Summer is the season to step outside, and we’re
delighted to do so once again with our friends from
the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This month, 99.5 WCRB is heading west to
bring you more of the world-class music-making that happens every summer
in the Berkshires.
“Tanglewood is such a special place,” says WCRB Station Manager
Anthony Rudel. “The environment opens up the music—the Koussevitzky
Music Shed has no walls—and invites you in.”
Broadcasts begin
Friday, July 8, with an
opening night concert
featuring violinist
Joshua Bell, and continue every weekend
throughout the
summer (page 27).
WCRB closes the
month presenting a
trio of concerts conducted by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. “He’s become
a major conductor on the world stage,” Rudel says. “He’s a natural musician
who loves what he does, and that comes across in his performances.”
You’ll be able to savor every stirring note thanks to our outstanding
production team: longtime host Ron Della Chiesa, the voice of the BSO;
producer/host Brian McCreath; and sound engineer Antonio Oliart. “We try to
infuse the broadcasts with a sense of place,” Rudel says. “You hear the audience
more than you do in the formal setting of Symphony Hall. You hear the rain
hitting the roof during a storm. Last year, somebody nearby was shooting off
fireworks and they became part of the performance.”
Our intimate connection to Tanglewood also continues on TV this month
with the premiere of New Tanglewood Tales/Life On Stage and Off (page 18).
The series goes behind the scenes to chronicle the experiences of five BSO
musicians and an assistant conductor during their 2015 summer.
Meanwhile, the stage is set for the Republican and Democratic
Conventions. WGBH News will be on the ground in Cleveland and Philadelphia
(page 26), with reporter Adam Reilly providing updates and analysis for 89.7
WGBH, Greater Boston and WGBHNews.org. PBS NewsHour also will bring
you full coverage of both conventions over two weeks.
Great music plus in-depth reporting on the stories that matter to you…
accessible to all…all summer long, thanks to your generous annual support.

Going, Going, Gone
Animals go extinct
for a number of
reasons, such as
habitat loss or overhunting. Once that
happens, they’re
gone forever. But
what if there was a
way to see them
again? Seeing the
Wild Kratts crew
sad about the extinction of different animals in recent history, Aviva
decides that it’s finally time to unveil her most secret invention yet—
the Time Trampoline! Using the trampoline, the Wild Kratts jump Back
in Creature Time to meet dodo birds and Tasmanian tigers. But will the
brothers become trapped in the past?

Twelve new bakers are donning their aprons and heading for the iconic
tent in the heart of the British countryside. Judges Mary Berry and
Paul Hollywood have created 30 new challenges that will test their
baking prowess, creativity and skill in a bid to find Britain’s best amateur baker. From Victorian classics to high-end patisserie, from chocolate sculptures to everyday staples, the bakers will need cool heads
and even colder hands to make it to the
final. With them every step of the way
are Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, ready
to lend a hand or a shoulder to cry on.

From acclaimed writer and director Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince),
the ensemble mystery Dancing on the Edge features an all-star cast led
by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthew Goode, John Goodman, Angel Coulby
and Jacqueline Bisset. Building on last month’s premiere, the eight-part
series follows the Louis Lester Band—a jazz group on the rise in 1930s
London. As the band continues to succeed,
despite the racism and classism they
encounter, Louis (Ejiofor) finds himself
entangled in a series of unfortunate
circumstances. He becomes a suspect in a
murder case, putting him on the run and
possibly leading to the band’s demise.

Enter Endeavour’s World
The third season of the popular Inspector
Morse prequel series Endeavour comes
to an end with two gripping episodes.
In Prey, the case of a missing Dutch au
pair proves far from routine. Endeavour
must navigate the disparate worlds of
Oxford scientific academia and the
untamed wilderness of the Oxfordshire
countryside to unearth a possible link
between the au pair’s disappearance and a cold case. Then in Coda,
when he is recruited by a college mentor to monitor the movements of
his estranged young wife, Endeavour is drawn to the woman he is
investigating. He also begins to consider his future on the force, leading to an agonizing conclusion to the season.

Tunnel Trip Continues
Go further into The Tunnel, the 10-part British crime drama set against
the backdrop of Europe in crisis. When a prominent French politician is
found dead in the middle of the Channel Tunnel, straddling the border
between the UK and France, detectives Karl Roebuck, played by
Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones), and Elise Wassermann, played
by Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), are sent
to investigate on behalf of their respective countries. The case takes a
surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene,
forcing the French and British police into
an uneasy partnership. Their investigation
continues in episode 3 (Sun, 7/3), when a
serial killer steps up his cross-Channel
campaign, targeting an elderly victim in
his “moral” crusade.

