Kiukok paints fish with all their bones exposed and intentionally
avoided the scale and skin as these would render them too
realistic.

From being dark, foreboding, and even grim, Kiukok's fish
series steadily evolved with years to become more celebratory
and upbeat. This work from 1975 straddles that transitory
period, the cusp, where he moves, as it were, into the light.

Signed, dated and inscribed "Al amic gustavo camps", this
charcoal work of a street violinist accompanied by a child
holding up a platter for alms is, in all likelihood, one of the
many interesting denizens that peppered the streets of
Barcelona which he called home from for nine years.

(a.) An early work from 1945, this piece is an outstanding example
of how Rodriguez is able to meld his mastery of the printmaking
technique (a Western form) with that of traditional Filipino imagery,
such as the one rendered here in modernist mode: male and
female figures pounding grain and formed by geometric shapes.
(b.) Another fine example of how Rodriguez deftly brings together
Western art styles with a uniquely Filipino subject matter, in this
case a tribesman with a shield adorned with traditional patterns, a
spear and earrings.

This work by Lorenzo from 1953 entitled "Bahay Kubo" is a pertinent
example of how the artist remained committed to his favorite subject matter,
rural landscapes, even as he pursued a more modernist bent. It is said that
he was greatly influenced by Italian Naturalism and Impressionism, which is
not at all unlikely due to his further studies at the Accademia de Belle Arti
and the Scuola Libera, both in Italy.

“Yellow is a very favorable vibration for mental or intellectual activity as
it promotes a clear state of mind. Yellow heightens your awareness and
alleviates depression, sadness, or any kind of despondency.” (T. Yun
Kim, The First Element: Secrets to Maximizing Your Energy.”) The late Lee
Aguinaldo was an avid student of Josef Albers’s theory on the interaction of
color, of which his series “Homage to the Square” was the visual exemplar.
Appropriating the geometric shape, Aguinaldo produced his own series titled
“Circulation.” (The other series he was famous for was titled “Linear.”) Within
the tight and disciplined confine of the square, Aguinaldo held in opposition
one dominant color hemmed in by the tension of another, closing in from
all four sides. The result is the extraordinary radiance that emanates as if
from within a molten light, summoned by the artist’s masterly and controlled
handling of the brush, which gradates the distribution of pigment to fine
degrees of either warm or cold hues and tones.
As one of the pioneers of Philippine abstraction, Lee Aguinaldo left an
enduring legacy of artworks – refined, contemplative, intensely minimalist but
redeemed by his exquisite taste for bold and braze colors.

Marina Cruz’ multimedia works delve on the unearthed and retrieved—from
infant dresses to empty domestic spaces to old photographs.
By gently probing into the past, she explores the challenge of giving visibility
and materiality to such absence. Flower Girls is one such representation
wherein Cruz paints a portrait of two grave girls clothed in white. For
Cruz, materialization does not end with the evidence but in the active
performance--hence the artist’s intervention of “sewing” and “stitching”
another layer, as if to confirm the authenticity of the proof.

J. Elizalde Navarro regarded himself first and foremost as an abstractionist.
As such he has always held as a primary influence on his works the art of
the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, regarded, together with Piet Mondrian,
as the pioneer of abstraction.

Kandinsky was obsessed with geometric forms, in particular the circle,
which he believed to be “a link with the cosmic”. In 1926, he painted a work
titled “Several Circles”, a groundbreaking work that showed the path to
endless possibilities.
Navarro himself found a deeply spiritual affinity with the circle, which later,
in his own distinctive style, he evolved and applied in round, flat discs of
multicolored acrylic globules, massed and orchestrated in a pointillistic
manner. “The Unforgettable Visit” memorializes the very first time the artist
set foot in New York where, at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), he
beheld for the first time, and was spellbound by the sight of Kandinsky’s
life – changing works.

Teodoro Buenaventura is considered as one of the early masters of classical
realism. In 1899, he opened a school in his home, the Academia de Dibujo
y Pintura, where, among those he mentored, was Isidro Ancheta, Jorge
Pineda, and Fernando Amorsolo.
As a sizable number of his oeuvre was shamefully destroyed during WWII, an
early work of this caliber - of beautiful, almost fairly-like maidens lounging by
a stream in a forest - comes only once very so often.

