Couple gets hitched in farm store
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
While a rare, New Year’s Eve blue
moon peaked through the clouds, its
light reflecting off the tin roof of Alvord Farm Supply, Roy King and Lori
McCurry exchanged vows in front of
friends and family.
On a day marked with rarities, Roy
tied the knot for the first time in his 61
years in the feed store he has owned
since 1991.
“They’ve never had a wedding in
here, and this place has been here
since 1964,” King said with a smile on
Wednesday, less than a week after the
couple married.
While Lori looked through pictures
and talked of their wedding day that
afternoon, Roy received a heavy dose of
ribbing from longtime customers who
have become friends. Roy laughed with
them, and Lori held her own, one-upping Roy’s friends and laughing along.
For many of his friends, the wedding
came as a surprise.
After two previous engagements, Roy
had yet to make it to the altar until met
there by Lori. Lori realized marriage
was a big step for Roy, and eventually,
a plan for a casual wedding in the place
that Roy was most comfortable came
together.
“He only takes off three days a year
– Thanksgiving, Christmas and New
Year’s. Other than that, he’s only missed
three days of work since he’s owned
this place. He’s here from 8 a.m. until
7:30 p.m.,” Lori said. “I asked him if he
would feel better if I just showed up (at
the store) with a preacher. I knew that’s
where he would be.”
The couple picked up a marriage license Monday, Dec. 28, and scheduled
their wedding for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec.
31 – just three hours after the 72-hour

After completing an investigation into the cause of the
Dec. 19 fire that destroyed
nine townhouses, Runaway
Bay Fire Marshal Brian Bernardo believes the fire started in a fireplace.
“It appears the cause is accidental,” he said. “It had to
do with the fireplace in one
of the units.”
The finding is in line with
numerous witness reports,
both from residents of the
former townhomes and first
responders.
The fire started due to
some fault with the chimney.
The wooden units were built
in the early 1960s. They had
metal fireplaces and chimneys.
Investigators
sifted
through the charred remains
and interviewed witnesses
during the investigation.

LOVE LOCKS — For seven years, Brandon Webb grew his hair out to give to his niece Hannah Cox who suffers from
alopecia areata, a rare hair loss disease. On Thursday, Martha Montejano at The Hair Shop lopped off Webb’s locks.
The hair will be crafted into a custom wig for Hannah.

has had 100 percent hair loss, no
eyebrows, nothing. At other times
she has just had bald patches.”
The condition is very rare. It only
affects roughly 0.1 percent of people.
And only about 1 to 2 percent of
those diagnosed with alopecia suffer
from the total hair loss that sometimes affects Hannah.
Ever since Hannah was diagnosed
with alopecia, Webb began letting
his freak flag fly.
Brandon Webb
“I was always growing it out for
Hannah,” he said. “I’ve reminded her
of it every year. I’m excited to be giving it to her.”
On Thursday, Webb sat down in
Martha Montejano’s chair in The Hair Shop in Bridgeport. A few snips later, Montejano was holding a 21-inch

On Tuesday night, the

passage of a juvenile curfew by a vote of 3-1. Council

The law states that anyone under the age of 17 is

any establishment” within
city limits from 11 p.m. to 6

A lot of people tend to volunteer
time, energy, money, clothes and
food.
But one young man from Lake
Bridgeport chose to donate something he’s a little more attached to.
For seven years, since he was in the
ninth grade, Brandon Webb, 22, has
gone without a haircut.
“I took a lot of grief for this in high
school,” Webb said. “It was always too
long or too short.”
But all those years he was growing
it out for a reason. His niece, Hannah
Cox, 7, suffers from alopecia areata.
It is a rare genetic disease that causes baldness to the
scalp and sometimes the entire body.
“She’s had this condition since she was born,” said Samantha Strickland, Hannah’s stepmother. “At times she

