What is a Hopi Ear Candle?
An ear candle (also known as a Hopi Ear Candle) is a hollow
cylinder made from unbleached cotton or muslin which has been
coated in natural ingredients including beeswax and essential oils.
Some are made with paraffin instead of beeswax but as I am sure
you will agree, that sounds way too scary!?
These ear candles are approx 22 cms (8 3/4 ins) long.
The candle is lit and then placed in the ear - find out about how
to do the procedure and also its benefits later on in this report.
The History of Hopi Ear Candles
There is a lot of misinformation surrounding the origins of the art
of ear candling. Some people believe that the Hopi Indians in
North America started it - hence the name Hopi Ear Candles - but
this is a claim that the Hopi Indians themselves refute! Guess they
would know - right?!
So, ear candles historians have therefore traced the art right
back to about 3000BC in the time of the Ancient Egyptians. Both
transcripts and also mural paintings depicting the art of ear
candling, exist giving much credence to this claim.
Other possible origins are the Greeks, the Aztecs, the Mayans and
also the Tibetans.
Ancient cultures used ear candling not only as a therapeutic method
but also as a spiritual way to clear the mind and senses in
preperation for meditation.
Ear candles are said to have become increasingly popular, and more
widely used, following the domestication of the honeybee. This
being as a result of the majority of ear candles being coated in
beeswax. It was in fact the Ancient Egyptians who became the
first beekeepers, but the art of collecting honey from beehives
can be tracked as far back as the caveman.
It seems most civilisations have tried to stake a claim to its
beginning and yet in the modern era we live in, so many people are
against it saying that it is dangerous. In fact in Canada it is illegal
to sell ear candles.
Maybe, as with so many alternative therapies these days, the
medical profession is scared that people may prefer a more holistic
approach to healing than be reliant on them! But thats for another
day....
The Structure of the Ear
The ear is made up of 3 parts - the outer ear, the middle ear and
the inner ear. The outer ear funnels the sounds into the ear and
helps us to determine where any sound is coming from - above,
below, behind etc.
The middle ear contains the auditory canal (1 in the diagram).
The inner ear is where the magic happens! The inner ear plays
home to the cochlea (10 in the diagram) which is the piece of
equipment that takes the vibrations that have travelled along the
auditory canal and converts them into electrical impulses which it
sends to the brain.
What Benefits can Hopi Ear Candling have?
Ear Candles, despite medical opposition, have been proven to have
many benefits both medically and therapeutically. Many people use
ear candles purely for relaxation purposes. Others use them for
medical reasons and these are a few of the many benefits that
have been documented:
Improved hearing
Getting rid of strange noises in the ear
Headache relief
Release of a build up of pressure in the ear
Release of a build up of ear wax
Relief of sinus problems
Relief from tinnitus, Menieres disease and 'swimmers ear'
Better lymphatic circulation
Helps snoring problems
Relief for sufferers of glue ear, rhinitis, colds and migraines
Relieves the feelings of vertigo
Relief from neuralgia
Stress relief
I have my own experience which you may find interesting. When I
first found ear candles I decided to try them out. After all, you
cant really write about something that you have not tried, can
you?
I chose a time when I had an unusual bout of stuffiness in the
nasal area and in fact had painful sinuses. I settled down on the
bed and my wife administered the ear candle. Now, I am a big
skeptic about a lot of things until I actually experience them and
can form an honest opinion. Well, immediately after having the ear
candles I was able to breath easily and the pain subsided shortly
afterwards. I woke up the next day feeling fighting fit and have
not had a return of the blocked sinuses. I am no longer a skeptic!!
Contraindications - Reasons for NOT having an Ear Candling
session!
Now, having an ear candles treatment is extremely safe but there
are certain medical conditions which, if you have, you should NOT
proceed with an ear candling tretament.
This is not an exhaustive list but they are the main ones:
Any recent head or neck injury
Grommets in the ear
Ear infections
Perforated ear drum
High or low blood pressure
Circulation problems
Epilepsy
Eczema or psoriasis arond the ears
Neuralgia
Open wounds around the ear
Recent ear surgery
Any ear problems for which you are still under the supervision of
your doctor
Allergy to bee stings - surprising I know, but this is due to the
beeswax used in the candles.
Always take extra care to cover the hair if they use hairspray
How do Hopi Ear Candles work?
So, how do the ear candles actually work? Well, they work like a
chimney on a building, working through a process called convection.