National Artist J. Elizalde Navarro was renowned for the great variety and
diversity of his works. So encompassing was his graphic skills that they
ranged from the conservative and classical down to Pop and Abstraction, all
of which left their distinctive mark in Navarro’s oeuvre. The incorporation of
text imagery, recalling early Picasso’s “Ma Joli,” was a trademark of Navarro’s
Pop iconography. A superb example is the work titled “Paradis” (1996).
The painting is inscribed with the word “Paradis” (French for paradise) and
animated by seemingly unrelated images of a spaceman, a floating planet
Earth, an elephant, a deer.
Not known to many is that Navarro was a dance enthusiast, watching mainly
on cable TV many dance performances. He was engrossed by the dynamics
of choreography and challenged himself to translate an art of time and
motion into the static medium of painting. “Paradis” was an actual dance
performed in Manila sponsored by the French Embassy. It is an exultant
work brimming with a fond memory and brilliant chromatic exhilaration.

style he's known for -- he injects the inherently emotion-less cubism with
human emotion, in this case a sense of celebration and nationalistic pride -"Heroes" is undeniably vintage Legaspi.

The painting is accompanied by a certificate issued by Josefa
Joya - Baldovino confiriming the authenticity of the lot.
In 1958, a year prior to the execution of this work, Joya had earned his MFA
from the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art where he studied under the
tutelage of Hungarian art teacher Zoltan Zepeshy, the same professor who
taught Anita Magsaysay-Ho decades earlier. This era -- the mid to late fifties
-- saw Joya’s early forages into the abstract and the birthing of a style that
would prove to be his ultimate strength as an artist.

While the National Artist gained renown for his sweeping murals depicting
celebratory and historical slices of Philippine rural life, it is not to say that his
smaller works display a lesser virtuoso. As is beautifully depicted in this watercolor
study for a magazine publication, showing a couple in traditional Filipino costume
performing the social dance of Tarlac called the La Jota Montadena, Botong
showcases a rarely seen lightness of hand that evokes the gracefulness of his
subjects -- and a soft touch that perfectly captures the shadow and light, the
creases and the folds in the almost satiny fluidity of the couple's garb.

who also ventured into painting. She served as her father’s studio
assistant and thus was able to see and imbibe first hand her father at
work. Still, while she is also into genre subjects similar to that of her
father, the style and execution is very much her own.

Refugio “Puring” Aquino.
Acquired from the above by the present owner.
Jorge Pineda was considered the leading illustrator of his time, which he
owed to having been mentored by Teodoro Buenaventura. As a painter,
he was a contemporary of Fernando Amorsolo yet he pursued a different
trajectory in terms of subject matter. In his genre scenes, he favored
traditional Filipino games like the Sungka, which he wonderfully captured in
this work from 1933.
Leon Gallery is delighted to present this work descending from a very
important private collection. Refugio "Puring" Aquino, wife of the industrialist
Rafael Aquino, was a prominent socialite and one of the most influential art
collectors of her time. It has been written that her collection consisted of,
among others, pieces by Carlos "Botong" Francisco and major works by
Fernando Amorsolo. In the late 70's, she decided to dispose of a part of her
holdings which the Central Bank then acquired.

Lynyrd Arwyn Paras stands out among his contemporaries due to his
unwavering commitment to the art of portraiture, where his subjects,
all based on real life individuals, are depicted in close up and almost
always occupy the whole canvas. Layering is also a technique that
Lynyrd employs, and this can be best observed in this piece and how
he frames text and other visual details within an image.

Rodel Tapaya’s penchant for narrating mythologies in one frame
is evident in Lost Saw. Albeit, in this piece, the story is not
anywhere near folklore memory, a deep well of ideas where he
usually gets inspiration. Two men are lost in the midst of the
dense woods, looking for their saw. On their heads is a sorry
crop of cut tree trunks. Lost Saw is the artist’s version of a
dreaded urban myth—that of man as the architect of his own
destruction.

Galicano is a portraitist of note who describes his style as
technically academic yet abstract in philosophical approach.
Vertical lines accentuate his works, which he says is a
reconciliation of opposite poles. He took private art lessons
from Martino Abellana, considered the Amorsolo of Cebu.
In this outstanding piece, Galicano masterfully captures the
image of a T'Boli woman, one of the indigenous peoples of
South Cotabato in Southern Mindanao, and the richness of her
costume and her beadwork accessories.