“You know how much I love you, Hannah?” Webb said.
“I love you this much,” he said while
stretching out the freshly harvested hair
to its full length. Hannah gave a sweet,
shy smile.
Hannah is a first grader at Bridgeport
Elementary. She has received some wigs
from the nonprofit organization Locks of
Love in the past, but this will be the first
time she will get a custom-made wig.
“This will be a first-time experience for
her,” Strickland said. “She’s gotten tired
of the wigs we’ve gotten her before. This
one will be custom made and fitted to her
head.”
When asked if he’s going to keep his new,
clean-cut look, Webb replied, “I’m gonna
turn right back around and do it again.”
Montejano, who regularly gives back to
the community, volunteered her styling
abilities. And Brandi’s Country Kitchen
gave the family a free lunch prior to the
haircut.

Rieger resigns from P&Z commission
Tim Rieger has resigned from
the Decatur Planning and Zoning
Commission. Rieger, who serves as
chairman, said his work schedule
has made it difficult for him to attend meetings.
He has served on the commission
about 10 years.
City Manager Brett Shannon
said once the city council appoints
a replacement, the commission
will select a new chairman. Until
then, Vice Chairman Jerry Watson
assumes the chairman’s duties.
The council will consider appointing Lisa Estrada to fill the
vacancy Monday, along with reappointments of Donald Willis and
Terry Berube.
In its only business item Tuesday, the P&Z approved the final
plat for the Taco Casa addition,
which is the location of the Golden
Wok restaurant on Business 380.

specifically the section that
exempts a minor if they

“I think this section violates the right to assemble,”
Towler said. “That’s the reason this ordinance should

that, it is a good ordinance.”

Minors “are particularly
susceptible due to their lack
of maturity and experience
to become involved in unlawful and gang-related activities and to be victims of
older perpetrators of crime,”
the ordinance reads.
Police Chief Harry Lamance wanted the council to
pass the ordinance but not
because his department has
had problems with the city’s
youth.
“It’s not a problem, just
insurance,” Lamance said.
“These kids have been
good.”
Mayor Brent Wilson said
the ordinance is just another tool for the police department. He also said he trusts
Lamance and the city’s police department in executing the law.
“I think Harry has the
ability to work very well
with young people,” Wilson
said. “We’ve tried hard to
keep our department up-todate with new equipment
and technology and the ordinances they need to do their
job.”
The ordinance does list
several exceptions for minors, including when in the

“I think Mr. Towler has
some valid points,” Wilson
said. “But I’m confident our
police department will use

The city attorney also approved of the verbiage and
constitutionality of the ordinance.
The council approved the
ordinance in the past, but
it had expired after three
years.

Officers honored
The city of Boyd honored
two police officers for their
efforts in apprehending four
men accused of burglarizing
as many as 13 area churches and stealing more than
$13,000 in cash and goods.
Officer Vince Estel and
Sgt. Jason Cobb were canvassing
local
churches
during the early hours of
Dec. 28 after an alarm had
sounded at the Hilltop Assembly of God Church just
outside town.
Estel soon found four men
standing behind the Boyd
First Baptist Church next to
a vehicle matching the suspects’ vehicle description.
When he approached them,
one fled but was captured
moments later by Cobb.
“I was there that morning,”
said Lane Akin, enforcement
captain for the Wise County
Sheriff’s Department. “It
was a dangerous situation.
More churches would have
been burglarized if not for
these two men.”
“They exhibited exceptional action and put a stop to a
string of criminal activities,”
Wilson said. “They should
be commended.”
The officers were given
plaques by the city for their
efforts in the arrests.

