ST. JOSEPH PARISH VISION STATEMENT
We, the members of St. Joseph Parish, are called by the
Holy Spirit to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our daily
lives. We invite all of God’s children to join us in our journey to become what we have been called to be: The Body
of Christ.
MISSION STATEMENT
We, the community of St. Joseph Parish, in Christ Jesus,
and guided by the Holy Spirit, are called to be witnesses
to the gospel and servants within the Catholic tradition.
We are called to work toward:
• creating an open, hospitable and welcoming community;
• embracing diversity, celebrating the giftedness of each
person
• committing to the spiritual growth and education of all
members; and
• serving one another and our community.

First Sunday of Advent — November 30, 2014
REFLECTION
Welcome to Advent, the beginning of another year in the
Church! How quickly time has flown this autumn! Here we
are, starting our annual preparation for Christmas, even
though the television ads for Christmas began a month
ago. How do we reconcile these two worlds? How can our
Advent spiritual preparation acknowledge and even benefit from the Christmas frenzy around us? Maybe it is the
alarm bell that we need to hear, to alert us to the coming
of our Lord.
OUR WEEKLY COLLECTION
Our Sunday offering for the weekend of November 23
was $11,523. Thank you for your generous offering. May
your love and sacrifices be greatly rewarded.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
First Sunday of Advent
Week of November 30, 2014
Theme: Active waiting.
Question for Adults: When you’re getting
ready to receive a guest, what are some things you do?
How do you apply this to receiving Christ?
Question for Children: What special things do you do to
get ready for a visitor at your house? What things can you
do like that to get ready for Jesus?
HELPING HANDS COLLECTION
There will be a second collection this weekend to support
the Helping Hands ministry. This group works throughout
the year to feed the hungry in our community. Please be
generous as we remember last weekend’s Gospel call to
serve Jesus through “the least brothers of mine.”
ADVENT BOOKS
This year’s Advent booklets are now available in the Narthex. These can be very helpful in enriching your spiritual
journey through this Advent season. Please leave a $1 donation to cover the cost of the booklets.
THANK YOU FOR FLOWERS
Thank you to the Simpson family, who donated
flowers for our Thanksgiving Day Mass. We appreciate your contribution to the beauty of our
worship space.
CHRISTMAS PROJECTS 2014
“GIVE A GIFT”
St. Joseph’s Christmas projects are beginning this weekend. Look in the narthex for
the following opportunities to help others in
the community:

request for monetary donation to help feed the hungry in
our community during Christmas. You may return your
donation in the envelope to the collection baskets during
Mass.

and cuddly stuffed animal (16-18 inches) for a resident at
VCRC (Vacaville Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center).
• Yellow Gift Tags are printed with a request for 1 package of men’s or women’s socks.
• Pink Gift Tags are printed with a request for 1 package
of girl’s underwear and socks.
• Blue Gift Tags are printed with a request for 1 package
of boy’s underwear and socks.
• The monthly Food Drive for St. Mary’s Food Locker will
take place the usual weekend - December 13 & 14.
Please return donated items to the receptacles located in
the Narthex. Deadline for return: December 13 & 14.
YOUTH GROUP THANKSGIVING

NOTRE DAME SCHOOL NEWS
RENT-A-SANTA
The Notre Dame School choir will be performing at Merriment on Main Tuesday, December
2 at 7:20 p.m.! You are welcome to join us on
Friday, December 5 for Rockin’ Christmas
from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Parish Center for a family-style Italian dinner, dancing to a live
band, entertainment, a silent auction, and surprise visit
from the North Pole. Tickets for the event are on sale in the
School Office.
Plan now to include a visit from Santa to your home celebration. The Knights of Columbus have offered their “Rent-A
-Santa” personal service program for over 25 years. They will
schedule visits to homes, classrooms, day care centers, office parties, etc. To arrange a visit or for information, please
call Ken Gallagher at 446-7720. All proceeds go toward the
KC’s charitable works.
If you are interested in teaching music to students in all
grades two days a week please contact Principal Walls
at [email protected] or call the office at 4471460. Sadly, Mrs. Gwinnup, our music teacher and choir director, will be leaving us in January.
The 11th Annual Walk for Life-WC is Saturday, January 24,
2015. The walk starts at 1:30 pm from the Civic Center Plaza
to Justin Herman Plaza on Market St. Our parish will have a
bus going down to San Francisco that will leave at 10:00 am.
The cost is $25 per adult and $15 for kids under 12. Let us join
thousands of women, men & children of goodwill in San
Francisco as we proclaim to the world that abortion hurts
women and women deserve better than abortion. Will you
stand with us as we walk this journey together? To speak for
those who cannot speak, to walk for those who cannot walk,
to pray for, fight for, stand up for and love the life of every
unborn child. For additional information, please contact My
Catacutan: Ph# (707) 332-2886 or email: [email protected], or visit Walk for Life West Coast

WALK FOR LIFE WEST COAST
MEN’S WEEKEND RETREAT
The 2014-2015 Christ the King Parish Retreat schedule has
been published. The theme for this retreat season is "Living
the Joy of the Gospel." The Men's retreats will be December
5-7 2014 and February 20-22, 2014. We invite you to take
some time for yourself to experience a Passionist Retreat that will speak to you regardless of where you are in
life. For those of you who have not been on a retreat or have
no idea about the benefits of what a retreat can do for you,
this close-to-home beautiful retreat center is a great place to
start. Please reserve your spot today by calling Carol Forrest
at 916-725-4720 Ext 314. You can also register on line
at: http://christthekingretreatcenter.org.
FLOWERS IN CHAPEL
DISCERNMENT RETREAT
Please do not leave flowers or potted plants in the chapel
or blessed sacrament room because they can damage the
carpet. Instead you may make a donation and the Floral
Ministry will furnish the flowers.
This year, the discernment retreat at St. Patrick’s Seminary
and University in Menlo Park will be held from January 1618, 2015. Participants must be a single male, 21 years or older,
and sponsored by a parish priest or the diocesan vocation
director. There is no cost to attend, and attendance does not
imply further commitment or obligation. If you are interested, please contact one of our parish priests. This retreat
may provide insight into a vocation, and assist in responding
to God’s call.
BE AWARE
Recently there have been a number of car break-ins in Vacaville. Remember to lock your car before leaving it unattended, and don’t leave objects of value inside.