Contained in a beautifully intricate wooden frame, this depiction of a fish
vendor in oil-on-board is classic Manansala. It showcases his signature
melding of rural romanticism and urban chaos, employing his signature
transparent cubism, a style he personally developed where shapes and
figures in different degrees of faintness brilliantly overlap to magically create
human forms and atmosphere. This particular piece was a gift by the artist
to the revered journalist Jose "Joe" Guevarra whose column at the Manila
Bulletin is considered an institution in Philippine publishing. The National
Artist's signature appears in the work itself and at the back.

The National Artist famously like to bring the cultures of the provinces and
the city together. One such masterpiece result is this mother-and-child
painting that shows a woman from the barrio cradling her infant, seemingly
lost and homeless in the grey urban landscape. One of two gifts by the artist
to the highly regarded columnist Jose "Joe" Guevarra, who is known for his
incisive commentaries on politics and the issues of the day, the artwork-contained in an intricately carved wooden frame--employs Manansala's
signature transparent cubism in which tones, shapes and patterns delicately
combine, overlapping each other, to form figures and scenery.

Monopoly brings us back to the jumpstart of Buen Calubayan’s artistic
trajectory. Before his venture into somber autobiographical portraiture and
antiseptic curatorial explorations, Calubayan’s body of work was heaving
mass of rage against institutions—from the Church to the Market. Monopoly
is from the Barcode Series, a set of five chiaroscuro portraits painted on
narrow slabs of wood and then put together to conjure the image of a
barcode—a universal sign of value for money. Monopoly is a fragment of
Calubayan’s damnation of man to consumerism, made evident by a face
melting away to an overwhelming capitalist-induced homogeneity.

Alcuaz, renaissance man and international artist, renders in this piece from
1987 a series of steps, heading upward, that are situated within a densely
forested area. From the image being depicted, one can imagine the steps
leading up to a large house that probably enjoys a breathtaking view of the
environs below. Its style – the brush strokes and color palette in particular
– are distinctively Alcuaz. Though it is difficult to determine the setting, it
could very well be from one of the many places that the artist has visited as
a season traveler.

interpretation of a mother tutoring her child as another lady looks on. It's

One of Costantino Zicarelli’s early forays into art is a series of
portraits based on old photos of his ancestors. Untitled Portrait for
a Dead Mother is borne of this autobiographical streak, mainly an
exercise of the new-fangled on the technicalities of the craft. But the
earnestness of the personal portrait becomes just a primer for this
experimental multimedia artist, who went on to break the solemnity of
his confessional by scribbling graffiti over his own work—informing us
of Zicarelli’s tendency to transgress private holy grounds as his artistic
identity.

Iconic Philippine artist Santi Bose’s prolonged travels abroad informed
his mixed media pieces with a deep sense of displacement—one that he
actively resisted though mixing signs and symbols of colonial/neocolonial
interventions and images of folk and local traditions. Bose harnessed
the irony and wry humor of every incongruent detail to deconstruct and
reconstruct cultural identity as vigilance and resistance. Curiously, this noise
is not visible in Heart Assemblage, an unabashed image of a huge heart
cleanly divided into sixteen quadrilateral pieces by wooden frames. In and
around the heart are letters from the ancient Filipino alphabet.
Bose, the founder of a thriving artist community in Northern Philippines,
painted the mountains of his home in the horizon, pointing to a coming to
terms with the sparse and essential.

This still life is considered by many as a form of the Tipos del Pais for they
magnify another aspect of human life - events of the day in periodicals,
diaries, and letters. When read carefully, the newspaper of the day with
its date tells of the occurrences of what transpired in the very period of
the paintings execution. As in the more familiar form of the Tipos del
Pais, pioneered by Damian Domingo, it tells of the Filipinos’ existence in
the form of a visual album of the various inhabitants of the land. Here, it
is a conveyance of life in the personal, economic and political sense and
obviously as subjects of the King of Spain.
Leon Gallery is honored to present this very rare watercolor from a very

1897, no information is known of the artist but an extant work (perhaps the
only other one in existence) is in the Dr. Eleuterio Pascual Collection.

From the tradition of CJ Tanedo’s oeuvres of hazy rendering of surreal
worlds, Music portrays an inert child painted with a clown’s face. Tanedo’s
usual execution of human skin, with Renaissance glow brought about by
soft collusion of warm colors, is not apparent in here, revealing an attempt
to thwart the cliché of his subject. In this piece, Tanedo wrenches out light,
literally and figuratively, swathing innocence with shadows. Music plays
according to the rhythm of Tanedo’s ominous Biblical meta-narrative of the
damned man infused all throughout his body of works.