Chimney blamed for townhouse fire ...
Continued from page 1A
gation.
Bernardo said it could be
one of several things that
sparked the fire. A metal
fitting in the chimney could
have been slightly out of
alignment, which allowed
sparks to drift into the attic.
A pinprick hole caused by
rust could have also started
it. Or, it might have been
clogged and a hot spot was
created. Due to the destroyed
remains, it’s hard for investigators to know for certain.
The building also contained no firewalls between
units and the insulation was
flammable. They also had a
shared attic.
“It was old wood construction,” Bernardo said. “It
doesn’t meet the fire codes of
today.”
Such units are basically
grandfathered in. It’s up to
individual owners to upgrade their homes to current codes. Bernardo said it
is similar to someone driving
a 1965 Mustang. It’s legal,
but it obviously doesn’t meet
the standards of today’s vehicles.
“As time goes by, this stuff
gets weeded out, unfortu-
nately by fire a lot of the
times,” Bernardo said.
He advised that anybody
planning to build a fire in
their home get their chimney routinely checked and
cleaned. The build-up of fire
residue or a bird or squirrel’s
nest can cause hot spots that
can quickly cause a structure
fire.
The fire displaced 27 residents. Although most lost
everything they owned, the
community has tried to help
the victims rebuild their
lives.
“Whenever there is a crisis,
it brings out the best in peo-
ple,” Bernardo said. “These
kinds of tragedies bring out
the best in Americans, and
especially in Texans. By and
large, people in Wise County
step up and give when people
need help.”
A benefit dinner for those
displaced is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at The Club
at Runaway Bay. Everyone
who donates will receive a
free chili and cornbread dinner. Gospel artist John Webster of Azle will perform.

OPINION
OUR VIEWS
Schools should recognize safety errors
By BRIAN KNOX
Two local school districts had
distinctly different, yet serious,
issues to deal with this past week.
But one thing they both had in
common was a failure to communicate.
In one case, it was failure to
communicate with parents and
law enforcement. In the other,
it was a failure to communicate
with fire officials.
What is concerning is that both
issues deal with something of
major concern to both parents and
educators: student safety.
On Monday, a Boyd Intermediate School student brought a gun
to school, and on Tuesday, Decatur Middle School used a heating
method that could have put the
health of students in jeopardy.
In the case of the gun on the
school campus, it sounds like
the gun was not loaded, and no
student was ever in danger. Even
if that is the case, the school
should have known that people in
the community would hear about
the incident “through the grapevine,” which they did. We all know
how that goes. Not everything
heard that way is correct. Parents
were rightly concerned, and they
deserved to hear the details from
the school.
They didn’t, at least
until two days after the
incident. And police were
not notified until nearly a
full day after the gun was
confiscated.
Acting on a tip to the
news department, we did
our own investigating.
When we talked to Boyd
Police Chief Harry Lamance during the early
afternoon hours Tuesday, he said
the school had not contacted him
about the incident although he,
like many, had “heard” about an
incident at the school the day
before.
After a few more calls, a campus administrator confirmed that
a gun was brought to the campus
by a fifth-grade student.
Many parents were upset that
they read about the incident
in our paper or on our Web site
before they heard anything from
the school. The district may have
wanted to complete their investigation before releasing any
information, but parents should
still have been notified of the
basic information – primarily
that a gun was brought
to school and the school
was investigating the incident. And police should
have been notified on
Monday, the day the gun
was confiscated.
In the case of the
heating issue at Decatur
Middle School, school
officials were trying to do
KNOX the right thing in getting
heat into the building so
students could be comfortable in
class. Unfortunately, the method
they chose not only was a violation of the fire code, it was potentially dangerous for students.
Decatur Fire Marshal Deroy
Bennett received an anonymous
call Tuesday afternoon regarding
the situation. The caller asked if
using a kerosene heater to heat
a school building is a violation of
the fire code.
It is.
Section 603.4 of the International Fire Code states that “portable unvented fuel-fired heating
equipment shall be prohibited in
... educational facilities.”
The caller told Bennett to go
the middle school. He did, and
he discovered that the school’s
second boiler had quit working
(the school was already without
one boiler that didn’t get installed
over the Christmas break). Bennett found that, indeed, kerosene
heaters were being used to heat
the boiler room, and the heated
air was being pumped through
the ventilation system.
The problem with the heating
method is that it releases carbon
monoxide, an odorless, colorless,
toxic gas.
“I don’t want the kids to freeze,
but I can’t allow an odorless gas
into the building,” Bennett said.
He ordered school officials
remove the heaters immediately,
which they did.
I happened to receive an e-mail
early Thursday morning from the
American Industrial Hygiene Association titled, “Carbon Monoxide
– The Silent, Cold Weather Killer.”
It provided much information
about the gas, but the sentence
that caught my eye was, “Using kerosene heaters or charcoal
grills indoors or running a car in
a garage can cause levels high
enough to result in CO poisoning.”
School officials should have
known this, and if they did
and thought the risk was still
minimal, a call should have been
placed to the fire marshal to
verify that.
Luckily, we have not heard any
reports of students becoming ill.
But what would have happened if
the heating method was allowed
to continue through the rest of
the week as temperatures began
to drop even further?
We’re not the only ones who are
wondering.
“An investigation is going on
as to what was introduced to the
children,” Bennett said.
Schools rightly make student
safety a priority, but they need to
recognize when errors are made.
“We need to make sure this
doesn’t happen again,” Bennett
said.
We couldn’t have said it better
ourselves.

