First of 2011 - Seckman Middle School
1
2011
A first day for a seventhgrader can be either very
scary, very good, or in between.
My first interview
was with Preston Smith.
Here are his answers to the questions:
Q: What was the highlight of your day?
A: Choir, simple, fun, love Mrs.
Wohlers, and having no homework in that
class.
Q: Was your first day of middle school
harder?
A: No, actually quite easier.
Q: What would you change about the
middle school to make it more like the elementary or vice-versa?
A: I would make elementary more like
middle by switching classes and having passing time.
Another seventh-grader I
interviewed was Karyna
Canario. Her answers were:
Q: What was the best part of
your day?
A: Seeing my friends that I
didn’t have classes with.
Q: What was the worst part of your
day?
A: Going to the wrong class, Adv. LA
instead of Communications…
Q: What would you change?
A: I would make the classes much closer together.
From Mrs. Casey’s advisory,
I interviewed Hayden Heselbarth. His best answers were:
Q: What was the best part of
your day?
A: Choir, because of the singing, fun,
and NO HOMEWORK.
Q: What was the worst part of your
day?
A: Long lunch lines in the cafeteria.
Ugh, that really stunk.
Q: What would you change?A: I would
make Seckman Middle more like elementary in
every way, shape, or form. One class, no lockers, no passing time, and with Ms. Moore for
advisory.
With Ms. Moore for advisory,
Savannah Pennington’s Q&A
went a little like this.
Q: What was the best part of
your day?
A: Meeting new people that I will have
class with for a year.
2
Q: What would you change?
A: I would let us have a playground
and a recess.
Q: What was your favorite class from
your first day?
A: Art. Ms. Schoue is the best.
A nice beach blonde, Luke
Mueller, was asked these
questions:
Q: What was your favorite
class from the first day?
A: Uh, FACS, because Mr.
Sattley is awesome.
Q: Was middle school harder or easier?
A: Harder, because we all have lockers.
>:(
Q: What would you change?
A: Make elementary more like middle
school because it will get you ready for high
school.
Bryanna Trtan was
the last 7th grader interviewed.
Q: What was the worst part
of your day?
A: it would have to be getting frustrated and confused with my locker.
Q: What was your favorite class?
A: LA, Mrs. Tolliver is great.
Q: Was Seckman Middle School harder
or easier?

What Do You Know About the Month
of October?
October is the 10th month of the year in the Julian and
Gregorian calendars. It has 31 days. In the Northern
Hemisphere, October is an autumn month, in the Southern Hemisphere it is a spring month.
October takes its name from octo (eight) because it was
the eight month in the old Roman calendar which began with March.
In the north temperate zone, October is the time of the
pleasant period that in the United States is called Indian
summer.
Historical Events
October 12, 1492 – Christopher Columbus discovered
America
October 21, 1805 – Nelson defeated Napoleon’s fleet at

Arnold Days
Parade
By Alix Wolf
On September 18th, the Seckman Middle
School Pommies and band marched in the Arnold Day’s Parade. That morning’s weather
was rainy. Luckily, the rain stopped late morning and the parade was able to start on schedule.
As the parade members and the spectators got ready for a fun filled parade, it began
to sprinkle. Thankfully, the sprinkles quit.
Just as the parade was beginning to
move, the skies opened up and a soaking rain
began to fall. By the time our pommies and
band members reached the end of the parade
route, they were dripping rain and shivering
cold.
After our middle school parade people
dried off and got warm, most believed it was a
funny once in a life time event. After all, how
many parades are actually held in the rain?

The Dangers of Cliff Diving.
By Ben Freeman
Did you know that 10,000 people are paralyzed each year, 10% of these incidents are caused by diving into
shallow lakes and rivers. That’s more than a 1,000 people each year.
On June 18, 2011, a 17-year old boy was paralyzed and a man’s fingers had to be amputated. It all started on
a Saturday around 4:00 p.m. The boy jumped off the north side of the bridge, 30 feet above the water, into the path of
an oncoming boat driven by Lisa Wulff. The boy then hit Todd Wulff’s, Lisa’s husband, hand with his back. The injury to his hand had caused several fingers to be amputated. The boy fractured his back and was paralyzed from the
injury.
In 2007 two southwest Missouri teens both died on June 16. Both deaths were related to cliff jumping. First,
Cameron Hines, 18 years old, suffered cardiac arrhythmia, and later died, after jumping from a bluff 30-40ft. above
the lake. Later that day Drew Summers drowned after jumping from a 30ft. bluff into Norfork Lake. He was only 16
years old.
Mrs. Cottrell’s cousin David Cottrell is one of the unfortunate people who dove into river 23 years ago. David has been quadriplegic since he was only 22 years old. Although , he had dove into this river before , it has a particularly strong current and the water is murky and one can never tell what could be underneath. He says he regrets his
decision every day, and his lifelong dream to be a farmer was ruined. He still lives on a farm with his brother who
does the farming , but he is only able to help keep track of accounting and order supplies.
Mrs. Cottrell ( Communications teacher at SMS) stated, “I always tell my students the story of my cousin
whom I love dearly. I want the kids to understand the dangers of diving in unknown waters especially rivers and
streams, and I hope that maybe at least one student has remembered the story I have told, and it has saved them from a
similar ,tragic fate.”
If you do jump, make sure you know how deep the water is before you dive. Experts recommend you only
dive waters 6 feet deep or more of water. It is also important to never swim alone, you never know when you might
get a cramp, and it only takes 4 minutes to drown.
Diving into shallow water can cause severe back, neck, and head injuries. Causing brain damage, and paralyzing the victim. Be careful and never dive into shallow water.