This piece by Ocampo from 1951 is done in the cubist style and features a
dancing woman and the mythical colorful Sarimanok of the Maranaos. Here,
Ocampo melds a modern artistic style to interpret a traditional Moro theme
(with his inclusion of a star and the crescent moon) and the result is a work
that is dynamic and in motion. It was in the fifties that Ocampo earned a
string of awards -- 2nd prize from the UN Art Club in 1949-50 and 1st prize,

one of the most popular and prolific editorial cartoonists of that era

This landscape piece from 1944, a calming seaside scene, is
special as a massive fire would destroy a bulk of his works in 1945.

Justiniano Asuncion or "Capitan Ting" as he was fondly called was one of
the foremost Filipino painters that emerged from the 19th century. Having
honed his artistic talents at the Academia de Dibujo which was opened
by Damian Domingo, Asuncion's metier as a painter revolved around
religous paintings and tipos del pais - portraits that depict native Filipinos in
costumes and traditional attire.
There are extremely few surviving works by Justiniano Asuncion that are
signed. Majority of his works have remained attributions. These two signed
works - "India Mestiza de China" and "Espanola,” both from the collection of
Ramon Menendez Pidal - are pertinent examples of his mastery of tipos del
pais where each of the subject's clothing - the embroidery, the prints, and
the colors - are exceptionally rendered.
Apart from being fine works of art, each piece serves as an excellent
document of a bygone era - its mores, traditions, and perhaps the standing
of women in society.

Acquired from the above by the present owner.
The period of 1945 to 1963 in the artistic life of HR Ocampo, otherwise
known as his transitional period, was one that was marked by an outburst
of creativity and inspiration, as his works exhibited a bigger penchant for
abstraction and stylization, and his style was clearly more developed and
mature.
“Hat Weavers”, produced in 1945, shows this maturity in his art, where a
traditional image of women hat weavers is rendered in a more abstract form:
the face is indistinguishable and the limbs are more abstract in execution.
Details on verso
The painting was acquired directly by Colonel John De Long from HR
Ocampo. Col. DeLong was stationed in the Philippines during World War II
and assigned at the Muntinlupa Prison in charge of prisoner assignments. It
was in the summer of 1945 that Col. DeLong met HR Ocampo and acquired
a total of 15 works- drawings and paintings- to which this work is one of
them. The painting was inherited by his daughter, Suzanne, in San Diego,
California.

- which he personally dedicated to a certain Capt. Boy, likely a close friend

into his brand of humor: of note is the translation of the Goodyear brand
into Filipino. Moreover, it also helps remind us of his many contributions in

David Medalla, known for his kinetic and performance art and who has been
described as an artist of “multifarious disciplines and polymorphic practices”,
thrusts through the international art scene when he was invited to participate
in the prestigious Documenta V held in Germany, which thereafter led him
to travel extensively across Europe. His works as a visual artist are inspired
by literature and his love for poetry. In 1985, the year this work was made,
Medalla returned to the Philippines after a 15-year absence to mount a
multimedia exhibit at the Pinaglabanan Galleries, one of the leading art
spaces at that time.
Stamped with the whimsy and tongue-in-cheek socio-political commentary
the art world has come to associate with his works, this piece has the
international artist indulging in playful self-mockery. Depicting a jollylooking man in a tropical setting, and wearing a straw hat and clothing that
resembles the furry covering of a brown monkey, he goes on to name the
work "L'amant de l'Opera" (which is French for opera lover), poking fun at
the sophisticated aspirations of his race. As he personally scribbled in the
sketch that accompanies the finished work, "L'amant de l'Opera" is also the
title of the poem that inspired the painting.

There is perhaps no other way to describe Ramon Estella than that of
Renaissance man. Estella was a prolific screenwriter and filmmaker who
actively made films in the pre-war era before he decided to pick up the
paintbrush in the late 50's. As a visual artist, he counted as colleagues
such prominent modernists as Hernando Ocampo, Vicente Manansala,
Cesar Legaspi, Romeo Tabuena and Victor Oteyza. Together, they branded
themselves as the “Neo-Realists” who converged at the Philippine Art Gallery
of Lyd Arguilla. Estella's style delved into Cubism and Expressionism, though
it is said that he loved to experiment and fuse varying styles.

