Samaritan Breast Center
at Good Sam
The Samaritan Breast Center at Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) is completely focused on detecting and treating
breast cancer. With advanced imaging technology and a highly skilled staff, our patients can be confident they’re
receiving the best treatment possible in the Dayton area.
Expert Staff
The expert staff at the Samaritan Breast Center provides high-quality, consistent results and caring services to our
patients.
Radiologist Dr. Diane H. Anderson and surgeon Dr. Thomas A. Heck serve as our Co-Medical Directors. They are
dedicated to providing advanced breast cancer detection through the latest diagnostic imaging technology available.
Both physicians maintain offices onsite. Dr. Anderson and Dr. Heck being Co-Medical Directors is a great advantage
because they provide both the diagnostic perspective of an expert radiologist and the clinical perspective of an expert
breast surgeon.
Our full-time Breast Care Coordinator helps patients who have mammogram results that may indicate cancer. After
patients receive their diagnosis, the Breast Care Coordinator provides education, support, and resources, and she
helps them coordinate their care. She helps patients build trust and confidence in their care program and helps ensure
continuity of care. If an inpatient stay is needed, the Breast Care Coordinator helps the patient coordinate with GSH’s
Cancer Center.
Advanced Technology
Digital imaging allows the Samaritan Breast Center to provide advanced diagnosis. We use computer-aided detection
(CAD) technology to scan the images and mark any suspicious-looking areas. These areas are then studied in more
detail by the radiologist, who can determine if further evaluation is needed. The R2 Image checker increases the
accuracy of early-stage cancer diagnosis to 98 percent.
Coordinated Care
The Samaritan Breast Center is dedicated to detecting and treating breast cancer. Because the Cancer Center and
the Outpatient Surgery Center are in the same building, we can provide comprehensive screening, diagnostic, and
treatment procedures at one location, making the process simple and convenient for patients. Samaritan Breast
Center staff members go out of their way to coordinate care, including obtaining medical images from another
location.

The Samaritan Cancer Center has won national acclaim for its excellence in providing quality cancer care. It was one
of only 40 cancer centers in United States–and the only center in Dayton–to win the Commission on Cancer’s
Outstanding Achievement Award.

Cancer Genetics Program
Because people with hereditary susceptibility to cancer have increased risk for early-onset disease and multiple
cancers, specific guidelines for cancer management and cancer prevention have been developed for affected families.
When a precise genetic mutation is identified, at-risk family members can be counseled, tested, and offered increased
surveillance and cancer prevention options.
Radiation Oncology Services
Samaritan Cancer Center radiation oncologists use the latest technologies to administer radiation therapy safely and
effectively. In many cases, using IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy), tumors are precisely targeted, sparing
healthy tissue from radiation, reducing side effects, and increasing cure rates. Samaritan Cancer Center is a leader in
prostate brachytherapy, using both iodine and palladium seed implants. Seed implants are available to newly
diagnosed patients and to some prostate cancer patients who have received external beam radiation therapy and
need additional treatment.
Medical Oncology/Infusion Services
Infusion services are delivered in an environment created for easy access and comfort. Infusions are administered by
nurses who are certified in oncology and experienced in providing the highest quality of patient care and education.
Patients can receive chemotherapy, blood transfusions, injections, and other needed intravenous fluids in this
outpatient setting.
Breast Cancer Program
The Samaritan Cancer Centers’ Breast Cancer Program is the first in the nation to receive certification by the joint
Commission. The program is based on the belief that a team approach and good communication among providers
and with the patient are critical to successful diagnosis and treatment. The program works collaboratively with the
Samaritan Breast Center, which provides the latest technology in a state-of-the-art facility.
The Cancer Center’s team of breast cancer specialists, who meet weekly to discuss all newly diagnosed cases,
includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, a radiologist, and a pathologist, as well as the breast
care coordinator, a mammography technician, the clinical trials nurse, and the cancer data specialist.

The Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Neurosciences program focuses on the continuity of care for acute illness or
injury involving the nervous system, and for long-term chronic care. Our approach to care is based on a “less is more”
philosophy designed to spare patients from unnecessary invasive treatment whenever possible.
The Neurosciences program at Good Samaritan Hospital provides a multidisciplinary approach to treating and
managing disease or injury involving the nervous system. This includes diseases that affect the brain, spinal cord, and
peripheral nerves.
Certified Primary Stroke Center
Good Samaritan Hospital is certified as primary stroke center by The Joint Commission. Certification recognizes

Orthopedics at Good Sam
The Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Joint Replacement Center in Dayton has earned a national reputation for highquality orthopedic care, particularly in the most complicated cases. We offer the most up-to-date and longer-lasting hip
and knee replacement technologies. We also do hip arthroscopy and early intervention to prevent hip arthritis.
Procedures and Expertise
Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Joint Replacement Center uses specially developed, minimally invasive techniques
and computer-assisted surgery for precise placement and faster healing. These limit the impact of surgery on your
body, so you’re on your way quicker and with less pain. Our techniques and the long-lasting replacement joints we
use are so advanced that surgeons from other hospitals come here to observe our work and learn how they can bring
these benefits to their patients. This advanced technology, combined with our expertise, leads to better outcomes,
especially in complex cases.
The top surgeons at the GSH Joint Replacement Center perform more than 100 joint replacements a year, ensuring

Sports Medicine
at Good Sam
At the Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Sports Medicine Center, we have one goal: to return athletes—whether
recreational, competitive, or those who just focus on fitness—to their full range of motion, agility, and strength. We
provide sports-specific care for Dayton athletes of all ages because we know that sports injuries require specialized
treatment
The GSH Sports Medicine Center’s 22,000-square-foot facility is equipped with current equipment. However,
technology is not the most important aspect of our program. Our staff develops a one-on-one relationship with our
patients, bringing a caring, personal touch to the treatment process that leads to more positive outcomes.
Athletic Training Services
Our certified and licensed athletic trainers are available on contract for sports events, club teams, tournaments, or
high schools. The Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Sports Medicine Center also provides services to University of
Dayton women’s sports and the Miami Valley Silverbacks professional arena football team, as well as 10 high
schools.
Sports Bracing and Orthotics
We offer a full line of orthopedic braces. Our staff will evaluate each patient’s needs and select a product that fits both
their lifestyle and their needs.
Physician Services
Sports medicine practitioners—available by appointment—provide injury evaluation, pre-participation sports physicals,
and other sports health services.
Women’s Services
at Good Sam
Good Samaritan Hospital Family Birthing Center
Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) Family Birthing Center excels at providing family-focused care for women and babies
in the Dayton area. Physicians, nurses, and certified nurse midwives collaborate based on their combined experience,
education, and core interests to help their patients.
GSH Family Birthing Center provides a broad range of services to empower women to make their own birth choices,
including:
• Experienced, highly trained, and responsive physicians, nurses and certified nurse midwives
• Labor, childbirth, and baby care classes
• Large, welcoming labor and delivery rooms, some with whirlpool tubs
• Pain management options
• Pregnancy and labor support from midwives; we can also refer to a doula (a specially trained assistant who supports
a mother during labor)
GSH Family Birthing Center also helps expectant mothers recover from pregnancy-induced illnesses, such as
hyperemesis (severe morning sickness).
GSH Family Birthing Center provides primary nursing for patients. As a family-focused area, patients may have a
reasonable number of visitors, except for during labor and delivery, when there is a limit of four visitors. One family
member is also welcome to spend the night on the convertible bed in each patient’s room.
Nurse Expertise and Experience
Every labor and delivery nurse at GSH Family Birthing Center is Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified. All
staff, including nurses, is Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified. Nurses are also trained by our Lactation
Specialists to teach new mothers how to breastfeed.
Level II Special Care Nursery
If your newborn needs a little extra care after birth, he or she receives it from the experienced, qualified nursing staff
and physicians at GSH Family Birthing Center.
Certified Nurse Midwives
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) at GSH Family Birthing Center are trained to perform low-risk vaginal deliveries for
healthy pregnant women. Like a physician, they work with the women from the beginning of the pregnancy to birth and
beyond. They prepare the birth plan with the mother and family and implement that birth plan through delivery and
after, if possible.
