
tradition of Feng Shui, which he employs in
order to ensure that all aspects of the design
and construction process, such as orientation,
materials and organisation of available space,
combine to function well within the surrounding environment.
In the Aloha Hill Club one of the most
important factors is water, which acts as an
axis, creating a north to south perspective.
The complex is laid out on a diagonal, which
was dictated by the superb southerly views,
as it was important that as many apartments
as possible could benefit from them. “We
worked hard on the design,” says Ismael. “In
the end we decided that it was best to use a
diagonal lay-out, which took some time to
perfect, but in the end we managed to find a
solution that suits everyone.”
Ismael explains that the tenets of Feng Shui
allow for the apparent disorder in nature and
organic forms: “Wherever we stand, we see
only one aspect of the overall plan. Perhaps it
is not immediately clear to us. However, if we
were to take to the skies, we would be able to
deduce the order behind the plan.”
The aspect of the Aloha Hill Club’s design of
which Ismael and the Mérida y Asociados
team are most proud, is the extent to which
the surrounding environment has been incorporated into the final design,“The landscape
is essentially one of its pillars.”

Since being sworn in as Mayor of Marbella
on June the 16th 2007, Angeles Muñoz has
shown a steely determination to improve the
city’s image, both within Spain and overseas.
This mayoral mission has resulted in a new
urban plan or PGOU (Plan General de Ordenación Urbana) being drawn up to secure
Marbella’s reputation as one of Europe’s foremost destinations, as well as being a thriving
modern city in which to conduct business.

The main problem that has faced Mayor
Muñoz has been the city’s outdated and
largely discredited PGOU, drawn up in
1986. Not only has the population increased significantly during the past 26
years, the expectations of these residents
has meant that Marbella must institute the
changes necessary to meet their elevated
requirements.
Patricia Gomez Toledo of Qualiberica
explains the significance of the new PGOU,
“Marbella has a unique charm which,
despite the mismanagement conducted by
previous administrations, endures today.”
Apart from these very obvious measures,
the PGOU includes the completion of
the long-awaited San Pedro de Alcántara
bypass, a new technology park and the
opening of Marbella University. Marbella
is now the first city in Andalucía with a
population of over 100,000 to approve a
new urban plan.
“The Aloha Hill Club enjoys one of the best
locations in Marbella,” explains Patricia.
“Apart from the obvious attractions, the
apartments are close to a sophisticated
network of roads that will allow access to
Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport within 45
minutes.
With visitors arriving from all over the
world to visit this revitalised Marbella, the
Aloha Hill Club offers a peaceful country
club lifestyle in a green area that is only a
few minutes away from the centre of the
city.”
The new PGOU is truly a plan for the future
and has been drawn up with a population
increase of just over 40,000 in mind. Yet
the city will not only increase in size, it will
massively improve, particularly with the
amounts of overseas investment already
secured by Mayor Muñoz during her visits
to the Middle East.
Of course, one of the most exciting new
projects will be the development of
Marbella’s La Bajadilla area, which will
necessitate the moving of the city’s old
La Ermita polígono, or industrial park – in
order to attract a new generation of holidaymakers.
With a specific and achievable plan for
the future in place, Marbella’s status as

Marbella
the universal city
< the history and more... >
There is more to Marbella than palatial
villas, expensive cars and tourists; the city
has a rich history, the remnants of which
are scattered all around the area.
Marbella dates back to the 7th century B.C,
when it was inhabited by the Phoenicians.
Ancient ruins found in the area suggest
that these early settlers were succeeded
by the Romans, who called the city Salduba - “salt city”.
In the Middle Ages Marbella was inhabited
by the Moors, who immediately set about
building massive walls to repel the Christians, who were intent on conquering this
strategically located city. Today, the walls
have gone but the citadel - or Alcazaba remains. It was also during this Moorish
period that Marbella became renowned
for its excellent wines.
In the 15th century, after nearly 900 years
of Islamic rule, Marbella was conquered by
the King of Castile, Fernando the Catholic,
who appointed it the capital of the region
and began developing its infrastructure.
He replaced the Muslim Medina with the
Plaza de Naranjos, which was followed
by the creation of other landmarks such
as the Fort of San Luis, the Church of the
Holy Christ of the True Cross, and the

Calvary Chapel, all built under the rule of
subsequent Catholic kings in the 16th and
17th centuries.
The city continued to develop slowly as a
primarily farming and agricultural site. In
the 19th century, industrialization reached
Marbella and it became a leading supplier
of iron in Spain.
It was not until the 1950s that Marbella
experienced a rapid growth in popularity,
following the arrival of Prince Alfonso
de Hohenlohe, who opened the famous
Marbella Club Hotel, which became the
holiday destination of choice for many of
his celebrity friends. The hotel´s neighbourhood became known as the Golden
Mile and Marbella started attracting elite
tourism and worldwide media attention.
In the 1970s, Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia
arrived in Marbella after breaking the
bank at the Monte Carlo Casino. Enchanted by the city, he returned time and again
with his entourage of over 3000 people,
whose extravagant spending provided a
welcome boost to the local economy.
The 90s were marked by Mayor Jesus Gil´s
dedicated work towards infrastructural
development on the one hand and a
number of crime and corruption scandals
on the other, which caused a furore in the
local, national and international press.
Despite that, celebrities continued to buy
properties in Marbella and the city has
never failed to attract large numbers of
international visitors during the summer.
Presently, Marbella continues to evade
the worst ravages of the recent economic
crisis and new foreign investment secured
by the current Mayor Angeles Muñoz has
given Marbella high hopes for the future.