At the center of Anita Magsaysay Ho’s paintings are women, typically women
working together in the fields, harvesting produce, tending to livestock,
etc.. They are in motion, never ever idle and rarely ever solitary. It has been
written that Anita’s paintings are projections of the self, and like her subjects
she, too, was constantly evolving as an artist -- possessing an inner strength
and quiet power.
The ink blot series, from which this painting belongs, is a style that Anita
experimented with in the early seventies. Here, her highly organized
compositions give way to experimentation and chance by flicking ink blots
into the canvas, surrounded by women that are lighter in form. Brief a foray
as this series was, Anita is said to have loved spontaneity that these works
produced.

The term santo, sometimes imagen, is a folk term meaning a Christian
religious image that may be carved, molded or painted. In the Philippines,
such religious images were produced between 1565 to 1898 by Filipino and
Chinese craftsmen, with the resulting pieces bearing Spanish, Filipino and
Chinese features.
In Spanish Manila, ivory soon became a sought-after medium for carving
religious images owing to its expensive and luxurious look as well as the
smoothness and gloss of its surface. By the nineteenth century, a certain
decadence and elaborateness in the carving of religious images in ivory
prevailed, thus becoming the standard.
19th Century Manila saw the rise of the Illustrado Class stemming from
European education of sons and daughters. The Filipino began to know
how to live, hence the appreciation for the fineries of life. Instead of sending
the Philippines' fine produce to the Acapulco trade for Spanish or Latin
American consumption, the Filipinos began to emulate the same reasons
for sending them. Thus, it was in the 19th Century that the Bahay na Bato,
the illustrado residence, evolved to being the stage of local artistry and
craftsmanship.
It is doubtless that in the international collecting arena, the HispanoPhilippine religious ivory is the most sought after. Be it in Europe or the
Americas, the "Pinoy" hand is recognised. There is something with the
"Pinoy" ivory that makes it standout.
119
Leon Gallery is honored to present one sterling representation of the
Hispano-Philippine art. The lot, from the Ramon and Cecile Blanco-Mitra
Collection, is uniquely the paramount model of fine ivory obra-maestra as
well as contemporaneous silver craftsmanship. In perfect condition, both art
forms in one is an exquisite embodiment of 19th-Century Philippine art.

In this couple of very early works from current art auction darling
Jose John Santos, one can already glean the origins of the sepia-toned touches in his later works, his fascination for old
photographs, which have won devout admiration from collectors
in his home country and abroad. Perhaps the only two existing
Santos pastel-on-paper in the Market today, these are certifiable
rarities. These two artworks also reveal that very early on, even
while he was still working as a professor at the University of the
Philippines, his eye for capturing the iconic in the everyday was
already remarkable.

Edwin Wilwayco's "In Nature's Realm II: Blue Paradise III" is a paramount
example of the artist's abstract expressionist leanings. Based in Rhode
Island, the piece is reflective of the nippy waters of the Atlantic. The
composition is complemented with swift strokes that mirror the whirring
winds of the sea. The piece likewise spiritually evinces the artist's deft use of
the color blue.

Evolution is a word that can best describe the current state of Andres
Barrioquinto's art practice. Whereas early in his career Barrioquinto
intentionally shied away from Realism, he has now embraced it, in an
attempt to stand apart from his contemporaries. His output, he also says, is
now more personal.
In this portrait which formed part of his Shadow Dancer exhibition,
Barrioquinto draws inspiration from Japanese art details, prints and designs tattoo-like elements that flood and surround this work."

Abellana has been dubbed as the “Amorsolo of Cebu” and “the dean of Cebu

immediately returned to his hometown of Carcar, Cebu, a heritage town which
served as the point of inspiration in all of his works, such as this piece, a realistic
depiction of a fisherman out at sea.

Jose Blanco was the patriarch of a clan that produced a whole progeny of
talented artists. Growing up as a fisherman in Angono - which is, after all, a
bucolic fishing town - Blanco had a penchant for depicting rural folk and rural
scenes. This piece that features a fisherman is most outstanding as it captures
the emotions of the subject where one can almost glean the hardships and
hardwork he has endured.