Healthcare plan
rings of socialism
Well voters, Americans, our president and the
United States Congress have given us a Christmas
present. Not one that keeps on giving, but keeps on
taking.
We are now one step closer to socialism. Another
step in which the government controls our freedom.
Think about this, “what’s next?” America has now
taken a great step backward. People, this president
is a socialist and so are his cronies in Congress. We
better wake up and vote these socialists/communists
out while we still can.
I’m not looking forward to my senior years knowing
that Obama has control when I go to the doctor and
the treatment I will get or not get. Social medicine is
not the answer. Just ask the dying seniors in Canada.

Filing deadline passes – and Hispanics step up
By DAVE MCNEELY
Two things were obvious when
Linda Chavez-Thompson stepped
up to a podium at Texas Democratic Party headquarters in Austin Monday and pointed out two
things she didn’t need to.
She’s Hispanic. And she’s short.
It was just hours before the
filing deadline to be on the Democratic Party’s ballot on March
2. And the diminutive ChavezThompson, a former executive
vice-president of the AFL-CIO
and member of the Democratic
National Committee, was there to
declare her candidacy for lieutenant governor.
She was the last of three candidates to pay the $3,750 filing
fee for the party’s nomination for
the job now held by Republican
David Dewhurst. The other two
are former Travis County District
Attorney Ronnie Earle and Austin
restaurateur Marc Katz.
Dewhurst, a multimillionaire
who as lieutenant governor has
been the Texas Senate’s presiding
officer since 2003, was unopposed
for re-nomination in the Republican primary.
Chavez-Thompson, born near
Lubbock 65 years ago, said her
family was so poor that she had to
drop out of school to pick cotton to
help her sharecropper father. She
never finished high school, much
less attended college, though is
outgoing and articulate.
“I know I’ll be an underdog
against a lieutenant governor
who’s a comfortable millionaire,
but most Texans aren’t millionaires either, and it’s time they had
a voice in our state capitol,” she
said. She’ll count on her grassroots
organizing efforts in labor and
political circles to move her campaign, Chavez-Thompson said.
Most other statewide Republican non-judicial incumbents also
are unopposed in the primary,
including Atty. Gen. Greg Abbott,
Comptroller Susan Combs, Land
Commissioner Jerry Patterson,
and Agriculture Commissioner
Todd Staples.
One exception is Gov. Rick Perry,
who’s opposed by U.S. Sen. Kay
Bailey Hutchison and Wharton
businesswoman Debra Medina.
The other is Railroad Commissioner Victor Carrillo, opposed by
Giddings accountant David Porter,
who also filed on Monday.
Porter was the treasurer in
2006 of a political action commit-
tee largely funded by San Antonio
multimillionaire voucher supporter James Leininger, which
backed primary opponents of some
Republican legislators.
All the Republican incumbents
except Combs will face Democratic
opposition in November. Former
U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson of Houston and Beaumont, who considered
the comptroller’s race, decided at
the last minute not to run.
One politician from days gone
by who made a surprise declaration was former State Sen. Hector Uribe for land commissioner.
Uribe represented Brownsville in
the House and then the Senate
but was beaten for the Democratic
nomination in the 1990 primary by
Sen. Eddie Lucio of Brownsville.
Uribe has lived in Austin since he
left the Senate.
The articulate and dapper Uribe,
a lawyer and actor who has had
screen roles in “The Alamo” and
“No Country for Old Men,” already
has one statewide race under
his belt. He was the Democratic
nominee for railroad commissioner
in 1996, but lost to incumbent
Republican Carole Rylander - now
Carole Keeton Strayhorn.
Strayhorn, elected comptroller in
1998, left the Republican Party to
run as an independent for governor in 2006. She lost, and then
lost a comeback race to be Austin’s
mayor. She reportedly considered
seeking the Democratic nomination for comptroller this year, but
didn’t file.
Uribe will face Bill Burton of
Athens in the Democratic primary.

