Eric White peut être considéré comme l’un des pionniers du Réalisme Onirique. Puisant son inspiration dans la culture du cinéma et dans l’imaginaire du rêve américain, White crée des visions picturales psychédéliques originales et détaillées générant
un univers psychologique haletant avec une parfaite maîtrise d’exécution de peintures figuratives surréalistes. Son travail est
inspiré par le cinéma datant de l’âge d’or hollywoodien et par le coté obscur de la Pop Culture; dépeinte dans un onirisme
schizophrénique à la fois fantastique et satirique.
L’exposition présente des dessins originaux, des peintures ainsi que la série 1/3 Scale retrospectives faite d’après d’anciennes
oeuvres de l’artiste, reproduites à exactement 1/3 de leur taille originale. Sous contrôle de l’artiste, ces magnifiques reproductions sont volontairement contrefaites en Chine par Xiamen Unique Oil Painting Co., Ltd. En sous traitant la reproduction
d’une sélection de son oeuvre, White joue avec les notions d’appropriation, de démarche artistique et de «faux» spécifiques
aux marques du luxe. White lance une pique enjouée aux rétrospectives d’artistes illustres souvent morts mettant en scène
l’une de leur oeuvre en miniature.
Le livre Eric White (Rizzoli) est également disponible chez colette. Il s’agit de la première monographie complète de l’artiste
contenant principalement des oeuvres non-publiées. Son livre couvre l’intégralité de son travail allant jusqu’à ses toutes premières acryliques, huiles et travaux sur papier. Ses pochettes d’album subversives et ses installations 1/3 Scale Retrospective
illustrent une description paranoïaque de notre réalité sociale. Le travail de White ouvre une fenêtre sur un univers alternatif à
la fois déformé, sombre et amusant.
Eric White est né en 1968 à Ann Arbor dans le Michigan. Après un BFA au Rhode Island School of Design en 1990, White travaille et vit depuis à Los Angeles et New York City où il reçoit en 2010 une bourse Painting Fellowship de la New York Foundation for the Arts. Son travail a été présenté dans différents musées comprenant le Long Beach Museum of Art, le Museo
de la Ciudad de México, le De Bond Museum in Belgium, le MACRO Museum in Italy, et l’ American Visionary Art Museum
in Baltimore. Son travail a été largement exposé dans différentes villes du monde comme Copenhagen, Brussels, New York,
Miami, Hambourg, Los Angeles.
Eric White can be considered one of the great pioneers of the oneiric realism that draws on American film culture to create
original psychedelic visions in the most refined painterly manner, deceptively referencing the customary vision of the imagery of the American Dream. White generates a world of psychologically charged narratives in his masterfully executed and
surreal figurative paintings. His work is inspired by cinema - especially the golden age of Hollywood - and by an obscure pop
culture seen through the lens of a satirical and fantastical schizophrenic dream logic. The show presents original drawings,
paintings and his 1/3 Scale retrospectives series made with older works from White reproduced at exactly one-third of
their original size. These seemingly exquisite reproductions, upon closer inspection, are unfaithful knock-offs produced at
Xiamen Unique Oil Painting Co., Ltd. in China. By subcontracting out the replication of selections from his oeuvre, White
plays with notions of appropriation, authorship, and the ‘fake’ phenomenon specific to luxury brands, and takes a playful jab
at the hallowed ‘retrospective’ of the established - and often dead-artist by staging a false one of his own work in miniature.
The Book Eric White (Rizzoli) is also available at colette. This is the first comprehensive and long-overdue monograph of
visual artist Eric White, containing mostly previously unpublished work. This book covers the breadth of his career so far,
from his earliest acrylics, oils, and works on paper, to his subverted album cover paintings, to work he describes as paranoid
social realism, to his 1/3 Scale retrospectives installations. White’s work opens a window into an alternate universe, one that
is distorted, dark, and extremely witty.