Ready! Hike! Are you ready for some
football? Well Seckman Middle Schoolers sure
are, and this season is starting off with a huge
touchdown as our students participated in
many events that have them outside, moving
and having fun!
The purpose of the day was not only to
provide excitement for the upcoming NFL season but to promote character in fitness in hopes
of achieving a lifelong goal of daily fitness into
the lives of our students.
We prepared for the day by decorating
classrooms and hallways in football related
themes and SMS sprit decorations which was
very fun, and got us pumped for our Assembly.
Casey’s advisory won the decorating contest
followed closely by Ms. Schoue’s class and
Mrs. Moore. The kids were then instructed to
wear their football gear such as jerseys, tshirts,
etc.
After being split up into three groups,
by students’ advisory, three groups went to
three different activities. One of the groups
played a game called Offense and Defense
based on the game Ships and Sailors. Kennedy
Wingo, our new Character Council President,
called out directions for this game. Students
had to really pay attention and get ready to
make some quick moves in order to get in the
correct groups with the right number of people.
Mr. Wucher who organized most of the activities was asked how he felt about the day's activities. He stated, “ Kick off Friday was a big
success! All the kids really seems to enjoy getting a half day for some fitness fun!”
Of course there can’t be a football game
without the traditional tailgating party. SMS
was lucky enough to feast on some of Sattley’s
best BBQ to help celebrate the kickoff.
There was no problem with the kids burning
off the energy as they moved form one activity
to the next.
The students enjoyed burgers, brats and hot
dogs. Mr. Sattley also had a specialty item on
the menu which was a caramel iced long john
stuffed with a bacon wrapped hot dog. Mr.
Sattley stated, The kids loved it!”
Overall, Mr. Sattley thought the tailgating
event went well and the kids enjoyed it. He did
wish he could have had more healthy alternatives to the menu such as chicken kabobs with
vegetables , but those items were not available.
Mr. Sattley went on to say that he was happy
to see the kids excited and he felt that the activity built up overall morale with the students
and staff. Sporting events can be motivating
for all to promote physical fitness and comradery among people as they root for their favorite teams.
Mr. Sattley treats students to a real tailgating party on
Seckamn Middle school’s lot to help kick off thew NFL
season as tradition would have it.

SMS Cheerleaders, pommies and Jaguar football team
members line up in the field to pose for a picture before the NFL kickoff celebration.
Students “huddle up” while playing
Ships n’ Sailors.
A group of SMS students enjoy some time
playing football on the SMS field. They are
pumped up and ready to go!
Students are following the directives of Kennedy
Wingo while playing Ship n’ Sailors.
Students enjoy walking around the field and talking with
their friends as one of the activities during the kickoff!
A group of girls follows another directive!!
It’s obvious the kids are having fun while engaged in physical fitness activities.