waiting period.
“We invited whoever we
ran into in the next few days,”
Lori said. “It wasn’t going to
be anything fancy.”
Word of the wedding spread
quickly, leading to a bigger
crowd than expected for the
wedding. Seventy people
showed up at the store, and
the back room was transformed into a make-shift
chapel, with guests sitting on
bags of feed on each side of an
aisle.
“We didn’t know if there
would be two people here,”
Lori said. “It was great to see
so many people.”
Just before 6 on their wedding day, Roy changed from
his daily uniform of overalls
into jeans, boots and a cowboy
hat. Lori wore a black dress
and carried a bouquet of red
roses given by a friend.
Without a recording of the
wedding march, guests happily hummed the tune as Lori
walked down the aisle.
After the wedding, Lori and
Roy exchanged bites of wedding cake, also provided by a
friend.
“My son brought his iPod
and we listened to music,”
Lori said. “We danced a little.”
Looking back on the day,
the couple smile and are
thankful to the many people
who came to support them.
And while Roy jokes of the
long road that led to marriage, he’s telling the truth
when he said, “But we’re real
happy.”

Speaking of his journey to

the years, he’s heard the
positives as well as the complaints of marriage from his
buddies who come to daily
domino games at the store.
But after four years of dating,
Lori changed his mind about
the institution.
“I’ve never been married,
and she was the woman I
wanted to marry,” he said.
“We’re in love.”
Lori smiled, and looked at
Roy’s friends.
“Aw – he’s gotten a lot
sweeter since we got married,” she said.

Fire destroys building
A Tuesday night fire off of
County Road 3838 near Balsora was caused by an electrical failure, said Marc Dodd,
Wise County fire marshal. An
unoccupied, double-wide mobile home was fully involved
at the arrival of Boonsville/
Balsora and Bridgeport fire
departments. The home was
being used for storage.
Dodd reminds those using
space heaters to be cautious,
being sure to place them at
least 3 feet away from any
combustibles and away from
children and pets.
“You should not leave them
unattended, and you should
not leave children or animals in a room with an open
flame,” Dodd said. “What’s
astonishing is half of the
children under 5 that die in
fires start the fire they die
in. Normally, the way it happens is they get their clothing or blanket caught in a
space heater, a fireplace or a
candle.”
Also, Dodd recommends
homes heated with gas appliances have a working carbon
monoxide detector.

Filing deadline ...

In the governor’s race,
whoever wins the GOP
nomination will face the victor among seven candidates
seeking the Democratic
nomination. The most recent
candidates to file were San
Antonio physician Alma L.
Aguado, Harlingen rancherbuilder Star Locke and
Clement Glenn, an associate
professor from Navasota.
Already in the race were
Houston Mayor Bill White,
Houston haircare multimillionaire Farouk Shami,
private investigator Bill
Dear of Mount Calm and
Fort Worth teacher Felix
Alvarado.
White, whose decision to
run for governor instead of
the U.S. Senate was welcomed by many Democrats,
is expected to be the person
to beat – though with seven
candidates, it may be difficult to get a majority vote to
avoid an April 13 runoff.
No Democrat has won
statewide since 1994. But
White, a former chair of the
Texas Democratic Party in
the 1990s, said he’s encouraged by the fact a third of
voters are Independents,
and Perry got just 39 percent in his 2006 re-election.
Perry has been relentlessly beating the drum
about everything in Washington, where Hutchison has
worked for the last 16 years,
is bad. White says he doesn’t
think that will determine
the contest in November.
“I don’t think this race is
going to be about one party
or who said what to whom
in Washington,” White told
the Houston Chronicle. “It’s
going to be about where we
want to go with public education, cutting the dropout
rate, reducing barriers to
higher education, plans for
long-term mobility funding for our state, insurance
rates that have skyrocketed
along with our utility bills.”

