bladders and smelly feet are the most embarrassing
topics for British and European men to discuss with their
doctors. The survey of 3500 men, commissioned by
Japanese pharmaceutical firm Yamanouchi, also reveals
that talking about weight gain, hair loss and skin
conditions are other topics that make men uneasy.
Can you really die of a broken heart?
A new study at the Baker Institute of Medical
Research in Melbourne is looking for an
answer. Researchers are examining how
clinical depression might cause physical
changes in blood vessels that can lead to
heart attacks, and whether antidepressants
such as Prozac and Zoloft can prevent a
heart attack. The researchers suspect that
increased sympathetic nervous activity is the
mechanism by which depression increases
the risk of heart attacks. The study will firstly
examine whether depressed patients have
increased sympathetic nervous activity to
the heart and, secondly, see if it is possible to
modify that increased activity with a class of
antidepressants known as specific serotonin
re-uptake inhibitors. The researchers are
seeking volunteers aged 18 to 75 with no
history of heart disease or diabetes who are
depressed but not currently taking
antidepressants. Volunteers can call

Q
I have recently been
diagnosed with Lupus
Erythematosus (LE) (not
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus).
I have seen articles about SLE but
none regarding LE. Can you please
inform me of causes, remedies and
research being undertaken on this
condition.
Barry, Morphett Vale
Brian Sando, GP, responds
Lupus Erythematosus (LE) is the same
condition as Systemic Lupus
Erythematosus (SLE). The cause of the
condition is not known, but it is
suggested an abnormal immune
response, genetic factors and a viral
infection interact to produce the
disease. Symptoms include joint inflammation and skin rashes, and the nervous
system, blood vessels and kidneys may
also be affected. Unfortunately there is
no cure for SLE, and it can flare from
time to time and then go into remission.
Depending on its severity and the
symptoms involved, treatment varies
and includes taking aspirin and other
inflammmatory medication,
glucocorticosteroids (cortisone-like
drugs) and sometimes anti-malarials.
Although SLE is a chronic disease and
can be serious, with current therapies
many patients lead relatively normal
lives. Various specialist groups are continuing to research the condition.
Q
I suffer from dandruff.
What causes it and what
can I do to stop it?
Max, Glenelg
Barry Wilmot, pharmacist, replies
Dandruff is an annoying condition
characterised by an itchy or flaky scalp.
Although it is not known for sure what
causes dandruff and its 'cousin', seborrheic dermatitis, research suggests they
may be an inflammatory reaction
triggered by too much of the microscopic yeast-like organism normally
found in small amounts on healthy
scalps. The incidence and severity
ofdandruff and seborrheic
dermatitis seem to be affected by
genetic factors; allergies to hair care
products; cold weather and dry indoor
heat; infrequent shampooing; and stress
(physical or emotional). Common
dandruff is an overproduction and build
up of dead skin cells, appearing as
white flakes. Symptoms of seborrheic
dermatitis usually include an itchy, red
scalp and yellow greasy flakes. In
addition, red scaly patches may
appear around the hairline, eyebrows,
ears, nose and mouth. An anti-fungal
cream will clear up those problem
spots. The first step in treating dandruff
and seborrheic dermatitis is frequent
shampooing. This washes away flakes
before they can build up and helps
soothe an itchy scalp. Try a medicated
shampoo and if problems persist, please
contact your doctor.
Q
This question may seem
strange to a lot of people –
and it might annoy a few as
well! But I just cannot seem to put on
weight. How do you suggest I can
put on weight sensibly? Susan, by
email
Karen Kingham, nutritionist, replies
Many people don’t realise it can be as
big a battle to put weight on as to take
it off. What’s more there is often little
sympathy to be had for those struggling
to gain extra kilos when almost
everyone else is trying to get rid of
them. Gaining weight can be likened to
weight loss in reverse. The desired effect
– weight gain – can be achieved by
eating more kilojoules. The sensible
approach to gaining weight begins
with regular meals and snacks. Making
sure you eat frequently will help to
increase the amount you eat and in
turn increase the kilojoules you
consume. Eating more is not the only
consideration in gaining weight.
Maximising the nutrient density of your
food is also important. Choose meals
and snacks that team fat or protein with
lots of vitamins and minerals such as in
a fruit smoothie, dried fruit and nut mix
or a lean steak and steamed
vegetables with a drizzle of olive oil.