Escorts: For
Better or Worse
By Zoe Tyler
Middle school is one of the first places to give you some freedom. You are
given the freedom to choose your own electives, you receive your very own locker,
you don’t have to walk in single file lines, and so much more.
As much freedom as you’re given in middle school, Seckman Middle School
has restricted some of its freedom by adding escorts this year. At a glance, escorts
are relatively simple. A student tells their teacher that they need to go somewhere,
like their locker, the nurse, or the restroom. The teacher buzzes down an escort, such
as a principal, and the escort takes the student to where they need to go.
Ridgewood was the first school in the area to use escorts for various reasons.
One of the reasons that Seckman Middle School started escorts this year was
because girls would meet up in the bathroom to text and do their hair. Some would
even bring curling irons! Girls who were caught would have their cell phones taken
away for the day. Of course, one can see why it was implemented.
However, as bad as it sounds, meeting up in the restrooms isn’t anything
new. After talking to my own grandma, she said that this has been a problem since
she was a teen in the 1960’s. They may have not been texting back then, but they
were still wasting precious class time for the teachers. The punishment was having
the privilege of leaving the classroom alone taken away.
Although escorts allow adults to be able to monitor students, escorts have
some drawbacks. When a student has to use an escort, they can miss directions and
have less time to do their work. Escorts waste time for the principals who act as an
escort because they have to use their time to walk students to their destinations. But
most of all, escorts waste time for teachers. Teachers have to buzz down an escort,
wait for them, and explain the directions missed while the student was away.
In my opinion, I think escorts are fantastic for schools that have major trust
problems with students, but are not right for Seckman Middle School. In our
school’s environment, escorts become more of a problem rather than a solution.
They become a hassle for not only the students but for the principals and teachers. I
hope to see that the use of escorts is discontinued in upcoming years and that some
of the freedom in middle school is restored once again.

#1 DOG IN THE WORLD…….
By Ashley Shelton
My dog Franklin is a pure bread Sheltie.
My family has had him for about 10-14 months,
He is a feisty little boy. Also, he loves his squeaky ferret
toy. He loves long walks in my neighborhood . Normally
we walk for about 30-37 minutes every other day. My baby boy Franklin knows tricks like down, sit, stay. His favorite game to play is tug-of-war with his toys!! He loves
his Pupperonis. When we adopted Franklin he was a curious little ball of fur. His paws were so tiny as a puppy!!!
He has one blue eye and one brown eye which I think is
adorable in my perspective. I LOVE MY DOG!!!!!!

Similar to paintball, air soft consists of a number of players fighting for an
objective. This objective can be eliminating all the opposing players, capturing an important object, or protecting someone or something.
Air soft is popular in North America and Europe. Like paintball, you fight with guns: air
soft guns. These guns fire plastic bb's, and are usually made of plastic, metal, or nylon fibers. Upon getting hit with a bb, it feels like someone flicking you; nothing life threatening.
Air soft guns look much like real guns because they are based on real guns. M4's, Ak-47's,
and a variety of pistols are the most popular guns. Guns are classified into groups; assault rifles,
machine guns, sub-machine guns, pistols, sniper rifles, shotguns, and explosives. They are grouped
because of size and fps ( feet per second.)
For the most part, air soft is a sport for kids in backyards, but many adults play realistic
wars in forests, old buildings, and large complexes. I find air soft to be a fun, exiting sport for
everyone to enjoy. You can find air soft guns in stores and online.
Cross Country
Written by: Emily Mueller
Cross Country is an after- school activity that
started in August, the second day of school
and goes until the end of October. The Cross
Country team is sponsored and coached by Ms.
Heine and Ms. Williams.
The other day I got a chance to sit down with
Ms. Heine and ask a few questions about the
team. When asked what the purpose of the
club is she stated, "It's so the kids can have a
life-long love for fitness and running, and to set
goals for the rest of their lives, and to have
them feel good when they achieve them."
The team meets after school until four every day, Monday through Friday. Ms. Heine explained
what the team's special activities are: "The team will compete in seven meets around the county,
four of them at the high school. The team will also share buses with Antonia Middle School, and
do a celebration called ‘The Jag Bull’. The team's first meet will be September 10th."
Ms. Heine went on to say, "The best part is anybody can join, and anyone that didn't run this season has the chance to participate in the winter running club that starts this November."
In closing, the Cross Country Team is a great way to stay fit, active, and have a great time!