Lessons Learned. Natural man has a tendency to make
decisions based on what he thinks is right (Proverbs 14:12).
Where did this type of thinking start? God gave man the first recorded commandment: “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the
garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
thou shalt not eat of it…” (Gen 2:16,17). Adam and Eve completely disregarded
the truth and went along with their own thinking. Due to the error of man, in
the Garden of Eden, the death sentence was passed on to all of mankind (1st
Corth. 15:22). So don’t blame God for death, blame Adam. Do you realize we all
have the same chance at everlasting life as Adam and Eve had? There is some
forbidden fruit out there that we are commanded to stay away from. This forbidden fruit is anything taught contrary to the word of God. Just as mother Eve was
deceived, there is deception going on today. We are to heed this commandment:
“Let no man deceive you by any means…” (2nd Thes 2:3). Remember, when
Eve was deceived into taking the forbidden fruit she; “saw the tree was good for
food…pleasant to the eyes”. To keep from being deceived, we are instructed to:
“Keep thee far from a false matter” (Ex23:7). “Prove all things”(1st Thes 5:21).
Study to show thyself approved”(2nd Tim 2:15). There is no excuse for being
deceived. God means what he says. Jesus says: “Blessed are the meek: for they
shall inherit the earth” (Math: 5:5). Jesus called himself a man. What have you
been taught? Don’t be deceived.

Eagles hold
off Indians
By RICHARD GREENE
The Decatur Eagles went
the entire fourth quarter
Tuesday night without hitting a field goal but still managed to hold off the Sanger
Indians in non-district basketball.
The Decatur varsity hit 12
of its 14 free throws in the
fourth quarter to sidetrack
Sanger for a 49-48 victory at
Decatur High School Gym.
Decatur point guard Ross
Walker led the Decatur parade to the foul line in the
last quarter, connecting on
five of six attempts. Walker
finished with nine points.
“The last thing we did
at practice was shoot free
throws and it rolled over to
the game this time,” Walker
said.
Decatur was 0-for-4 from
the field in the final frame,
while trying to protect the
three-point lead, 37-34, at the
end of three quarters. Decatur coach Roger Brown said
the Eagles were focused on
trying to work the ball inside
and got out of rhythm.
“We got one dimensional,”
Brown said. “We got so one
dimensional trying to punch
the ball inside that it got us
out of our game. But our defensive rebounding and freethrow shooting down the
stretch was good enough to
get us through to beat a good
team.”
Decatur tried to utilize a
size advantage in the middle
with forwards Nick Linder
and Caleb Hogan. Linder
finished with six points and
12 rebounds. He had eight
boards on the defensive end.
Hogan added 14 points.
“We had an advantage on
the inside and that was what
we focused on,” Walker said.
Sanger erased the deficit at the start of the fourth
quarter and took a two-point
lead, 41-39, with 4:08 left on
a pair of free throws by Tyler
Smith. The teams traded the
lead with Sanger taking a 4442 lead on a three-point play
by John Johnson with 2:32
left.
The
quick, dangerous
Johnson finished with 16
points, hitting seven of his
nine shots.
“He is a monster – a special
player,” Brown said.
Decatur worked its way to
the free-throw line on consecutive trips down the floor
to get the lead back on a pair
of free shots by Walker. After
forcing a turnover, Walker
put Decatur up by three, 4744, with a free throw with 24
seconds left.
Sanger closed back within
one before Linder hit a pair
of free throws with five seconds left to extend the lead to
49-46. Sanger’s attempt for a
tying 3-pointer fell short in
the closing seconds, and the
Indians had to settle for a layup at the buzzer and a onepoint loss.
Decatur struggled shooting early in the game, hitting
only four of its 17 attempts in
the first quarter. The Eagles
finished 13 of 37 from the
field.
Sanger led 13-9 at the end
of the first quarter and built
a 17-10 lead early in the second. Two 3-pointers by Austin
Lamirand began a 13-2 Decatur run over the final 5:03 of
the first half. Decatur took a
23-19 lead into halftime.
Lamirand finished with 16
points.