Wikipedia gives the definition of convection as this - "The
movement caused by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense
material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the
influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat"
This process draws the impurities up through the candle to the
top.
The convection also causes a mild suction within the ear and this
coupled with the warmth from the candle and the vapours
(camomile etc), gently massages the eardrum. This gentle massage
causes any pressure build up in the head to be regulated thereby
relieving the sinuses. This also helps in other ways too...
the herbal vapours soothe the outer ear and also strengthen the
immune system
the warmth helps stimulate the blood flow strengthening the
lymph glands and thereby stimulates the energy points on the
outer ear.
The person having the treatment should experience a pleasurable
crackling or hissing noise in their ear which is just the sound of
the flame. It is very relaxing believe me!
Ear candles work best when the candle is held correctly with a
good seal around the base. This allows the vapours to travel up the
inside of the candle and not out through the bottom or into the
eardrum.
The ear candle does NOT actually remove the ear wax - this is a
misconception!
It purely loosens it and the ear wax then comes out easier and
naturally over the following days after a treatment. The residue
that is often found in the candle is therefore NOT ear wax but
purely wax from the candle.
The length of time a candle burns says a lot about the possible
extent of any problems you may have in your ear. The usual burn
time of an ear candle is between 10-15 minutes. The longer the
candle burns the worse the potential problem could be. The colour
of the smoke also has a bearing on it too. If the smoke is a dark
colour then this could indicate a problem. A good healthy sign is
when the smoke is light grey, light blue or if there is no smoke at
all.
If you feel a blocked sensation during the treatment this is usually
due to the vapours and will pass shortly after the treatment ends.
If the blocked sensation occurs afterwards this usually shows that
the candling process has caused the build up of ear wax to loosen
and this should be alleviated as the ear wax comes out naturally.
How to perform an Ear Candling session
First of all you need to check that you (or the person you are
giving the ear candle process too) are not suffering from any of
the contraindications mentioned above in this report. NEVER give
yourself an ear candle treatment. This is dangerous.
Also do NOT use ear candles on children under the age of 6 years.
Then ensure that the person is lying on their side and is
comfortable.
You will need the following items close to hand:
the candles obviously (you can get Biosun, Otosan and Indian Ear
Candles HERE )
a glass of water to extinguish the candle at the end of the
treatment
matches or a lighter to light the candle
cotton buds to wipe away any residue or wax from the ear
tissues to protect the persons skin around the ear or you can
get ear protectors which affix to the candles themselves HERE
Place the candle (with the safety mark nearest to the ear) gently
into the ear and hold it between the index and middle fingers.
Make sure that the person is comfortable. Remove the candle and
light it well away from them. Place the candle back in their ear
and ensure that they are still comfortable, holding it as described
above.
Dont forget to keep a good seal around the base of the candle to
enable the convection process to work effectively.
Allow the candle to burn down to the red safety line and then
remove it and extinguish the candle in the glass of water you have
available. NEVER allow the candle to burn down below the safety
mark.
Check the persons ear for any residue or wax and wipe away with
the cotton buds you have available.
Get the person to turn over onto their other side and repeat the
process as with the first candle.
After you have finished, get the person to lie still for a few
minutes before sitting up.
You might find that giving a Facial Massage adds to the experience
as it also helps to soothe and help blood circulation. You can learn
how to give a facial massage HERE
Additional Information
There are several types of Hopi Ear Candle:
Biosun - these are the most well known and widely used ear candle
and are the type mainly used by ear candle practitioners as they
carry a CE Certification which enables them to get insurance.
Get your own Biosun Hopi Ear Candles HERE
Otosan Ear Cones - These are also used by some practitioners but
not nearly as much as Biosun. They actually have more safety
features than Biosun ironically with a built in flame breaking ring
and ear protectors as standard. They too carry a CE Certification.
Get your own Otosan Ear Cones HERE
If you have never experienced ear candles before then you may
like to start off by trying the much cheaper Indian type. They
have a filter at the bottom of the candle and also come in 4
different scents - Unscented, Rose, Orange and Lavender.

Many people like to experience an ear candle treatment whilst
listening to relaxing music. You can see a wide range of "sounds of
nature" relaxing music HERE
Ensure that you undertake the ear candling process in a
draught-free room.
As stated before, ALWAYS check with your doctor before having
an ear candle treatment.
