T
he Board of Trustees at ALHOSN University held their third meeting on December 6th, 2006, under the presidency of H.E.
Musallam Bin Saeed Al Qubaisi, Chair of the Board, and in the presence of Professor Abdul Rahim Sabouni, the Vice Chancellor
of ALHOSN University and the Board of Trustees’ members.
The Board discussed the proposed reports for the previous period of the university including the academic, financial and
administration reports, in addition to the achievements of the public relations.
The Board was briefed on the work in progress at the university and agreed to the academic programs that have been planned for
the academic accreditation at the Ministry of High Education and Scientific Research. The Board also approved the annual budget
for scientific research and development for faculties’ members for the academic year 2006 – 2007.
Other faculty budgets were also approved as well as the budgets for all students’ activities and services.
One of the Board’s decision was the approval of the new laboratories facilities which have been recently acquired by the university
and supplied with the latest technical equipment for engineering programs. This technology was recommended by a variety of
academic program developers from Canadian universities.
A
LHOSN University has announced the accreditation of its new
post graduate programs, Master of Education and Diploma of
Education.
“The Master of Education targets teachers whose bachelor degrees are
in education or a related field, whereas the Diploma of Education targets
those teachers who have their degrees in various scientific fields but
they do not hold any qualifications in education”, stated Professor Abdul
Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor of ALHOSN University.
The Diploma consists of 30 credit hours which gives 21 credit hours for professional requirements and 9 credit hours for field
experience. On the other hand, the Master is a 33 credit hour degree which gives 21 credit hours for core courses, 3 credit hours
for electives and 9 credit hours for research and its methods.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and

ALHOSN University Implements New
Online Registration System
ffective Spring Semester 2007, ALHOSN University is
adding a new feature to its facilities and is implementing a
new online registration system. The system’s name is e-register
which was developed by Adaptive TechSoft and Emitac.
By applying this system, it helps students, faculty members
and registration staff to improve the registration process. The
new system passed through different customization stages to
fit the university’s program structures and registration policies.
On the other hand, Professor Ahmad Zohdi, the Dean of the
Faculty of Business said: “the new system made life easier for
students and staff as well. It can stand alone as a student guide
by itself. Students can now follow their study plans and consider
the priority of course prerequisites”
“I found e-register very useful and it saved
me time when I registered. However, I
faced some problems when I tried to add
some courses, but the admission staff
were helpful in sorting them out” Mariam
Al Hosani, undergraduate student in the
Department of Business Administration.
“It’s a valuable add-on tool for the university
which facilitates the learning process for
students” she added.
It was important for us to evaluate the system and ask
different people in different departments and majors about
their experiences and the way they dealt with it. We queried at
the beginning of the process from people who worked on the
technical part of the system and we found the following:
“It took six months to implement e-register” Dr. Adel Khelifi, IT
Director stated. “During that time, many testing trails were
executed to make the system ready for students to register
their courses” he added.
Khalid Al Ansari, MBA student, liked the
system. “E-register reduces the registration
time, and now I can do the registration in
my office without being at the university
during working hours”, he added. “It has a
user friendly interface and is easy to follow
the steps” Khalid commented.
“E-register is an excellent tool and perfect solution to solving
the missing components in the registration process” said Dr.
Hamdi Sheibani, Admission & Registration Director.
“During the live implementation of e-register with students, it
was important to stay close to them when using the system.
Many students needed help and guidance on how to use the
new system” said Dr. Sheibani.

n order to improve the technical quality of the university’s engineering
programs at ALHOSN University, a delegation visited several Canadian
universities to study their laboratories’ equipment and technological advances
for the following programs: Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Architectural Engineering, Interior Design. ALHOSN intends to model the
design and layout of the Canadian laboratories in their own recently acquired
Engineering laboratories.
Of special interest were the laboratories at Toronto’s Ryerson University
which are used for mechanical industrialization.
In addition, the equipment used in the laboratories of the civil engineering
department at Ryerson University is unique in its up to date application
for testing reinforced concrete and metal structures including statistical and
dynamic workplaces.
Upon conclusion of this visit, the delegation decided to buy the best
equipment needed in order to furnish ALHOSN’s laboratories in a similar
manner.

The term software engineering was popularized after
1968, during the 1968 NATO Software Engineering
Conference.
Software engineering relates to the design, development,
documentation and maintenance of software (computer
applications). It builds its practices in an engineering framework
based on technologies and lessons learned from computer
science, project management, application-specific domains
and other fields.
Software Engineering usually has to do with the «process» of
creating software. This would cover things like methodologies,
metrics, project management and the like. This does not suggest
that software engineers are not involved in programming or
computer systems details. On the contrary, software engineers
are supposed to be competent in these fields.
Many software companies and other industries adopt the
«Software Engineer» as an official title. Though most of
software engineers may have earned their titles by practice (in

Software Engineering: the art of

Academically, software engineering programs were initially
offered as graduate studies requiring either a prior formal

The Urban Planning students participated in the Ajman Urban
Planning Award 2007 held February 19-20, 2007 in Ajman. Prior
to the event, the team engaged in a week-long workshop which
was organized by Dr. Adnan Husnein, Urban Planning program
coordinator, February 21-25, 2007. The workshop dubbed “THE
FIRST URBAN DESIGN CHARRETTE at ALHOSN” proved to
be an intense yet wonderful exercise. According to Dr. Husnein,
students enjoyed the charrette because it provided a practical and
solid design experience which is not normally experienced in the undergraduate curriculum. The
charrette results were assembled and presented through several posters, a powerpoint presentation
and a written report.
Moreover, the students’ participation was acknowledged before the conference’s delegates who
consisted of dignitaries and renowned experts in the fields of urban planning, real estate, property
development and media representatives.
ALHOSN Goes Green!
The Urban Panning students are spearheading
efforts to launch a recycling campaign on campus.
Their slogan is “Let’s Go Green!” They have already
established contact with the Environment Agency
in Abu Dhabi. There have also been plans to join
the Environment Friends Society in their effort to
mobilize schools and universities to start their own
recycling programs. For now, the aim is to begin
with a “paper only” recycling program.