Because of his leadership,
Whatley rarely leaves the
floor during a game.
“I never get a break unless we’re up by 15,” Whatley
said. “I may get one break
per game.”
After helping the Yellowjackets improve from one
win to five his freshman year,
Whatley led Boyd to 16 wins
last season and a trip to the
playoffs. The team already
has 10 wins this year with 12
games left.
Whatley said the playoff
trip last year was a huge
accomplishment for the program and the core group of
players that are now in their
third year together. That
group includes his cousin, senior Tim Fleming. He hopes
another playoff trip and success are in line this year.
“We’ve all grown up together and we’re like a family,” Whatley said. “We knew
we’d be good [last year], but I
wasn’t expecting to make the
playoffs.
We had to play Krum and
they had more basketball
smarts. We didn’t know what
to expect. We hope we can
make it again and do better
this year.”

UP AND OVER — Decatur’s Mercy Staley attempts
a shot over Sanger’s Reagan Miller during the Lady
Eagles’ loss Tuesday night.
The Sanger Lady Indians sent the Decatur Lady
Eagles into District 5-3A
play on a sour note Tuesday night.
Sanger, ranked No. 24 in
the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches
Class 3A poll, forced 28 Decatur turnovers and held
the Lady Eagles to just
seven field goals during a
44-27 victory at Decatur
High School Gym.
Decatur varsity coach
Billy Garner said the nondistrict finale followed the
season’s trend, where the
offense lagged behind solid
work on the defensive end.
“We played decent defense,” Garner said. “We
just couldn’t get anything
going offensively.”
Along with the troubles
offensively, Decatur suffered injuries to Kaylea
Halford and Jordan Alker.
Halford scored four points
before leaving the game
with a knee injury in the
second quarter.
Alker aggravated a previous leg injury.
“We could be without
both [Friday against Wichita Falls Hirschi],” Garner
said.
Decatur takes an 8-9 record into the district opener.
With its work on the defensive end, Decatur stayed
within striking distance.
The Lady Eagles trailed by
eight, 31-23, with 7:20 left
in the game. Decatur could
get no closer down the
stretch, hitting just one of
its six field-goal attempts
in the final frame. Sanger
used a 5-0 run to build a
13-point lead, 36-23, with
4:37 left.
A pair of free throws
from Rachael Smyers and
a basket by Mercy Staley brought Decatur back
within 11, 38-27.
But Staley’s jumper with
3:05 left was Decatur’s last
points of the game. She finished with a team-high 13
points.
Sanger closed the game
on a 6-0 run. The explosive
Reagan Miller scored four
of the Lady Indians’ final
six. Miller led all scorers
with 17.
Decatur held Miller in
check early in the game.
Miller missed her first five
shot attempts.
Decatur took an early
lead on a 3-pointer and layup by Staley.
Miller pushed Sanger
ahead, 6-5, on her first 3pointer with 3:28 left in the
first quarter. Sanger took a
10-7 lead into the second
quarter.
Staley tied the game
at 10 early in the second
quarter with a free throw.
Miller answered with her
second 3-pointer seconds
later that started a 10-0
run for Sanger over the final 6:18 of the first half.
Staley began the second
half with 3-point play and
jumper to get the Lady Eagles within five, 20-15.
That was as close as Decatur could get as Sanger
built the lead to 10 going
into the final frame.