Come Fly with Us
Explore the wonder and science behind flight in the final two episodes
of the groundbreaking SuperNature—Wild Flyers series, co-produced
by PBS and the BBC. Many animals take to the skies for a split second,
but to stay there, the planet’s strongest flyers push the laws of physics
to the limit. Masters of the Sky examines the extremes of true flight:
power, acceleration, top speed, maneuverability and endurance. Then
the series finale navigates our crowded skies, where mammals, birds
and insects hunt, escape, mate, defend territory, and sleep. Survival up
there depends not just on beating gravity or mastering flight, but also
out-flying the competition.

Going Back to Indy
In 2016, the longest-running appraisal show on American television is
celebrating 20 years on the air! During its distinguished tenure,
WGBH’s Antiques Roadshow’s traveling treasure hunt has crisscrossed
the country, opening the doors of the rarified world of antiques and
collectibles to millions of viewers. This month, the show heads back to
Indianapolis, 15 years after its initial visit, to learn the current values
for previously appraised finds. Highlights
include an autographed electric guitar,
a Little Orphan Annie dress, ca. 1930, and
a 1913 N.C. Wyeth painting. Which item
values fell and which ones soared?

Inside the White House
Celebrate the 200-year history of the White House through the stories
of the First Families who have called it home, and through the recollections of workers, historians and members of the press who have
spent time within the illustrious building. Weaving together video
footage, still photos and interviews,
The White House: Inside Story brings the
history of the iconic mansion to life.
Standing at the epicenter of global politics, in the heart of the nation’s capital,
the story of the White House is the story
of America itself.

Dream World
This evocative Dantesque
essay of a film reimagines
the US/Mexico border as
a mythical place, exploring the vulnerability of
the human soul, the violence man creates and
the destruction left in its
wake. The film opens
with director Rodrigo Reyes’ own words: “Close your eyes. Try to imagine
what the world was like, many, many years ago. Try to imagine when borders
did not exist.” His invitation is for us to think about a world where time,
wonder and mystery converge seamlessly. America ReFramed: Purgatorio

Homegrown Terror
American-born terrorist David Coleman Headley helped plan the deadly
2008 siege on Mumbai. In this chilling, comprehensive portrait, WGBH’s
Frontline and ProPublica reveal how secret electronic surveillance missed
catching the Mumbai plotters
and how Headley planned a
Charlie Hebdo-like assault
against a Danish newspaper.
Exclusive accounts from investigators demonstrate how the
FBI finally identified, tracked
and captured Headley, who
became an important witness
for the agency. The film presents a troubling case study of the limitations of even the most sophisticated
electronic surveillance capabilities. Frontline/American Terrorist

conditions. In Rx: The Quiet
Revolution, you’ll travel across
America to discover a quiet revolution happening in medicine. From Maine
to Mississippi, Alaska to California, see physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals placing the patient at the center of their practice—

Managing Mortality
WGBH’s Frontline follows
renowned New Yorker
writer and Boston surgeon
Atul Gawande as he
explores the relationships
doctors have with patients
who are nearing the end
of life. In conjunction
with Gawande’s bestseller
Being Mortal, this film
investigates the practice of caring for the dying and reveals how doctors are
not only often uncomfortable talking with their patients about chronic illness
and death, but may be remarkably untrained for the task.

Deep Dive
New Orleans, LA, is one of the
“murder capitals” of the United
States. For the last decade,
statistics have shown murder
rates four to six times higher
than the national average.
Eighty percent of the victims
are black males, mostly in their
teenage years. Shell Shocked starts at the surface of New Orleans’ teen
murder epidemic and delves into the hearts and minds of those whose lives
are most deeply impacted—the youths who live in fear of violence, the
parents who grieve a loss they will never fully transcend, and the mentors
and officials who are dedicated to touching, and perhaps saving, one life at
a time. America ReFramed: Shell Shocked

Convention Coverage
This month, WGBH News sends a team of reporters and producers to the
Republican and Democratic National Conventions in Cleveland and
Philadelphia respectively. Led by veteran political reporter Adam Reilly, the
group’s coverage will be heard on 89.7 WGBH’s Morning
Edition and All Things Considered. They also will contribute to TV’s Greater Boston and produce digital reports
for WGBHNews.org.
“Our WGBH News team will be in both convention
cities, bringing you the latest developments and adding local context to the issues raised as we move closer
to the general election,” says Executive Managing
Editor Linda Polach. The team begins live coverage from the conventions on
July 18.
For more political commentary from WGBH News, follow The Scrum podcast, featuring Reilly, WGBHNews.org Senior Editor Peter Kadzis, and David
S. Bernstein, who covers politics and media in Boston and Washington, DC.

“Classical” Pianist
Pianist Ahmad Jamal considers jazz to be
American classical music. Whatever you call
the art form, Jamal is a master of it, putting
together a more than 60-year career that
spans the eras of big band, Parker/Gillespie,
the electronic age, etc. He is one of the most
sampled composers and recording artists in the
world. Selections from The Ahmad Jamal Trio, at The Pershing were
featured in The Bridges of Madison County and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Days after Jamal’s 86th birthday, host Eric Jackson presents a panoramic view of his storied career.

