(248 mm) diameter The Ellis Williams Story Ellis Williams began his life’s work with mud pumps in 1942. Researching, designing, testing—he was relentless in his efforts to build pumps with greater efficiency and durability for rugged oilfield operations. 78 in. (198 cm) Over the next 30 years, Williams pioneered single-acting, triplex pumps for oilfield drilling. He built many of these ground-breaking pumps for Brewster (the Skytop Brewster triplex pumps). By the 1970s, most pumps in the industry were designed by Ellis Williams. Clearly, he was ready to design and build superior mud pumps under his own banner. And thus, in 1974, the Ellis Williams Company was born. For more than 30 years, the name Ellis Williams was synonymous with efficient, innovative and extremely durable pumps. Ellis Williams originated the use of all-roller bearings, eccentric crankshafts and internal gears and wrote AGMA Standard (424.01) “Practice for Helical and Herringbone Gearing for Oilfield Mud Pumps.” The company was known for designing and building drilling pumps without comparison in the industry. Acquiring Ellis Williams in 2008, Weatherford leverages Ellis Williams’ 130 years of experience and continues the tradition of full-service engineering and consulting for pumps and pump packages. We also provide consultation on pump applications, field service analysis and pump maintenance. Ellis Williams wrote the book on mud pumps—a work in progress now under the auspices of the Weatherford name. From design to construction, Weatherford’s Ellis-Williams™ mud pumps are intended to meet tough and exacting standards. All Ellis-Williams pumps are manufactured in the USA. We cut our own patented herringbone gears, which contribute to the longer life span of our pumps. Our crankshafts are also a cut above. Instead of the automotive style, we make all eccentric crankshafts with anti-friction bearings for 25 percent greater efficiency. And while others use cast iron, our longer-lasting crankshafts are constructed with forged steel. All Ellis-Williams pumps offer anti-friction roller bearings throughout without compromise: pinions, gears, crankshafts and fluid-end modules made from high-strength, heat-treated, forged-alloy steel; versatility of engineering and design to accommodate various internal gear ratios, all sizes, all AGMA 424.01; and balanced, forged-alloy steel eccentric crankshafts, machined between centers on all axes for perfect balance and vibration free operation. (277 cm) Manufactured in our own machine shop, every Ellis-Williams™ pump is fabricated with a high-strength, heat-treated alloy steel power frame. This method allows for easy modification of pump designs to meet your custom applications. With more than 125 package options, Weatherford can provide complete Ellis-Williams pump packages, including prime movers, controls, manifolds, piping, accessories and so on. We can mount equipment on heavy-duty oilfield or industrial-type skids. And we can supply portable, trailer-mounted units, top-drive electric-motor-driven units, or whatever your application demands. In addition to our renowned triplex pumps, Weatherford is one of the few companies in the industry to offer the advanced Quintuplex pumps. In drilling situations where size and weight are critical, these innovative pumps can be extremely cost efficient. All Ellis-Williams pumps deliver maximum performance per pound: • Single-acting triplex piston and plunger pumps for true, continuous duty up to 3,000 hp (2237.1 kW) • Single-acting, all-roller-bearing Quintuplex piston and plunger mud pumps up to 3,000 hp with all fluid-end interchangeability options • Up to 20,000 psi (137.8951 MPa) continuous-duty fluid ends • Interchangeable fluid-end styles with all other types, including linear bore We can provide each unit with common accessories, including discharge dampeners, gauges, relief valves, charge pumps and the like. These pulsations also affect the performance of MWD and LWD systems, and complex software algorithms have been deployed to filter out the pulsations. The Quintuplex Advantage Continuous hydraulic horsepower rates you expect, but in a smaller weight and footprint for those sites with weight and size limitations. The five-cylinder quintuplex pump delivers smooth output flow by design. Total flow variation is only 7 percent of the average on a quintuplex pump vs. 23 percent on a conventional triplex pump. This translates into a significant drop in mud pressure pulsations created by the pump that are directly transmitted to the pump components, discharge piping, and ultimately the drill string itself. This dramatically reduces the reliance on pulsation dampeners and software to achieve efficient and profitable drilling operations. Thi inherent design of a five-cylinder pump dramatically reduces mud noise, which improves mud telemetry and data acquisition, making it the most MWD/LWD-friendly mud pump on the market. Weatherford’s Ellis-Williams patented quintuplex pump represents the next true evolution of the modern mud pump since the introduction of the single-acting triplex mud pump over 50 years ago. The single-acting triplex mud pump that is still the industry standard today imparts high pressure pulsations into the discharge mud stream as a result of the flow variations generated by the action of three cylinders pumping at 120° increments around the crankshaft. This results in a total flow variation of 23 percent; 6 percent above and 17 percent below the average or mean flow rate. Drillers have historically used large, maintenance prone, and expensive pulsation dampening equipment to mitigate these While the basic design and low pulsation advantages of a quintuplex pump have been known for years, the Ellis-Williams quintuplex pumps are the only quintuplex pumps in the industry that offer internal herringbone gear reductions and full roller-bearing construction throughout, just like the proven triplex pump.