Younger children
appear to be more at
risk, as their books

recommend investing
in a good-quality,
well-fitted backpack.
Ensure all straps are fastened and
tightened, and that the heaviest items
are placed in pockets as close to the
body as possible. The maximum load
should not exceed six per cent of the
child’s body weight (3.5kg for a 54kg
child). Encourage your child to
undertake a few back, neck and
shoulder stretches before and after
carrying the backpack. You should also
consider discussing the matter with
teachers, so that some planning goes
into how many books the child has to
carry home from school each day. If
your child continues to complain of
back and neck pain, make an appointment with a physiotherapist who will
provide specific stretches and strengthening exercises to overcome the
problem, and don’t forget to take the
backpack along with you.

I am having trouble sleeping
lately. My doctor suggested
sleeping tablets, but I was
wondering if there is anything natural
that I can try first? Max Barnes, by
email
Karen Martin, naturopath, responds
I believe you should try some techniques that don’t involve ingesting
anything before you take herbal
remedies. First of all, avoid coffee and
other sources of caffeine in the
evenings. Many people have trouble
sleeping because they are mentally but
not physically tired, so regular exercise
can help. There are also relaxation
techniques, such as visualisation and
meditation, which can help. Lavender is
great for inducing sleep. Try a few drops
of lavender oil on a handkerchief
placed under your pillow, or one of
those old-fashioned lavender sachets. A
number of herbs are useful for inducing
sleep. Try a cup of chamomile tea half
an hour before you go to bed. Skullcap
(a native American herb) and passiflora
(the flower from the passionfruit vine)
are stronger than chamomile and can
be taken as capsules or tablets (seek
your naturopath’s advice on these
herbs). Valerian tablets are also popular,
but bear in mind that it doesn’t suit
everyone – a small number of people
may suffer from nightmares from taking
valerian before bed.

Sunlight is also a rich source of vitamin D,
which is essential for the uptake of calcium
into the bones. A deficiency of calcium can
cause brittle bones, which can lead to osteoporosis – one of the biggest problems facing the Australian health care system as the

important role in improving skin conditions

autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, as well as other conditions such
as herpes and cystitis.

tress has always been with us. The
many of us choose to self-medicate our
stressed-out states with food. Too often, however, we turn to foods that can actually
exacerbate stress.
Nutritionist Karen Kingham says that we
don’t often pay a lot of attention to diet
when we’re stressed, and that can actually
make it worse. “When you’re stressed, it’s
important to eat regular, well-balanced
meals. And that includes snacks,” she says.
That doesn’t mean every meal needs to
be three courses. Kingham simply advises
staying away from high-fat foods, which
don’t stick with you.
Caffeine is another culprit in the stress
cycle. “Caffeine revs you up and you end up
irritable and can’t sleep,” says Kingham.
“You might have a couple of cups of
coffee a day and think that’s not bad. But
when you then add a chocolate bar, a
cola drink, and an energy drink, you’re
suddenly way over the limit.”
Kingham says that people who are
stressed burn a lot of energy. So it’s
important to choose foods that increase
energy levels. But she warns against quick-fix
sugar solutions. “They’re just quick fixes, so
you often get a high that’s followed by a
rebound low,” she says.
Foods with good staying power include
popcorn (air-popped), pears, dried fruits (or
raisin bread), pasta, porridge, baked beans
and yogurt. “They’re a much better alternative to a soft drink or sweets, especially those
containing caffeine.”

to eat until tea, which can sometimes be
seven or eight o’clock.
What do you love to eat and drink?
I love cooking and so does my husband.
There’s nothing I don’t like eating, except
chocolate and some sweet foods. My palate is quite dry. I drink lots of wines –
my favourites are Coonawara cabernet and
McLaren Vale shiraz, and I also enjoy champagne. We drink every day of the week, but
not very much. We have a glass of wine with
our meal, because it’s an integral part of it.
Every January – and I have done this for
quite some time – I stop drinking for a month
to get my body into shape for the February
vintage.
Do you use any complementary medicine?
Occasionally I take a vitamin B supplement,
but not as often as I should.
How do you cope with stress?
Reasonably well. I tend to take my work
stress out on my husband! Running helps me
to relax, and so does being at home with
Eloise.
How difficult is it combining motherhood
with running a winery?
It’s a huge juggling act, and I am very lucky

How do you keep fit now?
It’s very different now because I am working

because I have to travel a lot, but I usually
take Eloise with me.
What do you prefer – country or
city living?
Country life is fantastic for families. I very
much enjoy living in the Coonawarra, but I
like to go to the city now and then. But I
wouldn’t like to live there now.
What do you like to do in your
spare time?
Wine is pretty much all consuming, but I do
like my sport. I am very interested in rugby
union and watching the Wallabies.
Why are you a member of National
Pharmacies?
I joined National Pharmacies about six
months ago, after a friend recommended it.
I use the stores when I travel into the city.