Rath’s fifth trip to the military base (known as Camp Justice) to cover the
deliberations.
“Arun’s reporting demonstrates our continued commitment to on-theground coverage of important national stories—told through a local Boston
lens,” says Phil Redo, general manager for radio. “We’re proud to have Arun
represent our newsroom and public media at large.”
Rath was the only public media journalist covering the trial in Guantanamo. He reported live from the base for eight days, with stories featured
on 89.7’s news programs, NPR, PRI’s The World, and wgbhnews.org. For

99.5 WCRB
Festive and Fun
By Anthony Rudel
99.5 WCRB Station Manager
There’s an old baseball expression about needing a
scorecard to know the players. This month, at the
height of baseball season, WCRB has so much going
on you might need a scorecard to keep it all straight.
In case you don’t have one, we’re hoping this overview will do the job.
July wouldn’t be July without the annual celebration of our nation’s birth, and WCRB is marking
the holiday weekend with a Festival of American
Artists. Throughout the weekend, every performance will include at least one American performer,
and since we are in Boston, we’ll try to include an
extra batch of Boston-based musicians. Of course,
we do have a leg-up because WCRB is the broadcast
home of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops,
and to give the weekend the right feel, on Sunday
July 3, WCRB’s Sunday Night Special will present two
Boston Pops concerts from this spring season, back-to-back, beginning at
7pm. We’ll start with an all-Gershwin show, followed by a wonderful trip
down Broadway with Sutton Foster. Then on July 4, we’re going to party like
it’s 1976 by recreating a concert featuring Arthur Fielder and the Pops.
The following weekend, WCRB begins its Tanglewood broadcasts with
concerts live from the Koussevitsky Music Shed on Friday and Saturday at
8pm. On Sunday July 10, at 7pm, we’ll air a special rebroadcast of this
spring’s Film Night with John Williams (above) and the Boston Pops. Every
weekend after that, for the balance of July and throughout August, our
microphones will bring you the BSO from Tanglewood, but there’s one important schedule change to note: the Sunday broadcasts will be heard at 7pm so
that more people can enjoy the music. And if you are lucky enough to have
been at Tanglewood for the afternoon performance, you can hear it again on
your way back home! Check out our detailed schedule to know what’s playing when on our website: ClassicalWCRB.org.

Summertime is perfect for outdoor listening, and WCRB is proud to
partner once again with the wonderful Landmarks Orchestra. Every
Wednesday evening, beginning July 13, and continuing until August 31, the
Landmarks Orchestra takes to the Esplanade for concerts that are fun and
oh so enjoyable. And, to make it even better, each concert will be introduced
by your favorite WCRB on-air personalities. For a complete schedule of the
Landmarks’ concerts and who will be hosting each performance, please visit
ClassicalWCRB.org.
Finally, we are absolutely delighted to be able to make WCRB accessible
to you wherever you might be! That’s right, our new app is now available in
the iTunes and Google Play stores. Just search “Classical Radio Boston” and
download the app for free; then, no matter where you may wander this
summer, you can be connected to the Boston radio station that plays more
music than any other.
Happy 4th—and every other day—in July!

A Cape Cod Notebook
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Nature writer Robert Finch explores what, to him, is the ultimate mystery:
the experience of being consciously alive in a physical universe. His explorations can be heard in his weekly essay series A Cape Cod Notebook, which
began airing on WCAI in 2005.
“I suppose I’ve always been interested in human stories as much as
‘nature essays,’” Finch says. “Or rather, what interests me as a writer is the
intersection of human nature and natural history, to ask of any natural experience, ‘What is the human meaning of
that?’”
He compiled his essays into the
recently published book A Cape Cod
Notebook 2, the second in a series.
Finch says it was listeners who originally encouraged him to preserve and
share his writings in book form.
“Adam Gamble, who published
the first collection, came up with the
idea of a compact (4" x 6") format,
something people could slip into their

pocket or purse and take with them anywhere,” he says. “It was well received, and so
I decided to do a second collection, using the
same format with another Cape Cod publisher, Renee Roberts of Clock and Rose Press.”
Finch fell into the craft of nature writing
by accident. Early in his career he took a
part-time job at the Cape Cod Museum of
Natural History and began writing a nature
column for local weekly newspapers.
“Doing these radio broadcasts has probably made a more honest writer
of me; that is, I don’t feel the need to always focus on natural events,” he
says. “In the first collection, and even more in this new one, there are portraits of purely human characters, and even stories of the old Cape Codders
that I heard from my long-time friend, the late Rowena Myers of Orleans.”
His book is available in local bookstores and also at roses-books.com.
Finch says he tried to choose essays that still hold up six months or even six
years after they were broadcast.