Leon Gallery is privileged to offer at auction one of the most important
and best-preserved works by Felix Resureccion-Hidalgo. It was in 1893 at
the Universal Exposition in Chicago, USA, where his entry, "Adios al Sol"
(Farewell to the Sun), was awarded the silver medal. It was in that very same
year that this piece by Hidalgo, which features lapping waves underneath
overcast skies, was produced.
When Felix Resureccion Hidalgo died in 1913 leaving a fortune of
real estate, shares of stock, and paintings, leaving without legitimate
descendants nor recognized natural heirs, the mother of the deceased,
Dona Maria Barbara Padilla y Flores, inherits. The next year she dies leaving
the Hidalgo-Padilla fortune to her heirs. The bulk of the paintings then went
to the “sobrinos” of Felix, namely Don Felipe Hidalgo, son of Jose; Don
Eduardo Hidalgo Paz and Dona Rosario Paz de Perez, children of his sister
Pilar who was married to Maximo Paz.

This breathtaking work by Ventura is an
exemplification of the virtuoso artist's
mastery of hyper realism as evidenced
by the perfectness of the physical

the face bathed in in pure white – and
his ability to render them with keen

are intricate details on the dress – the
curved lines, the shapes and motifs

attention to detail.

From painting warm flat fantastical paintings, Jigger Cruz took a break for
two years and then resumed sometime in 2011. Upon return, a noticeable
change took form through his surfaces that began to bubble. Cruz’s
perplexing palimpsests layer voluptuous masses of color paint over another
carefully-painted image brazenly copied from canons. Working with the
notion of defiance as defacement, Cruz deconstructs his genre through a
tangible separation of materials—paint and surface, the latter encompassing
both canvas and academic practice. Cruz draws attention away from the
surface semiotic-hunting praxis. Instead, he rechannels it towards the
exploration of art production, exploring its limitations by fetishisizing the
onerous details that, curiously, never constitute in themselves the marketable
art aura. Such a statement is encapsulated with an ornate classical frame,
mockingly sealing his self-reflexive critique with the weight of an institutional
history that both informs and restricts his practice.

Kiukok paints fish with all their bones exposed and intentionally avoided the
scale and skin as these would render them too realistic.
From being dark, foreboding, and even grim, Kiukok's fish series steadily
evolved with years to become more celebratory and upbeat. This work from
1975 straddles that transitory period, the cusp, where he moves, as it were,
into the light.

illustrations. This is a clear testimony to the betel-nut chewing tradition
practiced in all regions of the Philippines – from the Cordilleras in the North
to Tawi-Tawi in the South; in the mountains as well as on the plains; among
the Christianized and Islamized folks as well as the animistic groups.
The Las Buyeras by Jorge Pineda won a Bronze medal at the St. Louis
World’s Fair Exposition of 1904. Perhaps to the spectators, the painting’s
significance lies as much in the subject represented as in the artistry of
the creator. ‘Local color’ was, after all, what they were looking for in this
Exposition where the Philippines was introduced to the American lay person
for the first time.
1904 brought pride for the Filipino nation as medals were bagged by Filipino
artists in the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair Exposition in Chiacago, USA. The
Gold went to Juan Luna, the Silver to Felix Resureccion-Hidalgo and the
Bronze to Jorge Pineda.
At 25 years old at the time of the exposition, the mastery of genre painting
and his inclination towards delightful settings and scenery has manifested. It
is classic Pineda, where we see how he turns the spotlight on a seemingly
mundane scene, which he captures in a pleasant, casual, but nonetheless
realistic manner. Whereas Amorsolo's works spoke of exuberance, Pineda's
pieces gleamed of restraint and subtle elegance.
Las Buyeras or Betel nut vendors was a frequently depicted subject in

2013 - Painting loaned to Metropolitan Museum of Manila
Not only is it probably one of the most well-traveled pieces of Filipino art, having made the rounds of important exhibitions around the world, it has
also won plum prizes, first at the ASEAN Art Awards in 1996, and then at the Philippine Art Awards the same year where it won the Juror's Prize.
Art aficionados consider this a seminal piece in that it triggered a revolution in modern contemporary art even with its strong social realist style,
capturing an All Saint's Day scene where cemetery visitors appear to celebrate the memory of those they have lost, even as they are caught in a
maze, trapped in a labyrinth of their various and conflicting devotions. This large work was recently hanging at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila,
and its importance have been confirmed as early as the mid - 90s - at the time when auction houses abroad started taking notice of our modern
contemporary art and when the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco invited it to their 1998 show "At Home and Abroad: 21 Contemporary Filipino
Artists." In 2009, it was also loaned to the National Artist BenCab for the opening of his museum in Baguio.