club. Five of the students are 7th graders and 7 are 8th
graders
• Lindsey Fiala and Breanna Dale are the editors of
the club. The club is in charge of putting together
the yearbook and also do some artistic work when
need arises. The yearbooks are already on sale for
32 dollars and you don’t want to miss out on it so
please purchase one soon!
• They meet after school every Wednesday until 3:30.
Seckman Middle School has a special talent among us
known as the Jag Choir. This group is quite special ,for
no other middle school has a group quite like ours. Mrs.
Wohlers has been sponsoring a small group of strong
vocalists for years who are quite busy exercising their
vocal chords to perform at our intramurals and assemblies. This year they also will perform at the elementary
school and the Mountain Climbers Banquet. At Christmas time they will perform in the lobby of the visitors’
center at the “Way of Lights”. Among all the concerts
and other performances they will have, they will also be
trying out for the Seckman High School talent show.
Last year’s Jag Choir were apart of that show, and we
hope the best of luck to this year’s Jag Choir as well.
Here are the list of out singing superstars:
Conner Scott Bailey Crase, Brandon Carney, Preston
Smith, and Olivia Deer.
S-E-C-K-M-A-N Seckman ! Seckman! I am sure you
have heard this cheer around school. It’s one of the favorites among our Blue and Gold squads here at SMS.
Amazing cheer coach Mrs Wingo and her outstanding
assistant Mrs. Perkins sponsor these spirited ladies every
Tuesday evening from 2:30 until 4:45.
You probably already noticed the cheerleaders marching
in the parade proudly supporting their teams and their
school. They perform at the intramurals and at our assemblies. They work hard to perfect their routines and
are a very talented group of young ladies. Currently, we
have 36 girls on our squad. We wish the cheerleaders the
best for this school year and thank them for creating a
spirited environment.
Another group we are very proud of at our school is the
SMS Pom Squad. They have been very busy so far this
year. They meet after school every Monday evening
until 4:30 P. M. Mrs. Mueller and Mrs. Moore are the
sponsors . They have already marched in two parades
and will be performing at SMS assemblies and intramural games. Currently we have 41 girls on the squad and
they are proud to perform for SMS.
There isn’t any event that would not be complete without music. They perform in competitions, parades, assemblies, and any school event where school spirit is
promoted. Mr. Simino, our new band teacher, is happy
to lead them. He also runs an after-school drum line on
Thursdays until 4:30. Keep on rockin’ SMS Band!
12
On Thursday after school an interesting group meets in room 11 with Mrs. Tolliver to discuss
….well..believe it or not, books. This exclusive club shares a love of reading and choose books to
read and discuss as a group and sometimes they bring in treats to share amongst each other. There
are about 15 members in the group who meet regularly and enjoy the club very much.
LOUD CROWD
The Loud Crowd is just that “LOUD”! They attend our home football and basketball games. They
are a group of kids who are there to support Seckman teams and shout out cheers, chants,
screams...whatever it takes to help motivate the crowd to get spirited.
This is a new pep squad sponsored by Mrs. Stokes and Mrs. Wohlers and has about 20 members
at present.
We are excited about this new group at SMS and are happy to see them and ,of course, hear them
at the games.

So, you’re reading the JJJ. But who writes it, and what do they do? Well we’re going to
answer that. Also, what teachers help with the writing?
The Junior Jag Journal, or JJJ, is responsible for the schools newspaper and media. The
head editor is Mrs. Cottrell. Everything we write, make, or photograph goes through her.
There are 16 staff members on the JJJ: John Baker, Sam Schueddig, Ashley Shelton, Jessica Clones, Katelyn Brannam, Patricia Neniel, Jade Ducote, Emma Solovic, Hannah Spears, Nicholas Pope, Emily Mueller, Joclyn Key, Alix Wolff, Lexie Luiwege, Taylor Phillips, and Zoe Tyler are the wonderful reporters.
Some of the things we are responsible for is a media presentation for the Veteran’s Breakfast and 8th grade slideshow. There will be about 5 newspaper editions out this year and they
come bi- monthly

An Interview with
Mr. Davis:
The new
Librarian at
SMS
By Katelyn Brannam
Mr. Davis is
our new librarian. He
has been with the district
four years now. He has
worked at almost every
school in the district and
loves being part of the
school.
One question
that took a while to answer was “What are
your goals as an educator?” His answer was: to
help students, encourage
reading, and to make the
school a fun environment for everyone.
When asked why he took the position
at SMS, Mr. Davis responded, “Well, the position opened, and I was eager to work with older kids and do something new.” Mr. Davis became a teacher because he stated,” I love being
in a school environment, working with the
teachers and students.” Mr. Davis stated that
he likes the fact that he feels part of a family
already here at SMS. It’s even better that he
can stay in one building instead for traveling
around from school to school within the district for the last 3 years.
We heartily welcome Mr. Davis to
SMS and hope that he has a great school year.
Mr. Steis : SMS New