Chico chooses coaching finalists
Superintendent to interview three, bring choice to board Jan. 18
By RICHARD GREENE
Chico School District narrowed
the list of finalists for the athletic
director and football coach job to
three this week.
Superintendent Mike Jones
hopes to start interviewing the
three finalists this week and have
a candidate to bring to the school
board Jan. 18.
“We’re still in line for bringing
someone to the board for the 18th,”
Jones said. “I’m trying to do the interviews this week and next.”
Jones did not disclose the identi-
ty of the three or their experience.
Chico has been searching for a
new coach and athletic director
since Nov. 16 when a resignation
agreement was reached with Pete
Hart.
He spent eight seasons with the
Dragons, compiling a 12-68 varsity
football record. Chico went 0-10
this past season.
Hart had two years remaining on
his contract that would have paid
him slightly more than $76,000 per
year. The agreement paid $75,000.
Chico hired Bob Ledbetter’s
Champions Search Firm for $3,000
to lead the search for Hart’s replacement. The firm, headed by the former Southlake Carroll coach, took
in 60 resumes for the opening.
“Of that number, they talked to 12
or 13 and then came forward with
recommendations,” Jones said. “I’m
going to interview three people.”
BOYS BASKETBALL
Growing into the role
After taking lumps,
Whatley paying
teams back
By RICHARD GREENE
Junior Whatley took his bumps and bruises
as a freshman point guard for the young Boyd
Yellowjackets.
“I just got thrown in there as a freshman
at 5-5, 120 pounds,” he recalls. “It was real
tough to adapt. Everything was way faster
being a 14- or 15-year-old playing on varsity.
Most of the time coach and my dad had my
back and told me it would help me and pay
off in the end.”
Two years later, a grown-up 5-10 Whatley
is paying opponents back as the confident
leader of the Yellowjackets, who headed into
Friday’s game with Jacksboro with a 10-5
overall record and 1-1 mark in District 9-2A
play. Through 15 games, the junior is averaging 10.5 points per game, 3.8 assists and 1.4
steals.
“It feels like I’ve been playing forever,”
Whatley said. “The last two years have paid
off a lot.”
Boyd coach Oscar Hernandez remembers
throwing Whatley into the varsity fray as a
freshman to lead a team that was coming off
winning just one game the year before.
“It wasn’t bad. He needed to refine stuff,”
Hernandez said. “The biggest thing was the
speed of the game going from eighth grade to
varsity. It was so much faster and the [passing] windows were so much smaller.
“Now he is very confident. He’s worked really hard to get his shot down. He attacks the
lane and can finish more,” he pointed out.
Whatley, a standout in football, has only
been playing basketball for a few years. A former wrestler, he took up the sport at the urging of his brother while in junior high.
“He got me into basketball and taught me
how to play,” Whatley said. “Coach [Hernandez] then took me under his wing.”
Whatley quickly developed a love for the
game, spending time in the summer refining his skills at various camps. This past
summer, he attended a comprehensive point
guard camp in San Marcos.
“There were players from all over the country at the four-day camp,” Whatley said. “They
talked about being under control, having your
team’s back and putting yourself last.”
Those characteristics fit the selfless Whatley, who enjoys getting assists more than
scoring.
“On this team, we have a lot of scorers and
you can’t be selfish,” Whatley said. “My favorite part is passing the ball and finding open
teammates. I don’t care how much I score or
who does it as long as it gets done.”
Whatley has developed a nice long-range
shot on the wing, which if left open he’ll
take.
“One thing about him is he knows the perfect mix of when he needs to shoot and when
to dish,” Hernandez said.
In his third season, Hernandez is letting
Whatley control the action on the floor and
call plays.
“He’s the quarterback of this team and
makes it all go,” Hernandez said. “He knows
what teams are trying to do offensively and
defensively.”

FLOOR GENERAL — In his third season, Boyd point guard Junior Whatley has led the Yellowjackets to 10 wins in their first 15 games. The
program won just one game the year before he took over in the backcourt.