students successful by helping them succeed.
His favorite quote is: “Be kinder than necessary because everyone around you is fighting
their own battle.” Mr. Steis has taught so far at
Perryville High School, Ridgewood, Seckman
High School, assistant at Fox High School, and
Ridgewood .This year he hopes to make
changes in health, gym, and social studies. He
has been in the teaching world for 19 years. All
schools have been great to him. He’s thankful
that he’s able to change teaching jobs. Each
stop has made an impact on him in many ways.
He wanted to become a teacher so that he
could make an impact on changing a person`s
life. Mr. Sties is married and has 3 kids and a
dog.
Ms. Emerson: Foreign
Language Teacher
By : Jocelyn Key
Ms. Emerson is the Spanish teacher at SMS.
This is her 3rd year teaching. She took the position at SMS because her dad worked in the Fox
C–6 district and she knew that she wanted to
be a part of it. Her goals are to spread her love
of Spanish to the people she meets. Both of her
parents were teachers, so that inspired her to
become one. Her favorite thing about SMS so
far is the school spirit. Some projects she has
planned this year are ordering Spanish magazines from Mexico and doing more for the
community. So far, she isn`t married. Once she
had a turtle, but she had to give it away. Ms.
Emerson also teaches at Antonia Middle
School. When she lived in Chicago, she taught
at Centennial High School. She started to
speak Spanish because of her nanny and her
mom. When she was older, she started to take
Spanish classes. Now, she is teaching Spanish
to us. In her spare time, she likes to run, spend
time with her dad and go to Starbucks.

The Hunger Games
is the first of a popular trilogy written
by Suzanne Collins.
It takes place in North America… in the future.
North America becomes Panem, a glimmering
Capitol surrounded by twelve districts. For the
past seventy-three years, the Capitol has demanded one boy and one girl between the ages
of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games. In order to win, you must
kill and remain in one piece throughout the entire Games. Only one can win out of the twenty
-four, something Katniss Everdeen and Peeta
Mellark, a fellow contestant from her district,
knows.
From my point of view, this is definitely a breather from most of the vampire, magic,
and poorly twisted Greek mythology books out
there, mainly because the main character is not
some obvious chosen one or a lovesick bat. I
would recommend this book to anyone, which
is convenient for them since the movie is coming up. The slightly overdone trailer can be
found on Facebook.

The VMAs (Video Music Awards)
were on MTV on August 28. Katy Perry won
Video of the Year for her song “Firework”,
and, in my opinion, was the best choice. Tyler
the Creator won Best New Artist award, but if
you ask, me has a terrible video. He sits there
and raps with creepy eyes and pretends to eat a
bug, wow. Britney Spears won best pop video
with “‘Till the World Ends”, but Katy Perry’s
“Last Friday Night” video was hilarious. The
Foo Fighters won Best Rock Video for
“Walk”. Nicki Minaj won Best Hip-Hop Video
for “Super Bass,” which was very much deserved! Lady Gaga won Best Female Video
Award for “Born This Way.” Justin Bieber
won Best Male Video for “U Smile” which
means the Bieber Fever is spreading rapidly.
Oh no! Katy Perry won for best collaboration,
and Kanye West couldn’t ruin it because he
won too. Lady Gaga also won Best Video with
a Message Award for “Born This Way,” but
really Taylor Swift should’ve one. Anyone
who can turn something your mom says into a
good song definitely needs an award. Congrats
to all the winners!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
By Jessica Clones
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is a PG-13 adventure/drama/fantasy movie that
came out on July 15, 2011. This particular movie was directed by David Yates. The stars of this
movie are Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasly), Emma Watson (Hermione
Granger), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), Alan Rickman (Professor Severus Snape), Matthew
16
Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Michael Gambon (Professor Albus
Dumbledore), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Warwick Davis (Griphhok/Professor Filius Flitwick), Jason Isaacs (Lusius Malfoy), Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Bonnie Wright
(Ginny Weasly), and David Thewlis (Remus Lupin). The performances were amazing, and you got
the sense of actually being there, along with all of the characters we’ve grown to know so well.
This movie takes place in England in 1997. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is
about Harry Potter and his friends on their last quest to defeat Lord Voldemort. In my opinion, this
movie was amazing. With the first part not being so good, it really was a hit. It seemed the audience loved it too, as there were many people dressed up and enthusiastic on opening night. Everyone seemed to cheer as our heroes defeated Voldemort, once and for all. In fact, I thought the
movie was so good that I saw it twice, both times in 3D. The 3D, in my opinion, was not that crucial to get the overall experience. Most of the time, the 3D only added to some effect, as you’re too
caught up in the movie to notice it. During some parts though, the 3D does make a difference. Other than those few parts, you could barely tell it was there. Believe it or not, there is a theme to this
movie. This theme runs through all of the movies and books. The theme in “Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hollows: Part 2” is good versus evil. I would definitely recommend this movie to a friend.
I think that Warner Bros. did a great job on creating the last, and most important, epic tale to the
“Harry Potter” series. It was a great way to end this decade of wizardry. If you have read or seen
any of the “Harry Potter” series, or even if you haven’t, it’s an overall amazing movie that you
should look into watching. Seeing the characters grow on-screen makes it all the more exciting.
Don’t miss the final installment of the “Harry Potter” series because it’s the last one and it all ends
here.
